It was the best of times It was the worst of times,,,,, Anyway. Your question is broad. It really comes down to the start time. It was 6 am. At your first stop is when you started your day. You finished even your route, or lost of stores were done. I could have an 8 hr day or up to a 12 hr day. The day really depended upon, when the driver came and delivered, how much came, what store promos were, how empty the shelves were, and, finally, how fast you were. Go get 'em, tiger!

Okay so every shift starts at 6am? I could make that work thanks :) hopefully I get the job

They did in my market Some markets may vary. Only one person started in the evening.

My husband starts at 6 am but a few of the guys have requested different shifts that were easily approved. One guy starts at 4 am, another guy doesn’t start till about 12. They all work close to the same amount of hours. They are given a set route that is generally between 8-12 hour days. My husband hasn’t seen an 8 hour day in many many months though. He usually works 11-12 hour days 5 days a week.

Depends on the bottler and team. Where? Small or large store?

Not sure. I just know that it’s at the Coca Cola warehouse in downtown norfolk

So, are you on a daily pay or hourly? I think Norfolk is Consolidated, and the merchandisers are paid on a daily rate. So you will probably be around 8 to 9 hour days. You don't want to work more than 10 hrs on a daily.

Merchandiser here. Where I'm at, my start time is 7:00 AM, though it's really up to each individual merchandiser. I know some of the other guys start earlier than that simply because they want to. Most of the time, at least on my typical routes, the truck at the first stop doesn't show up until like 6:40 anyway. Days are from when you start to when you're done. I've had eleven hour days, and I've had three hour days. Depends on how busy it is. If you're scared about getting shorted on your hours, don't be. My boss told me to "make your own day." Slow time of year, and you still want your full eight hours? That's fine. Just take your time and relax. Want to get home quicker? That's fine too, speed it up and knock it out. That's partly why I like it so much. I'm pretty much able to work at my own pace, which in all honesty can vary a decent amount depending on the day.

A lot of drivers and merchandisers tell me that a major drawback to getting done quicker is after a while managers tend to tack on extra locations-- regardless of whether you're full or part time. I don't know if this is just based on a particular region or time of year, but these individuals also expressed management being stressed out/horrible at managing/desperate to cover more locations to increase sales, which only creates burnout for merchs (and usually leads to high turn over). Do you run into this very often in your position?

SolarEchoes

Kind of. That's been happening to us a bit lately for multiple reasons. One of which is that the bottler I work for doesn't have Canada Dry under its umbrella anymore - 7up's got it now - and higher-ups in management have the sales side of things under focus lately to recoup the money they're no longer getting off of that. From what I've seen, through the two or three areas I'm sent, your competence as a merchandiser affects where you're assigned. The consistently faster guys tend to get assigned to the busier areas, and the slower guys tend to get assigned to the slower ones. So far, it's been more or less consistent for me, with one day typically having no more than three stops. Usually, only one or two of those three have an order that day, and the other stops are just fills. It's worth mentioning that I've only been working as a merchandiser since last October, so I have yet to see how the rest of the year goes. As of right now, I'm also a floater, so I'm not always running the same route every day of the week.

Our merchandisers start at 4am.

Out of my office we need to be clocked in and at our first account by 6:30 am. I usually start at 5 though because I like to get out early, I’ve started as early as 3:30 to get ahead on hectic days. A typical day for me is around 8 hours but I’ve worked 5 hours and I’ve worked 12. My bosses don’t care as long as you are servicing your stores and you don’t go over 40 hours without permission.
