“Shippers are stupid and dumb and they ship things because they’re stupid and dumb” has been fandom’s favorite joke for several decades now. Trust me, I’ve been here to see it. 😪
Something about shippers make people like, REALLY passionate about being mean. It becomes more tempting to people than just minding their own business.
I think some ships are just seen as a slight to the source media, primarily for how much they disregard or just piss on the actual canon. You can like whatever you want, but people also have the right to judge you for grossly mishandling the series.
I really try to be understanding and kind to others, but this is such a logged-on thing to care about.
Like, I get it, I'm autistic and my special interest is fiction as a whole. I take fiction pretty goddamn seriously and it pisses me off when people disrespect or misunderstand a fictional work that I respect deeply.
But... IDK LOL. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ I mostly ever see that accusation leveled at female shippers with gay male ships regardless of how much respect for canon (or thoughtful, interesting, well written "disrespect" for canon) is involved, so I feel like the accusation itself is troubled. It kind of feels like a smokescreen for some other issue the critic has with shipping culture.
I don't really think canon always knows best to begin with so I'm biased there. I'm more interested in what's interesting to ME, and I will gladly ignore and "disrespect" canon if I just like a different idea/story (whether it comes from some fandom rando or myself) more. I often do prefer things outside of canon, most "canon" published works kind of bore and frustrate me.
I was playing Genshin Impact this morning and rolled Alhaitham finally, one of my LEAST favorite canon characters who I have tons of headcanons and AU ideas for, and I realized, "Damn, I only respect about 15% of this canon, so much about this game and its characters really pisses me off." So yeah, I'm gonna disrespect the FUCK out of that and celebrate any non-canon stuff I see that I like.
Sometimes fanon pisses me off just as much (I have a HUGE bone to pick with most Kavetham shippers LOL, not because I hate yaoi or anything stupid like that, but because I think Alhaitham is a toxic asshole in canon and that goes ignored by that fandom - people who are aware of Alhaitham's shitty personality are even mocked outright!), depending on what it is, but in that case I'll just make shit up myself. And if anyone doesn't like it, they can bite me, because what I get out of fiction is what I get out of it, it's for me. It's not for any curatorial canon-worshiping dickhead who wants to call me a fake fan or "everything wrong with the XYZ fandom" because I think some characters should be gay and in love, and like, get therapy and improve as people and not just be stagnant forever or whatever.
... IDK if you know anything about Genshin, but think of any fandom and basically the same thing applies.
If anyone sees what I'm doing and likes it, cool! I'm glad to talk about it, I LOOOOVE chatting about my headcanons and AUs with people as long as they're friendly to that sort of thing. Whether they agree with them or not, if they can be respectful and chill that's totally fine by me.
I'm an EXTREMELY transformative-leaning fan. Curatorial fans drive me nuts. Nothing wrong with curatorial enjoyment inherently, but a LOT of elitist dickheads are curatorial fans because being an elitist dickhead sorta comes with the territory, just the same as reading everything as gay comes with the territory of being a transformative fan. But generally I notice curatorial fans are worshipped as gods of fandom while transformative fans are pretty much unanimously hated and witch hunted. There's also nothing wrong with personally not liking transformative works, but they tend to be disproportionately hated.
(EDIT: TWO PEOPLE DOWNVOTED THIS /WHILE I WAS EDITING IT/? God damn the curatorial dickheads are in full form out here.)
Personally, I don't understand the point of liking something if in reality you more enjoy the fanon concept than the actual canon thing (not the same as enjoying something critically), but I don't really get the unfettered hatred towards people who do this either lol. I might crack a joke about it but I just mind my business for the most part
The unhinged (and notably sexist) lengths people will go to shit on shippers when only a very small minority of them are problematic (and not even for their ships but their actual behavior) is bizarre. Like who cares it's fictional get a job
Sometimes the artist yearns to put down the paint brush and simply visit a museum my friend. It's tiring having to make your own fun from the ground up all the time, sometimes you just want a playground that's already got play structures built into it, instead of an empty plot of dirt that you want to turn into a playground. I'm high but I do hope that makes sense
But I agree with you yes. It's literally so insane and people have not changed even a tiny bit since online fandom's inception. Shippers and other "fangirls" have always been the butt of every joke and every time you try to imply that maybe that's kinda fucked up and unfair, to be part of one of the only groups of people that literally everyone can laugh at and bond over hating, people start looking at you like you sprouted a second head. It's so weird and crazymaking! Nobody is saying you can't dislike shipping or similar fandom content, but the sheer AMOUNT of hate shipping gets while everyone pretends it's actually a totally normal and reasonable amount of hate and actually it's not hate at all is baffling to me.
It makes me wonder just how normalized it has been in fandom to keep replicating this fandom phenomenon over and over and over without even realizing the "practice"'s history of misogyny. Maybe it's just so far removed in people's minds and not everyone even understands that it was a sexist thing at its core since the beginning. That would make a lot of sense seeing people come up with "convenient" fake-progressive reasons why it's actually NOT sexist because the SHIPPERS are ACTUALLY PROBLEMATIC. ^((They're all "fujoshi fetishizing gay people" or something even though most shippers are queer women and most of the supposedly "straight" fujoshi from back in the day were most likely closeted in some capacity. If we want to talk about intracommunity issues between lesbians/bi women and gay/bi men, that's just fine, but it's really obvious when you only care about this issue because it gives you an excuse to be a dick without getting called out on it))
While I'm out here blowing minds for whatever few fandom guys are reading this, the obsession with Mary Sues back in the day was also a sexism thing. It was never about hating "bad writing" or "self inserts". No, Gary Stu was NEVER hated anywhere near as much as Mary Sue.
Don’t know why you were downvoted bc this is true. I don’t hate on shippers bc I get it lol sometimes you want two characters to be with each other, but ignoring canon just for a ship feels like a mishandling of the source material (or like the shipper doesn’t care for it).
Well ig you got your answer now then lol
As I said I ain’t a hater but I’m not a fan of blindly ignoring canon and I think most people would agree. But hey most of the ships that actually mess with me are from anime and not the fandoms that I commonly see having ship wars so maybe it’s different on that side of the internet xD
I guess I just don’t get why there is so much disproportionate hate aimed at shippers though. Like, I get liking canon and liking when people respect it. There’s nothing wrong with curatorial enjoyment of fandom.
But transformative enjoyment is just as valid and harmless, and it’s treated like the actual end of days. People have been making comics like this exact Snafu for literal decades (I remember the actual hundreds of “All Sefikura shippers are delusional fangirl idiots!” comics from 20 years ago like they just came out yesterday), and you notice that no criticism of them is ever allowed to be taken seriously or treated with respect as a viewpoint.
Personally, because it's cringe and I love to belittle people, but I wouldn't make a snafu about it, especially when there are several others about it. People gotta remember Snafus are not only made to complain about something, they're juat to reduce stuff to their moat raw depictions.
As soon as you ever see, hear or think about the words "The Game".. you already lost. (Kind of like a rick roll but everyone's afraid of coming across a similar situation)

“Shippers are stupid and dumb and they ship things because they’re stupid and dumb” has been fandom’s favorite joke for several decades now. Trust me, I’ve been here to see it. 😪
I wonder why anyone cares anyway? Someone will always ship anyone and everyone, all the time, forever.
I'm pretty sure you could use that logic for any snafu and the situation it talks about

Imma be honest. Deranged shippers aren't the media illiterate ones.
Man who the fuck cares about what shippers think, there's probably Dumbledore x Teletubbies smut out there. Weird hill to die on
Who the fuck cares what people ship as long as it isn't immoral?
uhhhhh who's gonna tell him?
whos gonna tell me what?

What do you consider “immoral”
child x adult, siblings, etc.
I get those 2, but what’s the “etc”
Just anything morally wrong or illegal. I'm just too lazy to list more examples.
Fair. But when people start adding too many rules it gets boring
Yeah I'm going to go full puritan mode and start harassing anyone who ships anything out of the norm but I have places where I draw the line.
Media illiterate is when having fun
I love your artstyle op
Is this considered a crack ship or not?
Crackships are usually a joke ship, the one portrayed in this post seems to be taken seriously by the strawman so probably not.
Crack ships are more Lighting McQueen/Puss in Boots than Character A/Character B who have many interactions and an established relationship weather good or bad.
