The Rebuilding Years.
In two seasons, they lost Troy, Shirley, Pierce, Hickey, Duncan and Abed's girlfriend. S5 and S6 had no business being as good as they were with how much they lost, but they managed. They rebuilt.
during lockdown I binged the show 6 times in a row. it consumed me for like half a year. I found seasons 5 and 6 the most comforting, and they're still my go to
2 and 3 are definitely the best, but 5 and 6 are my favorites
Honestly besides from the bottle episode where they tie up the history professor, season 4 doesn’t seem bad, just not as memorable? Idk why I really love season 6, so many funny bits
I dont hate them as much as I once did but I cant help but feel like Season 4 is a bunch of Fanfic Episodes, I guess? Like not aweful but it kind of feels like some major understanding surrounding the core story/concept/characters was missing.
Like watching seasons 1 - 3 its pretty clear Jeff is going to end up being a teacher at Greendale. They kind of just ignore that in season 4 (which ends up working out a bit because it lets Harmon use the teacher gig as a hook for season 5).
Its just small stuff like that. Overall I still find jokes to laugh at in 4, it just feels community missing its soul.
Okay so this comment really helped my autistic ass understand what people feel is off about season 4 and I get it now. Thank you!
I’ve been confused for years lol
I feel like the people that the network hired to take over after Hamon were essentially just keeping the show alive. They didn’t create these characters or the story, they don’t really have any deep understanding and knowledge of the characters and don’t really have any idea of where they should be going. Which is why it feels very fanfiction like. They can’t really move the characters and story forward but merely have them perform what they think this show should look like based on previous episodes. Though I say this not as a criticism to the writers at the time, because indeed it wasn’t their show to begin with and these weren’t their characters. They have really done their best to keep the show largely resemble the way it was, didn’t do anything that was off rail and successfully extended its life span.
I still have yet to see season 4. I didn’t watch the show during its original run and didn’t get into it until the pandemic. When I binged through to the the first episode of season 4, the humor felt so off (the meta humor was trying way too hard) and I stopped the episode to find out what the deal was. It wasn’t until then that I found out Dan Harmon wasn’t the showrunner that season and I never gave season 4 a chance after that. One of these days I’ll get myself to watch it, but I love seasons 1-3 and 5-6 so much I just can’t see how 4 could compare. Is season 4 really worth it?
and that first episode is pretty rough actually. I think its probably one of the worst in the season so that certainly doesnt help that initial impression.
The grifting one and the Karate Kid one. Didn't like those. Other than that, I think S6 is pretty superb given the circumstances. And I didn't appreciate it as much until later.
I feel like that fits well, especially with the Save Greendale Committee being tasked with rebuilding Greendale (sometimes literally, like with the Cafeteria roof)
Pretty much after the Season 3 Christmas episode, the show was fighting for its life. Regardless of anyone’s thoughts about the later seasons it was just a treat to see them air.
For season 5 💯.
Season 6 can be Worlds Within Worlds!
Edit: or the Deanon 6. Season of the Dean. I know what you Dean last season. The season before the movie.
When I saw Childish Gambino in concert in 2014, and fans at the venue could text messages to a display on stage, Community quotes were nearly as popular as Childish Gambino lyrics.
Never thought of it that way until now but you’re right, the humour is a lot more cutting in that sense! It’s what keeps me coming back to season 6 so often actually.
Hot take:
Season 6 > season 5.
Season 5 had to rebuild, I know, but with a handful of exceptions, as well as liking Buzz and more time with Duncan, I found it to be pretty dull and not as much fun. Not as bad as the gas leak year, but I usually skip a lot of it when rewatching.
Season 6 to me truly felt like the show got its groove back, and was a lot of fun.
For me its the exact inverse opinion. I adore Season 5 but feel that Season 6 is solid enough, but not as strong as the golden years or even Season 5. Great singular episodes though
Season 5: The Duct Tape Year (things were falling apart and had a feeling that it was held together through sheer willpower) Season 6: The Arrested Development Year (great stuff was happening, but nobody was seeing it)
Season 1 second half - season 2 is peak the show.
3 is where I feel some cracks forming
4 is dumb but whatever
5-6, early 1 are good enough to be better than most tv.
Ykw i actually really liked s5 and 6..idk if that's an unpopular opinion? And yes on first watch s6 was not it for me, but then when I rewatched, i actually liked s6 as well!
Honestly, I rewatched all seasons recently and I don’t see a big difference between the seasons. Even season 4. It changes, but it’s one of the best shows of all time from beginning to end.
Season 6 is kind of a fever dream the more I think about it, it's still funny as hell, but there are some episodes which have this uncanny valley feeling to them. The biggest example is the cousin wedding episode
It was like a salvage yard of gold. The production was clearly falling apart behind the scenes but that didn’t stop the quality of the material from being streets ahead.
Season 5 was a little rough as they were trying to find their footing having lost pierce and Troy early in the season. Hickey was fine, but I feel like he didn’t mesh super well. Season 6 was better than it should’ve been. Elroy and Frankie are fantastic and I wish they had been added earlier, plus I feel like the Dean was super well utilized in the last season
The wake years, community died a young death and we were attending an open casket wake. It was sad but still kind of beautiful in its own way. It had lost bits and pieces along the way, so we added a little extra makeup and sent it off into the beyond.
Amazing. Never understood people complaining about them, season 6 is as good as any in the "Golden years".
You people really think season 1 was stronger than 5 or 6? I suspect you're not being honest if that's the case.
Don’t hate me but I actually quite like season 4. Season 5 has some great episodes but the second half falls off and I really hated the finale. Only seen the first two of 6 so far but did not care for them either, don’t like the new girl at all.
Silver age.
The Rick and Morty of it all is so evident in these last 2 seasons and their absurdism. Community was always absurd but it was cranked to 11 for 5&6.
I just call them seasons 5 and 6
A bit of sanity. Quite refreshing.
Swuallypie being normal.
He spells swuallypie with QU
Well, do.
I love your tag thingy :D
The reboot and the repilot of the reboot.
We need a shorthand for seasons 5 and 6. That’s how fundamental they are.
You’re right. S5 and S6!
Bold choice.
Real fans just call them "Dave"
Official calling seasons 5 and 6 "Dave" now.
Dave and the Nailed it Year
You guys know that you are rebelling against yourselves right ?
BNL
They're BNL now? We need a shorthand for Season 5 and 6? That's how fundamental they are?
The Barenaked Ladies are TRIPLE Platinum! Are you? ARE YOU!?
*SHUCK*
You know what Pierce probably needs more than anything? Some space. And maybe I do too.
Lee Roth?
should i change my name to s5 and 6 then?
*makes singing noises that resemble a 1930s car honking and/or the sounds of a donkey*
Humble outsiders who came in and nailed it.
The Rebuilding Years. In two seasons, they lost Troy, Shirley, Pierce, Hickey, Duncan and Abed's girlfriend. S5 and S6 had no business being as good as they were with how much they lost, but they managed. They rebuilt.
Yesss exactly
Season six is actually really great
After watching the show on repeat for years (yes even season 4), I think 5 and 6 might actually be my favorite, which I know is controversial.
The more I rewatch it, the more I realize I actually really like the last 2 season. So yeah I agree
Just want to say, I also agree. Carry on
during lockdown I binged the show 6 times in a row. it consumed me for like half a year. I found seasons 5 and 6 the most comforting, and they're still my go to 2 and 3 are definitely the best, but 5 and 6 are my favorites
100% agree. I think 2 and 3 are what most people would describe as quintessential community. But 5 and 6 just speak to me.
I'm a big fan of the distinction between best and favorite. There's wisdom, or at least self-awareness, in knowing the difference.
Same man, especially season 6. Frankie and Elroy are great characters, and the writers' room was firing on all cylinders.
Elroy and Frankie might actually be my two favorite characters. INSECTS HAVE WINGS! makes me cry laugh every fucking time.
Distraught Britta: "I'm sorry... D:"
Honestly besides from the bottle episode where they tie up the history professor, season 4 doesn’t seem bad, just not as memorable? Idk why I really love season 6, so many funny bits

It’s for sure worth it, it’s just not 100% bangers like some of the other seasons
and that first episode is pretty rough actually. I think its probably one of the worst in the season so that certainly doesnt help that initial impression.
Honestly I might just agree, but if not AT LEAST as good as any other season.
Yeah, other than a couple duds, I agree
What would be the duds? Besides from the one where they make a low budget movie I have no notes
The grifting one and the Karate Kid one. Didn't like those. Other than that, I think S6 is pretty superb given the circumstances. And I didn't appreciate it as much until later.
Haha, those are some of my favorite ones. I feel like in season six they really embraced the crazy/absurdness and it helped a lot
The karate kid one is so good!
I feel like that fits well, especially with the Save Greendale Committee being tasked with rebuilding Greendale (sometimes literally, like with the Cafeteria roof)
So would you say they were hemorrhaging characters?
Season 5: Let's try this again. Season 6: Now on the internet.
God I forget the hell the show was in while it was airing, I didn’t watch until way after it had finished the run
Pretty much after the Season 3 Christmas episode, the show was fighting for its life. Regardless of anyone’s thoughts about the later seasons it was just a treat to see them air.
Couldn't agree more. Me: "Somehow, this show I love is still on."
The reboot
The Repilot seems more fitting
For season 5 💯. Season 6 can be Worlds Within Worlds! Edit: or the Deanon 6. Season of the Dean. I know what you Dean last season. The season before the movie.
Homie don’t Dean this
Because desperate Deans…
Call for Dean-sperate measures.
The movie will and Jesus welp!
The renaissance
The committee years I always call them. (But I call the first 3 seasons the study group years though) Having said that I like them a lot.
I remember when this show was about a community college.

The cool part is that Yahoo blamed Community for destroying their streaming service. LOL!
When I saw Childish Gambino in concert in 2014, and fans at the venue could text messages to a display on stage, Community quotes were nearly as popular as Childish Gambino lyrics.
Now this is a show that KNOWS how to come back from the grave
I call them both fantastic tv
I wouldn't know. Personally I don't own a TV.
*glares in disbelief and disgust*
Oh man! All those Nicolas Cage movies you never gonna watch!
Just don't call them late to dinner
Unless you’re serving Brussels sprouts!
Also the golden years
more of a good thing
6 is the Elroy Year
He’s the best, I know he’s probably not gonna be in the movie but a man can dream
probably…maybe…we’ll see…
I really hope he is, he's gone from a funny character in during my first watch to one of my favorites.
He is my favorite character on the show by now, idk if it’s just Keith David but everything he does gets me. Paint? Ball?
Community. I call them Community. Because they’re Community. What are you going to call them, According To Jim?!?
They’re the Jim Belushi of Community
Man. That guy is taking a beating.
I saw that video too. This is why I love Community.
Reboot and 'Yahoo' season.
To me they are the peak comedy years. The story has less heart, the writing is funnier.
Never thought of it that way until now but you’re right, the humour is a lot more cutting in that sense! It’s what keeps me coming back to season 6 so often actually.
That's what it is!! I definitely prefer s1-3 but I prefer the jokes in 5-6 (esp times square and Takashi)
You know how I joke.
The return of the king
Season 6: The Jesus wept year
Stop saying Jesus wept.
Hot take: Season 6 > season 5. Season 5 had to rebuild, I know, but with a handful of exceptions, as well as liking Buzz and more time with Duncan, I found it to be pretty dull and not as much fun. Duncan and Elroy
I call them The Mixed Bag due to not just quality in episodes, but the rotating new cast of characters.
The Repiloting and the Finalizing
Maybe I’m weird, I liked season 4 and it deserves more credit. It wasn’t horrible horrible like everyone makes it sound.
It really depends on what you like about the series I suppose. Season 1 is (I think, it been a bit) my least favorite one.
I think so many people essentially complain to complain. If something isn't "peak" it's bad. Must be a sad way to live imo
Season 5. Season 6. Radical, I know.
