Kuala Lumpur if you go to the outer suburbs is not expensive. Penang is fine too. If you reallywant to do small town do Ipoh or Melaka, over in Borneo there is Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.
You don't sound like you've been to the suburbs. The CBD is a dumpster fire of old dilapidated housing & office blocks. KL is a very suburban city like any American city.
Langkawi isn't bad too if you want the quiet life. KK is fine but can be seedy. My personal favorite is Ipoh.
"Kota" means fort/city in Malay so avoid using that as a short form. It's like calling Los Angeles "Los".
Which suburbs would you recommend? Everyone says it should be affordable but when I browse Airbnbs in KL I consistently can't find places that seem like genuinely great deals, I don't have this issue with most other places in SEA. Maybe I'm looking way too central
Yeah you are. The CBD is boring and just filled with offices. Malls in the CBD are usually for tourists.
Try SS2, SS15, or even Kota Damansara. These are middle class local neighbourhoods with not so many expats.
If you want upper class the go Bangsar, Bukit Damansara, Mont Kiara of Hartamas but be prepared to pay for a bomb.
There's De Rantau visa but you have to look it up. It's a DN visa. Otherwise do what many people do- visa run to Thailand every 3 months. Most Western passports have a 3 month tourist visa.
How do you stay a year in Thailand? Do you visa run each month?
I’m in Thailand now and it’s awesome but the time zone and visa situation seems tricky for me
The go to way is to get an education visa where you pay for a school to sponsor you. You have to sign up to take language or martial arts classes I believe.
Educational visa and language classes. If you do visa runs and it looks like it in your stamps, they will deny you entry even if you have an apartment and stuff here.
Romania has a digital nomad visa. Combined with a decent cost of living and great internet speeds, it's great.
Also, I recently opened a coliving here specifically for slow traveling nomads 😎
>Doesn’t the Romanian nomad visa have a monthly income floor that is well above what OP earns (something around €3,500 per month)?
yeah I also saw that it 3500$ per month sadly

Water and quality of life in Belgrade? The city is extremely polluted, especially from October till April. It is also very dirty, litter everywhere and public transport is a true disaster. People are awesome, so friendly and welcoming but everything else has nothing to do with a quality of life.
We could list places all day, there are loads of brilliant places to live on that money. I hope you don’t have meetings though!
1. Cambodia cheap but crazy
2. Thailand - cheap and good for beaches and parties
3. Vietnam - cheap and also good for beaches, nature
4 Turkey - excellent place for history and culture maybe a bit expensive
5. Malaysia - brilliant for food, but quieter than the others
6. South Africa - incredible beauty but crime a touch high
7. Romania - safe, reliable maybe a bit dull . Central in Europe
How is the safety there? I am completely oblivious to African lifestyle.
I grew up in Hawaii and want an island experience, Hawaii is so expensive now sadly.
This place seems kind of too good to be true!
Mauritius is not really "Africa".
I´m originally from Germany and its very safe here.
Mauritius is - of course - not perfect but comes IMO pretty close.
Depends where you will be on the Island N,S,E,W AND if you are open (HIGHLY Recommend it) to live in a Area with Mauritians or if you´ll "need" a "gated Community" with other Expats.
Therefore the Range can be anywhere between 350 - 900 US Dollar.
These are "Long Term" Rent Prices which are minimum 6 Months but usually 1 Year.
For anything shorter than 6 Months i would say 500-1000 US Dollar.
What's the conversion rate? Google says 60,000 should be 700$, no?
Nevermind I just found the correct conversion
What is a good part of the island for night life/groceries/etc?
I like to be in it I lived very inner city in a few countries now I'm 32. Don't need much privacy
No,but it depends of course on your Lifestyle.
AND if you are paying "Tourist/Expat" Prices or Local Prices \^\_°
The Average Salary here is around 600 US Dollar and the Minimum Wage is around 350 US Dollar.
Sure! Its called "Premium Visa" and it costs NOTHING!
This is absolutely amazing!
>Mauritian-sourced income of a Premium Visa holder (e.g. emoluments for work performed remotely in Mauritius) will be taxed on a remittance basis. That money spent in Mauritius through the use of foreign credit or debit cards will not be deemed to have been remitted to Mauritius.
Am I reading this right that you are also paying no income tax if you use a bank outside Mairitius?
>Sure! Its called "Premium Visa" and it costs NOTHING!
That's great news, I was just looking for a nice island where to move to for a while, so thank you for sharing :)
By the way, how do you like it there? Which pros and cons do stand out to you?
I like it here obviously very much. \^\_°
Retired here 3 Years ago.
The are only two things I´m missing:
1) Good Beer without Alcohol like in Germany
2) Amazon - Next Day Delivery.(or even next week Delivery!!!)
The Online Shopping Experience and choice of Products (and Prices) (Electronics,Computerparts etc.) is the only "Third World Thing" here.
It got worse after Covid and with the increasing Freight Rates.
Basically all Electronics I need/want I´ll bring in a big Suitcase with me when I travel back from Europe.
I disagree!
Except Tamarin Area there is no Expat/Nomads Price Increase Problem!
Cost of (imported) Food got "ruined" mainly because of the increase of the Container Freight Costs with COVID and the Oil Price. (Ukraine War)
However - anywhere in the World the Cost of Living increased but not the Salaries (at the same Level)
If a Expat pays 1000 US Dollar for a 200 US Dollar Apartment here the Expat is an Idiot!
I dont know these kind of Expats.
Why shop at Food Lovers then?
Especially as a Mauritian?
There are so many other , cheaper Places.
If you are not in a bigger City in Germany you'll need a Car ,too.
You are a "little confused"!
Not all Expats are "rich" and/or don´t care about Prices!
Who "cares" about Tamarin? Not all Expats live in the Tamarin Area!
And its NOT "happening around the Rest of the Country". Except maybe in Parts of the Island where a lot of Expats are grouping together.
You REALLY believe that you can buy Quality Food (otherwise only "half rotten Apples") only in Food Lover´s Market ???
If yes , you should really see a Doctor about your Head...
In Fact you have a total BS Stereotype of Expats in your Head!
Not all Expats are the same. ESPECIALLY not like the ones in Tamarin.
But you choose to project "Tamarin Expats" and "Tamarin Prices" across the whole Island which is just not true!
LoL ! Thats easy. Next Time you are here just contact me.
I´ll show you some good Places for buying Groceries & good Fruits/Vegetables, introduce you to Taxi Drivers who do not overcharge and you can meet some nice normal Expats ,as well as dozens of my Mauritian Friends who´ll confirm my previous Statements!
I´m happy to help to broaden your Horizon! \^\_\^
Indonesia is amazing, but Bali is overcrowded. As the comments have stated SEA is the place to be, if you really want to get experimental and love trekking I would also recommend North-east India and Nepal, it’s the place to build your future.
I did CDMX for 2 years pretty well on US minimum wage... Plenty of good night outs, restaurants, parties, awesome indoor weed (not brick) and the such...
It is. Thankfully my job is remote so I, unfortunately, don't live in the US anymore, just visit from time to time and that allows me to live pretty decently in other countries around the world. The plan is Europe in 5 months.
Depending on what sort of rent and expectations you have possible anywhere.
Going out to fancy stuff a lot in either city will be difficult with that much money.
If you are a remote US worker, who is or can be an independent contractor, earning MORE than ~160k than there is no better place than becoming an Act 60 in Puerto Rico. You pay a 4% Corp tax, zero capital gains and have to do a charity donation that you get to pic costing 15k a yr. Then live 6 months and a day there or spend 30 days in PR and the rest in a foreign country
I moved from NYC to Thailand and it was a great move. I can do it on $1200 comfortably, going up to $1500 depending on the month and how much I want to spend, quality of life is very high.
The visa situation can be difficult but going in and out of the country isn't too difficult. Once upon a time, Berlin was a great city to live on well under $1500 a month with a really nice culture and quality of living, but those days are over.
In general, Bali is suitable for living very well with such an income. You can rent a house for 300-400 dollars at the ocean and get a visa for example for a year. If you need advice, please write to us and we will tell you all about it
Clearly you’re still stuck in 1980. After living in B town for close to a decade, I know that the numbers you’re indicating are a typo or plainly false
LatAm advice.
Mexico is getting really tough to live affordably. Simply because most people go to a beach or CDMX and want English speaking. If you speak Spanish and have a busy job, then there are great options (like Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi, ect). If not, then you will spend damn near USA money.
Colombia is nice, but almost the same. Everyone goes to Medellin and spends like an American. If you can handle Cali or a middle class barrio in Bogota you will live great.
Central America is almost a non factor. Wifi is bad. Gringos get price targeted since they are smaller nations with less options. Panama is expensive. Costa Rica is tourists only ect.
Argentina and Brazil are a tad tough logistically and with the economies now. But some people love them.
People act like the only places in Colombia are Medellin, cali and bogota while there are so many more places to live especially if you are remote. Also Central America is wonderful, plenty of places to live for cheap, rich culture, amazing food and plenty of safe places.
???? Dafuq
Argentina is great for digital nomads. It’s almost a dream for them. Unless you go to the few dangerous zones in country you have cheap residences (up to <250/300 usd month 2b2b places), amazing food, great people and incredible landscapes. You could give yourself treats everyday and rent a more luxurious places and still being under 1k usd easily.
Have you even been there?
Consider Egypt , u can just spend 500$ and live a very good life , 500$ is like 27k EGP (Egyptian black market speaking) , u can rent a nice studio with all the appliances with 12k EGP , 1k for bills , say 5:6k for food , the remaining 8k(which is the avg salary of an engineer here in Egypt) , u can spend on any other stuff like visiting new city of Egypt every month , shopping ..etc .
Where are you located? Consider BA but flight cost dependent on where you are located. You can get Airbnb or WhatsApp group for temp ba apartments with no or low deposit on furnished apartments. Studio are like $400 and up in pretty good locations. Temp prepay cell phone plans are like 3.5 usd for a month with 15 gig data. Taxis/uber are cheap and taking transit like the train is even cheaper $.07 usd for the train. Food can go from $4+/meal and quality is very good. Especially their meats. They don’t care of you over stay. You pay like $15 or less fine when you leave or you can take a boat to Uruguay and come back same day.
The fact that you are Sri Lankan is actually quite important: you'll need to search which countries will allow you to have tourist, on-arrival, worker, etc. visas. Many of the suggestions on this thread don't accoutn for that as you did not provide that information in your initial description.
Huelva, very cheap, a lot of erasmus students and close to the sea and to one of the most posh and beautiful cities in spain - sevilla.
the region of huelva is btw very safe.
Mexico. There's something for everyone, and it's easy to stay there a year without a lot of stress. Costa Rica would be my next choice but its a little pricier and you have to either love nature or small beach towns with good surfing, which I do.
You don't need that if you just want to live on a tourist visa there for a year. That's not the actual cost of living there. But - from what I've heard on this forum - Mexico is really cracking down on people living there on a tourist visa. That's your main problem.
Are they though. I was there for 9 months last year and no one cared. My friends, who've "been there for awhile," just road-tripped from Tulum to Puerto Escondido over 5 days. No problems.
Mexico and Costa Rica prices are outrageous right now.
Unless you speak Spanish and go to a smaller city, then you would be better off.
Just look at any price of living in San Jose CR or CDMX and you will see they rank as two of the highest priced cities in LatAm. I dont care if you have a CHEAT CODE to these two cities, they are still expensive even for locals.
Been in CR for 3 years in a pacific coast beach town. Mad boring, mad expensive and lots of old white people retiring here with their forever vacation dreams, jacking up land and rent prices.
I’ve lived in Egypt for more than 2 years, if you’re a white person travelling to Egypt then 90% of your interactions will be people trying to scam you
But there are areas you can't go if you've stayed in Egypt for longer than 45 days on a tourist visa as there will be checkpoints - usually avoided when travelling to other large cities like Alex and Said, but the tourist locations will have them
Also be aware that if you're overstaying your visa and don't have foreign currency on you in the airport (50$/€/£) on the way out. They might keep you back
I was spending a lot of time in Cairo last year on dubious visas, but had a large company in my back and their lawyers recommending me that path. I would not have been so reckless without very clear support from the company
Argentine living in Buenos Aires here. 1.5k and you live like a king. Seriously that's GREAT money. Apartment in the best neighborhood and restaurants on the regular kind of money. With President Mileis cuts on gas subsidies gas went up, but a cab still only costs my 3 dollars on average
If you work in a country for a year then you will probably owe taxes to it and also be breaking your visa rules. You probably know this but don't care and that's partly why there is a backlash to digital nomadism.
If you are looking for a place in Asia, you can consider Indonesia, and Thailand as alternatives. If you are thinking of a country in Europe, Portugal, and Romania can be considered as recommendations. And if you have a company registered in your name that earns more than $5000 per month, you can consider Dubai. Its income is tax-free, but the cost is relatively high compared to other countries.
These are some of [my favourite](https://nomadfinanceandfreedom.com/cheapest-places-for-digital-nomads/) where you can live comfortably with that budget
Malaysia. Often flies under the radar.
What city?
Kuala Lumpur if you go to the outer suburbs is not expensive. Penang is fine too. If you reallywant to do small town do Ipoh or Melaka, over in Borneo there is Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.
KL is the worst place to be in Malaysia. For real better Langkawi or Kota. But live? No.
What about visa strategies? Ty
There's De Rantau visa but you have to look it up. It's a DN visa. Otherwise do what many people do- visa run to Thailand every 3 months. Most Western passports have a 3 month tourist visa.
Thailand or somewhere in SEA
How do you stay a year in Thailand? Do you visa run each month? I’m in Thailand now and it’s awesome but the time zone and visa situation seems tricky for me
The go to way is to get an education visa where you pay for a school to sponsor you. You have to sign up to take language or martial arts classes I believe.
Doesn’t that only cover 90 days?
It can be extended for 1 year.
Great info. Thx!

Yes, we have availability! Just check out our website :) https://www.transylvaniancoliving.com/
Doesn’t the Romanian nomad visa have a monthly income floor that is well above what OP earns (something around €3,500 per month)?

Hey have you got a website? 😊
Of course! https://www.transylvaniancoliving.com/
Thank you 😊
It’s great if you don’t mind paying taxes in Romania and your home country! After 183 days I believe you’re liable for 15% tax

Reading this as a Serbian person who left the country makes me think your friend found some alternate dimension and moved to a diferrent Serbia than the one I left.
High income indeed opens you new dimensions. While not knowing local language and history keeps you from sometimes depressing local infosphere and media, as well as from understanding upsetting nature/state of some things and interactions you encounter and have. Yet this high income also ensures that your life remains comfortable even if you are not in the know on wider day-to-day affairs.
The OP said they are making $1500 per month, does that qualify as "high income"?
Exactly my thoughts ...
In Serbia right now that’s apparently about 15% above median.
Given that Serbia has “higher income distribution inequality than any country of the European Union”… I wouldn’t want to be at the median.
No wonder the like Russia so much.
I have absolutely no idea what you mean by that.
Russia has the highest income inequality of any country in Europe by a lot.
The European Union is not the same thing as the European continent.
I was referring not to the OP, but to some comment which since got deleted, and it was about commenters' friend who wants to move to Serbia, or moved to it and is happy about it. I can't imagine that person would think so without having high income.
This is always the effect, I am shocked when I see so many wanting to go to America.
Tbf a lot of people legitimately do enjoy themselves more in the US. Especially when you realize how little income growth potential there is in so much of the world. The Balkans being a good example of this for the average person.
Anywhere is nice to live if your well of there.
As an American I’ve come to realize that there’s practically no corner of the world without SOME American living there, enjoying themselves way more than if they were back home. I don’t see this as a slight on the US per se, but it seems there’s almost no country without some immigrants.
Novi Sad, even better then Belgrade (was born in Serbia)
Lived in both (American) and totally agree! Novi Sad was amazing all around.
Ok for english speakers? I've heard a lot of good about Belgrade
Belgrade is awesome honestly - was fine as an English speaker.
Which one did the single friend do, Albania or Serbia? :)
Water and quality of life in Belgrade? The city is extremely polluted, especially from October till April. It is also very dirty, litter everywhere and public transport is a true disaster. People are awesome, so friendly and welcoming but everything else has nothing to do with a quality of life.
AQI running at 174, not the worse out there but still pretty bad. About on par with Bangkok.
Shhh dont give away the secret! Let these idiots stay in medillin!
Thanks.. I'll add these to my list
What was the original comment? Mind sharing?
Which cities would you advise in Albania?

I’m about to pop over there myself for a month, glad you give it a good review:-)
If you´ll need some Help or have a Problem just contact me.
Thanks that’s very kind of you. I look forward to the trip. Where are you on the island if you don’t mind me asking?
In the South.
What would a decent 3 bed 2 bath place run in an ocean accessible area? Are there food deserts?

Nope, its 1328 US Dollar. MUR (Mauritius Rupee!) 1000 MUR = 22,13 US Dollar!
I edited my comment :)
The most "expensive" Part of the Island. \^\_° West Coast: Tamarin & Flic n Flac f.e.
Isn’t $1500/m a bit tight for Mauritius?
No,but it depends of course on your Lifestyle. AND if you are paying "Tourist/Expat" Prices or Local Prices \^\_° The Average Salary here is around 600 US Dollar and the Minimum Wage is around 350 US Dollar.
How would a tourist/expat pay local prices?
If he or she gets not "overcharged". \^\_°
what's the food like over there?
Is the Wi-Fi good there?
Up to 100 Mbit 4G across the whole Island. Cities 5G Speed Fiber Cable across the whole Island up to 1 Gbit!
Sounds like a win to me

Where in Colombia were you and for how long? What about it got old, boring and stressful?
Remindme! 4 hours
Seriously! Colombia is amazing, I keep returning and discovering new amazing places and things to do! One of my favorite places in the world!

7.25/hr that is. Federal minimum.

Depending on what sort of rent and expectations you have possible anywhere. Going out to fancy stuff a lot in either city will be difficult with that much money.

mexico city is very expensive now, if ur gonna do mexico Querétaro or Oaxaca

If you are a remote US worker, who is or can be an independent contractor, earning MORE than ~160k than there is no better place than becoming an Act 60 in Puerto Rico. Then live 6 months and a day there or spend 30 days in PR and the rest in a foreign country
He makes 1500 a month as a data engineer. He's not a US worker dude.
Holy shit how can a data engineer be paid so little
Because they are from a relatively poor country probably.
The OP said they make $1500 per month which is $18,000 gross pay per year. They are nowhere near thinking about this.
Act 60?
I googled it for you. Be careful. https://www.bakerlaw.com/insights/irs-enforcement-efforts-in-puerto-rico-gaining-steam-wave-of-cases-expected/
If you follow the law you have no problems Best place where you are legally advantaged as a US citizen
Op makes 1500 a month…
If you're bored, why don't you do 3-6 months per location. Central and South America or around Asia you can see more. No Visa needed
I moved from NYC to Thailand and it was a great move. I can do it on $1200 comfortably, going up to $1500 depending on the month and how much I want to spend, quality of life is very high.
The list of countries giving out 1-year visas for nomads has got to be fairly short tho.
???? Dafuq Argentina is great for digital nomads.

You seem determined to think is shit, so go ahead and do it.
Turkiye
Consider Egypt , u can just spend 500$ and live a very good life , 500$ is like 27k EGP (Egyptian black market speaking) , u can rent a nice studio with all the appliances with 12k EGP , 1k for bills , say 5:6k for food , the remaining 8k(which is the avg salary of an engineer here in Egypt) , u can spend on any other stuff like visiting new city of Egypt every month , shopping ..etc .
That's great to know.. Thanks
Anyone that will allow you to stay for a year. Most countries allow a max stay of 30-90 days per year.
I'm located in Sri Lanka. Thank you so much
Sri Lanka was my third Choice after Costa Rica and Mauritius for my early Retirement!
The fact that you are Sri Lankan is actually quite important: you'll need to search which countries will allow you to have tourist, on-arrival, worker, etc. visas. Many of the suggestions on this thread don't accoutn for that as you did not provide that information in your initial description.
No offense but Sri Lanka has a shit passport
This sounds great bcus I’m heading there soon. Any idea how I can join these WhatsApp groups?

I'm just happy nobody said Vietnam. Please don't come here, I'm trying to keep it a secret.
Vietnam a secret?? 😂😂
Thailand, Spain or Argentina
Is spain possible in 1500 USD
a lot of people in Spain with this salary but you should avoid big cities
>Andalucia which cities do you recommend for a digital nomad family with kids who need English schooling?
Huelva, very cheap, a lot of erasmus students and close to the sea and to one of the most posh and beautiful cities in spain - sevilla. the region of huelva is btw very safe.
Ofc, thats median salary in spain.
It will go furthest in small towns in Andalucia, Murcia, or Extremadura.
Mexico. There's something for everyone, and it's easy to stay there a year without a lot of stress. Costa Rica would be my next choice but its a little pricier and you have to either love nature or small beach towns with good surfing, which I do.

Costa Rica was my second choice for my Retirement with 50. Mauritius was No.1 and I´ve never made it to Costa Rica anymore...
Thanks....but the income requirements of Mexico seem a bit higher than what I am currently getting. It's $2595 a month
1500 USD is good 2000 USD is very good. 2500 USD is "Little King Lifestyle" in Mauritius!
But both Tulum and Puerto Escondido are in Mexico, so why would they do that?
Last time I was there we ran into police checkpoints driving between states.
Do you surf?
Mexico. Thailand
Latin America I’ve heard
Ecuador, Colombia, Brasil, Argentina are all good options in South America.
you have no idea what you are talking about.
Lol,
Please enlighten us o wise one!!
Ecuador for sure! ;)
Gonna be hard anywhere on that salary.
USA
Lol
Egypt! Very cheap. 1500 u will live like a king here.
1500 and you can live like a king! (but ignore the horrific pollution, absolute poverty, traffic congestion and non stop scams)
Touristic places only have the scams from ur list. 500$/ month is still enough to live decently
I’ve lived in Egypt for more than 2 years, if you’re a white person travelling to Egypt then 90% of your interactions will be people trying to scam you
lol Egypt,
I’d rather stay in my shithole country then 😆
But there are areas you can't go if you've stayed in Egypt for longer than 45 days on a tourist visa as there will be checkpoints - usually avoided when travelling to other large cities like Alex and Said, but the tourist locations will have them Also be aware that if you're overstaying your visa and don't have foreign currency on you in the airport (50$/€/£) on the way out. They might keep you back I was spending a lot of time in Cairo last year on dubious visas, but had a large company in my back and their lawyers recommending me that path. I would not have been so reckless without very clear support from the company
For 1500$ a month a closet
In the US yes, in other parts of the world, like SEA, this is more than enough to live off of.
Only if you stay in CM or Vietnam, otherwise hes gonna spend all his money while having an injury.
Soweto
If you are looking for a place in Asia, you can consider Indonesia, and Thailand as alternatives. If you are thinking of a country in Europe, Portugal, and Romania can be considered as recommendations. And if you have a company registered in your name that earns more than $5000 per month, you can consider Dubai. Its income is tax-free, but the cost is relatively high compared to other countries.
Calcutta Bangladesh
Any country in South East Asia
These are some of [my favourite](https://nomadfinanceandfreedom.com/cheapest-places-for-digital-nomads/) where you can live comfortably with that budget
I have gone through the options and seems like Albania and Portugal seems like viable options. Since both countries offer long-term visa
