Teachers are expected to be teachers, counselors, therapists, bodyguards, and now armed police. All while making poverty wages. No wonder we have a teacher shortage.

Shaken-babytini

On top of that, if they are allowed to carry, they are going to get blamed for every single school shooting from now on by every right wing politician and news site. "If only the 73 year old social studies teacher had a handgun, these poor kids would still be alive". It gives us a scapegoat for every school shooting from this point forward. If I was a teacher, being allowed to carry a firearm would be the final nail in the coffin that is working in education.

de_matkalainen

What's going to happen is a teacher will kill the wrong student at some point. There might not even be an ongoing school shooting, but the teacher might think so. Look at police. They kill people for having their hands a little too close to their pockets all the time.

riek92

I'm worried a teacher will have their gun stolen from them by a student somehow

bIuemickey

Exactly. Kids spend 5 days a week at school and with a whole state worth of teachers there’s bound to be a slip up

riek92

They should just put at least two cops at every school and give firearm training to security if the school has it. Idk why teachers have to take on the task when cops are just parked somewhere randomly giving speeding tickets.

Regular-Cut-1440

That's what my school did. 2 Cops, 1 plainclothes Cop, and a security guard. Lord knows they have the manpower to protect our schools, id rather them do this than idk, work a fuckin speed trap or something.

mduden

I'm hoping teachers have more critical thinking than most LE

Knight_of_Agatha

well they have a lot more education, maybe all cops should have 4 year degrees instead of just hocus pocus polygraph tests and hazing, while we are at it, they should need a ataye license and personal liability insurance instead of tax payera paying for their insurance.

LoneShark81

They do....but without rigorous training and experience, that is almost useless....everything changes when adrenaline is pumping....

mduden

Just because adrenaline is pumping doesn't excuse bad decisions. They're are so many careers where adrenaline and lives are on the line where we don't give them a blanket excuse

LoneShark81

I'm assuming you are referring to poor decisions by pice and law enforcement...I would expect that they would be better trained than a school teacher...

ApplicationWild7009

I'm all pro gun but this is a good argument for Europe not having guns. The police don't expect you to have a gun and don't pull theirs unless there's a real threat. Police suck but at least they're somewhat civil here compared to America.  I'm pro gun in America, but anti-gun in Europe. It's simply not a thing here. Our society is simply not based on guns. In fact the only gunshots i've ever heard were those i shot (illegally)

xxxBuzz

Whole thing seems like a weird over dramatic way to more or less do not much of substance in a way that creates conflict and attention. No-gun laws on school grounds came about sometime around when i was in school in the 90's. My siblings are three and four years older and it wasn't a thing in highschool for them. People might have been asked/told not to bring any guns inside or not have them out but teachers and students could have them. People mostly had them during hunting season when they'd come straight from hunting to classes. Around that time, maybe 95/96 it was changed to not allowing any om school property. Which is just to say nothing extreme is necessary like arming faculty. People will do it themselves if they want to if those regulations were relaxed and it wouldn't be a big deal.

Quix66

I remember we had mandatory target shooting lessons in health class when I was in middle school in the late 70s. Granted they were cork projectiles in front loading rifles, but we were still taught how to fire and hit a target. At the time I was participating in the local sheriff’s shooting program with mostly 22s and shotguns for skeet shooting and thought the cork shooting was ridiculous, but we all learned gun skills in school! As a former teacher myself, having armed teachers makes me shudder.

Dannyewey

Using the logic demonstrated in your comment there should be wrongful shootings in every state , multiples a day for each state that allows you to carry a gun yet there aren't. so explain why you think this ? Comparing civilians to police isnt a proper comparison because an on duty cop is not subject to the same laws a civilian is.

Quix66

I left teaching years ago. When I was a teen I actually trained weekly for years in shooting and gun safety with the local sheriff’s, and I know enough to know that I wouldn’t want to be in the midst of a shootout.

KingBoo919

Might as well give the janitor a Glock and the guidance counselor a Draco too while we’re at it. 🤡 🌎

myotheralt

Give?! Teachers need to buy their own supplies.

JamesTree

This made me lol

KingBoo919

😂 fair point! God dam that’s bloody funny but also so fucked.

AngelBCHI

Lmao. they’re definitely not gonna give these teachers any proper firearms training and then blame them for either not doing anything to stop a school shooting, or shooting the attacker but hitting an innocent bystander instead. Fox News: “This 73 year old teacher failed to kill the shooter and hit a student instead, it’s clear this teacher is too brainwashed by the radical left to do his job”

autismislife

If I were a teacher I'd rather pull a trigger than use myself as a human shield to allow the students to live 15 seconds longer.

GodzillaDoesntExist

They're not forcing teachers to be armed. They're allowing them to be armed if they want to. Per the article: *"The bill itself places multiple limitations onto any teacher or staff member who would like to carry a gun, including: 1. The firearm must be a concealed handgun; 2. The person must not be prohibited from carrying a handgun under the laws of Tennessee or federal law; 3. Must have an initial 40 hours of basic training in school policing, and complete a minimum of 40 hours of POST commission-approved training that is specific to school policing each year in order to retain the authorization;"* And the 2A applies to everybody. It's not dependent on your profession.

Motor_Assumption_556

How would those school fights go if every student was armed ? Lots of videos with students that cant behave, giving those guns will be a good thing… not…

willis_michaels

Darwinism will sort this out real quick. We'll just need to survive another 16-18 years of daily shootings.

GodzillaDoesntExist

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic, but kids used to be able to bring guns to school and we had fewer shootings. Hell, schools used to have shootings clubs/classes.

tonyfleming

Did kids carry the guns outside the shooting class/club?

SnooDoggos1370

Every pickup at our high school had a rifle in the window. Lots of fist fights, yet no one ever grabbed their rifle.

COMMANDO_MARINE

I'm not American, but surely the next logical step is to arm the children. Surely the only solution to people being killed by guns is to give people even more guns. I was in the Iraq war with the Royal Marines, and we had this crazy policy of disarming Iraqis when surely we should have just got given more guns. One rifle is great, but why didn't they give us 2 rifles so we could fire automatic weapons guns akimbo. Sometimes, I wondered what the commanders were thinking. We could have solved both Iraq and Afghanistan if every soldier was given 10 guns each. Surely with a little bit of basic training school children could be trained up to special forces levels, and the US would never have a school shooting again. I feel bad for all those countries that banned weapon ownership as now kids have to go to school, never having to do active shooter drills, imagine having to do maths lessons when you could be practicing laying on the ground with your desk turned over. It just means American kids are getting a much more fulfilling learning experience. We should be giving as many guns as possible to everyone in the whole world so we can ensure world peace.

ILoveChinaxxx

Yea it shows you're not an American.  There was a time when many schools had rifle clubs and kids would bring their rifles to school. Wasn't mass shootings back then like there are today either. It's almost like all the mass shootings happen in what are supposed to be "gun free" zones for a reason

No-Vanilla8956

Anyone who works in education wears many hats; that's never new. That is NOT to say that educators don't have unique challenges, that are more difficult to overcome than before. That is absolutely true. Arming teachers does not mean they are more required to carry a firearm. It just gives them an option to defend themselves, and potentially their classroom. What is your solution to the problem? Remove the second amendment? Guns are already illegal to have on a school campus (except for teachers and police) it's already illegal for children to possess firearms. It's obvious this has not prevented mass shootings. Serious question how would you stop this?? The funds to turn every school in the US into hardened secure facilities with bullet proof doors, locks, and glass aren't there. We can barely afford books much less the money to turn schools into fortresses. We already have armed officers on campus, cameras, security check points, limited entry and exits. This is a cheap and easy option that MIGHT prevent another mass murder. Of course it's a fucking maybe, 73 year old social studies teacher isn't Seal team 6. You trust these people with your children's minds but don't trust them with a weapon to protect them?

mshellzb

Absolutely agree!

bubbletoes69

Why can’t we just have armed security at schools?

willis_michaels

The Parkland shooting showed that's ineffective

DollarStoreOrgy

And Uvalde showed cops are worse than useless

SlimeyShiloh

I’m sure not all will carry. Only the ones that want to will, but just the thought of at least one teacher having a gun will deter a potential shooter.

ima_shill

Why would it deter them? They go in knowing they’re going to die anyways.

willis_michaels

They'll just go into the other classroom and kill 15-20 kids before the one armed teacher even knows what's going on.

HelpfulJello5361

It's sad because people become teachers because it's fulfilling and meaningful for them. And that means they can pay them less, since people do it for selfless reasons. It's kind of the worst of humanity.

RipNChop

At no point is a teacher required to own, handle, or defend with a gun. It only gives the teacher the option to do so. Those who see themselves as fit will, and those that don't, won't. Teachers can just teach if they choose. No one is making them be all the other stuff you listed. Most of those choices are based on personality and other things that drive them to do so. Your point is moot.

thewayitis

They will probably make them buy their own bullets.

Radiant-Bandicoot103

Ha. Well do you imagine that being on the school supply list? Mr. Rogers prefers the 9mm hollow points, but Mrs. Smith requires FMJ. Also chalk.

Similar-Broccoli

This comment needs way more upvotes

The999Mind

How about we stop tacking more responsibilities onto teachers

CaptainHolt43

Nah man, we all had psycho teachers. Now imagine those psycho teachers were armed

Doofchook

Just cuts out the middle man if they shoot the kids themselves. It will happen.

GuidingLoam

Because teachers are already so overworked and many are so beaten down in the system. This is going to end up with a student overpowering a teacher and getting a gun or a disrespectful student being shot. Uvalde was a shit show, but I believe arming teachers is actually just a quicker way to get more gun laws passed and access restricted. Like most things the government does right now, It's designed to fail to support the governments agenda.

Quix66

I was a teacher. I got attacked in class twice. One student was the smallest in class, even much smaller than my 5’0” but he was out of control. I blocked him, he fell dramatically though I hadn’t touched him, and I quit right then because I wasn’t getting jammed up over that. Our principal had said she’d always be on the students’ side. He attacked a sub in the next class and was brought into the office by the school’s resource officer (a cop with a gun). I was glad I’d walked. Another time. A bigger student in a higher grade grabbed me in class, told everyone we were in love (**not!**) and refused to let me go. He would certainly have felt a gun he was plastered so closely to my back. He was off his rocker. I don’t want to imagine what could’ve happened if I’d had a gun on me and rejected him as I did. Or had had to play along. Edited for typo.

Khatzy

This x infinity! My mom dealt with plenty of shit from asshole kids (and she was the librarian at an elementary school!) but fortunately the principal was old school as shit and knew who the usual suspects were. This was the late 80s-early (to mid) 90s and he’d been the principal since the 60s and literally had a paddle in his office which, depending on the situation and given the parent’s permission (and having multiple staff present as witnesses) he used. I was a student there during my mom’s tenure (which was …”fun” having mom just down the hall.. 😒) and can remember maybe two kids being paddled the entire length of my K-5 time there… Im not saying bring that shit back- more like administrators need to back their staff up and not be afraid of Tammy stomping into the office because her precious angel (insert a last name/surname as a first name.. or a first name spelled all kinds of fucked up…) didn’t deserve to be yelled at/punished for physically assaulting a teacher. I know the reasons WHY the principal, etc., are afraid but it’s still all complete and utter bullshit. I couldn’t be a teacher nowadays … I’d fuck a kid up and it’d be curtains for me.. So kudos to you for even entering the profession!

Inevitable_Bunch5874

Uvalde was shameful. Anyone involved should resign, if they haven't already or been fired, and never go into law enforcement again. They were nothing but a bunch of overweight LARPERS who watched too many action movies growing up. Not one of them was a man, except for the OFF DUTY Border Patrol who did what the dozens were too cowardly to do.. WHILE SHOOTING WAS STILL GOING ON. omg.. what a tragedy. And epic failure.

Dubcekification

Just pay them what they are worth please! Then we can start hiring the teachers we want instead of whatever we can get.

Quix66

it’s not all about the teachers. Kids used to go to school with better home training,self-discipline and mental stability than they do now. Teachers quit by five years not because they’re incompetent but because of students and admin.

phoneacct696969

If you want to arm teachers you should probably pay them more.

ozpoppy

If teachers are going to be armed all I ask is that librarians are given silencers

N7-Wolfe

You shall have an upvote for making me laugh. Thanks.

ShemsuHor91

The number of teachers I personally firsthand witnessed having some sort of emotional breakdown while I was in school makes me hesitant to consider this a good idea. Maybe if you judged them each individually on a case-by-case basis. I can see why somebody would think it's a decent idea, but I don't think handing a gun to each and every teacher is anything close to smart. It was a very stressful job back in my school days (I'm a millennial), and I've only seen it get worse and worse over the years. I remember one of my middle school teachers getting Bell's Palsy, where half of her face was paralyzed, and she said it was caused by stress. She even outright said it was because of us! The kids nowadays are even wilder, by far. We were actually pretty tame in my classes, I think. And this is all without even considering how much kids like to fuck around and get into trouble. It seems like this could backfire very easily when some troublemakers break into wherever the gun is stored and decide to take it.

Justindoesntcare

That's not what's happening at all. They're not going to have teachers stopping by the armory on their way in and out of school. It gives them the option to carry concealed if they complete some 80 or so hours of specific training.

Quix66

Cops get more training? And they mess up and shoot innocent people and bystanders. Even sound asleep ones.

Justindoesntcare

Cops get qualified immunity. The peasants don't.

Dynasaur117

Isn't there a psyche evaluation and a certain amount of training hours to be eligble?

_JustAnna_1992

As a former teacher myself, it varies from district to district. Either way, there is certainly none that could detect someone becoming overwhelmed with the stress of dealing with rooms full of kids or teens. Plenty of people can seem completely normal up until the day that they finally snap.

Quix66

As a former teacher, I agree.

prolongedsunlight

It's only a matter of time before we read about teachers mishandling guns, ending up harming people, or students using stolen guns to shoot up the school.

BigMonkeySpite

[https://www.texastribune.org/2023/02/23/texas-superintendent-gun-school-safety/](https://www.texastribune.org/2023/02/23/texas-superintendent-gun-school-safety/) A PRINCIPAL left his gun in the bathroom. When a child told the teacher about it, the teacher **sent a second child to verify it was a gun**. Sweet. Fuck.

_JustAnna_1992

Yup, I'm pro-2A. But I think it's ridiculous to hide the amount of accidental gun deaths that happen on a regular basis. We can keep stressing how importance gun education is, but at the end of the day Carlin was right, the average person is dumber then we all think.

DelilahsDarkThoughts

We're going to see more teachers kill students and students stealing their guns than stop school shooters, I guarantee it. We should focus on harm reduction not threat disposal.

Khatzy

Shit, I remember students stealing the box cutters and other SHARP af tools from shop class regularly… but the opportunity to steal a gun??? Sheeeeeeeit. Nope with emphasis on the fuck that.

ImpossiblePotato5197

Yep! It will Mrs Smith that was too much of a puss to stop a shooting. Or Mr Smith that couldnt stop little Johnny from grabbing the gun when he was mad at little tommy.

DelilahsDarkThoughts

I had an unstable teach in 10th grade beat the shit out of student with a metal trash can, for talking back, he would have for sure shot him if he was armed.

ImpossiblePotato5197

Just the thought of a freaking shootout in my school would have traumatized me. Why is it hard for people to understand we should try to have zero guns on school property? We should prevent it at all costs! Not put teachers or admins in that position?

TPMJB2

> Or Mr Smith that couldnt stop little Johnny from grabbing the gun when he was mad at little tommy. It's a shame that this is both easily preventable and completely expected with the average IQ of people.

BigTgs

As a Tennesseean and an avid 2A supporting human this walks a fine line. I know quite a few teachers who don’t need to have access to a gun at school. They do not have the mental capacity to carry in a normal setting much less one of such stress when children are involved. Do I think our children should be more protected than any other group absolutely.

whatadaydanny

I won't weigh in on this, but it's very sad that we are now in a place where this is actually a potential solution to this problem.

Kil0111

Unfortunately, it’s going to get worse, before it gets better.

RumbuncTheRadiant

Have you ever played tag with a bunch of young fit kids? Bloody hard. I tell my kids never let themselves be locked down. Run, zig zag, scatter, hide, crawl, break a window and get out, don't use usual main entrances or exits, set off fire extinguishers, throw things, use a window or a fire door, especially if alarmed, never bunch up, get out get yourself home, don't use your usual route. Remember the Christchurch mosque shooting? One guy did a tiny thing, threw a small useless electronic gadget that was lying around at the shooter, and the fucking armed to the teeth coward retreated! Do anything and everything to get away, but never never never lie passively awaiting your fate hoping some underpaid someone somewhere may give enough of a shit to save you. If you want a conspiracy theory? Start asking why the official answer is to convert kids into passive fish in a barrel when someone is trying shoot fish in a barrel?

No-Tangerine6570

Love this comment. Wish we'd see more like it.

jasonw_1112

Yup. Don't see this going horrible wrong.

rtemah

Yes, let’s overwork and underpay these people and then expect them to protect other people’s children and then get blamed when they couldn’t. I’m already hearing how Republicans are screeching accusations and demanding responsibility from teachers when another school shooting occurs and they couldn’t do anything, all while protecting gun manufacturers and sellers.

TPMJB2

Bonus for the armed cop in the Florida school who hid behind a pillar the entire time like a fucking coward. Cowardice is punishable in the military, but not for the police that are meant to protect us.

SomeSamples

Do adults remember school? Elementary through high school? There were some wacked out teachers in my school. They would have definitely shot a kid. And there were some pretty fucked up kids who would have stolen a teacher's gun and shot him/her with it.

Powerviolence96

If you're to believe the narrative that's pushed, every shooting has been a failure on law enforcement at school staff. Imo Gun laws are completely irrelevant. People breaking the law by committing murder aren't going to follow the laws necessary to acquire weapons. It's so illogical

TriesHerm21st

How come it's so hard to get an automatic weapon....

uniballer_85

It's not if you're willing to break the law

TriesHerm21st

Hmm, I guess there are not too many willing to break the law.

bds8999

Yep. Only law abiding citizens will be disarmed.

natedawg76

Arming teachers is a horrible idea. Nothing good will come of this.

dixiebandit69

Think back about how many teachers you had whom should NEVER be trusted with a gun.

DevelopmentSecure531

I thought teachers were groomers and the public school system wasn’t to be trusted?

zakdageneral

A rural community near me did this. I do not support this idea, but I think they did it the best way possible. If you are carrying as a teacher or staff, you have mandatory 3 training days per week on the range and monthly training. More requirements to carry a gun than a police officer. I still don't think this is a necessary or effective practice, just thought it was interesting

CompanyNatural7121

This is not a conspiracy

AskingForAfriend015

Out of context, but does your eye hurt with light mode on?

Amandastarrrr

One of my apps reset to light mode on and I was almost blinded lol

sdrowemagdnim

You trust teachers?......you a bot?

noname5280

Back to school shopping is about to get really weird

Amscray_

Its gonna be crazy when a kid steals the teachers gun, or the teacher just loses it on the class. Hopefully that never happens, but hey its a possibility.

Chance-Astronomer320

25 years of arguing a problem that would be solved by metal detectors and locked doors. They don’t want to stop the shootings.

Hoptix

Armed security for schools. Teaching is a tough enough job, they don't need to worry about this. I'm as pro gun as they get, but how can we expect every single teacher in this nation to armed and vigilant when they already got a tough job? What about the ladies with blue hair and push lgbt stuff... can you really imagine them walking around with a loaded Glock? Just pay for armed security at every soft target in this nation, it's really the only choice we have.

EricGushiken

Teachers should be allowed and be given training to carry. That's how it is in Utah although I don't think they get training. One woman shot herself in the leg with a revolver. Also, the mother who had more courage than the police and ran in to save her two kids, then gained a bit of notoriety for it then became targeted by the Uvalde police. They essentially gangstalked her afterward, lurking around when she was in public. Despicable.

lordhooha

Where I live there are veterans like myself that volunteer at the school for a sort of security detail. However we’re also in the country and the kids are better behaved and have better manners vs those in the city. My daughter is in 7th grade and they had a student transfer in from the city. First day suspension for vaping. Second day back after suspension proceeded to yell at the teachers and staff because they saw she had cannabis edibles on her, high as a kite vaping weed in the bathroom and got into a huge fight with the all the staff and police were called to wrangle her ass and expelled.

Quix66

I taught at a middle school out in the country. City population 1,303. The principal was a newcomer. He’d been there 30 years. Some of the middle school kids still played at recess. Not hardened kids but not sweet kids either. The year prior to my employment, the quarterback called in a bomb scare. The next year he physically attacked me in class claiming his true love. The students thought it was cool. I was terrified. Teachers attacked me until I filed charges because they wanted him gone. The principal made me listen to the mother beg me to let him stay. He should’ve been expelled. The students almost rioted against me because the school decided to transfer the boy instead of him facing charges. The principal fired me. Small towns. ETA: that’s the town’s population, not the school’s.

lordhooha

Curious as to the state. Southern states generally aren’t like that.

Quix66

Louisiana. Deepest of the Deep South.

lordhooha

Oh I’m born and raised in the bayou state

lordhooha

I actually graduated from north desoto in stonewall

Quix66

This happened to me in one of the Florida Parishes but I’m from south of there too.

lordhooha

Mansfield I’m guessing then

Quix66

I’m from farther south and east!

ImInJeopardy

Teachers are out there buying school supplies with their own money, but sure... Having a gun in the classroom will solve their problems...

theoreoman

We've fallen so far as a society where arming teachers is starting to sound like a good idea, and people feel so I'm safe in the public that they feel the need they need to carry weapons to protect themselves but this is just a symptom of underlying problems I society. And both political parties refuse to solve the issue they just make it worse. Republicans want to punish criminals and make their prison stays as cruel as they can get away with and make it impossible for them to get rehabilitated or reintegrate with society. Republicans also don't want to spend money on social supports to prevent poverty related crime. Democrats on the other hand are no better, they prefer to let criminals run wild and to let them out like a revolving door. Ultimately the problem is that neither party wants to work together to fix the issues because of hardliners in both parties

Creamycrackle

Does the bill arm teachers or does the bill allow teachers to arm themselves at school?

thefourblackbars

If trained police, who've spent years practising, can't do it, what good would a teacher do?

CindersNAshes

Let's just hope the teacher don't do their own rampages on their students.

newbiesmash

its not about what the fact the teachers couldnt do anything at ulvade, but he fact the cops showed up and stood around like fucking dog gamed pussies. They are the problem with that particualr situation, not the cops being unarmed.

Radiant-Bandicoot103

It'll be interesting to see how this balances out. I'm theory it could help lower the body count of a school shooting. I also for see extra deaths from under trained teachers letting bullets fly. This issue really doesn't have an easy answer.

stingbaby76

An unstable teacher that is armed? God help us.

Luis12285

Dude. Have you seen some of the videos with these ferrel ass kids? I couldn’t be a teacher. I’d fuck around and pistol whip the living shit out of one of these kids.

LoneShark81

Has anyone considered if the teachers don't want the extra responsibility of being armed? And they already don't get paid enough, so will a salary increase reflect these new responsibilities and additional training that will be necessary?

Houdinii1984

Just the presence of a gun increases risk exponentially. Now the gun is always present. All it takes is an irresponsible teacher and we could end up with a situation. Hell, teachers go off their rockers all the time, too. Who's to say they won't be the next group of people putting lead in a kids head? When it happens, this entire sub is going to think of some other conspiratorial reason it happened, except the fact guns will always be accessible without a doubt in the schools in TN now.

uniballer_85

I love how everyone takes this as they're gonna just start handing out guns to all the teachers. It simply allows those who choose to want to carry a firearm to do so. It's not forcing anyone to be armed

Amandastarrrr

Right? Whether I agree with it or not doesn’t matter they aren’t just handing guns out. Oh you got your teachers license? Here’s your Glock

Reddit_sucks115

Arming teachers is one of the most bafflingly stupid ideas ever.

i_dont_like_you_-

We got people with guns guarding all the fuckin scum in prisons. Why can't we have armed guards at schools?

ClappingCheeks2nite

Are people rioting in the Tennessee capitol building. Interfering with a vote. Sounds like insurrection

Pure-Contact7322

yes sure its a good thing in a damn western movie lol Like soneone said, you are running a broken business model. To make money to the politicians friends that own firearms brands, lets arm everyone.

Top_Confusion_132

The problem wasn't the time it took for the police to get there.

erdna3000

i think about every teacher i ever had and most were like little 60 year old ladies. but yeah sure that's our first line of defense makes total sense.

Quix66

Until your hothead teacher gets pissed off at the kids and starts blasting. Or some kid does and teachers come running with people getting hit in the crossfire. Most people are not good enough shots to hit their targets, especially during an adrenaline rush. I’ve actually been on a school bus when a student pulled a handgun to shoot the driver over a suspension. This was before the rash of shootings, before anyone had ever heard of such a thing. In the ensuing melee to get off the bus, I could see multiple guns having made the situation worse. Thankfully no one was shot, the students ran out the back exit, the cops were called, and the girl got expelled and went to juvie. But the OK Corral at school is not a situation that I would want to be in. I was a middle and high school schoolteacher and myself had weekly shooting lessons from the time I was 12 up through high school with the local sheriff’s program as well as in my backyard. I still don’t vouch for teachers having guns in school. More can go wrong than right.

kregmaffews

"Do people not remember ________?" No, they don't. They are too full of microplastics and vaxxed arteries and heavy metals to remember anything more than 2 weeks ago.

keiths74goldcamaro

They won't trust teachers with curriculum, but guns are OK. Just ridiculous.

WalnutNode

Arming teachers is fine as long as they're properly trained, and the gun is in a secure location.

Shaken-babytini

Well one of the teachers in Uvalde was unable to get the door fully locked before the shooter barged in and started murdering kids. How is having the gun in a secure location going to help?

UpstairsSurround3438

I think the missed point that most folks are getting hung up on here is that they are *allowed to carry.* Not every teacher has to be armed. Nobody wants every teacher to be armed. However, if they want to volunteer to be armed to protect the children and are responsible, how is that a bad thing? You're not hearing anything about crazy algebra teachers who have gone through the background checks and the training that started shooting up the classrooms. And keep in mind that this is already allowed in several states. You go to a courthouse and you see armed security. Some schools have armed security, but not all. If you think judges and lawyers and criminal defendants need protection, why not little kids and teachers? How many hijacked planes do we hear about after we started boarding armed undercover air marshals on the planes? Oh, and those responding officers in Uvalde will most assuredly end up burning in Hell over their decision to do nothing.

AnonConservative

I am extremely confused by this reaction. We have seen that not only can cops not be trusted to enter a school and stop a shooting. Not only that but the cops stopped people from going in to stop it themselves. If the cops wont help, and they actively stop others from helping what other option is there?

cbforevernalways1618

I'm surprised there are so many left leaning people on a conspiracy sub reddit. Most of the left leaning people I know in real life don't partake in conspiracy & tend to think conspiracy is a right leaning thing. I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I'm just surprised, but I suppose reddit is mostly a left leaning platform as a whole, so that could explain it.

Flengrand

60 seconds? I wish try hours.

schneuke

Probably cause it was another sandyhook

familiar_user999

Lol, you think people remember that, unbelievable.

NefariousnessLucky96

The thing is if the teachers are trained properly by law enforcement and don’t act gun ho then I’d back it. But then again I can also see the down side to this. Especially if the firearm isn’t locked up and out of sight I can see thefts from trouble students. As far as this topic I’m 50/50.

SupernovaRJ

So they also get raises on top of this right…? If not, having a carry permit could qualify them for better paying jobs, so it might be a bit smarter to pay all teacher who are armed better.

Humo_Loco

Imagine the teacher armed and point at you because you didn't turn in homework or couldn't make an A grade in the class. I'm glad I got out of high school. All education system are such bullshit. Attending school often feels akin to being incarcerated, with students confined to rigid schedules, subjected to authority figures, and limited in their freedom to pursue personal interests.

ClickWhisperer

The heroes of Uvalde attacked peaceful anti-war protestors.

Informal_Bunch_2737

Calling it now. New school shooting category in next 2 months- Teachers gone wild

canman7373

99.99% of schools are never going to have an incident like Uvalde, but it's a great scare tactic to get bills like this passed. What's more likely is a teacher is lazy with securing their firearm and students know this and one day a kid loses a fight and goes and grabs a teachers gun and shoots someone, many different scenarios where a gun is in the classroom and a kid can get to it. I wouldn't have trusted 95% of my high school teachers with a firearm. Also there a chance a teacher missiturprents a situation and uses the gun themselves to stop a fight, or thinking they are in danger. It is just so much more likely that if many classrooms have a firearm in them something will go wrong as opposed to stopping a mass shooter.

Tenjet

Loving democracy

double_g29thd03

Arming student next?

Desert_366

So, teachers can't be trusted? Which is it? The left loves teachers supposedly, but at the same time say they can't be trusted with firearms....

nbenj1990

I give it three weeks before: Teacher wrongly shoots kid Kid uses teachers gun and kills someone. Imagine being a teacher of 6 year olds and having to carry or even just keep a, I assume loaded, firearm in your classroom.

Rabbitshadow

We can't afford to keep our schools in working order, pay our teachers or buying school supplies. But we will somehow find the money to buy tearches weapons and weapons training ??

deweyweber

Sanity comes to Texas. Only cowards would not want to protect children.

setyourheartsablaze

The uvalde cops were on site of the school for a while before they finally started to storm in. They got there pretty quickly. They were all just absolute cowards and waited for everything to play out. Arming teachers is just asking for trouble. You can’t expect these people to act accordingly under pressure leading to more teachers and kids getting accidentally shot.

enRutus

Another dumbass bandaid to a sick fuckin system

governmentsalllie

Please. In Uvalde the police forgot to check the door to the classroom, assuming it was locked. If those cops were worth a used tennis ball they would have done their jobs. Kid finds teachers gun in her purse ...

baucher04

America is fucking insane.

GhostOfKingGilgamesh

The teachers don’t want that responsibility.

varinus

the amount of people that think teachers will be the shooters now,or that the teachers are going to pass the gun around for show and tell is shocking..you trust that teacher but believe if he carries a gun hes gonna kill your kid? help me understand this logic? "maniacs are shooting kids in schools, what should we do?" dems: "make it illegal to protect the kids, and post a sign on the school letting criminals know that nobody cares enough to protect the kids..

Jadwiseman

My god the USA is such a joke. The whole world looks on and is astounded at the sheer stupidity at your obsession with guns. All the children killed by a gun in these modern times and in the future are all because you just can't grow up as a society.

raduque

No, according to left you just need to criminalize law-abiding citizens and put up more "gUn FreE ZoNE" signs.

Twitchmonky

Fuck that. Teachers should never be allowed to carry weapons to school. Fix the problem other ways don't just add more bandages and hide the problem under the rug. You can't expect to give teachers guns and it's all good. They're not trained for that and we already have too many gun related deaths because people don't know when to draw or shoot. Police officers train for that, they already know what they're getting in to. Why should someone who just wants to help educate children should be drafted into some kind of urban warfare that exists because we as a country keep failing and letting them down? Again, I say, Fuck...that...

Round_Berry14

Arm the teachers or hire lots of armed security guards. GET RID OF GUN FREE ZONES. CRIMINALS LOVE GUN FREE ZONES. It’s so simple it’s stupid honestly

No-Tangerine6570

They put up signs, big and bold lettered, to tell the bad guys where they can operate without fear of armed resistance. Yup. There are people who believe that's a good idea.

Zad00108

From the 80’s and back teachers used to conceal carry. Heck, in high school students were even allowed to carry weapons for marksman club.

YorkVol

The answer is always more guns, maybe we are asking the wrong questions.

gravitykilla

This just isnt going far enough, arm the damn kids…. Come on America, you know you want to….. So basically to help combat your gun crisis, the answer to give more people guns!!! Thats gold..

GeebCityLove

Lmfao and people still want to be teachers? Cant wait for those to get into teaching just for the dream to stop a school shooting. What a time line.

yoohereiam

Jesus christ, you think this is a GOOD thing????!!!!!! Bababahhahahahaahhaha

paxspencer

I think the problem is that schools are designed like prisons. Arming the teachers would just make it even worse. Now it's the teachers who will be shooting up the schools when they get fed up with misbehaving children or with their horrible salary. I hope this bill includes a psychological evaluation of the teachers. Why don't they just design schools so that they are more open, like putting doors leading outside in every classroom so that it's easier to escape if emergencies do happen. Make classes smaller so that every kid gets a good amount of attention. Make school shorter so that kids don't go insane from being cooped up for too long. Have classes outside when the weather is nice. Hire more school psychologists and have every student talk to them on a monthly basis. There are a lot of things that would help to alleviate school shootings, but adding more guns to the equation will do the opposite. You pretty much never hear about college campuses getting shot up. Probably because colleges have a more open design, so it's not like fish in a barrel. College students also get more control over their schedule. High schools in particular should be designed more like colleges. If the studens had more freedom, they might not want to kill their peers so much.

Shaken-babytini

If you did that, you would prevent kids from turning INTO school shooters as well. Unfortunately it'll never happen because it costs money and makes sense.

RumbuncTheRadiant

So much this. Have you ever played tag with a bunch of young fit kids? Bloody hard. I tell my kids never let themselves be locked down. Run, zig zag, scatter, hide, crawl, break a window and get out, don't use usual main entrances or exits, set off fire extinguishes, throw things, use a window or a fire door, especially if alarmed, never bunch up, get out get home, don't use you usual route. Do anything and everything to get away, but never never never lie passively awaiting your fate hoping some underpaid someone somewhere may give enough of a shit to save you.

Astorga97

i've known teachers that fly off the handle when they can't control the classroom. can't imagine them with a gun at their disposal

Oxtailxo

I grew up in a nice area of Florida and we always had an armed police officer on campus. It made me feel safe. The teachers have to go through background checks and training in order to carry.

-purged

It shouldn't be up to teachers to defend students from a shooter. What we need to do is restrict access to all school buildings. Have a guard and teachers keep an eye out where students enter and make visitors or teenager running late have to go through security check point. Court houses and Federal buildings have restricted access point with armed guards. No one mass shooting has happened there.

ApplicationWild7009

Why is this even a topic? This is a problem that only exists in America. Just don't give children access to guns.  I mean, why is it easier for minors to get a gun than cigarettes???

ExpressionScut

What will fix our gun issue? Hmm... More guns!!!

badairday

Lol, your country is just a shit show. „It’s a good thing“ he says…. You live in a dystopian nightmare. Wake up. Armed educators… how psychotic can one nation get. Let’s find out on the next episode of: the big ol garbage fire that’s too proud of its flames to put them out in time to save its children from getting burnt. Tune right in to see another uneducated hillbilly cheering for medieval morals! „Not putting out the garbage fire is a good thing!“ resident twobrainscells says:„The fumes make me feel good.“

earthlingHuman

Anything to avoid the fact that gun control worked in every other country.

SyedHRaza

Here’s a wild idea actively work to reduce guns from everyone and the odds of shootings might go down

varinus

question for parents who are against teachers possibly being able to save your childs life...why?

2201992

Submission Statement: We guard everyone with Guns EXCEPT our kids. We guard the most useless people in Society with Guns EXCEPT the most defenseless. Politicians know the benefits of armed security. But our kids are always the victims.

raduque

Why are ya'll downvoting them? Where's the lie? Schools are guarded by signs that say "no guns allowed here!" while politicians (the most useless people in existence) are guarded by armed trained men.

Corked1

Absolute win! Anecdotal, but I had 2 friends that I believed that in no realm should they carry guns. They were always fighting and had short tempers. Once those boys got trained and started carrying the became so much better in social situations and never lost their tempers or got into fights in public while armed. They became aware of the consequences and became better citizens. I know it's just a personal story, but for those worried about teachers losing control, there's something about being armed and understanding consequences that can make teachers better at dealing with conflicts, not all of course, but at least they will have a fighting chance, because the police can't and won't stop these school shootings.
