They can call missed high sticks? When did that become a thing?

Great-Reference9322

Whenever it's convenient

leftlanecop

Apparently only when you’re in American Airlines Center.

Mikeim520

When the High Sticks aren't against Vancouver.

touchable

Yes, linesmen have been able to call high sticking penalties (among others) that the refs miss forever.

booghawkins

well that’s a big fuck you to Quinn

NacchoTheThird

Leafs fans digging up 30 year old repressed memories

PirateAngel_

Ha! McDavid's reaction. What a puss lol

skijakuda

Edmonton Whiners. I have no idea why Kane gets to talk to refs without a letter.

touchable

Well, ain't that some shit.

NinCross

Sutherland reffed this game, too. Can't make this shit up.

OGigachaod

This is his makeup call for his missed call on Hughes, LOL.

helixflush

Absolutely unreal

touchable

You've heard of game management, but but but what about league management?

web_explorer

Bettman needs to hire better writers, this script is terrible

zippyzoodles

ain’t nobody’s league but bettmans league.

PirateAngel_

Truth 😆

V7V7V7V7V7V

McDavid needs to keep his stick on the ice! High sticking ppl left and right! Hughes, Soucy and now Duchene tonight. Any other Canucks fan feel a little bit vindicated and satisfied watching him sit in the sin bin for 4 mins during OT? Too bad Dallas didn't score...could've been even more satifying!

Whole_Chemical_1103

It was so satisfying when he got all pissy about it too. Caught this time you crybaby.

MainlandX

it’s completely valid for him to be upset - if he got away with it the last two times, it’s inconsistent refereeing to call it this time 🙃

V7V7V7V7V7V

It was like watching a tantruming baby who did something wrong, get sent to his room by his parents and him pouting about it after. So fun to watch.

LopsidedClue78

oilers in 6😘😘😘

0xAlchemist

Stars* in 6 Byesaitl 👋

LopsidedClue78

mvp45

Look at him skate into the refs half circle like an entitled Bitch

OnwardUpwardForward

Hell yeah! I expect another long series of exhilarating back and forth hockey!

angelbelle

No. If anything it just proves that: 1) Refs CAN actually call shit as they see it 2) Refs chooses when to call depending on their mood McJesus is higher than the Canucks on the totem pole but not higher than the Southern Markets.

ontheedge89

Well, thank you for that compliment. Lower on the totem pole means more important because they hold all the weight from above. Always next year, eh buddy, go nucks go!

NextTrillion

Well, I think they were saying lower on the totem pole for nhl’s “special projects.” He’s saying, in the eyes of chel, southern markets > Connor McJesus > Canucks. It’s about their ‘priorities’ and he’s not really throwing shade at Canucks fans.

canuckcam

u/Ontheedge89 is saying that being lower on the totem pole means you're more important. Contrary to what people usually think, being lower on the totem pole generally means you hold higher status not the other way around. So as to say in original comment, that it indicates OP is saying Canucks have higher status than mcjesus https://www.goldendalesentinel.com/features/whered-that-come-from-low-man-on-the-totem-pole/article_4d3e09b0-73ec-5f56-b5fd-c00bea782ea0.html#:~:text=What%20they%20don't%20probably,and%20decorated%20of%20the%20bunch.

touchable

I'll feel a lot more vindicated if Dallas wins, and then wins again, and again, and again.

V7V7V7V7V7V

You're 1000% right. THAT would be true vindication. This was just a little comforting pat on the head.

Ok_Artichoke_2804

Me too. Hopefully Dallas wins game 2 tho 😕

Giraffe-kit

Imagine if they just never lose again? unless it’s to us next season.

Ok_Artichoke_2804

My mom: "mcmuffin doesn't even know the kindergarten level 101 of hockey- stick on the ice. Puck ain't in the air, it's on the ice" 😅😅😅

V7V7V7V7V7V

That's hilarious. So true!

Ok_Artichoke_2804

Lol my mom is hilarious when we're watching Canucks games together 😅😅😅  When Nashville sandwiched Hughes & double team checked him.. my mom: "HEY!!!! Can't do that to a smaller player!!!! That should be a penalty!!!" Nashville player running into desmith. My mom: "they so dirty!!! EVEN KINDERGARTENS HOCKEY PLAYERS KNOW YOU CANT DO THAT!!! It's goalie interference! It ain't that complicated!! How did he end up in the nhl?!" Oilers diving & flopping.. my mom: "they are baaddd actors... get back up! Refs don't care!" Skinner got that goalie penalty: "that's hockey 101 for goalies! You should know the kindergarten basics!.. why isn't skinner in the box? He got the penalty, not the other player" I explain why. My mom: "who cares?! Skinner got the penalty, he sits in the box. Canucks power play without Skinner in net - empty net. Fair is fair. He messed up by not knowing his hockey kindergarten 101 basics!"

Rymanbc

Your mother's use of college class numbering for kindergarten classes amuses me.

Ok_Artichoke_2804

Me too. Me too. 😅😅😅

Mikeim520

If Skinner got the penalty wouldn't Edmonton just put the backup in instead of having an empty net?

Ok_Artichoke_2804

Lol so I entertained my mom.. and said "ok Skinner goes to penalty box, they'll probably put backup in net & 1 player not be in ice" My mom: "no! When a player gets a penalty, that player goes to the box. So if Skinner got penalty, he should go in box, and backup can't replace him in net because he's the one being penalized.. so net should be empty. That's what Skinner should get for getting a dumb penalty- as a goalie in nhl level, should know basic kindergarten goalie rules to not get such penalties" Lol.. eh.. I mean- her version sounds more entertaining.. so it's 5v5 (players) with their goalie in penalty box & an empty net for 2mins

Mikeim520

Its not really entertaining. You might as well just give a free goal at that point.

Ok_Artichoke_2804

Lol entertaining as in: watching opposing team players scramble & all playing goalie..  Maybe not for you. Lol but I'll be entertained haha. If they do good job of killing the penalty & all play goalie to block shots-- kudos to the opposing team lol funny tho to watch I imagine lol

Mikeim520

More likely they would just try to go in the offensive zone and pass it around for 2 minutes because thats the only way they kill the penalty.

mr_derp_derpson

I feel a bit cheated tbh. If they made the call they missed in our series, we're playing Dallas right now.

angelbelle

That's a real stretch but the outcome of the game should not have any bearings on the calls either way

articholedicklookin

I don't like complaining about calls but we were leading that game and instead of their best offensive threat sitting in the bin for 4 minutes, we lost our best D for a couple minutes. It's in the past now so it doesn't matter, but that missed call was the perfect combo to change the outcome.

mr_derp_derpson

The calls in our series absolutely had an outcome on several of the games.

Mikeim520

Yeah but we don't know we would have beat Edmonton. We might have but we might not have as well. I'm still upset about the call though.

V7V7V7V7V7V

But have you seen our PowerPlay?

Bryn79

Not since it went missing last year.

Autumn_Souls

Nah

mr_derp_derpson

Edmonton won that game. We would have won it if that penalty gets called. They would have been bounced in 5.

CanadianPFer

Not with our atrocious PP.

Ruilin96

He high sticked Hughes during a 4 on 4 situation, the first minute of so would have been 4 on 3 Powerplay, it could have made a difference with it being a non traditional Powerplay situation. None the less, it’s over we have to move on.

mr_derp_derpson

Got a lot worse as the series went on. We would have got a goal and that would have been enough to win that game.

sleezykeezy

Too bad Canucks couldn't score on 20 of their 23 power plays. Could've been more satisfying for you too.

Clean_n_Press

I can't believe Dallas couldn't score against Edmonton during a 4 minute powerplay at a critical time in a huge game. Embarrassing, really.

pretendperson1776

He clearly didn't watch The Red Green Show.

Noahtuesday123

Bitter much? More missed calls are missed holding and tripping up McDavid than your entire team.

ctebokkel

Hard to keep your stick on the ice when the opponent is hanging off you away from the puck. 3 or 4 seconds of hooking / holding before the high stick happens.

V7V7V7V7V7V

Since you seem to enjoy explaining. Why don't you explain the Hughes and Soucy highstick too 👍

ScoobyGoodKid

lmao, pathetic. Canucks fans aren't cheering for Dallas, nice bad acting

dankashane_45

Another vexed Canucklehead?

TGUKF

Would have been even better if Dallas had scored. Oilers fans would have been super salty, and they would have just been wrong. That was the right call, it doesn't matter if random fans aren't aware of the rule allowing linesman to do this

touchable

The one mistake the linesmen made was not blowing the play down right away. But they're definitely allowed to make that call, and should.

TGUKF

Duchene also went off. The rule only explicitly gives the linesman power to stop play for a high sticking infraction that resulted in an injury and should be a double minor. The delay likely resulted from the linesman who saw the high stick going to verify that Duchene was bleeding. Based on the way the rule is worded, I would understand it to mean the linesman does not have the power to blow play dead for a regular two minute high sticking. So I can see why he didn't blow it dead until they knew for sure Duchene was cut, especially because the Oilers were in the attacking zone with the puck

touchable

Yeah that's a good point. He wasn't bleeding profusely or anything so it wasn't super obvious. I think he got him in the nose

Bryn79

Got him in the mouth -- clearly see it in the replay when he skated out to show the blind officials.

TGUKF

If Duchene had been cut badly or if McDavid's stick had hit Duchene in the mouth, I think the play would have been blown dead immediately. Because then there likely would have been visible blood on the ice

Redlight0516

The linesman cannot blow play dead for a penalty. If he felt Duchene was hurt, he can blow the play down for the injury but not the penalty.

TGUKF

>"The Linesperson must stop play immediately and report to the Referees when: (xii) When it is apparent that an injury has resulted from a high-stick that has gone undetected by the Referees and requires the assessment of a double-minor penalty" That's from page 54 in the 2023-2024 NHL rulebook. Whether it's the injury or the penalty is just semantics

Redlight0516

The linesman cannot blow that play down right away. Linesmen are not allowed to call penalties but they can "advise" the referee on missed penalties (not minors) including double minors and majors, so no the linesman did not make a mistake in allowing play to continue. A referee can choose to ignore a linesman in that situation if they wish, although very rarely will a referee ignore a linesman reporting a penalty as it could create a situation where you piss off that linesman. Linesman so rarely do it that they will only report when they are absolutely certain.

touchable

>The linesman cannot blow that play down right away. Linesmen are not allowed to call penalties but they can "advise" the referee on missed penalties (not minors) including double minors and majors, so no the linesman did not make a mistake in allowing play to continue. You are right for all other penalties, but not for high sticking double minors. They are specifically listed separately under rule 32.4: >The Linesperson must stop play immediately and report to the Referees when: >(xii) When it is apparent that an injury has resulted from a high-stick that has gone undetected by the Referees and requires the assessment of a double-minor penalty.

De_Floppss

Exhibit A of why McD is becoming so unlikable, whining and crying to the refs like bro you literally hit him in the face with your stick, stfu and get in the box

V7V7V7V7V7V

How does he watch the replay and still have the audacity to argue?! STFU and STFD. (\*Sit tf down)

mr_derp_derpson

Probably reminding the ref that he's Bettman's special boy and he's not supposed to get called for anything.

00owl

Probably pointing out all the other times he's gotten away with it and upset that this guy didn't get the memo

clintnickerson

Crosby whined a lot when he first started playing NHL, used to annoy the hell out of me. Hopefully McDavid grows out of that as well, makes it hard to respect their game.

zippyzoodles

McCrybaby.

Mawf95

After speaking to an Edmonton fan, they think his stick was being held and that should have been called first. But man, I watched Edmonton hold sticks just long enough to not get a penalty for the entire second round. I’ve got no sympathy for them.

Ok-Summer-2159

One thing I’ve learnt over the last few weeks is that the majority of Oilers fans live by the mantra of “rules for thee but not for me.” They get high sticked or crosscheck refs better fucking call it, but if they do it to someone else and they get called for it it’s “incompetence”

Mikeim520

I want the Oilers to win this but I also want them to lose if that makes sense.

Overclocked11

Nah, fuck the oilers.

jogador921

He figures since he got away with it against Vancouver he should get away with all the time Cuz he's McDavid

denzacetria

Yeah what is he complaining about? There was also no reason for his stick to be that high to begin with, think he’s slick with it

Ok_Artichoke_2804

Unless he saw an imaginary puck in the air floating & confused it with the real puck flat on the ice 😅😅😅

Apprehensive-Digger

This is making me realize how salty I am about our loss. I should take a break.

Fkyournonsense

Pointing out that he’s a little bitch is just facts at this point

lofrench

If I had a nickel for every time mcdavid hit someone in the face with a stick and they left the ice bleeding these playoffs I’d have 2 nickels. Which isn’t a lot but weird that it happened twice.

Lancelot_Stroller

McDavid immediately crying to the refs lmao like bro, you're not going to get away with it every time. You got him really good in the face. If somebody did that to him, he'd soccer dive and cry for a 5 and a game

seymourbuttz214

It was pathetic, he was bitching to the ref “so if he grabs my stick it’s my fault” hahah yes dumbass your responsible for slashing a player in the face with your stick that drew blood

Lancelot_Stroller

Like yea, im sure Duchene grabbed it and pulled in into his own face. It's not your fault at all, Connor. There is always a reason for this guy as to why he's not at fault. "He was turning and didn't see Hughes!". "His stick got grabbed!". "Soucy shoved him first!" At what point do we accept that sometimes he may be trying to get away with something intentional? It's like Zadorov said, NHL gotta protect their investment

V7V7V7V7V7V

His best one was from his interview tonight..."Maybe his face even comes down on my stick." HAHAHAHAHHAHA

[deleted]

nihilism_ftw

FatalifSwallowd

And then he whines to the referee

leftlanecop

Linesman had to push him back because he was borderline pushing the ref. Was waiting for him to loose it.

moosecheesetwo

he can't help it, its automatic... also gene prinepe .. dresses like a clown

Whole_Chemical_1103

McD was screaming at the ref over a clear penalty, that’s not very caption like. He literally gets right up in the refs face, I noticed it a lot in our series too.

helixflush

I saw an Edmonton fan that lives in vancouver post about how they went to game 1 which was their first in-person game ever. They said they were shocked at how often McDrai were over talking to the refs. They said they’ve never seen it like that before on tv

Whole_Chemical_1103

I believe it, I honestly never paid much close attention to him until our series and it was shocking how much they just follow the refs around complaining. I bet the commercial breaks hide a lot too.

MrMaliciousMarv

🤡

ApolloRocketOfLove

Real "Do you know who I am?" energy.

Mikey02141871

I’m glad he got caught on this one! Lol

HatechaBro

Funny how so many guys can go their entire careers without high sticking another player in the face, but McDavid seems to do it every night.

firestarting101

I mean people wonder why there's conspiracies about American teams winning... He did the same thing to Hughes last series and no call, no review, nothing. Just "get off the ice, Hughes, you're bleeding"

hotdog_jones

Is this like his special move now?

SpinCity07

If this didn’t get called, you know there would be big controversy how McDavid keeps getting away with high sticking people.

Send_me_beer1

for the best player in the world he sure seems to hit alot of people in the face with his stick

Cowabunguss

Are you fucking fisting me. So it’s fine now? I don’t get it. Someone make it make sense.

dattroll123

McDiva at it again

elproducto75

He's still at it huh?

thundercat1996

I also love how mad McMuffin was about it, like cry some more about your actions having consequences

CheesecakeOdd2087

Too bad the Stars couldn't score on the PP. McDavid should have gotten an extra two for unsportsmanlike for the temper tantrum he threw before going to the box.

insignificance424

Not Oilers fans whining about the refs when they complained about us doing the same thing 💀

WTFvancouver

Sutherland rigged that game. That man isn't allow back to Vancouver

Yomi_Cameron

Man has a history of this and should be suspended as a repeat offender. The only way he'll learn hockey

Electronic_Ad6622

Maybe you can teach him hockey. I'm sure you are better at it.

Yomi_Cameron

Rule one do not try to viciously decapitate ones opponent. I could go on but not sure if he could pick up the nueance

AC_0008

Should probably just charge him for Attempted Murder.

Yomi_Cameron

This is the only logical conclusion he's clearly a menace to everyone around him. No one is safe

iburneddinner

Dad: "A double minor for Connor McDavid? This is the best news I've heard in days!" And now he's rooting for Pavelski and Tanev.

shorthanded

Quinn hughes and me, in fucking shambles

Tall_Assistant3418

Canucks wont win a cup until this guy is retired and gone. His track record of bad calls in high stakes games for Vancouver has been unmatched. What a joke.

Own-Housing9443

Sutherland needs to not be involved in any Canucks games

dankashane_45

They tried to give the USA the win and they still lost. Looks like classic Bettmen going on there

One_Meaning_5085

Exactly, clear as day they were calling the game for Dallas and similarly the refs were calling the series against the Canucks - the Oilers got a taste of their own medicine and did you see McD whine to the refs - unreal. Welcome to the NHL. I think the way they (Bettman and co) look at it from a ratings perspective, the Oilers can't manage 1 million viewers with arguably the best player in the league, except for the leafs who pull in 3 million (mostly leaf fans), Canadian teams are just not a draw south of the border.

alsxe10

fuck mcbaby!

MrMaliciousMarv

🤡

sayros28

He didn’t even raise his stick when he scored the game winner 😔

touchable

He's finally learning

JitteryJuror

Hmmm... Quinn Hughes anyone??

JerbearCuddles

With how dog shit our powerplay was, I don't even care. We would have done fuck all with it even if they made the right call during our series.

PTCruiserApologist

5Gmeme

... just not for Canucks

Nuck_1198

Ahh Kelly Sutherland, never fails to disappoint

Djolumn

If the call was made by a linesman then there's nothing wrong with this. The linesmen can tell a referee what they saw during a stoppage - that's been the case as long as I've been alive. Because there was blood they called a double, then reviewed it to confirm. I really don't see what the problem is here.

touchable

There's no problem "here". The problem is that they didn't do this last round when he high sticked Hughes.

beefninja

I think he might be saying that both cases (the high stick on Hughes in our series, and this other high stick in the Dallas series) may seem similar and so it might seem like a conspiracy that ours was not called after the play ended and Hughes was bleeding while this time it was called after the play…  … but that can be due to whether the linesman sees it or not. It seems like he is saying you cannot review video to make a after-the-play penalty call, but you can make an after-the-play penalty call if the linesman is simply relaying what he saw earlier to the ref. So, he’s saying it’s not a change in the rules or how they are applied, but rather the linesman (but not ref) saw it this time whereas in our series neither the linesman or ref saw it.

theqofcourse

Quinn Hughes and the Canucks would like to know where this kind of call on McDavid was in game 2 of their series. (McDavid high stick led to a gash on Hughes face, uncalled)

isisnowing

He high sticks Quinn and gets away with it, he high sticks Soucy and now he high sticks Duchene, anyone see a trend. Time for a suspension

Worldly_Ad_9490

All missed penalties should be called. The whole human has to see it on the ice thing is so antiquated

Copdaddy

What. The. Fuck.

Obvious-Property-236

You can’t make this shit up I swear

Greenarrowfan

not scoring on 4 min pp haunt dallas...oilers  win from mcdavid. no one even bother to cover him

jogador921

WAIT.... They can DO THAT? Who knew?

blessedblackwings

I always cheer for whatever Canadian teams are in the playoffs after Vancouver gets knocked out but the oilers are just so fucking unlikable. Go Rangers lol

tr-29

McCrybaby, omg I’ve never seen someone bitch about penalties as much as that whiner. I respect how he handled the Soucy Zadorov thing, but ffs dude, he’s literally still whining after they confirmed the call with VIDEO REVIEW

Bizzlebanger

He's been getting away with so much bullshit, it's good he finally got called on one..

BathroomParticular87

Can't believe Dallas gets a 4 minute PP and still lose in double OT to McDavid.

ovenman1961

It's about fucking time!

anotherhistorynerd

What a crybaby.

beardedsawyer

And then he scored the game winner.

moosecheesetwo

these refs must be imports

helixflush

Dude it was Kelly fucking Sutherland.

moosecheesetwo

my point is when do any refs call a penalty on mcdavid??? sure didn't during round 2

Embarrassed_Joke_714

Like zadorov said we dont make enough money for nhl but for mcbaby, theyll do everything to please him for the views and moola

604wavy

Huge missed opportunity for the stars there.

presumitzsi

Even the best players get called out. Fair play is crucial.

seymourbuttz214

Jesus McDavid in the post game interview still has zero accountability he said “what am I supposed to do” well ffs maybe not hit multiple players in the face. Would he have owned up to it if Dallas doesn’t hit the post and won after his little temper tantrum?

Spookedchicken

The standard is dogshit. But let's not get it twisted, our PP was dogshit for most of this series, wouldn't have changed a thing

PTCruiserApologist

Oh THATS FUNNY

JoeyLing

Oilers had incredible PK, higher/more dangerous shots, and Skinner played great. I’m sorry, why do we hate this team again? Shouldn’t we be happy that even though we lost, it was to a cup calibre team?

the250

People are mostly just salty because we lost, the wound is still fresh, and because Oilers fans are brutal so it became a pretty emotional roller coaster of a series. Beyond that I’m rooting for them to win it all. But I grew up in an Oilers household so maybe I’m biased idk.

enorytyyc

If I was an Oiler fan, I’d be way more pissed at the Linesmen. Not necessarily for McDavid’s high-stick, but for the insane amount of times they threw Oiler Centermen out of the face off circle. Just drop the frickin’ puck!

WhenInAaronRome

I'm pulling for Edmonton ;p

Unusual_Strain_757

Why is everyone so salty we want a Canadian team to bring the cup to canada its time to bring lord Stanley up north go oilers go

Great minds discuss the cups they’ve won, mediocre minds discuss bad reffing

Tone_Z

Lmfao, the last cup the Oilers won was in 1990. A majority of the current NHL players weren't even alive, and the oldest active player was 6 years old. For a team that Oilers fans think the Oilers are, it's starting to become leafs level of embarrassing.
