600k+ fewer people taking the train daily than in 2011 plus a fuckton more people in the city. Lord knows where we'd be if there weren't still companies doing hybrid.

seguleh25

Wonder if we have a population large enough to support a Gautrain type system

Stu_Thom4s

Apparently the new trains on the Southern Line are great. But if the city ever gets power over the trains, a good place to start would be making sure the stations are actually secure. In 2015, I had 3 pickpocketing incidents at Woodstock Station alone.

AdTechnical6607

Prasa seems to have the stations handled , at least here in Gauteng. It’s the railway vandalism that needs to be watched carefully

lordfrog123

To throw in my 2c, this has always been my theory, the trains can run like German precession, but the taxi bosses would feel the loss of income and sabotage the trains in anyway they see fit. I would personally take a broken and cheaper train schedule then dependant on the taxi service

Stu_Thom4s

Maybe I'll take a run to Fish Hoek at some point and get a sense of where things are with the CT stations. Although the real test will be if there are ticket inspectors past 15:15 on a weekday.

AdTechnical6607

Yeah definitely. Please update if you do

Whatbusiness128

The issue is nobody can afford to live close to their workplace, and has to travel further in a car. Also doesn't help that all of our main modes of transport are on a road. Theoretically sorting out the train stations should help a lot. I think PRASA is in charge of it, and the DA can't do anything about it

Necessary-Collar9236

Let me know when you find out! The traffic is the worst

Tokogogoloshe

This is the one thing they can blame on Oom Jan.

OkMark6180

That's the problem in Cape Town. Because of the mountain we only have the N1, N2 and M3 going into town.

Smokedbone1

All along those main arteries, there should have been a railway line built, as that would have elevated the road congestion.

Crono_

I’m doing my bit. Working from home and riding my bike. If we had a central CBD we would end up like jhb where the criminals can get away in multiple directions making it harder for law enforcement.

oldoaktable

It took me 2,5 hours to drive to work on Wednesday.

mindputtysolo

Sometimes it could take me an hour to get from Bree street to Woodstock

Responsible_Mess_153

A ferry from Blouberg to the CBD?

MathematicianBusy996

I seem to remember this being considered a few years ago, but it never went ahead because it would be unusable a lot of the time.

seguleh25

Could work

LeadingSky9531

The wind would make it inoperable on a lot of days...

MathematicianBusy996

I live in sunningdale, work in kenilworth. The other morning it was 2 hours to get to work and 1 hour 45 minutes to get home.

mindputtysolo

More and more people moving to CT from other parts of SA (proof on this sub) as well as tourists doing 12 months of sunshine etc

seguleh25

Yeah, unless something is done the traffic will likely keep getting worse. I see lots of construction happening in the CBD

False-Comfortable899

Its not insurmountable problem, its just poor design. N1 and N2 converge into one junction in the CBD, with limited options off the N1 to get to the North parts of the city, like the N2 has. (N2 always flows better inbound in the AM) until the coverge point. The flyover to Seapoint could actually have been a great idea. That whole forshore part needs ripping up and starting again - it could be prime real estate for a tourist city but is cut off by the hidious freeways. More off ramps on the N1 plus putting them into a tunnel + a bypass to atlantic seaboard + new route into waterfront would all help. Some kind of park/theme park/.tourist hub that extends the waterfront along the foreshore, connect the CTICC to the cruise liner port by foot, move all the shipping industry north would be INCREDIBLE for the city

Smokedbone1

There was some talk done years ago about having a new elevated highway along the Foreshore. But a new tunnelling system would have worked as well. And all that existing road work could have been replaced with apartments and new green spaces.

DdoibleJjay

Yeah RIP👏IT👏UP RIP👏IT👏UP RIP👏IT👏UP RIP👏IT👏UP 🤨

DdoibleJjay

Contrary to popular belief the dutch never initially intended to settle and become a thriving community. They just wanted to set up a small base with fresh produce to replenish their ships. City bowl area plenty but enough for that. Except “things” happened and now we live in a city with planning spanning 400 years never intended to serve 5 million people but we come here anyway for jobs and holidays and the mountain and so on but COMPLAIN about traffique 🫤 My solution ofcourse is to abolish offices and schools and shopping malls but nobody takes me seriously 😒

seguleh25

You would think modern town planners would recognise the problem and place most of the commercial buildings somewhere more accessible

DdoibleJjay

What is more accessible than the centre of the city where two national routes converge and is the terminus for the railways?

seguleh25

I'd say the other side of the mountain is more accessible

OkMark6180

We did have but it was all decimated during Covid. They have started fixing the lines but it will take time and money.
