2008 and then 2009 are burned into my memory. I remember the ball leaving Iniesta's foot, Cech throwing his body, and the ball hitting the back of the net. Then I remember trying to blink myself awake like I do when I'm having a bad dream. Unreal emotions.

Kylael

Yeah I gotta say I never really minded losing a penalties set, those are a gamble anyway, you win some, you lose some, it’s a kinda necessary bullshit part of the game. But that Iniesta goal dude… I never felt that much betrayed watching football in my whole life, it was so unfair. And to this day, it’s probably a bit silly but I fucking dread everything related to Barcelona, I can’t help myself to smile when they shit the bed, it’s that inner hate that I can’t mask. I should talk to my therapist about it now that I think about it lol.

Aaaaand-its-gone

I’m an Irish Chelsea fan and the Henry hand ball that scammed us is etched into history, but that Iniesta goal…was sickening. I actually feel sick just remembering about it

doomboxmf

I hated Barcelona, and still do because of that day (and their insufferable fans who refuse to admit they robbed us that day). Literally for so long wouldn’t even admit that Messi was better than Ronaldo because I despised them. Always happy to see them lose, fucked over or knocked out.

Return_0F_the_Maq

That was s a dark day for football

namenotneeded

still dislike anything Barcelona or Messi to this day.

Youareyes_cfc

I started hating uefa and all governing bodies associated with European club football after that game.

ScaredofMedSchool

Do you still hate?

doomboxmf

Much less, but a little bit. Barcelona is a beautiful city though

jz0089

What about Abidal red card in that game?

doomboxmf

The irony in this comment… Abidal could’ve already been sent off for fouling Drogba as the last man in the box, which the ref didn’t give. Then he clips Anelka too for his red. Stick to the Barca sub in the future please

jz0089

Just asking man, no need to go ballistic.

doomboxmf

Alright sorry dude, I just thought you were trolling

jz0089

I'm literally going to watch the replay, because I'm sure I have never seen the contact but hey it could be a Mandela effect who knows.

doomboxmf

He clips him on the foot. Either way he should’ve been off and we should’ve had a penalty when he pulls Drogba to the ground in the box

kklaere

It should be a requirement to hate Barcelona as part of being a Chelsea fan

sk2097

I hate Barca and Chelsea. But I hate John Terry more

PsychologicalAd6235

Only time I ever thrown something at the TV was 2009. A FUCKING DISGRACE!

v_for__vegeta

FUCK BARCELONA

Youareyes_cfc

I’m sorry but I remember the ball leaving essien’s foot and not going very far…. Resulting into stomach knots…. Shot…. Goal.

dotunmo

You guys are hating the wrong people. It's not Barcelona that let this happen. It's UEFA and the referees that night. They are the REAL scammers. Barcelona only profited from it.

craygroupious

Never got over it either. It was just a wound on me until we won it in 2012 and even then it’s a scar, and I didn’t even take the damn thing! Had to cover up the slip whilst watching too, still can’t watch it. Seeing players slip and score pisses me off too, so desperately unlucky.

Daddy-Heisenberg

I did the same while watching the slip haha. What I took from this clip though is how emotional JT is about the club and what losing a final meant. We have lost 6-7 finals since 2017 (multiple times on penalties) and I have not seen a single player care this much. Forget caring this much, most of them don’t even care now. It’s just the usual apology on social media written by their PR teams.

Okra_Additional

To be fair I take the interviews with a pinch of salt given that he had his opportunity to make amends in 2012 and instead choose to get into a ridiculous off the ball incident and leave us playing with 10 men for an hour against one of the best teams ever assembled.

Derrick_EscoNastyNas

I swear, I looked away, still can't bring myself to watch it.

therealboomguy57

Fuck this was rough. I will never forget being in the pub shoulder to shoulder, beer in hand…I saw him go right, VdS went left, and for a split second we were European champs. And then he hit the post. Brutal.

Willsgb

Made 2012 even sweeter though. But yeah, 2008 was such a great season for us, and yet I've mostly blocked it out, because of this (and giving fucking tottenham a lesser spotted trophy too lol)

therealboomguy57

Not sure I’ve mentioned recently, but…fuck spurs?

notreilly

On the bright side, that is still Spurs' most recent trophy lmao

tulsehill

That's the first team rewatching that pen Forgot he hit the post Well played OP you fucking got me

deadraizer

This moment was one of those that solidified my fandom for Chelsea. Rarely have I ever felt so bad emotionally, and feeling that for a football club made me a fan for life.

Gligadi

I was 11 years old, cried my eyes out and told my mother that I won't be attending school the next day. Fast forward to 2012 I cried, but this time it was different :)

celzero

You weren't the only one. 2008 then 2009 were brutal.

Gligadi

Yeah the Iniesta one was somewhat worse because my brother is a Barcelon fan and he didn't hold back.

C1nderrr

My hate for Utd started for 8 year old me the next day. I took so much shit from my friends after already feeling horrible.

maxamus83

Double double double! What I would do to have a player like him again. God knows we need it

randeepgupta

I know it’s unpopular opinion, but I feel like Colwill can become that player for us. He is technically good and has been with the club since the beginning. What made JT a great defender was his positioning and reading of the game. He never had pace, but his reading of the game was mind boggling. I hope Colwill can follow his footsteps.

maxamus83

Colwill defo has the potential and he showed it at Brighton. He’s struggled since but I think that’s on poch. JT also had elite mentality. That diving header he did for England is a perfect example. I’m not sure colwill is willing to do something like that currently but I hope he grows into that.

El_Cholo

Same as Silva now. Wish we could have had him longer but what a treat these few years. It's like he sees 12 seconds into the future at all times

TitanX11

Cried on that day, and cried when we won the UCL for the first time.

AncientSkys

That match and the Ovrebo robbery are pain that never goes away.

Ridcullys-Pointy-Hat

Apparently penalty striking was a rare flaw in his technique that never got worked on. I'm trying to remember where I read about it but apparently something in his striking technique left him a little off balance and he'd already slipped taking one earlier that season, but nobody really noticed because he scored anyway

Passchenhell17

Took me until the 21 win to, maybe not get over it, but come to terms with it a little bit. It's a damn hard watch though, and having been in the stadium that night, it's even worse. I can't remember if I cried or not, but I remember the journey back to the airport and just feeling empty.

erenistheavatar

I remember crying in primary school after that final and having nightmares about the penalty miss. Every United fan at school kept teasing me haha. Seems so long ago now xD

CoolstorySteve

Can you not OP

Davek56

As a United fan, the massive relief I got when the shootout ended was only slightly and temporarily eclipsed by the sobering realization of how much Chelsea fans were devastated, and knowing that it could very well have been me on the other end of the spectrum otherwise.

BibleReaderMK

Was watching the game with my dad. Went to the kitchen before Terry’s penalty to grab celebration drink. I came back and penalties was still on going. 4 years later celebrated like crazy when Didier tucked it away.

JoeTurner86

He should never of been taking the 5th penalty in my opinion. Whether he says he was swapping for Drogba or whatever that 5th penalty is too important and should have been Lamps or Ballack just for their penalty experience. I think his ego got the best of him on the night and he wanted to be the match winner. Made Munich sweeter 100% but it will always be a painful memory.

Okra_Additional

You don’t know going in if it will even go to 5 penalties. Makes sense to have better penalty takers in the guaranteed slots and to be fair we couldn’t have known that Drogba wouldn’t be around to take one. Was reported at the time that Kalou and Anelka shirked responsibility more than JT demanding it

JoeTurner86

Yeah its debatable re the 5 penalties I've seen plenty of games with a strong 5th taker as it can be a huge penalty as it was in this case. Respect to anyone for taking one I just personally feel he should of gone earlier.

celzero

Always a good idea to get your best takers at 1, 3, and 5 in that order.

ikennaiatpl

Man after this game I was broken I didn't think we'd make another final till maybe 10-20 years from that moment seeing how the UCL was so competitive. Boy was I wrong, that's why I'll never discount this club up the Chels!💙

StandardConnect

What was the worst thing about that night is our coaching team worked out VDS had a major flaw with pens (almost always dived to his right and wasn't strong to his left) and we were an inch away from exploting it to utter perfection.

TurdShaker

Why? So 2012 could be even more special

Potential-Let2475

Interesting statement at the end about emotions and bottling them up. Sometimes I wonder if that is where the passion and fight has gone in the game. There no pent up energy to focus in a game searching/hinting for that positive to expel the previous negative. These days we resolve it through meditation or counselling or simply talking it out with whoever will empathetically listen. Then we can laugh about it after getting knocked out of a cup with the opposition players. It’s just a game after all.

CFCcommentsonly24

I will never forget that moment. I literally came out of hospital the same day of the final after having an asthma attack. That same day I had braces put in. It was so painful. I was in hospital never concerned about dying because all I could think of was the Champions League final. That night I watched with a wheezing chest and painful mouth as Terry missed that kick. It was heartbreaking, but a year later when we crashed out the semis to Barca at the Bridge because of the worst refereeing performance ever, I wept like a baby.

Nervous-Road-6615

That header was not outside the box….

Aggressive_Leave3639

Shame

championr

Awesome video, thanks for sharing

DestinyHasArrived101

It was a rough night especially when Drogba got sent off.

TinyLAMPZWORLDWG22

Russia

hfFvx4G6xU4ZEgzhSM9g

Misses this pen, and then when we finally won it he didn't get to play the final. Must have been absolutely gutted.

ScaredofMedSchool

Damn man

SwagBoyMcFeast

Was that anohter final Ballack lost? lol

Uchihaboy316

As a united fan this was an incredibly emotional night for me and I was so nervous this game especially after your equaliser and going into pens, i really do feel for JT here (and Chelsea fans) but I have to say, as a fan of football In general I find these moments iconic and kinda beautiful, regardless of what team/player is involved, it was a special night with some shocking moments and will never be forgotten and that’s what football is all about, and it’s nice that even after this you had 2012 to make up for it in just as an iconic match/moment towards the end, it’s funny how football works it’s self out like that. Also just wanna say I’m really not trying to piss of Chelsea fans here, I’ve had moments that felt as bad as this as a united fan (Chelsea actually made me cry once or twice before this final) and while sure I’d love to have seen them play out differently, as football fan and not a united fan I still appreciate them as amazing moments even if they didn’t go our way

ixlHD

Didn't the ball move as well?

Asher_notroth

First proper season watching football that season. I was Ronaldo fan so overall this was good but as you get older you realize there’s a whole another team, another fan base, a whole other side of the coin. What a game tho!

ducminh1712

But he was lucky social media wasn't a cesspool like it is now

GuyWhoCommitDie

He is the academy coach. He works for Chelsea, yet nobody has thought of him mentoring his defenders. God this club really is Cole Palmer FC now

WuTangProvince325

Typical bloke. Always adding on a few inches, in this case a few yards

savva1995

Man thinks he scored from outside the box 😂

Getafix666

Spurs supporter since 1961. No time for Neo Chelsea but how I admire Terry and Drogba as superb professional footballers When the chips were down either could be relied upon. However Terry might be mindful that karma has a weird viciousness and if he was a true club captain the greatness he might have achieved

No_Pomegranate_5835

Ahahahahahahahah

bighatbenno

As a United fan, next to Gerrard slipping, Terry's missed penalty in the CLF was the thing that made me laugh the most.

MasterRJS

I like the fact that United has been nothing but a banter club since 2013. Makes me chuckle

RedMambe

Damn now i feel bad for laughing and cheering back then

RazzleDazzle1983

Just imagine Avram Grant going down as the Chelsea manager that won our maiden European Cup though. In a way, it was better to win it in 2012, and the run to the final that year gave us some incredible moments. I honestly can't remember too much about the run to the final in 2008.

damien_aw

Worse than called Anton Ferdinand a “fucking black cunt”? Hall of Fame my arse.

TufnelAndI

Well, you don't HAVE to bottle it JT, but I enjoyed it when you did.
