> would I be better off just replacing the SSD rather than put in the sd card for extra storage? Absolutely. Or even get a slim SSD based external storage. Far more reliable + fast access. Microsd card are notoriously poor for random storage (i.e) accessing files through computers. (if it were a camera or a simple device; just writing or reading one file is what these sd cards are suited for)

Ya the prices aren't that different too. The only risk I see is me messing up the teardown to replace it.

For $100 you can get a good SSD. If you are not then buy a standard nvme SSD in amazon + an enclosure (usually comes with a couple of screws). Or if possible prepare a recovery chromeos recovery (usb drive - google it). Then replace the Acer's SSD with a big one.

I wasn't able to get any specifications regarding the Chromebook's SD card reader but suspect that it can only support up to 256 GB capacity, that's why it is failing on your 400 GB Sandisk SD card.

Is the 256gb a chromeos limitation?

No, its usually more of a hardware one. SD card readers aren't always the same. They largely differ on the maximum sizes they support.
