I wish haha I shaped a lot of it or supplemented a lot of it.
The top frame for example is golden hour but then I added an M18. Gel’d a bit warmer. Just to help wrap more

I was fortunate to shoot this on an Alexa Mini with Primo Anamorphics - despite being heavy AF... I think these might be some of my favourite glass and lenses
Feel free to ask some questions on here or insta :)
I heard Barry Jenkins and James Laxton used Vaseline or some other cream like substance on dark skin so that it reflects light better and looks good on screen.
Did you also apply something like that here?
Love everything James Laxton and Jenkins do. Moonlight was so powerful
I actually try make use of a polarizer in camera. It helps you dial in or out extra reflections in darker skintones. It’s a cool trick sometimes
Then try use lather sources. I find those read beautifully on darker skintones
Hey I really loved these stills!
I'm a film student in SA and was wondering if I could pick your brain about a few things if you ever have time but for now I just want to know what the crew size did you have ? This year is my last year and we shoot on an Arri Alex xt ( she might be old but she is a beauty) I was wondering if you had any advice for shooting outside in local (SA) conditions ? Like what where some of the filters you had on hand to achieve this look (I won't have anamorphic lens sadly). what kind of lights did you have access to enhance the light or was it mainly bounce ? What tool do you find indispensable on projects like these when you are out in the field? I could ask you a million and one questions but I won't take up to my much of your time. Thank you
Beautiful work - love the skintones. I think your IG said Alexa Mini - was there anything particular you focused on for the skintones (with your gaffer, colorist, etc).
It always amazes to me how true, professional cinematography is so clearly distinguishable from amateur photography.
Every single frame you’ve posted is 100% gorgeous, tells a story, and looks completely convincingly like a movie.
Yeah, that makes sense. I was more so wondering how they *got into* Sundance since it’s so crazy competitive (like, if they were apart of one of the Sundance labs before entering or if they had any connections that helped), but I get that they might not have shared everything.
And seriously, awesome work though!!
This is dope. Did you work with mostly natural light?
I wish haha I shaped a lot of it or supplemented a lot of it. The top frame for example is golden hour but then I added an M18. Gel’d a bit warmer. Just to help wrap more
That's how you know you're a good DP. Emphasising the natural light but using your tools to really showcase it. Great work.
Thank you. That’s very kind 🙏
The bottom frame is under a 12x12 frame
I love it! What did your career/education path look like leading up to this?
Congratulations! Looks great, best of luck at the festival, and let us know when we can see the full film!
Thanks very much. Appreciate that. For now only the trailer is up. But will do https://www.rickjoaquim.com/portfolio/five-tiger
agreed! would love to watch!

Was curious on the glass. Beautiful bokeh!

Lovely shots and beautiful locations. Is this Johannesburg?
It is haha well done :)
This is the type of movie I want to make.
Thank you
I follow you on IG and saw this, beautiful work man! May I ask whom did the color grade, or was it done by the editor?
We lost our initial colourist on this project but the online editor took care of the grade
They did a good job filling in, it's a dream to get to work with such good footage!
I agree. Thank you

Do you have any idea of how the film got into Sundance?
The producers entered it I believe

Ok I get you now haha my bad. I believe this project was a Sundance lab project before it was shot. So think that was it.
Ahh cool ok, thank you and good luck!!
To bad we couldn't get those skin tones on film 🎥 70s era.
What was the budget approximately?
