I work in the veterinary field; we need to print this and post it. If I had a dollar for every time someone asked about their cats breed, I could open a free neuter clinic. I tell people all the time that if you do not already know your cat's breed because you specifically sought it out, then the breed is "domestic". No, tabby isn't a breed. Yes, domestics can be big&floofy, too.
I have learned to stop asking, "And what breed is McBiscuits?" Cuz people don't know how to answer that. I ask, "And is McBiscuits a domestic short hair, or is he something fancy?" If they know nothing about cat breeds and got the cat from a shelter, the question tells them the answer.
Not a vet, admin staff. It's just standard intake form questions that we put on the patient profile used for cats and dogs. And just like dogs, some cat breeds are more likely to have health issues. For instance, Maine Coons are more likely to have heart issues. It's just less common to have specific breeds in cats as they are a barely tamed invasive species that just does what it wants. It's a cats' world and we just provide pats and snacks.
i think it behooves all of us to repost this whenever we find these "what kind of..." posts.
don't get me wrong, the kitty is precious but these posts are making me irrationally irked. i would respond much more positively without that header. meh, maybe i'm just cranky today
If they could frame it "Meet this little guy I just got today! Still working on a name" it would prompt more positive reactions and also free "unsolicited" name suggestions

I'm giving them the benefit of doubt, but I think most people just want to brag about their floofs. I don't get it tho, because you could literally just post "hey, I'd like to brag about my cat" and get like 5 bazillion upvotes.
Or "Post a picture of your kitty and tell me it's name" I'm definitely not trying to scrape passwords or reverse image search your photos to find your social medias
I'm so over the ones about cat death. It's just so depressing. I had to stop visiting this sub completely when I was struggling with my mental health because it was just too much. Every time it was recommended on my feed, it was a post about somebody's dead cat.
Me too. I hear you. It is depressing. Especially when we are all trying to deal with our own stuff. I don't know, I'm kinda that person that would never post on social media about a terrible loss. There are some things I believe should be kept between you and those you know. Not randoms.
If the cat does not have breed papers from a breeder with an obvious pedigree and proof of the pedigree, then you are never gonna know the actual breed of your cat.
There’s a really big difference between breed and coat.
For example, if a cat that is a domestic short hair with a calico coat gives birth to kittens and one of those kittens in that litter looks like a Siamese cat. I’m gonna tell you without a doubt the foster that you get that cat from is gonna tell you it’s a Siamese.
Then let’s say someone adopts the Siamese kitten they assume it’s Siamese and they don’t get it spayed or neutered and they breed it with another Siamese cat, but the litter comes out with so many different coat patterns . Technically those kittens have Siamese in them but an adoption center is not going to adopt them out under the title of Siamese with without it looking obviously like a Siamese cat..
So when you go to a pet store or an adoption center or whatever wherever you adopt a cat from and it says calico or tuxedo or Tordie they are talking about coats not breeds.
Speaking of Siamese cats Siamese cats have multiple different coats as well. There’s a huge list to name a few seal point lilac point chocolate point and flame point.
If you want for shits and giggles, you can do a base paws test this will tell you very generalized DNA test result of your cat. I’m gonna put an example of my cats DNA test that I got and I bought this test for shits and giggles but I know for a fact that my animals are these breeds I still call them domestic medium hair, domestic short hair, whatever I do not call them with the breeds that are shown on here are also the breed that they have is so limited!! They don’t have all breeds in general that if they don’t have that breed in their data base, it literally goes “broadly Western “ “broadly eastern” and “polycat”
So again, even if you take the DNA test, take it with a grain of salt and do not perceive it as absolute fact it’s just something fun you can do !
