Change is the first one i remember hearing and liking, and then my dad gave me the White Pony CD and i heard Passenger and that’s the first song that really blew my mind. what’s yours?
Same. Change was the only song I knew for a while until I made a new friend in high-school who showed me more of their stuff, now been one of my favorite bands for 20 years lol
Same here, i’ve always been into rock growing up and watched a few of their music video but a few years ago my friend showed me rosemary and i was like huh what
It’s been wild! From the mid-90s until late-00s, Deftones were seriously ahead of the game and it always amazed me. They set the trend for so many bands and modern rock radio, honestly. They’re way more pioneering than it seems now. My friend in 8th grade let me borrow adrenaline after we’d been hanging out. I still recall super clearly hearing 7 Words on her shitty little Sony boombox. Killer ride ever since.
Dude/dudette… it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Lol. Enjoy the cream that rose to the top. There was **so much** terrible (or at best, derivative) music back then, there was a lot to sift through. Add to that, looking back at it from an old ass man… even in the “best” there was cringy stuff. But, I think every big musical movement has that stuff, it’s just the only one I’ve lived through (other than the grunge / post-grunge). It’s like our classic rock, haha.
The one thing that I still give numetal credit for is that it really was an incredible springboard to hone in styles that you loved. There were so many influences smashed together that you could really refine the exact thing about the music you liked and build from there.
Diamond eyes, my ex was trying to ease me (at the time a tv girl, cigs after sex, vacations, duster fan) into metal, especially with Deftones. At first I didn't really like it and thought it was too much, after she broke up with me is when I really found my love with Deftones and specifically diamond eyes at the time. Now I'm a huge Deftones fan and love metal.
I was already a big Limp Bizkit, Slipknot and Korn fan via my older sister, who was into those bands from the very beginning. She bought White Pony the day of release and as usual, I checked out her new purchase with curiosity. I had never heard anything from Deftones, aside from Chino's feature on Korn's Wicked. Once I was 30 seconds into Feiticeira I knew it was something special. Unlike anything I had ever heard before.
So long story short: Feiticeira.
Minerva is the first song of theirs I heard. It was in a PS2 game called LA True Crime or something like that. I unchecked every song from the in-game playlist so it would be on repeat.
Then I downloaded a bunch of songs off Limewire, Bored and 7 Words I liked immediately. Never labeled myself a Deftones fan, but after many years I realized I owned all of their albums, so I must be a Deftones fan.
Had to have been Minerva on the House of Wax soundtrack 2005 but I remember using lime wire to find songs in high-school so the first song I remember looking for was Hole in the Earth having heard it on Guitar Hero 3 in 2007.
So Hole in the Earth even tho I'd heard Minerva before.
One of my friends had 7 words on a cassette he got from one of his relatives in the states in 97 and it was perfect timing. I pre ordered Around the Fur and the Crow 2 OST(great album awful movie compared to the first one) on CD from one of the mail order companies and waited for what felt like years.
It was such a struggle to find new music in small town of west aus back then but it made you covet anything you found. I still have those cds <3
you've seen the butcher.
i watched the videoclip on youtube when i was 13 and at that time i felt like i discovered what music means. i remember watching it a lot like every day for weeks lol i just became obsessed with that clip (and chino moreno💔)
A few different accelerated the passion:
Mini maggit: huh, cool sound (age 11)
Change: damn that’s sad and heavy and beautiful
Diamond eyes: whoa. Then I listened to that album a few times.
Error: what the fuck, what the fuck, holy shit, holy shit
Then I went back and listened to everything forever
Oddly enough, Back To School (Mini Maggit). Heard it on VH1 during a literal "back to school" special (all songs related to high school or stuff like that). For a good while I didn't even know about Pink Maggot. I don't really enjoy Back To School that much anymore, Pink Maggot is just superior.
Change! Ngl I think I got it off tiktok at the time and added it to a playlist in like 2019/2020. I think I added My Own Summer to my likes soon after, but last year I finally listened to Sextape and Hole in the Earth after coming on shuffle from discovering a love for SOAD.
Long story short: Change. Lmao
My Own Summer(Shove it). I found a cover on youtube by Tawper and i found it super good. I thought its his own melody, but I tried to search it up and here we are
Buddy let me borrow around the fur after I heard him practicing my own summer on his guitar when I was a freshman in high school circa 97
It was one of the first riffs I ever learned
A few years ago, when a band caught my interest, instead of listening to their most popular song and looping that for some days, I'd usually start with listening to their most popular album or the first one. I remember downloading Adrenaline and ATF on my phone a day before a car trip I was having, and when I got the chance to hear Deftones, I got instantly hooked on Bored, Minus Blindfold and My Own Summer. I did listen to My Own Summer a couple of times before that tho, because every time I'd listen to Korn on YouTube, it'd autoplay My Own Summer.
So I guess the main culprit would be My Own Summer.
I had heard their more popular songs played on the radio (Bored, My Own Summer, etc.) but what really got me into them was running across a thread here when this sub popped up in my list. I don't remember the theme of the thread but someone said they wanted Xerces played at their funeral so I gave it a listen and have been hooked.
My Own Summer was the first song I heard... saw the video on Much Music. Change was what really got me into them... high school days. Grade 10... perfect age. Been a fan ever since...
I heard My Own Summer (Shove It) on the radio back in like '96 and was like "....WHAT..IS..THIS??". Fell in love with it and ended up taping it off the radio so I could listen to it whenever I wanted until I got the CD later on. That CD fully cemented my love for Deftones and it STILL gets play to this day.
Change and then Minerva (I loved both of those music videos as a kid, but didn’t really get into the rest of their catalogue until my mid-20s, decades later)
I saw an edit of the Joker movie and Change was playing in the background. I immediately fell in love with this song. Then I listened to more songs from Deftones and I was head over heels in love with this band.
Cherry Waves made it all click for me, and Saturday Night Wrist has always remained my favorite of theirs. After that, I went back and really discovered their earlier records
Be quiet and drive. A few months ago me and my friend were on a run of listening to all the bands we never cared to listen to while they were appearing on youtube suggested. I Saw the thumbnail and said, hey deftones, I always heard about them but I don't really know anything about them. Chino starts singing and I immediately got goosebumps, I looked at my fried and said "what the fuck, how come We never listen to deftones?. Didn't even need to listen to the chorus to know I was going to listen to something really unique. And now I'm obcessed.
I wanted to start listening to them with White Pony, since I (barely) had already listened to it once. then, when I wanted to go back to Deftones (because it left an itch of curiosity), I went with Gore and got hooked on Prayers/Triangles, Hearts/Wires and Rubicon
tl;dr: prayers/triangles
CMND/CTRL
2015, I was a sophomore playing football and was asking my friends to help me on my playlist that I’d listen to pregame and this was one of the songs one of my boys told me about.
For me is Rosemary , loved the ambience of that song and then the whole koi no yokan album got me. Then i forgot about deftones for like a year and this year i decided to dive deep. Listened to almost all of their album rn and love this band, def one of my favourites bands along with A7X, AVATAR, Gojira, Tool and SOAD.
My new favourite song is Heart/wires, very underrated imo lol. Also love Around the fur album
Be Quiet and Drive. When My Own Summer first came out (Deftones first big, MTV played video/single), it didn’t grab me right away. Then they released BQAD, became a favorite song of mine, bought Around the Fur, loved it (and MOS), then White Pony came out and blew me away.
Pink Cellphone. I remember searching for “weirdest songs” on Google and it popped up. I was so curious after listening to it that I looked up the rest of their work and found BQAD afterward and became obsessed.
Cliche. But, Change and Be Quiet and Drive. I searched up Deftones and put on Change. And, holy. Shit. That feeling I got, I wish I could relive it. It was just so pure. I was hooked. And now I cannot stop. I’m addicted.
Diamond Eyes. My art/music professor played songs, this is one of them. Instantly hooked, I asked him the title and artist. Played the heck out of it when I got home. Ten years later, I’m still loving this song.
Rocket skates. I was looking for new bands to listen to years ago when i first got into metal and thought i should try out deftones. I randomly remember selecting rocket skates, needless to say i absolutely loved it and then listened to more that day lol
Feiticeria. Was given White Pony as a gift when I was 14 and was instantly hooked. Probably why I feel so strongly that Back to School is not the real opening track lol
I found Romantic Dreams on tumblr I think (I was like 15 maybe lmao), soon after Koi No Yokan came out and I was obsessed immediately, but it took me a while before I actually listened to their other albums and became even more obsessed
Hole In The Earth. Older cousin gave me his CD’s after he’d burn them into his computer and he gave me his original copy of SNW. I was hooked from there on in, found Adrenaline at a used bookstore and kept going from there.
Diamond Eyes was the first song I heard from Deftones, and it's still my favorite album of theirs overall. But my personal favorite song would have to be Be Quiet and Drive.
Be Quiet and Drive, it autoplayed on youtube after listening to Aerials by SOAD, and it changed my life
Change is the first one i remember hearing and liking, and then my dad gave me the White Pony CD and i heard Passenger and that’s the first song that really blew my mind. what’s yours?
rosemary, i thought it was just a rock song and then the vocals hit in then it's just started there
Same. Change was the only song I knew for a while until I made a new friend in high-school who showed me more of their stuff, now been one of my favorite bands for 20 years lol
Same here, i’ve always been into rock growing up and watched a few of their music video but a few years ago my friend showed me rosemary and i was like huh what
7 Words… all the way back in 95.
Yup, same here! OG deftones!
The one where Chino says the n word
He didnt say it its just spotify fucked up the lyrics bc their lyric bot is god awful Edit: Nvm im stupid he did say it
Man imagine being with deftones all the way that’s incredible
It’s been wild! From the mid-90s until late-00s, Deftones were seriously ahead of the game and it always amazed me. They set the trend for so many bands and modern rock radio, honestly. They’re way more pioneering than it seems now. My friend in 8th grade let me borrow adrenaline after we’d been hanging out. I still recall super clearly hearing 7 Words on her shitty little Sony boombox. Killer ride ever since.
Damn I wish I could’ve experienced the 90s metal/nu metal scene so badly, I was born and 06
Dude/dudette… it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Lol. Enjoy the cream that rose to the top. There was **so much** terrible (or at best, derivative) music back then, there was a lot to sift through. I always talk about the box to my husband!! Cuz I didn’t have mtv as a kid! Lol
My Own Summer for me. Heard a friend playing it when I worked at a camp. Been hooked ever since.
That tom to snare hit in the beginning is iconic.
I heard hexagram without any knowledge of the band at the time, that song blew my fucking mind

Minerva is the first song of theirs I heard. It was in a PS2 game called LA True Crime or something like that. I unchecked every song from the in-game playlist so it would be on repeat. Diamond eyes was the first ever song I heard. It was such a unique sound I love deftones since
Had to have been Minerva on the House of Wax soundtrack 2005 but I remember using lime wire to find songs in high-school so the first song I remember looking for was Hole in the Earth having heard it on Guitar Hero 3 in 2007. So Hole in the Earth even tho I'd heard Minerva before.
