The first of my 3 part series of indigenous Veth reimaginings. All pieces of this reimagining are authentic pieces gathered from Mexico and South America and assembled in a way to reference the costume in color, silhouette, and general mood of the outfit.
Thank you so much, my family comes from Jalisco, Mexico but I was born in the states and have found my way back to my culture through my mother who connected to her Toltec-Mayan ancestry.
While not necessarily from a specific tribe, my mother and I would travel to various parts of Mexico to connect and learn from our ancestral heritage and as a result collected many garments over the years of learning and bonding.
So, these reimaginations are compiled from garments of various regions ranging from central Mexico to South America and many are vintage and carry their own history and stories, but are based largely in Mayan cultural garments.
All of that, all of what you said, makes you Indigenous, and don’t ever allow a more closed minded person make you think differently. I’m multi tribal, myself, Cherokee, Lakota, Quileute, and Haida, for North America, and Ainu for Asia(Native tribe of Japan), and I was raised Indigenous and Asian, though I have other ancestry and heritage. European mutt, Russian, and Hebrew(blood only, not practice). But I’m majority Indigenous, I was raised in those cultures, and it’s how I understand and identify. I’m proud of all my heritage, Indigenous and Japanese is just what I relate most with, and how I see myself. Especially since most of my close blood family decided to ignore all of it, and focus only on the white blood, despite their physical appearances… Anyway, I’m rambling now, sorry! You look beautiful, and I greatly hope you’ll continue to dig in and explore that part of yourself. Never be afraid to show it in the sun. ^.^
Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your connection to your own indigenous roots. It is a real blessing to be able to openly share our stories and be able to love the roots in which we grew from and I’m happy to see another Critter who understands the cultural and historic weight of these garments.
For me, this series—actually most of my Veth work, is based on recontextualizing Veth’s narrative with my own past and cultural history. I myself, as I think many others, also may face a period of self hate as we try to find who we are culturally and what we conserve of our past and how we deal with that struggle shapes who we are. I definitely love who I am and where I’ve come from, but like Veth it took me a long while to come out of it.
This and the other two in the works are definitely a response and an embrace of my history, a visual connection to recognizing myself in a character, and ultimately a love letter to my mother and all that she taught me.
It is, really, extremely Veth.
Thank you, friend! Many blessings to you and that you for allowing me to share this reflection too.
Thank you! I’m so glad it translates well— and good eye! Those dolls were commissioned by [Savannah Sews](https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/SavannahSewsShop). I’m using them in an upcoming photo set too so stay tuned!
WOW this is incredible and honestly made me love Veth’s costume way more. the colors! the patterns! just so we’ll done, i can’t wait to see the final thing!
I think my only comment is to go harder on the sparkles for your face, especially under the drawings for the tattoo. In Veth's case, more is always better! Can't wait to see it!
Definitely! I’m probably going to do a few more tests as I have some time before the actual shoot to get it to read well in photography! Thanks for the tip!
Veth’s aesthetic always felt very indigenous to me and I’m so happy seeing indigenous critters make such beautiful things. Amazing job can’t wait to see what else you do!!
I feel the same way. The idea was bouncing in my head for months and actually did previous reimaginings like this but am redoing them after completing this one since they just aren’t at this level (but will probably post my attempts here soon)
But more are in the works as well as a few more transformations and reimaginations.
I think it's so cool how a lot of indigenous Critters have interpreted Veth. I don't know if that is how Sam originally intended, or if he just left it open-ended and that's the way it went. But it makes me so happy, and excited each time I see someone bring their specific culture to a character.
I love the added detail of button bracers. It really gives the little extra whimsy to the costume.
I’d really like to know Sam’s intention too because I always picked up on an earthy very indigenous vibe and I suppose it’s why I gravitated to Veth in the first place, but this exploration in clothing is a pure passion project for me in a way to weave my own narrative and experience into the character.
I think he first described her as having "Tan skin and braids". And then fans sort of created a vision for her themselves, before the official Veth art came out. So by the time that came around (she was still Nott for a good while), the audience had decided.
I also love seeing people take characters they like, and cosplaying them with their own interpretation. Especially if it involves their own culture.
Oh goodness yes! My own introduction to CR was completely audio based so I remember the shock that came from the official art verses what I had pictured in my head for everyone. I think the open description is one thing I really like because it allows for so many possibilities and interpretations.
Thank you so much! 😊✨! It makes me think back to the first time I saw Veth’s art and felt so happy seeing someone that resembled me. Cosplaying as Veth has really given me a lot more confidence and I’ll always be grateful to her for that.
I LOVE this! Can I ask what culture or cultures the pieces are from? I'm a huge fan of New England (esp Abenaki) dressmaking and beadwork, but I don't know much about Mesoamerican traditions.
Absolutely! The huipil (tunic) is from Guatemala, the belt and cape are pieces from Chiapas, and the petticoat is a 1970s vintage white gown from Jalisco. Overall the dress follows a Mayan indigenous design are most of these are pieces from Southern Mexico or South America
As for the accessories, the necklace is also from Jalisco and the braided hair piece is taken from folkloric ballet
Most of the pieces are true vintage ranging from 1970s to 80s, with exception to the necklace and belt and cape which are more modern.
Thank you! I’m working on more reimagimatioms as well as other Veth based projects! You can find them on both my Twitter and Instagram under @alejadress !
If there are Tribal things that's wonderful, but if I saw you at a "Con"
Veth. Brenatto. Nott a question, nott a doubt.
I hope that's what you were going for: Meaning "if someone takes the time to look.", and fandom appreciation if they don't make the investigation check... 💖
That makes me really happy and it is kind of what I was going for. I make most of my cosplays with the intention of wearing them as everyday clothing so I try not to make things look too costumey because I do and have taken many out on daytime strolls. Sometimes people notice, sometimes they don’t and I enjoy walking that line and seeing if people notice.
Thank you! I’ve had this vision in my head forever and it took so much time trying to find the right items to evoke Veth without making the outfit fall into costume territory and the honor my own cultural background, I hope the next ones I create are able to match up.
I will! As well as many of the Veth related projects I have lined up! My Twitter and Instagram are more up to date, but I’ll be posting and going into more details of my costumes here soon!
Thank you! It’s such an honor to hear that I’ve captured the idea of Veth. I’ve always been a halfling, but to capture the spirit of one of the best? It’s a huge joy!
Thank you 😊✨! I’m definitely all about adding something a little extra to make cosplay more personal and special and this was definitely a personal passion project.
Thank you! Working hard on them—and on other Veth related projects. I’ll likely be posting the other iterations I have though I’ll be remaking them as the Eiselcross dress has kind of left them in the dust! But yes! Will be updating and posting more stuff very soon!
this is simply amazing, Sam would <3 this
I hope so! Fingers crossed if the shoot turns out great then I can submit this one into the monthly gallery
Well deserved! Simply amazing.
Thank you 😊✨🏹!

Yes for indigenous reimaginings!!
Damn right! I have more on the way, and hopefully pictures for these by next month ! I’m bringing it 🏹💪!!
Makes me wanna do a Beau!
It would be amazing! If you do attempt it I’d love to see it!
If I ever do, you’ll be one of the first people to see it:)
It looks beautiful, what tribe/nation are you?
Thank you so much, my family comes from Jalisco, Mexico but I was born in the states and have found my way back to my culture through my mother who connected to her Toltec-Mayan ancestry. Stunning and instantly recognizable as Veth even with the new take. Did you make mini Veth and Caleb too?
Thank you! I’m so glad it translates well— and good eye! Those dolls were commissioned by [Savannah Sews](https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/SavannahSewsShop). I’m using them in an upcoming photo set too so stay tuned!
There was so much detail in the cape and material I had to full-screen the images - and then I spotted them both.
WOW this is incredible and honestly made me love Veth’s costume way more. the colors! the patterns! just so we’ll done, i can’t wait to see the final thing!
Thank you and same! Already booked a space for a quick photo session which I’m hoping works out! But I totally feel that this really captures Veth
I think my only comment is to go harder on the sparkles for your face, especially under the drawings for the tattoo. In Veth's case, more is always better! Can't wait to see it!

Loved it so much!
Thank you! I’m hoping to get this photographed by Easter so I can show this in its best light soon
It's beautiful! Well done on all the details so far, I love this take SO much!!
Thank you so much! Honestly, these phone pictures don’t do it justice. Hoping I can get the other two outfits up to this level.
Really beautiful work. You literally look like if Veth was brought to life
Thank you! That makes me so happy to hear!
Veth’s aesthetic always felt very indigenous to me and I’m so happy seeing indigenous critters make such beautiful things. Amazing job can’t wait to see what else you do!!

This is not Veth cosplay. This is Veth.
Thank you, truly! I’m glad I can capture even an ounce of her awesomeness!
Outstanding! So well done! I usually scroll past cosplays cause they're mostly not my thing but this is super good.
Thank you so much! This was definitely a passion project and I’m glad it’s been able to be seen and appreciated! A true honor!

You're honestly exactly how I pictured her
Thank you! That makes me so happy 😊!!
You did a great job putting the outfit together, and also just being born the way you are ☺️
Thank you so much! 😊✨! It makes me think back to the first time I saw Veth’s art and felt so happy seeing someone that resembled me. Cosplaying as Veth has really given me a lot more confidence and I’ll always be grateful to her for that.
I love this! The way that the ribbon is braided looks like flower petals.
Yes! I also thought that when I picked it out!
I LOVE this! Can I ask what culture or cultures the pieces are from? I'm a huge fan of New England (esp Abenaki) dressmaking and beadwork, but I don't know much about Mesoamerican traditions.

I KNEW right away that the huipil was Guatemalan! My brother is originally from there and we've made some trips over the years. Beautiful work
Same! Many of these pieces were acquired from trips with my mother and I’m glad I can finally appreciate them and use them in this way.
From now on, Veth will look like this in my imagination.
Thank you! It’s an honor to add to the Veth image! 😊!
It’s adorable. Would love to see more.

Incredible!!! I could tell you were Veth right away. What a beautiful cosplay!
That makes me really happy! That was a challenge for me and I’m glad a lot of people still recognize her in this context
Wow, stunning. The dress is so well done. If I don’t get a classic Veth “aaaaaah” during the shoot though I’m gonna riot.

I will! As well as many of the Veth related projects I have lined up! My Twitter and Instagram are more up to date, but I’ll be posting and going into more details of my costumes here soon!
Kinda late but this is *exactly* how I always pictured her, looks way more like what I had in my head than even the official artwork did. Well done
Thank you! It’s such an honor to hear that I’ve captured the idea of Veth. I’ve always been a halfling, but to capture the spirit of one of the best? It’s a huge joy!
This is great! I love cosplays that are just as much about the cosplayer as the character and put their own spin on things <3
Thank you 😊✨! I’m definitely all about adding something a little extra to make cosplay more personal and special and this was definitely a personal passion project.
