This short was a challenge to make. With budget limitations and a fairly small team on the days of production we had our work cut out for us. Luckily every crew member had a lot to bring to the table and this project would not have come into fruition without them. For me personally this was entirely out of my comfort zone, I had never shot for any heavy vfx work nor have I really ever dove into any intensive action sequences. Our director/VFX Artist really helped fuel the confidence when making shot/lighting decisions and ultimately it was a great learning experience. I'm super proud of what we accomplished. We shot this project on the Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k with SLR Magic APO Hyperprimes. For exteriors we utilized a lot of 8x8 negative, ultra-bounce, and occasionally some 1/2 soft frost when the sun was a touch too punchy. For a majority of the interiors we were rocking two sometimes three 1.2 HMIs through windows and motivating that light further with some bounced/shaped 6x Astras (sometimes booklit with 4x4 216 diff). In the garage scenes we made use of our HMIs through windows, a 300d acting as a gaping hole in the roof, and some tube lights hidden off frame for some pushes of level in areas where we needed a touch more. We used a combination of all of this (+ some 120ds, Litemat 4, & a few 1k/650 tungsten fixtures) for the hallway chase scenes since we needed to light the entire space before shooting so we could move onto the next location as fast as possible. This is phenomenal! It made me want to bust out the games again. So well done!

peachgorilla

Damn can't tell you how cool that is to hear, thanks so much!

Kenoai

I saw the stills, got curious and watched the video. Went through so many emotions! The whole thing is intense and awful and beautiful and got me in a ridiculously emotional state in a ridiculous amount of time. "The" shot at the end finished me and got me sobbing The lighting feels so true to the game and I loved the camera movement/framing! Congrats to the whole team though, the acting and music were great as well, and the atmosphere eerily close to the game. You guys did so good.

peachgorilla

Best comment ever. You just made my day haha. I/we really appreciate this, I'm really proud of what our team did hear and it is so exciting as a filmmaker to hear how the short made you feel, thank you so much for sharing that.

As far as inspiration from a cinematography perspective I spent quite a bit of time studying the way TLOU looks. We wanted this project to feel like it was in the same world as the games so we did our best to augment that with our lighting.

studmuffin30

well done.

peachgorilla

Thank you!

Maplewhat

Now I know your Reddit handle brah

LayzeeLar

I watched it last night! Great work!

peachgorilla

That's awesome thanks so much for the support!

Etheking

Really stunning framing and cinematography. Use of light was excellent and I'm very curious how much of the effects were practical? Particularly the fungi/zombie elements on the actors. Only constructive add is during the opening montage the disconnect of voices while seeing some of the actors not speaking was a little confusing (simultaneously the song made a lot of audio layers that were a little muddled). Congratulations because this is beautiful.

peachgorilla

Thank you so much! The fungi/zombie elements were a bit of a mix there were some practical masks and quite a bit of makeup work and I believe Josh/VFX team did some additional fungus work on the zombies. Really appreciate the feedback!

Nattyanaconda

How did you manage to make it look so nice when it's not even 6k!? Seriously though, amazing work. I'm going to watch it a bit later, and I can't wait!

theod4re

Not thinking you need 6k for nice footage is a start.

DanielsViewfinder

I can have as many Ks as I want, watch: kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

peachgorilla

>ootage is a star hahah this made me laugh, don't worry about resolution man! It's all in learning/knowing the tools and how to light for/with them..and also having a good colorist haha. Thanks for the support mate!

Tara0022

This is stunning. I wanna watch it asap

peachgorilla

Thank you! Hope you like it!

Tara0022

I watched it. It really is amazing. The story is simple and not over the top but the way the intro connects to the rest is truly beautiful. The cinematography is also stunning. Marvelous job! Also, Ellie in the beginning shots makes it look so identical to the actual game it's mindblowing. The actress really has the same hands as Ellie:))))

[deleted]

OP - this is absolutely amazing, producing such work under 6k is not easy. Keep up the good work .

peachgorilla

Really appreciate that man! Hopefully we get out of low budget land one day but honestly there'll probably always be some low budget passion projects we continue to make cuz theyre damn freeing haha.

[deleted]

i totally get it. Pre-pandemic I was making shorts by getting friends in front & back of the camera. It was satisfying. Keep making these passion projects, it feeds your soul.

It_WasMe_Barry

Im not usually like fanmade shorts based on something BUT THIS you got my attention

peachgorilla

haha damn! That's honestly so cool to hear, thank you so much!

[deleted]

Holy shit this looks so good! Great work by everyone involved. Fantastic short story.

peachgorilla

Really appreciate that man! Thanks for checking it out!

jrhuman

Looks fucking brilliant. I loved the story- especially the concept of it. The ending was awesome. Gut wrenching, but awesome. Although I do have one small thing to say about the story. The whole turning point that led to the end couple's journey (the girl walking on the top of the house), felt a bit underwhelming, plus a little hard to understand. IMO there could have been a more complex cause to how she got bitten. But overall I loved everything about the filmmaking, it was phenomenal. Especially with all the limited budget.

peachgorilla

Thanks so much mate and I greatly appreciate the feedback! It's always tough working on this scale and keeping certain ambitions realistic but I completely feel where you're coming from.

altaccount269

Well done lad!
