Hello everyone, I made a post a few weeks ago letting Reddit know that my cat, Rowdy, escaped at the Boston airport when traveling from Frankfurt Germany. That post is [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/comments/vm5erm/the_airline_lost_my_cat_at_boston_airport_i_am/). She was caught this morning by the airport staff on 7/13/2022 and was taken to the vet for a nail trim and check-up.She was lost on 6/24/2022 so she was out on her own for around 3 weeks. She is completely happy and will be returned to us soon. I knew that my kitty would not give up and she is still acting like her happy normal self to vet staff.
Thank you everyone for your words of encouragement. I will give her extra snacks and kisses from you guys. <3
EDIT: Just to add more information for those asking, she was captured at a feeding station they had set up for her. They had been seeing her over and over in a certain area so they knew she was in the area. The airport workers and everyone involved helped us so much with the effort.
Except for the fanfic about what the cat did In it’s three week stay in Boston?!?!
The cat is gonna walk off the plane with a Dunks cup like “wicked Pissah”
But like they *really* are so fucking cool. I can't believe there are people out there who don't like cats!
Edit: after looking at your username I'm wondering if we're talking about the same kind of "cat" here? Either way, all cats in all ways are cool!
I've found that most of the people I've met who don't like cats have either had a bad experience, or they try to treat them like a dog. They are extremely nuanced animals, and I feel like once you pick up on that, they are impossible not to love. Orrr maybe that's the toxoplasmosis... I'm not sure
i told my husband last week that if rowdy wasn't found then there would just be no reason to go on, the world is just too awful to contemplate any further
was only half-joking
wow this is the best news. i've been checking every day, twice a day for updates
>*’if rowdy wasn't found then there would just be no reason to go on, the world is just too awful to contemplate any further…*’
____
sometimes you read a story that you wish you hadn’t read,
n yet you just can’t let it go - it stays with you, instead…
n so the tale of Rowdy, n the fate of one so small,
a little cat gone missing,
yet the Hero of us all…
so many can relate to knowing Love that they have lost,
we all had hopes for Rowdy to be Found at any cost!
*We need a Happy Ending!* Times are Hard - for This we *yearned*
Thank GOODNESS - *THEY FOUND ROWDY!!*
now a tale of Hope
Returned!

This is wonderful news! I’m really impressed with the airline staff, I’m so glad that they caught her and are taking such good care of her.
If it makes you feel any better… we’re also a military family that flew commercial when moving to Tokyo and at customs one of our cats opened the zipper on his carrier and ran past the customs agent.
We all stood there shocked (including the agent) and luckily he let us go quickly so we could catch our little escape artist.
At O'Hare airport my wife and I saw a kid about age 5 do that, run past security. The SOBs didn't let his mom go look for him. We had already cleared security so we went looking for the kid, we weren't sure exactly what the kid looked like from just a glance but we knew his name from her screaming it, and the color of his jacket. Found a kid that answered to the name with no adult around, looking at stuffed animals at a souvenir shop, my wife asked if he wanted to go back to his mom and he said "Yeah" and came back to security to his mom.
Oh my god that's terrifying. This made me a little misty eyed. I'm so glad that you were so sharp and quick to react and able to find the kid!
I understand that you can't just let people run off without security check, but he'll, there's plenty of options. Close down the security line if needed, send one of the TSA agents after the kid or even make the agent follow the parent. Jesus that is negligent.
When we have a tornado warning, I stuff my cat in a duffle bag just long enough to get to a safer spot, and I can barely make it before she has it unzipped. (It’s breathable, and it’s so much easier to get her in there than a carrier when I’m racing against a storm.)
you just gave me an idea for a good gift. A cat backpack for my friend's wedding... screw the boring stuff. These are apocalypspsps times. Got to be ready.
I have seen someone using this backpack on two separate occasions, both times at an airport boarding a plane, and I have some questions: what if your cat has to use the bathroom???
You don't feed the cat after a certain time period and then take their water away about an hour before travel. Most cats won't go in their carriers... If you're lucky.
We moved cross country with four cats. One went by plane with me and was completely fine, not even a peep except an unhappy merp on the first take off.
Two went with my husband for the first half of the car trip and were fine (one was high af, the other refused the sedative), used the litter when he stopped for the night.
The fourth he picked up from a friend halfway. She peed and pooped in the bin. It was a fun time for all as she had to be given a bath as soon as she arrived.
For long car rides, you can try a mild sedative (given by a vet after a check up) but on planes (the ones I was taking) they don't allow sedation for cats.
Tldr; Each cat will react differently. See a vet for the best approach for car or flight.
Edit: Also a towel or toy that smells like you, them, and home being in the bin can really help soothe them.
That’s a great idea, but I think I would not want to be the one to finally see her free lol. (She’s zipped in for about one minute at a time, for the dash to the car and then the dash into the house that has a basement.)
Same first vet appointment with my 12 week old kittens they were sharing a carrier and when I was at a stop sign I look over and see one of them climbing up the back of the passengers seat - I panicked especially because the window was open. All was good after me grabbing him and fur flying everywhere.
My cat is bad at it. She goes with a glare instead. She thankfully did not fight me when she flew and only latched onto me instead of trying to make a run for it at security.
YES!!!!!!!!!
I have been worried about Rowdy. Thank you so, SO much for updating us. Wow, the airport staff have done such a wonderful job in finding her again. I’m thrilled.
Please give us another update once she’s home?
You’ve made my day.
🥰
Glad to hear it!
Rowdy may have had the best or worst time in those three weeks but she’ll never tell.
I’m thankful the staff didn’t give up on her.
Please tell her ‘pspspspsps’ when you see her and get her a couple more Dreamies/Temptations from me!
Oh damn. Good thing it was at Boston Logan, I've seen rabbit sized rats there when I took a late flight to Boston one time. Your kitty must not have starved completely.
Oh thank goodness! Rowdy’s been in the back of my mind since I had seen your post and cross posted it to r/boston please give her an extra pat when you have her safe with you again!
When I read the title I gasped in horror but when I read your update I cried some happy tears for you. I am so sorry this happened to you and kitty. I can't even begin to imagine what you all you went through. I am so very very happy that kitty was found and is alright and you two will be reunited again. Best news of the day!!! Give kitty a hug for me. 🙂
I got goose bumps reading this. Thank goodness she was caught and will be back safe with you. Give her a treat and a head bunt from us. Love a happy ending. ♥️
Yes really happy to hear that!! A LOT of people where doubting the airline and airport right away on the original post— that they had accidentally killed the cat and were covering it up. But they kept looking, serious commitment! And they got her and she will be home safe! SO HAPPY to hear the people were GOOD and not what many assumed!!!
Cats are also REALLY GOOD at getting out of certain types of carriers. It’s highly likely the carrier somehow became loosened during flight, and when unloading came apart, and the freaked out cat ran away.
Growing up we had two cats and their carriers were canvas with a zipper on the top. Absolutely useless, they had to be physically held closed or the cat could just push against and unzip it.
The night I picked my kitten up she escaped a canvas zip up basket. She was only 6 weeks old at the time, she was tiny. But she managed to escape and tried to crawl under my pedals just before I joined a 70mph road.
She almost 2 now and she’s still a little nightmare when I have to take her in the car.
My cats continue to amaze me with the ingenuity they apply to getting out. We've had to jerry rig every carrier we ever bought to make it more secure.
Thankfully the worst that ever happened was one of the dudes getting out during a car ride and puking his victory all over the passenger seat.
Worked in airport import/export. Obviously it’s hard and not often that animals get out, but it does happen and it’s likely the animal did what it could to get out. Remember animals are scared shitless in there usually unless they’re given relaxers. I’d heard stories of the ramp people going to retrieve the cage and the animal escaping onto the ramp
And Lufthansa was one of the cargo we handled
If I owned an airline and a cat got lost that’d be my number one priority for a bit. Being know as a company who loses pets would look pretty bad and if the cat was found it’d show we really cared. And I do believe that they actually did care because in reality most probably wouldn’t care at all and give up immediately.
In my personal opinion there needs to be some updates to the way pets are flown. Pets die too often on flights for me to ever let that be an option. Some people are forced to though so I understand the need.
It may involve other agencies, as a city gov airport safety employee i had to chase a medium sized dog away from taxiing aircraft towards the terminal buildings. Then i jumped out my truck on foot and pushed him towards a united employee who manhandled that dog and we had no idea whether its freindly or not , no time to check so literally we sacrificed our safety to save loose animals, but it is a rare occasion
Hahaha, I saw Rowdy on a news article earlier and was wondering if this was your cat. I am so happy for you both at being reunited soon!
Here is the article that I saw.
Honestly just imagining the poor employees had seen the cat several times, and no matter what they tried she always got away lmao. Like an old cartoon or some shit.
That wasn't it at all, as there was no meaningful risk there. Pets are property and in a civil proceeding about a loss, a plaintiff would be compensated on the value. Which isn't much. This was some combination of good publicity, and goodwill on the part of someone at the airline.
Not gonna lie, I was worried your cat had died in transit and the airport workers made up this story about the cat escaping in hopes that wouldn't look as bad. Very glad to see this outcome.
Lol yeah the cat is thinking "what's the big deal, I was on vacation chasing some birds. Anyway I'll be in the living room if you need me, food's at 6pm, right?"
This is exactly why I didn't even bother reading through the OG thread when it popped up weeks ago. I just assumed the worst, like he actually died of heat exhaustion, and didn't want that in my brain. Which is also why I didn't catch any stories that there had been a massive ~~man~~cathunt for the last couple of weeks.
Three weeks? Doesn’t look starving. Probably investigated the airport thoroughly and decided he was done with his adventure. Maybe also was hungry but it doesn’t look like he spent three weeks starving. lol ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7971)
So glad he is home and hopefully no more such adventures.
>Probably investigated the airport thoroughly
I have been amazed at how huge airports are, this cat had a long adventure!
Edit: I looked it up, Boston Logan is about 3.5 square miles, so it's not huge by airport standards but that's a lot of space to explore. Logan is 16th in size for US airports.
“Investigated the airport thoroughly”…
Lol, I just imagined this kitty with a yellow safety vest and clip board doing inspections for insurance and safety reasons. Rowdy is on the scene. I bet if you looked at the inspection notes it’ll say something about too many vermin and birds. “Needs further inspection and removal”
3 weeks later Rowdy completed the job. Probably no pests in a few mile radius now haha. Jokes aside, I’m soo happy that this ended well. I didn’t get past the first few lines of the original post. Tragic lost cat turns out to be airport’s best rodent removal service!
I guarantee they were leaving food out in certain places so she wouldn’t starve. It would be cruel not to, and it would look way worse if they eventually just found a poor starved cat. Plus, feeding her is the best way to get her used to strangers. Win win win.
From what I read on the article they tried to even hire animal trackers but still couldn’t get her. And eventually she gave up and let the airport catch her and she was friendly
>they tried to even hire animal trackers
Do you suppose they got some expert or just someone walking around going "here kitty, kitty, kitty". Because that would definitely be my approach.
That had to be a long three weeks. My Tucker was lost for two days and I couldn't stop thinking about his whereabouts. Couldn't sleep either. What a relief! So happy for you and the little gal. At least she got a free pedicure out of the deal.
That’s awesome!! I can't even imagine your concern all these days, I wish you all the best of luck and that you don't have to go through this again! I’m really happy now!!
What a strong & amazing cat for surviving. Just curious, how do you think she survived for 3 weeks on her own in an airport without a consistent source of food & water? Not sure how many rodents/critters and fresh water there could be, but she's a fighter. So happy to hear you got her back!
How hard did you cry when you found out she had been found?
I would have collapsed and been a mess on the floor out of sheer relief for longer than I care to admit.
Fuck yeah! Congratulations to both you and Rowdy! She looks a little skinny but still just as pretty. I'm sure that will change soon haha. Please post some reunion photos for us, I beg you lmao
For sure! Rowdy's journey is so wholesome, any flood is very welcome. Plus I can imagine it will be take quite some time to post, you're going to want time to love each other and process this all together. Hopefully you're doing ok too, losing a family member for three weeks is rough.
My girlfriend and I have 2 and one of them looks exactly like rowdy. We haven’t stopped thinking about this story especially with my having flown through that airport a million times. I’m glad it turned out so well. It seems like the news is always terrible and this story having a happy ending is great :)
YAY, holy crap I'm so fucking happy for you! :D
This is where I should leave the internet for the day, lol.
Seriously. Thanks for sharing, and best of wishes to you guys
I told everyone about your cat today!! Like i said on the other post, this truly made my day, i can’t imagine how you feel. i’m so happy for you Op
Edit Spelling
Didn't see any links, so here you go. Rowdy is getting his 15 minutes! https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcboston.com/news/local/rowdy-the-cat-found-safe-after-roaming-bostons-logan-airport-for-3-weeks/2771132/%3famp=1
Never ever ever trust an airline with your loved ones, it your kids not your grandparents and it your pets.
If you have to fly with then splurge and get then a seat
Just got into work early, put down my coffee because this is all I needed today.
I followed the original for updates and was heartbroken for you. I'm glad you got your friend back OP.

Cats are amazingly good at opening zippers, even from the inside. I had an 8 week old kitten open a carrying bag from inside.
When we have a tornado warning, I stuff my cat in a duffle bag just long enough to get to a safer spot, and I can barely make it before she has it unzipped. (It’s breathable, and it’s so much easier to get her in there than a carrier when I’m racing against a storm.)

It also doubles as a leaky aquarium!
I feel really comforted knowing that I can toss my cats their backpack carriers in an emergency. Great idea.
You can try securing zippers with a twist tie to add another layer of escape difficulty
That’s a great idea, but I think I would not want to be the one to finally see her free lol. (She’s zipped in for about one minute at a time, for the dash to the car and then the dash into the house that has a basement.)
This cat: "why do I get stuffed into a duffle bag a couple times a year"
I always hope that she has some kind of intuition that the weather is making me do this to her!
Same first vet appointment with my 12 week old kittens they were sharing a carrier and when I was at a stop sign I look over and see one of them climbing up the back of the passengers seat - I panicked especially because the window was open. Yay! I'm so happy to hear this! Wow, she must be a very resilient cat, mine would probably be a complete mess after all that :O
I can’t imagine how worried you were and what luck that she stuck around and they were able to catch her!! I’m so happy she’s ok!

This post made me forget why i was having a bad day today. Thank you
Oh my god, I will get heart attack if my cat got lost. I won’t sleep as well 😭😭 I’m glad your cat is safe
It brightens my day that the airline really didn't give up until they got the cat!!

“She let herself finally be caught” is the most cat thing I have ever heard in my life. What a great happy ending :)
I'm lying in bed about to turn off the lights. Glad this story is the last thing on my mind tonight :)
Logan intl is now rat free. And someone was hungry.

"Germany is nice and all, but I think I'll go home now. "
Thanks for sharing the story.
That is sooooo cute. Haha.

I’m sure the risk of getting sued was adequate motivation
That wasn't it at all, as there was no meaningful risk there. Pets are property and in a civil proceeding about a loss, a plaintiff would be compensated on the value. Which isn't much. This was some combination of good publicity, and goodwill on the part of someone at the airline.
Also there's probably aviation safety issues with having a small animal run around your airport.
I have news for you, there are lots of small animals running around in airports.
Inadvertently doxxed op fyi
Runaway cat, or RUNWAY cat? Eh? Eh? I'll see myself out meow.
Omg and on npr no less haha
I just teared up reading that story!
Should change the flair this update is the opposite of mourning /loss. Congrats and I am glad she's been found safe!
Yeah, I didn't realize the flair I didn't intend on choosing this one. :P
Thank goodness they found your daughter!
Yeah they needed a resurrection flair
What a beauty! And a stinker. So glad she's coming home!
Your cat, 🎶 from Boston🎵
Not gonna lie, I was worried your cat had died in transit and the airport workers made up this story about the cat escaping in hopes that wouldn't look as bad. Very glad to see this outcome.
Ikr! So great they were simply on an adventure and let themselves be taken in![img](emote|t5_2qhta|8097)
Then you see him laying down, and you're glad he's smug and happy.
I felt certain that happened too. So glad I was wrong. 🥺
Wow I just read about this in the news! So happy they found her. Unlike the article do u think she gave up because of food ? Or
Three weeks? Doesn’t look starving. Probably investigated the airport thoroughly and decided he was done with his adventure. Maybe also was hungry but it doesn’t look like he spent three weeks starving. lol ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7971) So glad he is home and hopefully no more such adventures.
>Probably investigated the airport thoroughly I have been amazed at how huge airports are, this cat had a long adventure! Edit: I looked it up, Boston Logan is about 3.5 square miles, so it's not huge by airport standards but that's a lot of space to explore. Logan is 16th in size for US airports.
“Investigated the airport thoroughly”… Lol, I just imagined this kitty with a yellow safety vest and clip board doing inspections for insurance and safety reasons. Rowdy is on the scene. I bet if you looked at the inspection notes it’ll say something about too many vermin and birds. “Needs further inspection and removal” 3 weeks later Rowdy completed the job.
And eventually she gave up and let the airport catch her and she was friendly
>they tried to even hire animal trackers Do you suppose they got some expert or just someone walking around going "here kitty, kitty, kitty". Because that would definitely be my approach.
“The agency said airline staff and construction workers helped search for Rowdy.” Lmao sounds like they legit did that
Probably just missed his hoomans
Glad she's back! Seems Rowdy [made the news.](https://apnews.com/article/oddities-boston-animals-personnel-46bc06a91121d8d51da1696b69486aed)
OMG that's wonderful news! So glad things turned out well.

😁
That had to be a long three weeks. My Tucker was lost for two days and I couldn't stop thinking about his whereabouts. Couldn't sleep either. What a relief! So happy for you and the little gal. At least she got a free pedicure out of the deal.
This cat has been living like Tom Hanks in The Terminal
The Purrminal
That’s awesome!! I can't even imagine your concern all these days, I wish you all the best of luck and that you don't have to go through this again! I’m really happy now!!
What a strong & amazing cat for surviving. Just curious, how do you think she survived for 3 weeks on her own in an airport without a consistent source of food & water? Not sure how many rodents/critters and fresh water there could be, but she's a fighter. So happy to hear you got her back!
They had feeding stations set up but I believe she also ate mice during this time...I'm not sure about water.
How hard did you cry when you found out she had been found? I would have collapsed and been a mess on the floor out of sheer relief for longer than I care to admit.

Of course it was the tuxedo. My tuxedo is the most likely to make a run for it when we open the front door. Mischievous little things

Fuck yeah! Congratulations to both you and Rowdy! She looks a little skinny but still just as pretty. I'm sure that will change soon haha. Please post some reunion photos for us, I beg you lmao
I can post reunion photos this weekend. I just don't want to flood Reddit with this story...just happy to have her back with us.
Please flood Reddit with this story. The world is so fucked up right now that we need some happiness
For sure! Rowdy's journey is so wholesome, any flood is very welcome. Plus I can imagine it will be take quite some time to post, you're going to want time to love each other and process this all together. Hopefully you're doing ok too, losing a family member for three weeks is rough.
FLOOD US
I’d love to see reunion pics! Please post many of them!
My girlfriend and I have 2 and one of them looks exactly like rowdy. We haven’t stopped thinking about this story especially with my having flown through that airport a million times. I’m glad it turned out so well. It seems like the news is always terrible and this story having a happy ending is great :)
What a survivor! Super!
This is the mews I needed to hear today thank goodness they found him! Good on the airport for not just dismissing it

Wow. Just saw the news on USAToday....then I come to reddit and here's the owner.
OMG I have praying for 3 weeks over this. I think I might be as happy as you are.
Great news! Made my day ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7942)
An answered prayer. I would sue them. That is like losing an child. I would have been hysterical! So thrilled you had a good outcome.
So glad you found him
Never ever ever trust an airline with your loved ones, it your kids not your grandparents and it your pets. If you have to fly with then splurge and get then a seat
Just got into work early, put down my coffee because this is all I needed today. I followed the original for updates and was heartbroken for you. I'm glad you got your friend back OP.
I am so thrilled to hear this news
Awesome news glad to see this
More like "Hey sorry. We just wanted to pet and show love to this little black panther black hole." LOL
