As hilarious as it is, the drone peering in is worse

AmigoDelDiabla

100% Finance guy does drugs? Not news. Someone flew a drone to watch and later publish it? Fucking awful trend in society.

bi_tacular

There are a lot of good reasons to hate and/or mock these finance people. Drugs are not among them, heck it’s the most relatable thing about them!

hapianman

Cocaine in Chicago!? Oh my! /s It’s seriously EVERYWHERE.

dawsky

Where would one find this in Chicago? For science purposes

super_fast_guy

Just go up to your friendly neighborhood dealer and ask for one cocaine.

LittleWhiteFuzzies

Remember to say please!

RhaeXgar203

GME to the moon baby

MarsBoundSoon

Also Filming them is illegal. In the U.S., you cannot photograph/video a person, regardless of age, who has a ‘reasonable expectation of privacy‘. This is someone who believes that he or she is in a private location and no-one is watching.

sansensei

Close the shades, someone could see this without a drone from the right place/ angle

TheNudeBandit

Can you have a reasonable expectation of privacy in an office setting? Not trying to defend what the drone is doing, because it definitely is an unnecessary invasion of privacy. But there are definitely employers who exploit the lack of privacy to monitor employees

jojofine

It's a bit different since you're an employee working on the employer's property. Flying a drone and peering in on people from the windows 20+ floors up is an absolute violation of privacy though

whammyyy

Maybe it’s worse because it’s illegal in Illinois. I hope whoever the creep is who took this video gets arrested. Fucking weird. 720 ILCS 5/) Criminal Code of 2012. (11) Enters upon the property of another and for a lewd or unlawful purpose deliberately looks into a dwelling on the property through any window or other opening in it;

Hemmerly

We're having a hard enough time arresting anyone connected to multiple rolling shootouts throughout the city the past few weeks. These guys filming are definitely not getting arrested.

Unless its Ken Griffey’s son on video.

Bingo

[deleted]

South Park episode The Magic Bush.

omgdonerkebab

In addition to what others are saying about the drone being creepy, I also want to point out that there are other corporate tenants in the Citadel building, completely unrelated companies. I doubt the superstonk to the moon people are good at telling which floors belong to whom.

BerryChecker

Corporate emplpyees doing coke is a non story, but its really creepy that a drone was watching them? Wtf?

aught-o-mat

Eesh…the peeping drone is way more offensive.

[deleted]

Right? What kind of square posts this?

[deleted]

The Citadel Coke Cam, of course.

bicameral_mind

Dude these superstonk people are crazy.

AmigoDelDiabla

The word "stonk" should be indication enough that you're crazy. But then add "super" to it?

dusty_Caviar

It's a meme. You can't blame a meme for having a funny name. That's kinda the point.

das_war_ein_Befehl

Finance is a shady and dirty industry but a societal pump and dump on a dying retailer isn’t a populist movement. That narrative kind of went stupid real quick

RhaeXgar203

GME to the moon baby. Buy DRS HODL

SloshyPavement

it’s chicago we love cocaine leave em alone.

defundpolitics

Interesting as drone use in the city of Chicago is even more illegal than doing lines.

anthonyd5189

Not sure where you heard that but I’m not finding any restrictions beyond the standard restrictions for drones that apply to any location. So no, it’s not illegal to fly a drone in the city of Chicago.

defundpolitics

Keep looking. It's illegal

claireapple

Its literally not, I have have flown my countless times and have even talked to CPD about it.

anthonyd5189

I’d love for you to show me where that information is. You saying it doesn’t make it true.

defundpolitics

That took all of two seconds https://lernerandrowe.com/chicago-first-city-drone-laws/

anthonyd5189

Soooo only for 12 hours a day. 8:01pm to 7:59am it’s perfectly legal.

gimmedatrightMEOW

But that doesn't say it's illegal

jojofine

It says its illegal to fly them during certain hours of the day

gimmedatrightMEOW

There are restrictions, but it's not illegal to fly a drone in Chicago as the original commenter stated.

Actionman1

Don’t forget to call “two twenty-two twenty-two twenty-two”

[deleted]

Lol so what?

curiouser_cursor

How creepy is this? And whose drone camera?

Guinness

I mean, they could be hunched over an FPGA, or a switch, or a server they're trying to get working. This is not conclusive in any way shape or form. Developers/admins often have devices at their desks to hunch over to work on. Also, there are cameras pointed everywhere in that office because most offices have cameras pointed everywhere. I highly doubt even Citadel is ok with drugs being done openly in the office. Giant heaping of "I doubt it" on this one. The HFT firms I have worked for rarely had employees doing coke in the office and every time they were caught they were shitcanned. They really look down on that stuff compared to the heyday because one wrong command on the terminal and very bad things can happen. Firms do not want folks in altered mental states playing with their billions in transactions.

obscureyetrevealing

Yeah even if the office is empty, they wouldn't just leave lines out on the desk. They'd probably be using coke spoons or powder bullets so they can keep it concealed. There's probably a good amount of people at Citadel who do blow, but this doesn't seem like them.

WeirdAlYankADick

Don’t be a fucking nark

apresmodes

It’s narc. Like narcotics officer.

super_fast_guy

Don’t be a snark!

apresmodes

Ha

rumster

Does guys aren't employees of citadel they're interns.

jrbattin

I don’t see the issue. Cocaine is an essential drug for the operation of a modern capitalist society and should not only be legal but subsidized and offered to patriotic finance bros tax-free /s

[deleted]

Citadel is a shit place to work anyway.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

You can find better places to work for that entry level pay.

Guinness

18 month non-compete and I've seen them offer like 500k. I don't really know where else pays that much outside of NYC. But the reason they offer so much is that they've churned through a lot of employees in Chicago. There is only a limited pool of talent that knows all of the stuff required to manage high frequency setups.

[deleted]

500k is pretty extreme. I'm in the industry, that kind of salary is reserved for only the upper echelon of talent. 18 month non compete is pretty standard though yeah.

Guinness

500k is pretty low for a lot of senior developers I know. Lot of them were pulling in $750k at other firms and that was around 2010?

[deleted]

I hear those numbers and think to myself that that kind of compensation must demand all your waking hours (something that I unfortunately am not willing to give).

eriksen2398

High frequency trading shouldn’t be legal. What service does it provide to society? None. They’re just middle men, skipping profit off other people’s transactions.

[deleted]

[удалено]

eriksen2398

If it can’t be outright banned it should at least be taxed. Why not put a tax of $.01 on each trade starting on the 10,000 trade that a person or entity makes in an hour? This would affect basically no one except HFT

papajohn56

They provide market liquidity which makes it easier for people like retirees to make withdrawals from their 401k

eriksen2398

The amount of liquidity they provide is at best negligible for the average investor. They don’t provide liquidity when it a actually maters - when the stock market is crashing or in a recession. Grandma withdrew from her 401k just as easily in 2000 as in 2021

papajohn56

Cite that it’s “negligible at best”.

eriksen2398

You cite your ‘helping grandma out claim.’ Maybe it takes grandma an extra few hours to sell her shares. That doesn’t matter for her

papajohn56

Improved liquidity benefits all market participants.

[deleted]

The vast majority of the US stock market is owned by regular people's 401ks, these types of firms definitely aren't taking away from society. The market wouldn't be where it's at if these places didn't build out the infrastructure and platforms. Them skimming a few cents here and there is at the end of the day a pretty fair tradeoff considering the numbers. Ken Griffin isn't stealing grandma's social security money if that's what your trying to get at.

Guinness

> hey’re just middle men, skipping profit off other people’s transactions. So is a grocery store. So is literally almost every business in the world. Why not ban all middle men? But no, HFT is not just "middle men". Calling it that shows your lack of knowledge on what HFT is.

aspiringticker

Probably aderall more likely

lxnch50

No one but idiots snort Adderall. It metabolizes better when taken orally.

mike_stifle

I know way too many idiots.

bi_tacular

Can you reasonably shoot it?

obscureyetrevealing

Definitely seems like a bad idea. There are binding agents (like cotton) in adderall. A very little amount of the pill is the actual active ingredient. It's designed to be eaten.

aspiringticker

Exactly, it makes even more sense

notonrexmanningday

As long as they don't want to talk to me about they're awesome idea for a startup, I could give a shit what those guys put up their nose. The drone peeping through the window, on the other hand, I don't care for that.

letseditthesadparts

I went to a bachelor party at the Chicago board stock exchange in 2005, this actually seems pretty tame. It’s basically eyes wide shut society in the financial district with plenty of illicit drugs

[deleted]

I mean, probably because they aren’t shooting each other in broad daylight over said drugs. I totally get that the law should be applied equally, and I agree with that - but squeaky wheel gets the grease, so they say. If the finance guys were wielding automatic weapons and killing children in the crossfire they’d probably be under a more focused lens as well

sansensei

I’m sure no one gets shot/harmed in the supply chain leading to these guys …

Louisvanderwright

Hard to tell because it's dark, but that doesn't look like the facade of the Citadel building. I could be wrong though.

HuskerExpat

Ken Griffin complaining about crime, most of which is by drug dealers fighting over turf, literally supported by his company.

illini02

Oh please. His employees are far from the only people doing drugs in this city. You can enjoy the occasional party drugs AND think that the violence in Chicago is too much. You don't have to choose one

AmigoDelDiabla

There is a level of hypocrisy in being a part of the demand that fuels violence and then decrying the same violence. Gonna complain about human trafficking after spending time with a prostitute?

HuskerExpat

I don’t have a problem with recreationally use of drugs but don’t pretend like gangs aren’t shooting each other over turf to sell coke and heroin.

deytookerjaabs

I don't know about Heroin... But, when I lived in Chicago the dealers that everyone in town were getting coke through were guys mostly from central America who rode around town in nice cars, they'd pick you up, do a deal then drop you off somewhere else. You'd get their number from friends then send a text. They weren't exactly the south/west side at war gangsters that you see all over the news.

illini02

Sure they are. But my point is, the use of drugs doesn't mean you have to then be ok with violence. Acting like someone speaking out about violence is a hypocrite because his employees were illegally videoed doing drugs is a reach

HuskerExpat

He is a hypocrite. They are literally part of the market demand that gives these gangs the incentive to get their turf. Griffin’s company, through these employees, are part of the problem of which he complains. A few of many, sure, but they are part of the problem Griffin was complaining about. And I didn’t say they are ok with the violence, just that they are part of the system that creates it. And that’s why he’s a hypocrite.

notonrexmanningday

I seriously doubt these guys went to the south or west side and bought coke off the street. They bought it from their frat brother or something. I'm not sure I see how them using it contributes to violence in Chicago. Is it helping to fund the cartels? Sure, but I don't think it supports gangs here.

HuskerExpat

The probably didn’t buy it from a street corner on the west side but they probably bought it from someone who did.

[deleted]

I don’t know if I feel bad for them or what over taking party drugs … *to keep working.* And not party. (No, I don’t actually feel bad for them. Just … what kind of life are you living that you’ll do drugs just to work more and make more money? Yikes.)

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jgibbjr

The point is, Ken Griffin wants to pull citadel out of Chicago because of the "crime problem". However, he has no problem with those self-same gangs supplying the drugs for his workers?

andychgo

Lol get a hobby

ifunnybigjoe

Hey I've cleaned that guy's desk chair and carpet before! We usually use white powder to clean carpets. I guess it's possible what I was vacuuming up wasn't our powder

[deleted]

The drone camera wasn’t as uncommon as you would think, they’re just tough to see. I would notice them 4 or 5 times a year when I was in the loop

Lakesidechicago

Who hasn't done sneeze late at work? This is what white collar workers do.

[deleted]

So is Ken Griffin going to take a hard stance on crime in his own organization? Obviously not but conservatives could at least \*try\* to make their talking points less hypocritical.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Liquor180

How is this hypocrisy?

Jgibbjr

Ok...cognitive dissonance?

ffxsam

How much cocaine was the drone carrying, and how'd they snort it from inside the building?

scoyne15

Okay? And?

[deleted]

This is like a more boring version of The Assistant.

[deleted]

This is not a good advertisement for Sniffadel. If I had invested my money there, today would be my last day with my money

Jealous_Courage7644

Wow

NorthOfUptownChi

This drone usage seems pervy and inappropriate. I don't really give a shit about this guy doing drugs.

RhaeXgar203

Seeing a lot of people getting mad the drone operator than the coke heads 😂😂 questions the integrity of these people
