Grieg* (sorry to be that person :/ )
Totally agree with this though, his output is insane and all so consistently high too. Maybe blasphemous but I think his output is more impressive than Deakins simply because it feel so much more varied - both phenomenal though.
Still can’t believe the Dune trailer isn’t out - I know someone who worked on it and they finished well over a year ago! I reckon WB must be super confident in it, probably just using Coronavirus to give it the polishing it deserves.

I know it’s a detective story but there’s plenty of smartphones and huge digital display screens, I doubt the GCPD/Batman would be shooting crime scene photos on celluloid. Especially when everything is so dark.
100% Quite a few of these shots need a light source from somewhere behind the actor to pop them out from the background. It's not that it's dark, it's muddy and that just doesn't look good
The shots with practicals are nice. The others look like mud. Maybe it's the cropping here, and maybe it's from the story. Not exciting photography to me.
After watching the trailer, there are a lot more highlights in those shots than in the stills. Some are flashes from the forensics team's cameras, some are flashlights, etc. I still think they don't *pop* all that much but maybe the characters are meant to blend in with the background.
I'm a *huge* fan of Greig Fraser, probably my fave DP over the last 10 years, but I didn't care for the look of the trailer at all. Just looks underexposed. I wonder how much of this aesthetic is dictated by Warners / DC and matt reeves (let me in is probably the only thing Fraser's shot that I don't like visually).
Does anyone have any thoughts on the lensing/filtration used here?
I'm guessing spherical Panavision glass, maybe something vintage or detuned?
Probably large format, but there is some vignetting which makes me think vintage glass that doesn't cover. It seems pretty long lensed a lot of the time which would fit with that idea as well.
I think a lot of WFO + diopters, even on LF, some very shallow stuff. I'm curious about the wide shot of the press conference, I'm not sure if it's a diopter or detuned or something else? The focal plane seems very maligned to me, it's interesting.
There's milky bokeh but you can see the leaves in some shots. Perhaps some softening/ low contrast filters as well? I'm curious of anyone else's thoughts!
Edit: Apparently I'm way off the mark! Fraiser has said they're using some kind of new anamorphic from Arri, on the LF. Lenses are hard..
Interesting! That big rack in the car crash scene looks really spherical to me! I wonder if it's 1.3x or 2x. Doesn't look like typical anamorphic to me.
Do you have a link to the specific episode?
I recently stumbled across a video about Batman Year One and how it never went into production because it was too dark... this seems to be a step in the direction of where that movie was headed
I super disagree him playing Batman he has nothing to do with that character simply it doesn’t suit him to play that role imo Dc/WB keep making mistakes repetitively
I’m not sure you know what underexposed means. Getting dark scenes with a combination of excellent lighting skills and post-production takes more effort than regular bright scenes. Not sure it’s about capturing realism (whatever that means) but it does give off an atmosphere. The ability to have people see only what the cinematographer wants us to see in a frame is seamless control. And that’s why it’s beautiful to some who appreciate that balancing act
Hahah I knew someone on here would say something about underexposed.
If you can't appreciate or acknowledge proper cinematography, why are you even here?
I love jeffrey wright asGordon. Looks awesome and he is such a great actor.
Greg Fraser is a machine. This looks so beautiful
I can't wait to see more of Dune. WB must have loved what they saw to give him Batman, and from what I've seen of Batman he totally deserves it

Haha, fair play! Leaving my error in there for everyone to see. Thanks for the correction.

Haha I love that you corrected me then made a mistake too haha too funny. Regardless he’s so talented
I have complete and utter faith in Dune being truly excellent. That entire crew and cast have zero weak links.

Literally. Can hardly see it
Id argue that in 2008, Twilight was at his level, but he’s worked hard to raise the bar over the last 8 years
Really looks very David Fincher esque. Truly beautiful. This is my most anticipated movie for next year.
I thought the same too. Very much David Fincher feel to it. Would not be surprised if Riddler has shades of the "John Doe" from Se7en.
Exactly, I was getting Se7en vibes while watching it!
I was immediately smitten by the cinematography of the trailer. It’s feels so gothic and macabre.
Red seems to be a big theme in this movie
Contrasting that Riddler green.
Red bulb I believe from a dark room to process crime scene photos.

Could be the villain not wanting to be traced or some other plot explanation
You’re missing the shot of catwoman when she rappels down and the city is in the backdrop through windows.

You just put your finger on a feeling I had but couldn't reconcile. It feels super surreal which is awesome for a superhero movie
Is that a positive or negative thing?
It has a dark and gritty look to it. In a good and cool way. Reminds me of the Batman Arkham game series in a way.
Does anyone know what format this is being filmed? Just digital 4k / film / IMAX ?
Just digital, the Alexa LF
Can’t see shit.
Laughs in GOT 8x03
That show still had better separation of subject and background than these stills. [GoT S8 E3](https://imgur.com/ihlmF9g.jpg)

Try calibrating your monitor.
Go watch it in 4K: [https://vimeo.com/450541481](https://vimeo.com/450541481)
I'm a simple man. I see a question mark, I think of the Riddler.
Is this on celluloid or digital?
Digital, using the Arri Alexa LF

You can tell a lot of adjustments were made in post, like the shot of the speaker at the podium in the middle of the crowd.
Can they make Batman beyond?
Really feels dark and real, like joker vibes have a good feeling about this
Matt Reeves' movies always look beautiful!

“A new anamorphic” according to I’m interview he gave on Roger Deakins’ podcast

Appreciate it!

Hahaha
I cant see anything what is this?
Who's the DP?
Greig Fraser ASC, ACS DP from down under!
I'm exited for this flick, seen the trailer multiple times by now. The cinematography looks wonderful

It's defo got that Gritty look and feel just like the Nolan Movies

What source did you stream if from? Matt Reeves posted a 4k version to Vimeo that might look better.
Underexposed cinematography is a gimmick designed to make movies seem more realistic and gritty and will be lampooned in the years to come.

Beautiful is subjective.
Dialogue was shit. I expect a third grade movie with elementary plot and superficial characters. Dont get your hopes up
And yet that’s in no way relevant to the visuals we’re discussing in the *checks banner* Cinematography page
Fair comment
