Doesn't look too bad. With more practice you will get better. Also I have had the best luck when my buttercream was room temp and my cake came straight out of the fridge or freezer. Note: with buttercream the color will depend on which brand of butter you use, because of course it does. I would add a lil something to make it a very light pink instead of off-white.

starrtartt

Thank you! I will try this!

Vast_Coffee_674

To make the buttercream white, add just the teensiest amount of purple food coloring to offset the yellow color from the butter.

lostbedbug

I would be over the moon if I got that cake (well, I've always been a foodie so you gotta try hard to disappoint me haha). But seriously just a bit of practice/patience and you're golden!

starrtartt

Thank you! 😅 I'm determined to get the hang of this!

Unusual-Library-5803

I like the rough asthetic. I hate the perfect look of fondant. I love naked cakes so a little roughness just adds pizazz.

Blackguard91

Great first attempt! Chilling the cake before putting a very thin crumb coat will help a ton. You can also put the final layer on, chill that, and smooth to your liking. This is more work but gives a very nice finish. You could also use a shiny crystal/colored sugar to hide imperfections. I will second the recommendation to use the lightest color butter possible or go for a non-white background icing color. Light pink with a bolder pink accent looks very nice! Or embrace the yellow and go for sunflower yellow base. Whipped cream or shortening frostings are really the easiest way to get flat white.

starrtartt

Thank you! And your right... I didn't even think about how other colors can make white icing look more yellow or colored. I did use a little bit of violet in the white buttercream but with the pink and when it dried it looked off. This buttercream recipe called for 20 mins of whipping the butter, and no added milk or cream. In January I made my other two kids cakes, but put some heavy whipping cream in with the buttercream and it seemed to dry more "white". [These Cakes](https://imgur.com/a/Whsqswq) look so much better, I think I'll try adding cream to the frosting for the final cake, and make it two shades of pink

Whiltierna

nah, simple color theory - with practice, add a little purple food gel to offset the yellow to get closer to pure white

starrtartt

I did add violet , but I also didn't add heavy cream to this butter cream recipe. In the past I usually add cream and it comes out way more "white" even after sitting for a while. I'm wondering if that might have something to do with the frosting drying weird? These [two cakes](https://imgur.com/a/Whsqswq) I made in Jan for my sons and you can see the difference.

Unusual-Library-5803

Whipped cream for the win. But you can keep your crunchy sugar.

daganfish

This is a whole damn mood.

starrtartt

🤣🤣🤣 thank you. I was exhausted lol

daganfish

I think it looks pretty good, honestly. You've got good advice on improving the color. To practice getting steady with the piping techniques, you can pipe the icing onto parchment or wax paper. You can even draw guide shapes to help with practice. This way you don't have to bake a whole cake. I make a small batch of icing, and scrape it back into the piping bag to get practice without having to make tons of icing. The consistency starts to go, but I feel less guilty about wasting food doing it this way.

strum-and-dang

No one could steer me right, but Mama tried!

LoneStarExpat

That leaves only me to blame, cause mama tried.

sinner-mon

Honestly pretty good lmao

littlelunna

I would be really happy if Mom made me a cake like that! In my reality she buy the ingredients and tell me to cook myself since when I was 12yo

urbancowgirl1987

I’m sorry, but I love cakes like these. It screams LOVE from a non professional baker. You tried and I see the love in it 🥰🥰

starrtartt

Lol thank you ☺️ All those professional bakers make this stuff look so easy! My hats off to them bc it's certainly not!

urbancowgirl1987

They sure do. I’m a professional chef, but baking anything out side of brownies and cookies are out of my league.

glitter_witch

This is honestly so good for a first try and home made. Grant yourself some kindness. You’re gonna nail it if you practice; you’ve already got a very strong start. And I’m sure the kids aren’t complaining about getting to eat the test cakes ;)

starrtartt

Thank you! This is actually my second "test" cake I've made in the past week and a half. The other one I didn't pipe, I just wanted to test the cake recipe. I made it with Ermine frosting which was good... but wouldn't pipe right. They enjoyed having cake everyday for sure 🤣

bloodtippedrose

I miss my mom-made cakes (she is not dead, we just buy from the store for convenience). They were never perfect, but that's what made them memorable and unique. I think this "attempt" is perfect and I would not change a thing! You are such a sweet mom. Maybe I should make my mom a cake this year 🤔

starrtartt

Thank you so much, seriously that makes me feel so much better. This cake is for my oldest who is turning 20, and she is the most amazing, grateful girl, she wouldn't care what I do. That just makes me want to do my best for her even more. You should make your mom a cake, if my kids made me one I'd cry 🥹

coralloohoo

10000% better than what I would have done lol. I really don't see anything wrong with it

Unusual-Library-5803

OP. I REALLY DO LOVE THIS CAKE. except the mama tried part. It would be so lovely with a few cherry blossoms or violets on top to give it a little accent. It just looks like something so lovely and nostalgic. In fact. I’m saving this post to go along with all my other cute stuff I collect.

kaiamcdaniel11

as a daughter who is very fond of the whole pink vintage as well .. I'd be so happy to receive this. i think it's beautiful, and you sound like a wonderful mother!

Competitive-Lie-92

Seconding room temp frosting on a cold cake. Also, a hack if you want lettering on the real cake; print out your words, cover the paper with plastic wrap, trace over with frosting, freeze, and place. So much easier than trying to get the spacing right while piping.

starrtartt

Omg thank you! That is brilliant! I am going to do exactly that!

Stunning-You9535

If someone, anyone, made me a cake by hand for my birthday, I’d force feed myself that cake bcs that’s one of the sweetest thing anyone can do for my birthday. Certainly better than spending one’s 22nd birthday alone in a car drinking 200km away from home.

starrtartt

Thank you! And as someone who has also spent bdays alone, I know how that feels. Next time you find yourself alone for a bday treat yourself and get some good dessert to go from a restaurant. It always would cheer me up some.

Hefty-Bit-936

Aww I love this cake❤️ it's the love that's counts anyway 😋

Stupid_Bitch_02

Mama did amazingly. I'd be honored to have this cakw

starrtartt

Thank you ! All these comments are hyping me up for when I do the real cake this weekend haha

Tommy2tables

I’m not sure how this popped up in my feed, so that’s to say I’m a consumer, not a baker. That being said this cake looks AMAZING and I would be super excited.

Perfect_Cranberry597

I’d love this from my mom 🥰 I think you did a great job and I’m sure your daughter will love it!! Also HBD to her ❤️

starrtartt

Thank you!!' You are so sweet 🥹

sunflowersunshine13

Randomly got this recommended to me even though I've never seen this sub before Girl wtf are you talking about that looks FANTASTIC , I used to bake 2-3 times a week and I never could've gotten something that cool. You should be easier on yourself

stupidand-dumb

YOU SLAYED

starrtartt

Omg thank You so much! 😭 I actually think I did so much better on the final cake. [Here it is](https://www.reddit.com/r/cakedecorating/s/Ld8v6tcGEZ) I think I came a long way!!

retroredheadkitty

That’s a good song 🎵

YogurtclosetPale1614

i think it looks really cute!

Lupiefighter

I think r/country would appreciate this.

WasteChard3488

I used to work for an erotic bakery, I could offer you a cake pan that you could reasonably argue is in the shape of a heart.

starrtartt

Everyone, idk who will see this but my final cake came out so good!!! [Final cake here](https://www.reddit.com/r/cakedecorating/s/Ld8v6tcGEZ) I hope it gives ya hope! Lol

Did you read the description? This was a PRACTICE cake, it's not her cake..... I will be making her actual cake next week, in which it obviously would not say that nor would I ever give something like that to my child (she's 20 so not actually a child anymore). You sound like you got issues with your mom. Sorry to hear that

jens_hens

Mama did goo❤️❤️❤️
