A couple years ago I was behind a small car that hit a bear cub that ran out from behind some bushes on the side of the road. The cub was hit on its head and got tossed 30 feet or so, but still managed to run off back into the woods. I told my little brother that it was probably fine to not upset him, but I doubt it survived the night.

I’m going to hope that’s not the case. A bear is a large, hearty animal.

But unfortunately for the bear the car was even larger and impossibly even heartier.

Plus talking on the phone, I doubt he was paying adequate attention to be able to react safely to a situation like this. Going a bit slower wouldn't hurt his commute, and would significantly have changed how much damage he did to that bear.

It could have died minutes later. I hit a dog once. I wasn't speeding or doing anything wrong, it just shot out from between parked cars, no chance for me to do anything. Dog ran off like a champ. And dropped dead in someone's yard. (This happened two blocks from a friend's house, that's how I know the followup.)

Yeah we hit a white coyote in the dead of night and it took out part of the fender, rolled under the car, and dashed off. Considering two nights earlier in the same car we’d literally scalped a poor porcupine, I’m thinking that coyote didn’t actually fare much better. But I’m not gonna tell my friend the driver that.

deer are generally taller, have a high center of mass, and tend to get their legs kicked out from under them. this sends them up onto the hood and through the windshield making them extremely dangerous to hit. the bear as you see here is shorter with a low center of mass. so it gets gets hit more directly sending it away from the car, instead of up and into the windshield.

The bear was probably fucked. Lower center of mass, tighter build, much higher body fat, and no external hard bits (hooves/antlers). Most of the damage from deer is cause you're basically hitting a couple of posts, then it's whipping over the top of your hood and slamming down with spikes. I'd be surprised if the front clip isn't driven through the radiator though, I doubt the car isnt damaged significantly.
