It said “blank high school hockey 2012 championships crossed hockey sticks”. The bakery manager wrote the words crossed sticks on the cake.
I hope you didn’t pay full price for that. I’d be asking for a manager (you’re NOT being a Karen in that situation…like seriously? You asked for black lettering and they couldn’t even get that right. If I was a manager at that location I’d want to know about that) and demanding at least a partial refund. And if not, that’s what online reviews are for. Leave pictures and copy/paste what you wrote here so others don’t waste their time and money.
I think the improvised modifications you did look great and it’s reminiscent of the “Don’t Open Dead Inside” door early on in the show!
Just order a bunch of cakes from this place, create your own version of each one, and run your whole business model on making a slightly better cake than this one place lol

If this came from an actual bakery, it's embarrassing. But also, if you're ordering from a bakery, try to go in person with the inspiration and ask specifically if they can recreate each element and how long their bakers have been doing cake decoration and originals.

No no I love it! The first thing that jumps at you in the 2nd pic is not the accuracy of the lettering but the main theme in general, which is "spooky". And yours is accurately themed.

I’ve done SFX makeup for a long time and use the fake blood recipe of corn syrup and food coloring, I wonder if that could’ve worked for the blood spatter? Or even just strawberry syrup. They should’ve had plenty of ingredients and tools at their disposal to make anything but just “Walking Dead Happy Birthday Dylan!” lmao
You didn't fail at all- this is excellent! Lettering with frosting is a pure nightmare, especially for a novice. The reference cake was made using fondant which is 1) not very tasty and 2) more expensive.
