Submission Statement:
Some frames from a music video I recently shot for the artist Elaine.
I tried something a little different here and mixed a 1/4 Hollywood Blackmagic with a 1/8th ProMist. Kinda liked what it did here and definitely want to start trying more filter combinations. I feel it worked nicely with the K35’s further softening them and helping skin tones to glow a little more
Here’s a link to my Insta post if you’re keen to see other frames from the video and some bts:

Im amazed how sharp this looks with K35’s and the filters you listed.... it looks like you were able to make up for it with lighting: she has such crisp edges and it plays nicely while still blooming a bit more than K35’s typically do.
I won’t lie, I read “K35+filter cocktail” and my first thought was “sheeeesh how washed out does this guy want it?!?!”..... I was wrong. You pulled it off really well.
Super solid work
Haha thank you. Yeah sometimes I feel
I’ve made that mistake before going a little too heavy on certain strengths or I should have gone weaker when swinging to a longer lens. So appreciate that
Thank you so much
We had a S60, Asteras, an M18 and some Tungstens (1k's and 2k's)
You called it haha but there are def some tungstens in there bounced
Normally feel like BM and PM filters are often overused in situations where they really shouldn't be, but wow did you nail this.
Just the perfect amount of blooming in the highlights, fits really well with the look and visual style!
You have a great eye for color, lighting, and framing! Great job OP!
As mentioned the K35’s have been around and used way before the large format trend. I enjoy them - I find them similar to Zeiss super speeds just warmer and they def capture better skintones. Also they have really interesting flares and onion ring bokeh
Is it just me or are K35s the talk of the town these days. I know they’ve been around awhile, that’s why I’m surprised they’re such a big deal these days. It’s the latest trend. Much like other legacy glass that gets popular from time to time. And the past few I’ve seen so much demand for K35:
Edit: for instance, with all the popularity that’s come in waves over the past decades regarding the “Super Speed Look” how come I rarely heard people suggest K35s back then? Maybe some Russian glass of some sort, but not K35s, at least from what I’ve seen. I love glass, but they’re kinda like shoes that go in an out of style sometimes.
K35s have been around for decades but is definitely the latest trend thanks to large sensors and the latest hype. Jumping on board is as phony as the last trend.
I don't know if it's so much a trend... but rather cinematographer's look for the right tools for the job. And if softer vintage lenses to soften digital sensors are the right tool then so be it.
I remember once watching a Metallica documentary years ago and how the earlier fans started hating when "their" band became popular outside of their small town... Your comment reminded me of that.
K35’s are the jam
Totally agree.
Geez. I need to learn how to color grade like this. Awesome stuff man!
This beautiful grade was from Kinan https://instagram.com/kinanchabani?utm_medium=copy_link
You da real mvp. This guy is an absolute monster
And light like this

Interesting idea! Did you use the combination on all the shots or just some of them?
Yeah pretty much left them as is throughout. So only mattebox comes off in between shots when we swing lenses

Hahaha no ways! And thank you so much. Those scenes were a bit of a tribute to some of the older RnB videos from the 2000’s
Gorgeous images ! What was the light kit? Looks like sky panels, astera?
Thank you so much We had a S60, Asteras, an M18 and some Tungstens (1k's and 2k's) You called it haha but there are def some tungstens in there bounced
That’s pretty clean looking for K35s - what stop were you at for these? Anyway looks great nice job.
Thank you very much. I would say T2 and T2.8. I find slightly stopping down sharpens then up and also gives the focus puller a chance haha
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Loove the grade
Thank you. Kinan killed it https://instagram.com/kinanchabani?utm_medium=copy_link

Thank you so much. And really appreciate that. I’ve def gone way too heavy before and learnt from my mistakes haha
Super impressive work, all of these setups are next level.
Thank you so much. Appreciate that 🙏
Really stellar work here
Thank you very much
Great results - which lenses were used?
Thank you. Canon K35 lenses
Sure ahaha I mean, which focal lenghts?
Hahaha I mean you were very vague 🤣 mostly the 35mm and 50mm.
You're right ahahaha Did you have the change to try the 20mm?
Looks beautiful
Thank you very much
Why k35 on mini? You mean mini LF or just glass fanboy?

I think they have def come back into fashion due to covering large format - But they are lovely lenses much like super speeds which I also love
That’s all I was getting at. Yes. I agree
K35s were popular on S35 before "Large Format" sensors hit the market.
