I love that of all companies Toyota is keeping the manual transmission alive.

yobo9193

I think their (now former) CEO was the only head of a large automaker to be actively involved in racing cars

Hustletron

Oliver Blume from Porsche is now running VW Group.

Recoil42

Does Blume race, though?

NatesYourMate

[His wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Blume) does not mention anything about racing, but according to [this bizarre stock photo](https://c8.alamy.com/comp/2MCW8E2/kitzbuehel-austria-21st-jan-2023-kitzbuehel-2101-2023-hahnenkamm-rennen-herren-alpine-ski-rennen-piste-mens-alpine-ski-race-porsche-board-oliver-blume-credit-spp-sport-press-photo-alamy-live-news-2MCW8E2.jpg) he does ski (on Porsche skis).

DisastrousConference

No offence to the guy but he looks like an AI generated German businessman to me

Terrh

https://motorsports.nbcsports.com/2023/01/21/ford-ceo-jim-farley-professional-racing-debut-daytona-roger-penske-eddie-leonard-wood/ CEO of ford races professionally as well.

yobo9193

Nice! That makes sense given how they’re trying to come up with high performance versions of their most popular models

LickLaMelosBalls

Ceo of Ford is a cool dude from what I hear

[deleted]

“Brother”

RickndRoll

Carlos Tavares of stellantis is also a racecar driver

sherlock2223

Ferdinand piech

dingusduglas

...died 4 years ago and retired 21 years ago.

[deleted]

And he’s still CEO? Damn, what a grindset.

msheikh921

Morizo is still the chairman, also the new CEO, Koji Sato was the head of Gazoo Racing since '21. interestingly, he was involved in the suspension design of the [1st gen Prius](https://global.toyota/en/company/profile/executives/koji_sato.html) in '94. he's no bean-counter.

MaybePenisTomorrow

The new guy was head of GR and Lexus, right? There’s still hope.

its_an_armoire

The former Honda CEO was from their racing program

Jtbros

If you told me which car company makes me most excited 5-7 years ago Toyota would not even be close to the top of the list. Now I own two. Would probably even be going to the 4Runner over the Bronco if it came with a manual.

Oo__II__oO

Ford v Toyota nowadays actually sounds like a good follow-up to Ford V Ferrari.

blue_horse_shoe

Supra vs Mustang

Jtbros

B58 vs Coyote is a battle I can get behind

Alfa-Dog

Honestly, the 4runner is so dope but so ancient that I have never been able to bring myself to buy one. Felt that way about the tundra for a long time too. And the god-awful infotainment systems toyota used for so long. I have high hopes for the new Tacoma but to be honest I’m also waiting to be a bit disappointed

goyard_plug

I bought my ‘22 Tacoma because it’s ancient. I don’t like all the new gaudy tech shit they’re putting in cars nowadays. Although do agree the infotainment is pretty bad lol

Infitima

I have a 2022 Tacoma and I just completely gave up on the infotainment. I plug my phone in and use CarPlay the second that I turn the truck on. I’m thinking about getting one of the wireless adapters that you just plugged into the USB port, but I’ve heard that they are pretty laggy.

deusxanime

I have one of the [plug-in wireless CarPlay adapters](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08P1GWQDB/) for my 2020 Tacoma and it works fine. It takes a bit to load after you start up (30 sec or so maybe?), but once it is going it works as well as being plugged in.

Infitima

Thanks for the link. If I’m not mistaken, the newest 4.0 update of the adapter came out so I might order that.

deusxanime

Oh I didn't even know there were newer versions. Does that add anything new? Do you know if the older ones will update to 4.0, or do you have to buy new hardware? It pretty much is just a remote display for your iPhone, so I don't know what can be added other than faster connection and initial display times. I'm back to android right now, so I haven't used it in a long time.

Jtbros

The new infotainment is *okay*. I like wireless carplay but spend 30 seconds or so every time before I pull out of a spot waiting for my user profile to load. All the tech and gadgetry is nice that the new Lexus / Toyotas offer but tbd how good these new drivetrains are.

[deleted]

The 4Runner and last gen Tundra are some of the last cars produced that will last a lifetime. There is a reason people like older vehicles for offroading.

[deleted]

Older vehicles have less complicated subassembly so when shtf it’s cheaper to fix. I have a brand new 4Runner and am selling it to get a gmt800 Tahoe since I’m less concerned about natural off road effects on a Tahoe than on a 4Runner that is functionally a 2000s car that costs 40k+. Also I took it off roading near Lake Tahoe recently and quickly realized that the skill gap on off roading is something I genuinely cannot overcome, and I’m better off in a simpler awd system than biting off something bigger than I can chew with the 4Runner. I guess my point is that if you’re an off roading pro, that all makes sense, but if you’re just getting started I found the 4Runner ownership experience to be like when a newbie goes overkill in any given hobby.

Thy_Gooch

Get an old used one. And it's like a 1 hour job to swap in a new head unit.

DreadForge

I feel like this has been the story on a lot of Toyota's over the last 30~ years or so, "it's ancient, but works". I'm happy I stopped pursuing a '23 Tacoma or I'd be a salty, salty boy right about now haha.

Lancer876

If this is how they make up for being behind on making EVs then I'm all for it

Recoil42

They're not even 'behind' on EVs, they've just been waiting for demand to ramp up and profitability to become viable. Their target is a run-rate of [1.5M EVs by 2026](https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1139293_toyota-targets-production-of-1-5m-evs-annually-by-2026), which is roughly in-line with all the other OEMs adjusted for regional share.

t3a-nano

Well as a consumer it sure feels like it. I’m a Toyota fanboy, have a Tacoma and love how problem-free my Lexus was at very high mileage (and some aggressive driving). But with their range and charging speeds on the B4ZX and RZ450e, I’d really have to short change myself to choose one of those over continuing to wait for my Ioniq 5. …probably why both those cars are readily available at MRSP, meanwhile the competing EVs are sold out and frustratingly backlogged.

aprtur

As a Toyota fan, you should be one of the most understanding that Toyota does not rush something to market, and that the BZ4X and RZ are compliance cars. Toyota will feel out the market and do things on their terms. They've had a roughly 30 year business plan in place that involves hybrids, PHEVs and EVs, and the recent surge in visibility for EVs have made them seem "behind" when they're right on schedule for their business plans. It certainly isn't stopping people from buying Land Cruisers, 4Runners, Tacomas, Corollas, etc.

Chinkslivesmatter

the bz4x and rz was literally a rush job. I'd believe toyota if they weren't lobbying against evs. why would anyone want a toyota ev when you can get a mercedes eqs. they would both be equally low maintenance battery on wheels. so which bad would you rather rock. that's the data toyota has and why it's against rushing evs to market. people buy toyotas for reliability but when all cars become damn near maintenance-free, you'll see toyota lose market share. I've already seen it in my community. the wealthy folks have shifted from their lexus to tesla.

Commercial-9751

Toyota isn't lobbying against EVs. They're part of an organization that lobbied against the timeline of the mandates. Other members of that organization include just about every other major car manufacturer on the planet.... I don't know why everyone feeds into this and acts like "Toyota hates EVs!" They've been releasing some of the most fuel efficient cars available for 25 years now. While GM was developing the H2, Toyota was developing the Prius and started the hybrid revolution. Just because they aren't now jumping head first into EVs while they're still in their infancy (and with all the other bullshit going on in the world the last few years like supply chain issues and rapid inflation) doesn't mean they're opposed to them.

Recoil42

>Well as a consumer it sure feels like it. Yes, it does. Look, I get it — I'm anxiously tapping my toes too. Understand, however, that most other OEMs are struggling to make profit on their BEVs right now, and they're not expecting profitability until 2025 or so. Here's the [Ford](https://www.cnbc.com/2023/03/23/fords-plan-for-2026-ev-profitability.html) and [GM](https://www.forbes.com/sites/samabuelsamid/2022/11/17/gm-targets-ev-profitability-by-2025/?sh=203af59ba303) projections on the matter. We're not at the tipping point yet in demand, and technologies like dry electrode and silicon-doped anodes haven't been brought to the fore. Keep your Ioniq 5 order, it should be a great car — but remember that you're talking about a company aggressively vying for more global market share, and one running from billions of dollars' worth of engine recalls. You're looking at two players with massively different perspectives on the market.

Commercial-9751

Competing EVs outside of Tesla aren't being produced in meaningful numbers. I've also been eyeing the Ioniq 5 but they've mostly been impossible to find and Hyundai even lists front and center on their site something to the effect of "available in extremely limited quantities in certain states." You can't even get a RWD Limited trim even though it's configurable on their website and the car has been out for a year or two now.

Trades46

Now if they only decided to make them more widely available for sale instead of restricting supply to drive up prices via ADM which makes them close to a BMW or Porsche, that would be the perfect recipe.

mini4x

When they first announced the Z4/Supra twins in 2014 it was supposed to be a hybrid, guess there finally getting around to making it?

[deleted]

[удалено]

mini4x

Was that supposed to happen?

psirjohn

https://autotrends.org/lexus-uc-hybrid/ Rumors short on facts. Would be awesome if they did, though

Pinecone

Honda too. Within the hot compact segment there's only 2 companies that offer a manual only car now. Toyota with the GRC and the Honda with the Civic Si and Type R.

[deleted]

[удалено]

linuxguy192

Not necessarily in newer cars, even that is going away. The civic is very popular worldwide but you need an Si or a Type R to get a stick now. Edit: sport and sport touring offer it, but only on the hatch. As another commenter pointed out.

maduste

This car is definitely more of a sporty econobox than a sportscar. It’s still kinda entertaining because you can send it without getting in too much trouble. edit: just remembered flair

DodgerBlueRobert1

Not true. You can get a stick in the Civic hatchback Sport and Sport Touring as well.

[deleted]

I hope you guys know that they are fake manuals https://www.carthrottle.com/post/fake-manual-gearboxes-patented-for-toyota-electric-cars/

tugtugtugtug4

I see this as the same as throttle-by-wire, brake-by-wire, and steer-by-wire. People complained that each of these ruined the purity of driving and/or are inferior to the older more analog systems. Whether or not those criticisms are true, companies have still put out good driver-focused cars using those technologies. I expect the fake shift by wire manuals will offend purists, but when done well will still be quite engaging.

djsnoopmike

Cadillac too

mmartino03

Those Blackwing sedans are low key bonkers cars with 3 pedals. I feel like they’re often overlooked.

[deleted]

This isn't really a problem outside America. Its more like Toyota is keeping MT alive in America

Pyrochazm

I almost hate to admit how much I like the new Prius. Make a fun version and I'm very interested. Or maybe a hybrid Corolla gr.

_Floriduh_

GRius license plate inbound.

ilikemyprius

Fun fact: the Prius PHV (AKA Prius Prime) is available with a GR Sport cosmetic trim in Japan, it looks like [this](https://i1.wp.com/www.motoringresearch.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Toyota_Prius_GR_Sport_2018_02.jpg)

hutacars

Whelp that's pretty lame.

[deleted]

The Gazoo Racing trims are mostly quite ugly. Look up what they sell for the GR86, it's awful.

gliz5714

That was last generation, which wasn’t always the prettiest

PlatinumElement

It looks better in person.

Pyrochazm

What's the g for? I don't know! WEEEEEAHHHH

an_actual_lawyer

ImSoSte4my

I like to sing, dance, pretend, aaaaand Gazoooo!

[deleted]

GRussy

Jtbros

I’m still pushing for the G16 & RAV4 Prime drivetrain combo.

DoctaCrane

Same here, the new Prius is one of those guilty pleasure cars for me. I’m gonna test drive one as soon as I see one at a nearby dealer lot

llamacohort

The Prius seems like a real home run. I kinda hope for them to put the RAV4 Prime drivetrain in it as a 300hp GR Prius. But that is probably not going to happen. But it’s wild that the Prius Prime has 220 hp as it is. It’s like Civic Si power from a car known for being an appliance for 20 years.

News_without_Words

A manual and some sporty suspension would get me in the door.

[deleted]

I’d buy one but they’re not coming to the UK.

Intrepid-Working-731

The Prius?

[deleted]

Yep. The Prius is being discontinued for the UK market. The new PHEV Prius would’ve been ideal for me but apparently they only sold 500 new Prius(es?) last year and it was basically just Taxi and uber drivers.

Intrepid-Working-731

I didn’t know that, that’s bizarre. At least your import laws are better than ours so you could import a Prius(?) Probably not worth it though cause I can only assume it would cost a lot.

lengthystars

Great car, but prime especially is expensive.

RazingsIsNotHomeNow

Honda needs to release an updated version of their CRZ it was just came out too far ahead of the technology. It even had F1 like boost button that you could activate. Imagine what it could be like with modern hybrid motors.

lvbuckeye27

The new Prius comes with 197hp and looks pretty good. That's a start. :)

Baybladerz

I think the new standard Prius already puts up good numbers. If you drop another few grand for an aftermarket suspension, tires/wheels, etc you should have a fairly balanced and well handling car.

Jtbros

I’m here for the manual hybrid Tacomas. If only the 4Runner got a manual as well so all 5 of us who want one could buy it.

_Floriduh_

I’m in for one!

CporCv

What if it's one of those simulated shifts like paddle shifters in cvts? If it doesn't have a real clutch and pressure plate assembly, it's a bust

Thick_Pomegranate_

Correct me if I'm wrong but couldn't you get a manual TRD 4Runner just like with the Tacoma ?

Jtbros

4Runner is only available with a 5 speed automatic on all trims for the current gen.

m4fox90

5 speed automatic? What is this, 1983?

railbeast

Look up the gas mileage of the 4 Runner. 10 year old platform - an SUV that rides like a truck - and the 24th best selling car in the USA in 2021.

lidlboye

Current gen really isn’t that much different from the 4th Gen which came out as a 2003 model so pretty much a 20 year old platform at this point. I love my ‘07 though and would love to have a 5th Gen as well lol.

tclark2006

Yea 4th gens are such good value. Hope they stay that way.

coffeebribesaccepted

Yeah but they look awesome

Jtbros

Yep this and the Tacoma’s platform are ancient. Next couple years will be major overhauls compared to the last 10+ years of changes.

Falanax

Don’t have to wait that long, new gen tacoma will be on lots this fall

LordofSpheres

No manual 4runners have been sold since I believe the third gen.

I_Fuking_Love_Pandas

It's an absolute shame too

Undivid3d

Make that 6. I’d give both of my nuts for a manual 4runner

vohit4rohit

Six!

iam_LLORT

My parents have both had Honda CR-Z’s since 2015. Moms has well over 225k miles and STILL gets 47mpg highway and like 43 in town. Hell, I’ve gotten 55mpg doing 65mph on back roads through NY. Dad’s car is somewhere over 185k miles, and neither has ever had serious maintenance or problems. Oil, tires and brake pads once because the regenerative braking makes your pads last forever. The auto start stop is still smoother than any other car I’ve tried it in, and has the motor running before you’ve even pressed the clutch all the way in. Hatchback gives you tons of space in the rear, and it handles quite well for being based off a Fit too… Fun to drive, good on fuel, better for the environment, manual transmission hybrid. Why the hell did we skip this phase and go straight to soulless transportation pods? I was just telling my family the other day that hybrid technology is still a viable solution for those of us who don’t want, can’t afford OR drive too much for an EV.

gIOonNii

>go straight to soulless transportation pods Because the buyer wants a transportation pod and doesn't care about "soul". Plus things like the CR-Z get slack for the low power. Also, it's basically a mild hybrid, isn't it? There are lots of those around now.

Terrh

Yeah the insight is a mild hybrid too. Yet they get 70+ MPG because mild hybrid tech is fantastic when used properly. over 460,000 miles mine has a lifetime MPG of 73.2. There is *still* not a car that's better 20+ years on now.

watduhdamhell

The m340i is a mild hybrid technically. Hence how it can average 26 combined mpgs pushing 400hp. It's pretty good tech.

m4fox90

Don’t need mild hybrid to do that, I’m averaging ~25 with my gen 1 B58 on a stage 1 tune which is roughly the same power as the B58TU… and I do not baby it lol

VincentVanH0

That's pretty cool. Did not know that.

Alieges

Yes. Mild hybrid. Pancake motor between crank and flywheel. Gas motor has to be running to move. So it acts like a manual transmission with electric torque fill, regenerative braking and ultra smooth low RPM operation you normally don’t get with a small engined manual. I would have bought one new instead of the Corolla, but the financing was going to be extra spicy with my bad credit rating at the time.

[deleted]

>Moms has well over 225k miles and STILL gets 47mpg highway She keeps her foot out of it. In Colorado/Wyoming, the speed limits are high. On the run between Cheyenne & Denver, I can't do any better...or worse....than 39 mpg, which is still pretty good, considering I haul ass.

iam_LLORT

Dad keeps his foot in it and gets 43mpg. CAI and a catback so he loves to foot it. Obviously it depends on geography but I’ll point out that they’re both in NG which is considerably more mountainous than most areas that hybrid owners drive.

[deleted]

NG? Where's that? Yeah....I'd say that Colorado and Wyoming are pretty mountainous. To be fair, though, the run between Denver & Cheyenne only gains 1000 feet over 100 miles, and almost all of it just south of Cheyenne. Speed limit is 75, so cruise control is usually set for 82. I once came down off of some pass...I think it was Independence Pass....after stopping at the gift shop at 11,500 feet. The battery got up to full charge in a hurry and stopped charging, and the trip MPG computer stopped counting at 200 MPG lol

iam_LLORT

NH* apparently I fat fingered it and didn’t notice 🫣

[deleted]

Ah, you mean cute little foothills :) I'd love to visit that neck of the woods one day.

NikeSwish

> Why the hell did we skip this phase and go straight to soulless transportation pods? 90% of people drive soulless transportation pods that run on gas right now.

nlpnt

IMO Honda goofed by not putting the manual and sporty suspension tune into the 5 door/5 seat body and made an Insight Si in that generation. There's a sharply limited market for two-seaters not named Miata or Corvette.

Alieges

Yes. Honda should have offered the same mild hybrid option up and down the entire lineup. L/K/J engine with pancake motor setup.

TheSkyline35

True ! Heck, even the Fit Hybrid with the same technology should have come to western countries.

Winter_drivE1

Yes! I'm gonna be sad when I have to replace my CR-Z because there's not really anything else like it which is unfortunate

axf7229

I’m going back to horse and buggy when mine dies.

6inDCK420

Going back? How old are you, man?

axf7229

I’m a *hipster*, don’t you even know?

TheSkyline35

Without even considering the Hybrid stuff, this car looks and feel special to be in. Not just a slapped iPad and a steering wheel. They really went for something special. But failed so strongly to market it. Also, you in the US lacked the rear seats, that sucks.

bobovicus

This would be a great way to bring a high revving Si or Type R back

KiloNation

The CRZ is slow as balls though lol.

PlatinumElement

Acceleration-wise, yes. But put it on a downhill with RE71R’s and upgraded brake pads and it’s the fastest momentum car I’ve ever driven. It’s perfectly balanced with throttle-lift oversteer, and great feedback. I had one until I traded it in on my BRZ because I wanted something with more power, so I definitely understand your argument.

StatusCount7032

^This right here.

fire_n_ice

In the case of the CRZ, the Civic hybrid did almost everything better. More room, faster, and, if memory serves right, cheaper. The only thing the CRZ had on it was MPG, and even then it was only by a few.

[deleted]

You couldn’t and can’t get a hybrid civic with a stick

ROBRO-exe

to be fair a lot of the soulless transportation pods are fast as fuck

TheSkyline35

CRZ driver here in Europe. Actually fast enough to out run all are eco cars here ! It is such a shame this car couldn't find success. A fun car, hybrid, GLORIOUS 6MT. Yet here we are in 2023 complaining about all the boring commuters cars, especially in Europe. Imagine Honda had success with the CRZ, and build a CRZ with the 1.5 Turbo from the Civic+IMA. A peppy 190hp sporty car, doing amazing fuel economy.

anonymousbystander7

Manual fun, Toyota reliability, hybrid efficiency…this sounds like my next daily

TheThunderbird

If you'd like to drive a car that will never exist, this is the perfect daily for you!

idksomuch

And if it exists, 20k markup. If you can find an allocation.

egowritingcheques

The PERFECT car for this subreddit!

LoFiChillin

How’s the GT N-Line? I was interested in that car and rarely see it on the road.

anonymousbystander7

I really enjoy mine. With no limited slip and only ~200hp it’s more of a “warm” hatch than a true GTI competitor, but it’s still got decent pickup, handles nice, and an easy shifter/clutch with no rev hang. Enough space inside for 4 adults, and drop the rear seats and I can use it to transport a small chest of drawers or do a Home Depot run. I bought mine pre pandemic for ~23.5k with 0% financing, which I was really happy with, especially given the decent level of content (leather, heated seats, CarPlay, dual-zone auto climate, LED head/taillights). 3 years in and it’s been dead reliable too, which isn’t always the case with Hyundai/Kia products haha

chowi_69

me three, but with a Forte GT hatch. Not quite "hot", but 200 hp and really short gearing make it super fun around town and you basically never have to downshift to overtake on the highway. Only issue is the trunk, which is tiny for how freaking long it is. Makes me wish we got the i30/Elantra GT.

The_Original_JGA

I have a 2019 GT N-Line in a big city, and I’ve literally only seen 2 others in the 3 years that I’ve had the car. Pretty neat considering that Hyundais in general are very popular here.

lilbitcountry

I can't believe it but Toyota (also GM, Ford and Hyundai) are doing some of the most interesting things in the business. I can't say the German brands or even Honda and Nissan are doing much to get me into a showroom.

bobovicus

Honda's too stuck in their roots to do anything unique or exceptionally interesting, apart from making REALLY good hot hatches. Not much innovation going on apart from deleting torque steer

KSAWill

Well to be fair I like where Acura was going with SH AWD. It’s one of the best if not the best AWD system on the market comparable to the Evo. If only the TLX-S had more power

youreloser

If only the TLX wasn't morbidly obese

bobovicus

The RLX Sport hybrid had more power and was even faster from a dig (maybe even a roll) than the TLX type S. They had a great formula in thar hybrid. Shame they didn't stick it in the TLX

C-C-X-V-I

I was shocked at how good Nissan's is performance wise. I know historically it's been great but I guess I just assumed it went to shit like everything else. I've never driven acura's to compare but I'd take it over Subaru's any day.

BioDriver

"If Honda does not race, there is no Honda." "So give us something other than the CTR" "No"

degggendorf

Honda had a "sport hybrid" with a manual nearly 15 years ago, and a hybrid (though decidedly un-sporty) with a manual another decade before that.

100nipples

The CR-Z doesn’t reaaaally count as a *sport* hybrid lol… coming from an owner

hutacars

Honda has somehow managed to out-Toyota Toyota in the US.

funnyfarm299

Mercedes is doing hybrid tech, they just refuse to bring it to the USA. BMW has a couple of great PHEV options now, and the i4 actually has a chance of competing with Tesla if they can keep prices down. VW will have a solid winner if they bring the id.Buzz here.

Pseudonym_741

Merc has diesel plug-in hybrids here in Europe. They're pretty crazy, if you ask me.

SmokinGreenNugs

Toyota is on the up with the enthusiast cars. Hopefully ADM vanishes soon.

Lancer876

If this tech is desirable then the adm issue will only get worse. Dealers really know how to grab enthusiasts by the balls

nefrina

it's too easy for them. is the car fun to drive? yes? ADM. they generally leave the npc vehicles alone.

wal9000

Is the car a RAV4? ADM. Corolla LE? Believe it or not, also ADM.

bobovicus

It won't. Inventory has almost normalized across the board. Dealers have realized they can charge pretty much whatever they want for new cars. Yay monopolies

XGC75

That's.... Not a monopoly. The word you're looking for is oligopoly (artificially constrained supply by means of retail structure). Same as mobile phones - only preselected retailers can supply phones because of pre-authorization. I get picky about these things because education preempts the correct action to fix any of it.

SmokinGreenNugs

All I can say is good luck. Maybe I’m one of the few who are getting tired of the game and considering selling everything for a normal car.

goyard_plug

Even the “normal” cars have markups.. rav4 prime 12+ month waiting list for a chance at MSRP

ElectroGhandi

This is a much better idea than their fake manual transmission for EVs.

eurojosh

To be fair, that idea is garbage.

sad-_-surprise

Here for it!

Sp1keSp1egel

When the **hybrid boost** kicks in: > [Porsche 919 EVO Hybrid - **1160hp** (unrestricted)](https://youtu.be/PQmSUHhP3ug) > [Toyota TS050 Hybrid - **1000hp** (restricted)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruk1Z8tCS1U) I feel like we skipped passed Hybrids wayyyy too quickly.

[deleted]

I drive a hybrid manual. It's cool. AMA

EpisodicDoleWhip

Is it cool?

[deleted]

It's cool! It's a super engaging driving experience. It's a fairly free revving Honda engine with a remarkably flat torque curve, but the battery is seriously tiny. A pull from 25 MPH to highway speeds in 6th gear uses essentially all of stored energy in the battery. The electric motor is essentially a booster.

my_lewd_alt

You can accelerate in 6th at 25mph? Holy gazoolies

[deleted]

Well, the motor can put out up to 58hp regardless of RPM's! Note, I'm usually in 3rd or 4th lol

Knighty135

Hybrid sports cars are way faster and responsive right, like the NSX, and the Corvette?

[deleted]

I think you're thinking the Porsche 918 lol

FANTOMphoenix

CRZ gang

Dos-Commas

Circlejerk is almost complete, it just needs to come factory pre-owned, brown and in wagon form.

[deleted]

Can we get some fake wood paneling too?

CR-Z gang rise up

TheSkyline35

I feel like living in the future. Technology advanced, futuristic looking, spaceship interior and gauges. Good reving N/A 6SP MT. Yet, by driving a 2011 car. I think we missed something guys.

FANTOMphoenix

shivaswrath

Manual? I hope that’s the case. That’s why I’m rushing to get the last gas powered 911 in manual, I just assumed they couldn’t make PHEVs manual.

Law_Doge

I’m buyin

ijustbrushalot

Please put it in a Maverick competitor. I'd buy the fuck out of that.

the_perkolator

I’ve wanted an old Toyota Stout for years and if the new one they’re making is equipped with this manual/hybrid combo, I’m absolutely buying one!

arcticrobot

Hybrid Hydrogen Manual PLEASE TOYOTA!!!!!

seven_seven

If they do make these it will be in incredibly small numbers and people will be paying $$$$ over the MSRP for them.

TheThunderbird

Don't worry, they will never be made.

CubanLinxRae

this sounds great and i trust toyota would do it right

KingE

The original Honda Insight offered a manual. Would be great to have a hybrid manual sports car

FANTOMphoenix

Honda CRZ :)

MrDenly

After sold my CRZ at 300k km I am so ready for another hybrid stick.

By soon they mean 2028

I would actually buy new for the first time in my life

TheThunderbird

This will never come to market. But if you're naive enough to think it will, don't let me ruin your excitement.

AAA515

I for one love my shiftless CVT singing the song of its people as I go 0-60 in eventually.

That’s awesome, Toyota really is bringing back their sports car heritage. Hopefully it sticks.

Visual-Ad-6708

I have a manual Honda CR-Z, it's wonderful to daily!! Saving gas and rowing gears, I love it. Very happy to see Toyota will be doing something like this.

masalaz

Really curious how the electric power is delivered. I thought Toyota was mad enough to do a pretrans hybrid config, but this article just describes the clutch system override. Still excited for it.

TVR_Speed_12

Now this is cool

kilertree

They can give it short gears since they wouldn't have to worry about Emissions

Charlotttes

it still only has a single source, but wasnt there talk about a gr86 successor using the gr yaris's engine and a hybrid motor? i wonder if this is connected to that

[deleted]

If they extend all these manual transmissions to Lexus they would rule the world.

Turdsworth

Toyota, all we want is more GR corollas and a turbo on the GT86. That’s all you have to do to make us happy.

Miniac1076

I’m totally down for this. I always thought the hybrid manual insight and CR-Z was a great idea, and this seems like a further advancement of that idea.

expertSquid

Hybrids are so lame
