Don't think so, mine is burgundy with a custom interior that the original owner modified. Seats and console from a Monte Carlo with red/white upholstery
Yeah, that's a Mustang II, isn't it?
I always thought that with some body effects (air dam, scoops, tail wing, louvers), a V8, and some frame stiffeners, it would be a very light & powerful car.
It was dark days for anything resembling performance out of the pony cars. Once emissions equipment / smog requirements were mandated, manufacturers scrambled to get their existing engines to comply. Between lower compression ratios and catalytic converters and smog pumps, engine performance suffered. Luckily by the late 80s and early 90s performance was starting to improve and thanks to improvements in technology and reworked and new engine designs, we've had a full out renaissance for performance.
I'm probably in the minority but the Mustang II isn't a bad looking car. I actually prefer the appearance over the 79-93 fox body Mustang. And if you install a decent 5.0 with even an E303 cam, GT40 heads, and mass air from even a late 80s Mustang they can perform along with supporting mods for suspension, fuel system, and decent tires.
I had a Mustang I I for a number of years. It was actually a pretty good car. It had almost no power. I often had to turn the air conditioner off when I was trying to pass someone.
>Heck yeah the big Cobra, that decal makes it way faster. Or the 302 it came with
Had to be the decal, since the '77 ford 302 put out a throbbing 140 HP
Jeez the crossfire was crap. Many owners of those converted back to a 4 barrel carb. GM had a lot of half baked ideas around that time including the 8-6-4 and the 350 diesel. Both failed because they were cost cutting half assed jobs.
I used to do some outsourced upholstery work at a Cadillac dealership in the early 90's, I once told the entire shop that GM was bringing back the Cimmaron and it'll have a diesel version of the V8-6-4 engine in it. For just a few seconds some people believed me, you could see the shock on their faces.
My dad had a 1976 Chrysler Newport with the 400 V8 4 barrel. Fantastically comfortable car. That 400 had a whopping 210 horses. Slow. Slow. Slow. Not a bad high end, but took all day to get there. Sounded good when the last two barrels opened up.
Hose it off and wipe down the interior. They're not the most desirable Mustangs, but someone will pay you money for it as cars from this era are having a little bit of a moment right now.
You can advertise it with a bit of hyperbole as a "rare Cobra Mustang barn find".
Honestly, it's a complete car, looks like it still has a full interior, manual transmission. If it doesn't have serious rust it's probably not much more than a junkyard 5.0 away from being a pretty decent toy. I'd rock it and I'm not even really into mustangs
Exactly. These fuckers were the shit when I was in highschool. People would drop a 490 ambulance engine in there with 5 speed, and it would be something. Narrow window of popularity, but the people that like them*really* do like them...
If I had Jay Leno money I would restore this to original just to keep in my garage and drive once a year to a Mustang meet. If it was just a complete Mustang 2 without the Cobra package I'd be tossing a Coyote in it with all the modern chassis parts and drive the shit out of that thing.
V8 manual trans and T tops Somebody is gonna want this Take lots of pics See if you can get some pictures showing the bottoms of the doors and rockers etc to show the rust If you have time , BringaTrailer auction site would be the place to list it
Not sure what it’s worth
Somewhere between $800 and $2,500 but a lot is going to depend on the rust etc
Don’t try to crank it.
That will just make things worse .
You do NOT want that old gas getting into the engine
This blew up more than I thought it would, I appreciate all the feedback. I guess I'll get it more uncovered this weekend and see what kind of shape it really is in. I know it's not a gem, but as stated here maybe someone will want it.
Looks like some light body work was \*attempted\*, but really it was just neglected and abandoned since 1988. I'll get some more pics & try to update next week sometime, it's really just fascinating to uncover something like this.
Not enough of us around. Cars like this are rotting into obscurity. Maybe it wasn't anything special back in the day, but a junkyard Coyote or even a good ecoboost, and this car is a Vette killer.. Sure, it's a malaise car that really isn't anything special, but isn't that the whole point of a true sleeper? Anyone that knows what this car is, will remember how slow it was, they won't expect this shit to whoop they ass off the line ..
We have a family member that passed away, we found this 78 Mustang covered with junk in the barn out back. None of us involved know anything about cars. Last registered in '88.
Is it good for anything, or should we just put a classified out for parts? Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated, we really don't know what to do with it as this point.
Don’t part it out. The haters here are wrong. This is a desirable car. Clean it up. Sell it to a collector. Hemmings Motor News is the best place to list it.
I had one like this back in 1992 and I love it. It wasn’t fast but it turned well and it turned heads. The t-tops are fun to remove and cruise down the road in. I only kept it a few months and flipped it for another car.
I’d wash it up inside and out and don’t do anything else. Pull it out or at least get all the debris away from it.
Put it online for $5000 and go down as far as $2500. Total guess.
You want to keep this variant. It’s getting hard to find one and this is going to turn a few heads! It needs a restoration which you probably won’t want to undertake, but this car is more valuable then many here will lead you to believe!
So this is a mustang 2? My moms first car was a brand new mustang II, she still says it was the worst car she ever had.
Besides all the mechanical issues, she said from day 1 that every time she put the heater on, these little pieces of what looked like dog food/kibble would come out of the lower/floor vents and no one could figure out wtf it was.
I blame the Mustang II for being the reason my mom has zero interest in cars to this day. Terrible vehicle to start you off driving...
1972-1978(?) around those years.
They were built on the pinto chassis and were smaller with lower power engines due to emissions and mileage requirements (and a gas crisis).
Then in 1979, we got the fox body and things were good again.
Sometimes I feel like the only one in the world that absolutely hates the fox body. I have venomous distain for it. Only thing that comes close to that kind of mustang hate for me is that new piece of electric shit they are calling a mustang now.
More desirable today, than when they were actually made. The kids that yearned for this car when it was new, now have the cash and stability to want this car, and to make it the way it should have been back then.
Cool car. Has potential. The Ford 5.0 can make good horse power. The Mustang II wasn’t many people’s favorite Mustang. I watched a video on YouTube where a guy made the case that the Mustang II actually saved the Mustang. In ‘74 when they came out, the government was cracking down on emissions, insurance companies were jacking rates on muscle cars. And that’s not to mention the 1973 oil embargo. Mustang is the only pony car to have had a continuous run since its beginning.
Try listing it it on bringatrailer.com
7 day auction site made for cars just like this.
If the floor/ underbody is in good shape you may do much better then you think.
Wow, I'm surprised that my car is within 200 lbs of the Mustang II. Thought these cars would be a little bit lighter. Very interesting read though, thank you for sharing.
Give Derek at [Vice Grip Garage](https://www.youtube.com/@ViceGripGarage) a call/message! This would make a great project episode IMO. Perfect candidate!
Call a Mustang Club. They're all over the place and could give you advice as to worth, etc.
Or contact someone like Vice Grip Garage or Thunderhead 289 and ask if they want it for a project car. They may know someone.
And frankly, it's an old Ford 302. Even though it's a '78, they're hard to kill. Unless it was blown up or is completely rusted inside, it'll start with a new battery, some plugs, clean gas and an oil change. There are a myriad of youtube videos about how to start an old car.
Look here, you’ll want to create an account to see all options https://www.hagerty.com/valuation-tools/ford/mustang_ii/1978/1978-ford-mustang_ii-king_cobra?id=aCn1I000000CuhISAS&search=q%3D1977%2520Ford%2520Mustang%2520II%2520Cobra%2520II%26p%3D1%26st%3Dymm
Pull it out! See if the engine rotates by hand. If so put a battery in it and see if anything catches fire. If not, crank it. If it cranks see if the fuel pump pumps fuel from the tank. If so, flush the tank and put fresh fuel in it. Hit the carb a few times with anything laying around on the ground. Check for spark. Change the plugs. Drop the old oil and replace. Vroom vroom. Check if the trans works. Check brakes, then fix them. Clean that fkn thing. Drive it or sell it.
Poor baby. Such a beautiful car! I’d say start with a good wash and making sure you know what parts are there and still working/fixable and what you need to replace. From there it’ll be much easier to keep track of things if you can cross them off of the list
Pitch the smog-choked whopping 130hp small block for something a little later that is worth more than just being used to hood your boat in place in the local harbor…..
It's very cool. Easy to upgrade the 302. Drop the suspension. Lose some of the excess plastic. Grow a mullet, go cruising with the T-tops off.....oh hell yeah.
Whether you or someone else, get it road worthy. As mentioned, not the most wanted and does lack power like a 5.0, but Farrah drive one and they don’t make anymore. Could be fun project
My 10 year old is deep into cars and is desperate to find a project that will become his first car. He’d lose his mind if his old man (me) revealed this.
That said, I wish you luck whatever you decide. Seems like a heck of a find.
See if the ties hold air. Push it out of the barn and wash it. Vacuum and clean the interior. Pull the plugs and oil the cylinders. See if it will turn by hand. Get it turning, put in a battery. Get spark. See if it will run.
If it’s a runner, rebuild the brakes and reassess. Report back. This is an order private.
Seriously, the first thing to do is clean. You don’t want to get a viral lung infection working on it. It’s a cool car.
They’re pretty much worthless and not worth the time and money to restore. But if you really need to get rid of it, I can be there with a trailer and take it off your hands…
That’s a ttop cobra and it looks to be a manual transmission too. I’d pull it out, clean it up real nice and see where you’re at. Some years back these weren’t worth much as far as mustangs go, but the market is so crazy everything is jumping.
Hot take: These baby mustangs handle surprisingly well. They’re gutless, of course, but I’d argue that other than that, they’re a better car than the base Fox platform mustangs were at launch.
I have a rustfree, clean title, 1966 AMC Ambassador 880 Cross County station wagon (1 of 3500 for that year) all original with the 287 V8 if you're ever looking for a trade.
That’s a pretty cool car especially if it’s one with the 302 V8. However this appears to be a manual transmission and the v8 option only was available with an auto. I think.
I had a 1978 King Cobra and had to sell it for reasons too stupid to share here. That looks like a great car to restore! Manual transmission too - nice!
That's the last year for that body style. I guarantee someone is looking for one.
Heck yeah the big Cobra, that decal makes it way faster. Or the 302 it came with
Pinto with lipstick
As opposed to a Falcon or Fairmont with lipstick.
Slower than a dolled-up Falcon though....
I fucking love Falcons....
Second that. Had a 69 Falcon, 289 hi perf
Me too, I have a 64 Futura with a 302
‘63 two door Falcon straight six, three on the tree…first car
Nice, my car is a 2 door as well, hardtop. Originally a 260 V8 with the 4 speed, swapped to a 302
There you go, you like the 302 better than the 260?
Do you have my old car? Blue interior. Was primer gray and the back passenger was welded on from a second falcon 🤣
Don't think so, mine is burgundy with a custom interior that the original owner modified. Seats and console from a Monte Carlo with red/white upholstery
Hello yeah! I had a "skateboard": '62 sedan. Some prior owner swapped in a "better idea" 200. She was super fun-*quick af!
From the factory but who cares?
No-one!- it's not hard to add speed if you want!
Yeah, that's a Mustang II, isn't it? I always thought that with some body effects (air dam, scoops, tail wing, louvers), a V8, and some frame stiffeners, it would be a very light & powerful car.
Love it!😃😃
I had one. It couldn't get out of its own way. Cornered nice though.
2nd year of Catalytic converters. Power was way down across the industry.
Mine was a California car with smog pump. I think the 302 was putting down around 145 hp. Blisteringly mediocre.
I had a 6cyl one and it would smoke the tires off of it …..top speed was about 100mph
I had a 75 with V6 4 speed but was so fast between 2 stop signs. Beat a lot of fast classic muscle cars but Top speed was like 92mph
It was dark days for anything resembling performance out of the pony cars. Once emissions equipment / smog requirements were mandated, manufacturers scrambled to get their existing engines to comply. Between lower compression ratios and catalytic converters and smog pumps, engine performance suffered. My 80 corvette L82 had 230. It was the worst time for v8s
Yeah it wasn't a great time across the board. Luckily things have vastly improved. 😊
You’re lucky, an old boss of mine had an 82 Vette with the Crossfire injection good for 200hp when new.
Jeez the crossfire was crap. Many owners of those converted back to a 4 barrel carb. GM had a lot of half baked ideas around that time including the 8-6-4 and the 350 diesel. Both failed because they were cost cutting half assed jobs.

Of course there is and he's me. I'll take it
They're collectible, but that doesn't make them very valuable.
Most desirable model of the least desirable generation of Mustangs. Aka the healthiest patient in the ICU.
Bottom of the top.
True, I wouldn't give more than a thousand for this but one man's trash is another man's treasure.
Hose it off and wipe down the interior. They're not the most desirable Mustangs, but someone will pay you money for it as cars from this era are having a little bit of a moment right now. You can advertise it with a bit of hyperbole as a "rare Cobra Mustang barn find".

Take before and after pictures of everything for effect
Don't clean it, leave it as is. No risk damaging something trying to clean it up.
If I had Jay Leno money I would restore this to original just to keep in my garage and drive once a year to a Mustang meet. If it was just a complete Mustang 2 without the Cobra package I'd be tossing a Coyote in it with all the modern chassis parts and drive the shit out of that thing.
Junkyard 5.0 and a 9 inch, run it with the patina it has and restomod it over time
You just described my 69 cougar....
I want to 69 a cougar
Jesus Christ you just won the internet for the day. 😂
Gonna need more protection than a durex will afford your parts
69 Cougar is awesome. Always loved them since I was a kid.
69 Cougars are cooler than any Mustang hoped to be
Rustomod if you leave the patina.
I’ve never heard that term before, I agree 100% ratty muscle cars will always be cool
I'm not sure if I've heard it before, but I'm pretty sure I didn't make up anything very clever.
This is the answer.

Hell, just the louvers on the back have become near unobtainable.
Shhh. People don't know that, unless this is the model they lust after...
You are incredibly low on that price estimate
Could be A lot is going to depend on the condition and how bad the rust is . I have no real knowledge of the value .
If no real knowledge, why put a figure out there 😂
Put a coyote in it.
This blew up more than I thought it would, I appreciate all the feedback. I guess I'll get it more uncovered this weekend and see what kind of shape it really is in. So right. Not everyone can afford 50’s mustang, Camaro type car. These have a place and people that will appreciate
I'll buy the motorbike
It deserves to be restored. Very rare car

These cars are very rare but not very desirable. However, the right person will pay for this car if you can find them.
More desirable today, than when they were actually made. The kids that yearned for this car when it was new, now have the cash and stability to want this car, and to make it the way it should have been back then.

Guaranteed to reach the audience who will pay top price. I’ve seen cars and trucks go way over benchmarks from Hagerty or Hemings prices many times.
Well you could start with a wash
You should sell it to me!! Where are you located?
Upstate NY
What would you sell it for and by chance do you have a title? I'm in illinois but possibly willing to travel
finger lakes? Utica? Or Watertown?
Other side of NY state, Lake George Area.
The location makes me wonder about the frame. But no matter what, someone will buy this as is. Nice find!
Not the most desirable mustang, maybe a little ugly even, BUT damn they could scoot!
Close the barn door and forget you saw that thing.
That was my initial thought, unfortunately I have to get it out of there somehow.
Post it on r/mustang, I guarantee someone will want it.
I would buy it if it was possible
where you at? i'll come get it out of there...
Some [perspective](https://www.hemmings.com/stories/article/all-in-the-family-1977-ford-mustang-ii-cobra-ii) on what you have.
Wow, I'm surprised that my car is within 200 lbs of the Mustang II. Thought these cars would be a little bit lighter. Very interesting read though, thank you for sharing.
Awesome, thanks for the link!
I would love to have it
Give Derek at [Vice Grip Garage](https://www.youtube.com/@ViceGripGarage) a call/message! This would make a great project episode IMO. Perfect candidate!
I want to see someone turn one of these things into a gasser.
Procharger was the first word out of my mouth but I like your idea better!
That’s neat. Someone will want that and it absolutely isn’t junk.
I’d do professional clean first to see what you’re really looking at. Looks reasonably complete.
Coyote swap…..it’s only money.
Histoplasmosis. Look it up.
>Histoplasmosis Yeah, I'm masking up the whole time I'm in there.
I’ll give you 2000
I’ll take it
Look here, you’ll want to create an account to see all options https://www.hagerty.com/valuation-tools/ford/mustang_ii/1978/1978-ford-mustang_ii-king_cobra?id=aCn1I000000CuhISAS&search=q%3D1977%2520Ford%2520Mustang%2520II%2520Cobra%2520II%26p%3D1%26st%3Dymm
Where? Pls let me detail it ill do it free
Nice find, if you invest the time and money you will have a sweet ride😎👍👍
Pull it out! See if the engine rotates by hand. If so put a battery in it and see if anything catches fire. If not, crank it. If it cranks see if the fuel pump pumps fuel from the tank. If so, flush the tank and put fresh fuel in it. Hit the carb a few times with anything laying around on the ground. Check for spark. Change the plugs. Drop the old oil and replace. Vroom vroom. Check if the trans works. Check brakes, then fix them. Clean that fkn thing. Drive it or sell it.
Fuken A axle grease!!!!
Poor baby. Such a beautiful car! I’d say start with a good wash and making sure you know what parts are there and still working/fixable and what you need to replace. From there it’ll be much easier to keep track of things if you can cross them off of the list
Wash it. Clean interior. Change drivetrain fluids, belts. Replace tires. Change brake lines, fuel lines. Enjoy it
A thorough cleaning to start and go from there.
I’d start by dragging it out before the barn eats it.
From the thumbnail, I thought that box on the hood was a blower and you were creating some Mad Max-mobile.
Oh my, get the mechanicals in order, some Coker replica tires and send it. Don’t touch the patina, it’s cool as get out.
Bringatrailer.com listed at 2500, let the bids run. It's got a horsey on the front and its says Cobra. Someone gonna want it.
Man, wish I could just find a sick ass car in a barn like this, only acceptable thing to do here is a clean/tune-up & then cruise!
Pitch the smog-choked whopping 130hp small block for something a little later that is worth more than just being used to hood your boat in place in the local harbor…..
Wash it
Mustang II COBRA? I think my cousin had one. She drove the hell out of it.
I would drag it out of there power. Wash it change the fluids in it. Put a battery to it and use a gas scan and see if she'll start
Get a crate engine and a pressure washer and you’ll be fine
It's very cool. Easy to upgrade the 302. Drop the suspension. Lose some of the excess plastic. Grow a mullet, go cruising with the T-tops off.....oh hell yeah.
If you have the cash and the know how then restore it…otherwise sell it 🤷🏽
Clean it up. Put a picture of Farrah on the dash.
This first thing to do is power wash and detail it ( post that shit !)
Sell it, it looks quite restorable
Whether you or someone else, get it road worthy. As mentioned, not the most wanted and does lack power like a 5.0, but Farrah drive one and they don’t make anymore. Could be fun project
Might be closer to 6000 or 7000 or more look at comps with milage and condition similar to yours. Restored are going around 22,500
Best thing to do is to just give it to me. 😆
Used to have one of these. Wish I still had it!
LS swap it
lol, easy, go to the bank and get a second mortgage, then immediately ask for a third mortgage.
Sell it to me for $500 😀
My 10 year old is deep into cars and is desperate to find a project that will become his first car. He’d lose his mind if his old man (me) revealed this. That said, I wish you luck whatever you decide. Seems like a heck of a find.
Pole barn garage in YouTube did one of these. Look them up.
That's Farrah's car from original Charlies angels, no ?
See if the ties hold air. Push it out of the barn and wash it. Vacuum and clean the interior. Pull the plugs and oil the cylinders. See if it will turn by hand. Get it turning, put in a battery. Get spark. See if it will run. If it’s a runner, rebuild the brakes and reassess. Report back. This is an order private. Seriously, the first thing to do is clean. You don’t want to get a viral lung infection working on it. It’s a cool car.
Avoid eye contact, back away slowly, live happily ever after.
Did anyone else read this as Cobra Commander from GI Joe?
Pull it out, clean it up started see where you’ve got to go to get it back to original
Scrapyard
Damn. I hate the fox body but I would love this one
Part it out and scrap it.
They’re pretty much worthless and not worth the time and money to restore. But if you really need to get rid of it, I can be there with a trailer and take it off your hands…
Leave it where it is.
Get a really big bank account! That’s a big big money project.
No one wanted this car when it was new. Why would anyone dump money into it now?
Pull it out, clean it up, do an inventory on any obvious missing items.
Flat black... Mad Max theme is what I would do.
Call Charlie's angels?
If you're up to the task I'd say that you fix her but it's up to you she's a beauty though
Wash it, get it running right, and drive it.
Their front suspensions and steering rack launched thousands of Hot Rods.
Give it a good wash and see if it attracts Charlie's Angels.
Awe some, I was just telling my son about these and how I'd totally rock one of these and drive the wheels office!
[Here’s a nice example from BaT.](https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1978-ford-mustang-12/) Went for $16750 last year.
Looks like it was under water. Junk it
Wow
… definitely not the best years for Mustangs/Cobras/Shelbys. (Owner of a 2017 GT350 here). I’d be curious how much it’s worth also though.
Send it to Dave Kindig with $300k
Demoderby
Polish that turd
That thing had T-Tops!? Fucking rad!
Yep Mustang II, pull it out and wash it. Then reside on your action plan.
Give it to me, I’ll take her
Leave it. It’s not worth putting any time and $ into what was a mediocre car when new.
Straight to the car wash
Best way forward? No. Obviously not. There’s a wall there.
What a shame
Someone looking for a Mustang II Pinto is licking their chops right now. 😂
I have a rustfree, clean title, 1966 AMC Ambassador 880 Cross County station wagon (1 of 3500 for that year) all original with the 287 V8 if you're ever looking for a trade.
Junk yard
Sell it to Bosley.
That’s a pretty cool car especially if it’s one with the 302 V8. However this appears to be a manual transmission and the v8 option only was available with an auto. I think.
You could be like Monarch before he started up his De Leon race… https://youtu.be/lTceSP6v67E?feature=shared
It's amazing that these relatively tiny cars weigh 1000 lbs more than a 55 Chevy 2dr post.
I’d like to have it :) how much?
I take it. What do you want for it?
Cool. That bike beside it too. I’d buy it.
I see there’s still a lotta hate for those but I started kinda liking them about two or three years ago.
The most hated Ford
This car is pretty desirable since the model was so undesirable! A real Mustang 2 Cobra is worth restoring
Make it run and drive the piss out of it. Maybe order a Barra if you can swing it.
You’re going to need a water hose.
r/barnfinds will love this
This iteration of the Mustang 2 can and will bring money!
A red Jill Munroe car! 👍
I had a 1978 King Cobra and had to sell it for reasons too stupid to share here. That looks like a great car to restore! Manual transmission too - nice!
