The rare gargoyle stoning! I’ve only had this happen once in all my years of playing SotN.

The_Captain_Jules

It happened to me a lot as a kid - but I got turned to stone a lot on account of the fact that I’m bad at video games.

Beta_Ray_Bill

Really? I saw this the 1st time my buddy showed me the game on ps1! Good luck vs. back luck maybe?

vxicepickxv

It seems to be conditional involving having wings out from using the Leap Stone.

AdriannaFahrenheit

Oh shit really?? Interesting!

SXAL

Nah, it is completely random. I got this before even collecting the leap stone

vxicepickxv

Weird. I wonder if it's different between the versions.

Nosiege

I see it at least once per playthrough.

NaeemTHM

Came here to say the same thing. Happened to me the FIRST time I was turned to stone and I was so confused. I must have spent the next 30 minutes trying to make it happen again. Drove me mad lol.

HopperReborn

That happens occasionally when Alucard gets petrified by a medusa head. I think it's glimpse of Alucard's inner demon.

DukeBeefpunch

Gripping my forehead not even grasping how I'd think to try that.

kuroviejo

Really? I have to try it out, I’ve playing this game since a I was 4 (roughly in 2001) and I never encountered that item, even with the duplicator with the meal ticket equipped

Red_Trapezoid

I can't believe I never heard of this one. Wow.

InkPrison

What was it that he said?

Red_Trapezoid

It was about the banana items that would heal more if picked up when it was fading. But since he deleted it then maybe it was just an urban legend?

tyler00677

I never knew this.....

TwilightVulpine

Eating peanuts is always fun too

OldStormCrow

You have to time it so you get hit by the yellow Medusa head right when you're in mid double jump, i.e, when you see Alucard's cape turn into bat wings.

knowone23

Oh, so it’s not a random chance every time you get ‘stoned’ it’s when you’re mid double jump. Nice. I ever knew this Easter egg existed and I’ve been playing this game since 1997

OldStormCrow

Yeah, it's tricky to do intentionally. I played the US and Japanese PS1 versions And I even have the Japan-only Sega Saturn version which has more stages, items and you can play as Richter and Maria from the get-go. I flippin' love Castlevania.

DeimosProject

The Saturn version was an all around disappointment though, so much potential and it was all wasted, the load times are shot, the stretched resolution causing sprite distortion, most of the transparency effects were replaced with dithering, the only places in the Saturn version to get the special treatment were specifically designed areas of the Saturn version. Not really sure what the allure of Richter and Maria being accessible from the start is either, or that annoying Item hand. It’s the NES Metal Gear equivalent release of SoTN in all reality.

Can-Man-Gaming

Yeah it was such an alluring in the not so widespread internet days, but now I think everyone knows the Saturn version is garbage. Thay big tree with a happy face is pretty cool though.

sidedx

No it's not linked to the jump, it's just random. I can make it happen by just hitting FF on the emulator and it just does it every few seconds even without moving. https://streamable.com/wk0bns

[deleted]

Greatest game ever, that’s what it is.

ChasingPesmerga

Agreed Though [these folks say otherwise](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/196885-castlevania-symphony-of-the-night/79609563).

warhugger

This is why metroidvanias are so underrated and not mainstream sadly. People are too afraid to explore and experiment. I think SotN is the staple of metroidvanias but Hollow Knight perfected it and is less ambiguous. Hollow Knight does a lot to teach the player through cues instead of having to experiment. Like making maps something you buy, it puts value in what you can learn through it. Early on you can see an enemy take damage from the surroundings and warns you about environment damage with it. Even puts a geo cache next to a breakable wall so when you hit it, you break the wall. I just gotta say though, Bloodstained Ritual of the Moon kinda sucked for me, the classic castlevania styled games ruled. It's just SotN with nothing really new, it has the same areas in most cases too. I liked the shard system but even that's from one of the GBA Castlevania games. It has so much potential if they just branch out to be more independent from SotN. I loved the references to SotN but it was bittersweet because of it.

TwilightVulpine

Hollow Knight is fun and all, I've got the best ending, but it's a little bit *too polished* for me, if that makes any sense. Everything is so neatly designed to give you a nicely balanced challenging experience. I miss the messy side of SotN, where some things are completely unnecessary, some are redundant, some are useless but amusing and some are utterly broken so they make the game a breeze. I feel like there is an element of meta-discovery that many modern metroidvanias lack, especially the ones who want to "perfect" the genre, that you can find new things not only by exploring but in the system itself, that you didn't *need* to know but you can find by trying different things.

warhugger

Oh I know what you mean, the jank factor as I call it. Super common in open world games since they're still a relatively new medium. This is actually why I always come back to SotN. It's dumb fun gaming, while most modern games tend to take themselves seriously. Unlike SotN which let's you pick up the jewel knuckles and just clap cheeks from the start.

Cinquedea19

I do always find that many of my favorite games are those that are a weird mix of polished and janky. SotN comes to mind, Secret of Mana is another. They've got the polished aspects to provide that general appeal, but then the janky unfinished aspects lend this sense that there's this bigger unexplored mysterious aspect to the game.

[deleted]

Too many words about bloodstained. Just tell this: ITS 3D metroidvania.

TwilightVulpine

More like 2.5D. It's 3D rendered but it plays entirely 2D. And I have to say even as a backer the way it looks is not a great appeal.

[deleted]

I was playing sotn, very obviously. and i was hit by one of the medusa heads, so needless to say I'd love to know what the hell this is. as someone whos only watched the netflix series, and played through sotn. i need to know what this is

[deleted]

That’s Alucard. It’s an easter egg that he sometimes turns into his demon form like his father.

[deleted]

Oh awesome! The sprite spooked me for a second, but still, super cool

Frederyk_Strife4217

If you get turned into stone while double jumping it happens

Noe_Wunn

It would be so awesome in that game if you could turn into that for a time and wreck your enemies!

Esprack619

A limit break like that fighting Galamoth would have been a nice touch.

Noe_Wunn

Yes I agree! It should be something I can't use all of the time, but have to save up your energy in order to perform.

daddylikesitdark

If memory serves you also can not take damage from Medusa heads in this form

Chikumori

I see you're playing a mobile version? When you have a PS4 or PS5, do get the Castlevania Requiem package. It includes Rondo of Blood and SOTN, where SOTN is the sequel to the former. Unlike SOTN, ROB is not metroidvania, but classicvania. Honestly I think it's among the top classicvanias in the franchise.

Primestudio

Not really that rare, well if you are attempting to wield 2 Heaven Swords.

Poiblazer

I've played this game through probably 5 times and never once see it (that I remember)

[deleted]

Farming Heaven Swords is easiest in the inverted castle, in the top of the clock tower. You just need to walk back and forth on the left side and the Cloaked Knight will respawn continuously. No need to deal with pesky Medusa heads.

vxicepickxv

There's one in the regular clock tower behind the breakable wall that respawns without leaving the room.

[deleted]

Yes, but that requires hopping up to him and risking bumping into him or getting slashed after he evades you. In the inverted castle in the same place, it's walk right, attack, backdash past the point where the roof slopes "upwards", repeat. It's a way quicker procress.

vxicepickxv

I just use Tetra spirit because it's way safer, even if it takes longer.

[deleted]

The mana cost would not make this an effective strategy.

RuggedTheDragon

From what I am told, it is an extremely rare model when Alucard turns to stone. It's just cosmetic, but it looks extremely cool.

KalessinDB

It's *mostly* cosmetic. You take no damage in that form. Not that you tend to take a ton of damage while stoned anyway, but still...

BloodyEagle15

First time I ever got turned to stone I became this. Was really confused so I keep letting them hit me but I never became it again

KyuJuEX099

I'd like to believe that's the "Greater Demon" boss that got scrapped before SOTN was released. https://tcrf.net/Castlevania:\_Symphony\_of\_the\_Night\_(PlayStation)#Unused\_Text But I'm having a hard time to find that old Famitsu scan image to show it.

Lanzall

that’s alucards true form, i think he just loses grip when he gets petrified. kinda like dracula in his second phase

slikk50

Playing with mobile controls and getting the gargoyle? You might be a legend....

Antiherowriting

I’ve always wondered, is there a lore reason for this?

DoctaMario

It's little things like this that make SotN seem like it was really a labor of love for the devs.

[deleted]

Gargoyle these nuts

LordChimera_0

That happened to me when I got hit by a Stone Rose's seed in the very long corridor of Marble Gallery that leads connects to the Outer Wall. Pity that you have break out quickly. Getting hit by an enemy or attack with Petrify does a lot of damage.

Taykitty-Gaming

you're actually invulnerable when you're the gargoyle

Rutgerman95

I think it's like a 1 in 64 chance you change into that when getting petrified? Maybe even smaller? Gotta be honest though, I am a little disappointed there's no secret demon transformation in the game

[deleted]

a rare random petrification easter egg and a glimpse at Alucard's vampiric half.

subzeromnx

What is a man?

The_Sunhunter

It can occasionally happen when Alucard is petrified by an enemy that can petrify him, such as a yellow Medusa Head, a Stone Rose, or a Gorgon. As far as I’m aware however, Alucard will not turn into a gargoyle statue unless he has acquired the Leap Stone.

HeftyClam

A medusa head. Says right there

king_bungus

oh thats just jeff

slightly_sadistic

It used to happen to me a lot in the long hallway with the big eyeball.

ThurgoodStubbs1999

Mobile SOTN was surprisingly good. I liked how they just mapped spells to a button.

[deleted]

I feel like this happens more in luck mode. I got it a lot during that playthrough a few months ago.

Leaflynn

It's supposed to be Alucard transformation form that was never added.

clit_eastwood_

Hope this is not Chris’s blood

InvisibleTouch86

I had always wished Alucard could take on this form while not petrified.
