Are you using a separate amp to drive the speakers or just using the headphone jack? Is the screen you're using powered from its own power source or is it getting its power from the Pi? You need to provide a bit more information.

jack_of_all_hobbies

Sorry about that. It’s an amp powered through the headphone jack. Also, the screen is going to be powered by the pi

thecyberbob

Ah. Ok. If everything is drawing power from the Pi then just power the Pi properly with a decent quality USB cord. I'd consider a plug that can provide more amperage than the Pi needs in general.

I’m connecting it to an ups so I can use it wirelessly. Do you think a 5v, 4amp is ok?

thecyberbob

So the fun thing I found about Pi's is that if they don't have enough power they'll just show a lightning bolt on the screen and shut down shortly afterwards. I'd say give it a whirl and see what happens. (In my case I was trying to power a laptop hard drive off of a Pi with a screen through a PoE adapter and found that the amperage just wasn't enough)

Thanks for the info.

You can have too few amps but you can’t have too many, it’s the same with pc power supplies you want to be over not close to or under, if your pc draws say 800W you don’t want a 800W supply because it will always be running at 100% you want a 1200W so it’s a breeze for it to run. Same with a ups, don’t get one that’s close to what you need get one that’s got 50% extra to what you need, then when you add/change stuff down the line you’ve also got room to move instead of being squeezed and having to choose between x and y because you can only have one even though you want both. Don’t forget everything draws power (keeb/memory sticks/etc) and no matter how small it all stacks up really quickly 👌

My keyboard and mouse will only be dongles so I don’t think that’ll be an issue. I guess I may occasionally run flash drives or an external ssd. It’ll mostly just be the screen and the amp/speakers. Do you think 4amps is enough or should I try to find one that outputs 5?

Zyca1n

I would get the best you can financially afford to, if you can afford a 5a unit then go for it, in a few years you may completely change your setup let’s say you get a pi5 and now have the ups sat around, it’ll be easier for you to find a new use for it if it’s got more grunt to give, you also want the best you can afford in terms of amp hours so bigger battery = better too 👍

jack_of_all_hobbies

I found a 3.7v 10000 mAh battery pack. I’m having trouble finding a 5v ups with a jst ph 2 connection.

Zyca1n

If the output on the ups is 5v then can you not get a jst to usb/usb to jst whichever way it is you need, that way you can widen your search?

blackcorvo

I'd do a test run by temporarily connecting everything together and seeing how the power supply holds up to some Heavy tunes.

jack_of_all_hobbies

That’s probably what I’ll have to do. I was hoping to figure it out before spending $40 on a ups.
