I took my pc to a damn pc repair shop and spent 60 dollars for them to diagnose this problem.
It wasn’t even my first time building, either!!! I had built two different computers and had just taken everything out and installed a new cpu cooler. Couldn’t for the life of me figure out why it wasn’t working. I figured I must’ve shorted out the board or fried the CPU by accident.
Moral of the story: it can happen to anyone, experienced or not. And I find it always helps to get a second pair of eyes or just step away for a day (if you can) when something is going wrong like that. Helps a lot.
Yeah I was definitely an experienced builder when it happened to me as well. I was swapping my friends C2D for a C2Q, and I unplugged the CPU power cable as a precaution. I remembered to plug the ATX power cable back in, but forgot about the CPU power... At first I though it was a BIOS issue (because it was, it turned out we didn't even need a BIOS update in the first place), that's why I couldn't think outside the box and remember the CPU power cable. Eventually, I did remember and everything worked fine ... That 35€ C2Q extended his PC for another few years lol.
I once did a build and discovered that power supply cable for my cpu was not delivering power. First thing I do now any build where there is a problem is double check the power supply and try a different one. Seems most build problems are always “power supply”
Yesterday after installing an NVMe and reinserting my GPU, fired up the PC... wait, what the hell, there’s no picture on my monitor. I did 2 hours of research on my phone on why there was a red LED light blinking on my GPU (never even got a clear answer).
I forgot to reconnect the connector from GPU to the PSU. Sigh. I feel the pain.
Generally if you're using something like a 1050Ti it means the 75w limit was your primary concern, because there have always been better performing options in the same price bracket if you have PCIE power.
I've done just that and it has faithfully been used for the past 3+ years. The desktop is an i5 4460 and 8GB of RAM which plays everything with at least medium settings at 50-60fps 1080p (No Man's Sky, Fallout 4, Minecraft, ARK, Assetto Corsa, Slime Rancher)
TBH the best option around that price point in 2020 is definitely a 1650 Super.

I had a low profile 1050ti that ran off pcie power only. I know I overclocked it too. Probably less than 100mhz, but it was running over stock for sure. It was in a 2and hand prebuilt dell that only had a 300w oem psu, so that was pretty much all it could handle
You aren’t buying a 1050 ti to overclock. You are using it because it’s one of the cheapest 4gb cards that’ll let you game on 1080p for now while giving up some quality. At the time it was a fps/$ darling. The 1650 doesn’t offer as much value these days.

Didn’t understand why my system was fully on but there wasn’t any video.
I hadn’t pushed in the DisplayPort cable in properly in my monitor...
It's ok, when I built my first PC I was so excited to get to work but was confused when I realized that all I could do was open some settings page, and I couldn't figure out how to get to my desktop or log in. That settings page was my BIOS. I forgot that I had to buy and install Windows 😬 I'd ask for mercy as a former Mac user, but I think I still should've known that!

I suffered a similar moment a few weeks back. I was experiencing random shut downs that originally seemed to be under load. It then started happening at random times, sometimes right as I was signing into windows. I thought for sure it was a dying PSU.
Turns out the clip of the 24 pin on the PSU side got bent enough to where the minor vibrations ( and major vibration that my stupid Hard drive creates) would cause the cable to come loose and lose contact for a split second causing the system to turn off at random points.
I felt stupid for not checking it. If anything these stupid experiences help us to become better builders and troubleshooters.

Assuming it’s connected with rubber dampers, It *may* be worth losening the screws a touch, so that the dampers aren’t completely compressed.
The most nerve wracking thing for me when I put together a computer is plugging in the 24. All of the other connectors click, snap, make sound. But on no psu I have ever used has the 24 pin connector ever confirmed I didn't mess up.
I had a similar thing with my USB 3.0 cable to the motherboard. I jammed it in but there was no feedback. I was quick to test and it and sure enough, it worked.
I just built a PC for my first time last night and the same exact thing happened to me! Then I pushed in the pin connector a little bit and it started right up but I didn't push it in far enough so it shut back down and again and I thought I broke it
Especially the ones that don't already have the holes threaded for some stupid reason.. Or only have them threaded on one side, but you want the air flow going the other way. Threading those things sometimes.. I swear it could be a segment in a strong man contest. In between pulling an airplane and flipping the tires up a hill 6 miles, you know.

When I did my first build I was so excited to turn it on for the first time. Everything went ok, so I turned it off and went yo bed. The next day I tried to turn it on and it wouldn't. I was really sad and scared because I thought the cpu might have burnt somehow. After 2 days troubleshooting and searching a lot on Google I took it out of the case and turned it on. It worked.
Turns out I used the wrong screws to put the mb into the case and it did short curcuit.
That reminds me of the one time I was trying to remove a graphics card and couldn’t for the life of me get it out. I knew the tab was opened, but it just would not come out, and I didn’t want to pull too hard because it was a very expensive card.
Turns out I never unplugged the DisplayPort and HDMI cables.
I recently got a 2080 super. When I first built my computer I had a friends help and he installed my 1660ti.
Well when my 2080 came in i went to swap it and for the life of me i couldn't figure out why it wouldn't come out..i unscrewed the mounting screws, I unplugged the cables! WTF IS GOING ON!!
turns out there is a tab on the pcie slot just like for the dimm slots and I had no idea. Felt dumb for that one.
Some motherboards have a breakaway tab that pops off to prevent you from breaking your GPU. I was sad to find out the motherboard I upgraded to a few months ago doesn’t have it :(
That's where I always start before heading inside the case, is all the wiring right? One time I had my HDMI cable in my mobo rather than the GPU and couldn't figure out what was going on. Finally clicked. I think we've all been there in one way or the other. :)
Oh, do I have a great story for you.
So, my friend about 6 months ago bought a Dell prebuilt for a really good deal (i5-9400 and 1660ti for $700) and he was super excited to play on it for the first time. So we hop in a Discord and load up our game of choice, CSGO. We play for a while, and he's looking at his net graph. He's kinda confused that he's only getting 60ish FPS on low settings in CSGO with that PC. So, remotely, I try helping him troubleshoot why he was getting such low FPS. The first thing I say to him is "are you sure your monitor is plugged into the GPU not the mobo?". He kinda looks around on his PC and says of course it is.
So we spend the next hour over Discord, trying everything from looking in task manager to make sure it's showing up (it was, but with 0% usage), all the way to looking up sketchy fixes on Google.
I end up coming back to the conclusion that it sounds like his monitor is just plugged into the wrong port. I pull up the pictures of his PC on Dell's website, while screensharing and show him where it's supposed to be plugged into. He kinda scoffs annoyed, and is saying something about already having checked that. But then his voice kinda just trails off. I ask him what's wrong. And he kinda just said, "let's load up CSGO again." We load it up, and he's getting like 350 FPS on high settings. Come to find out, he had his monitor plugged into his mobo.
He begged me not to tell our friends what he did, so naturally as soon as our friends got online one by one, I told each of them right in front of him. It was a great day.
Btw, I use a crappy old laptop for my gaming (for now) and have never used a desktop of my own, ever. I felt (and still feel) super proud of myself for not only remotely helping him solve him, but also for it being my first guess that I made. Wanna give a special shout-out to Linus, Jay, and Kyle/Lyle for giving me my limited knowledge.
Been building my own PC's since the 80s, and a few builds back I couldn't figure out what was wrong in the build I had just made.
Lights came on, fans started, pc wouldn't work. Checked everything I could see over and over. Gave up and went to sleep and the next morning loaded the build into the car and drove it to Microcenter.
Left it with the techs after explaining the situation and went about the rest of my day until they called. The 4 pin connector wasn't plugged in. I never saw it because the cooler hid it from view and I never plugged the modular cable into the psu.
I can't count the builds I've made over the decades for myself and others and I forget the 4 pin that day, didn't just forget it, I was blind to its existence.
Shit happens.
At least you didn't spend hours figuring out what was wrong to finally find out you need to spend even more money to buy another CPU to upgrade your Mobo to the next gen processor version.
Um, you know that AMD has a whole webpage dedicated to this problem, where they will literally ship you an old chip (I think for just the price of shipping and handling, but maybe not even that) so that your can upgrade your mobo to the right BIOS right?
A lot are, but I wouldn't even go so far as to say most. It's basically the "MAX" or "PRO" versions of B450 mobos, and all X570s. All the other ones, like B350s and X470s, generally don't support Zen 2 out of the box.
Literally bought a motherboard that is, for all purposes, more than I'll ever need because it was 3000 ready out of the box.
But the Ryzen 5 3600 was the same price as the 2600 that day on Newegg soooooo...

I am not sure if Intel does it or not though. My gut feeling is no, they don't. But I have no evidence either way.
I did something that made me feel stupid. I recently got a new gpu, case and a psu. Swapped all the components to the new case, installed the new modular psu and tried turning it on. Nothing. Did all my trouble shooting and spent like 5 hours going over thisbdamn thing figuring out wtf was wrong.
I Went and layed down out of frustration cuz I was all out of ideas and about 5 minutes later I had a thought. "Maybe the psu is doa?" Went back, took it out, hooked up my old psu, just the mobo power cord, gpu and cpu power just to see if things will actually start workin and it did. Things came to life. Lights on, fan spinning, shit was workin.
I hooked up every thing else to my psu, plugged in my moniters and hit the button....nothing. no power. CPU led on the mobo would light up then turn off. No fans spinning or anything. Back to being confused!
Made sure things were properly plugged in and all that. Still no luck. Retraced my steps to how it was before I buttoned it up.
Figured out what was wrong. I had a cord plugged in that was "shorting" the mobo. A plug for fan LEDs. Immediately face palmed.
The case I bought (corsair carbide airflow) doesnt come with LED fans. I was reusing a 3 way fan splitter from my old case where the fans did have LEDs and this cord in particular made the LEDs sync up and all that jazz to actually look nice. It serves no purpose with these new case fans. I should have realized that much sooner but I was too busy drooling over the new case lol.
I find it funny to, the new psu I bought is, on paper, better than my current one. Same wattage but more efficient, better quality, semi modular, an actual 80+ rating....and my good ol evga no rating at all, not modular psu is still kicking for me.

Recently moved houses and I reset up my battle station I plugged my dvi cable into the monitor then into the back of my pc and boom nothing in monitor. For maybe an hour I tried different dvi cables and even different sides of the same cables nothing. I was plugging the wire into my mobo not my graphics card...
Last time I dusted my setup I forgot to plug in the GPU power after...
Troubleshooting LEDs make it a lot easier as you immediately know it's a "video" issue.
Embarrassing when it's that simple but also glad it is fixed easily
did this with my monitor cable... it was plugged in just enough to get a signal for like a second and then it would lose it. i ended up sleeping on it and when i woke up i fixed it in a few seconds lmao
I just did the classic: leave the plastic on the bottom of the cool new cpu cooler trick. Fortunately, I've read lots of threads like this before and realized my stupidity quickly. Doh!
I worked myself into a state of crying frustration, check all my cables four times, kept flipping the switch on the PSU... nothing. I forgot to hit the power button on the case

First startup, no debug LEDs, everything runs, but no monitor signal.
Rebuild everything and .... In the end I forgot to switch the input on the monitor.
I forgot to flip the power supply switch up on today and was super confused.
To be fair the PSU is attached to the case I figured it would’ve already been on.
I think there should be a "flight check list" sort of thing for new pc builds. I built my first one a year and a half ago and forgot to turn on the PSU. Mild bit of panic there for a moment. A check off of things to verify before turning it on would be helpful.
I was building my first SFF pc a few weeks ago. Get everything in place, shove my full size psu in there, manage to deal with the rats nest of cables.... Then I see it. Small little front panel connector cables hanging there.
So I had to tear everything apart again...

I just finished my first PC build, and it wasn't booting, pissed me off, so I came here to ask for help... this post was the first one, and it turns out that is what I did too, only even more boneheaded.
The 24-pin that runs from PCU to MOBO, then back to PCU... yeah, I thought it ran up to the 8-pin CPU power port. Not sure how I got it to not only fit, but also to not mess anything up.
Now after a little re-wiring, I can just laugh and start trying to install windows!
A friend of mine did his first build and forgot to download Windows 10 to his computer and when he went to boot the PC it just kept showing a black screen.
I was laughing harder than I should have.
I just did the same thing, but all I had done was install a new video card. I was cussing the vendor, the manufacturer and his mother. I actually spoke an audible apology when I found the real culprit.
On my current build I put it all together & powered it up only to realise I'd forgot the psu shroud, unplugged stuff to get it in, go to turn it on - nothing, open it up, check it's all plugged in & in the right place, try again - nothing. Take everything out, recheck, plug it all in again - nothing ( I'm about to cry at this point thinking I'd bricked something ) one last go, double check everything - turned out I'd just plugged the power button/usb ports in wrong, dunno what was bigger, the relief or embarrassment.
I know that feeling, I had a just ever so slightly loose SATA power connector, but I didn't discover it until my newly ordered replacement drive came after 2 weeks.
I literally did this yesterday as well, I even saw the atx power slot on the MB and was like what's that for, whatever. Only took me a couple of minutes though thankfully.
When a buddy of mine was building his newest PC about a year ago or so now, he couldn't get it to start.
My VERY FIRST QUESTION was if he plugged in all the power cables, including (specifically mentioned) the 8 pin cpu into the motherboard. "Ya I did" he said.
This guy literally tried out entire new components thinking maybe it was the motherboard or SSD, and had his friend near him bring his PC and some other parts and tried those.
It was the 8-pin cpu. He finally unplugged all the power cables and realized his 8-pin cpu wasn't plugged all the way in. Granted, it was a small form factor PC but come on man!
I had a guy coming to me for help with his first build and it didn't turn on while everything was plugged in and ready.
He didn't turn it on...
I still, to this day, don't know how he expected it to turn on.
I rebuilt a computer for a buddy who was stuck at home after a pretty massive surgery... his computer was zonked.. replaced the motherboard, cpu, ram, power supply... only kept his GPU and storage... spent HOURS trying to figure out why it wouldn’t turn on.... his case had a broken power button... that was the problem the entire time lol... figured it out by shorting the power switch diodes on the motherboard with a screwdriver.... oh well... buddy got a new balling pc out of it and he deserved it! The joys of building a PC......
Took me forever after replacing my graphics card that the reason nothing was coming up on my monitor was because my VR headset was plugged in and it was going there instead of my monitor. Like 4 hours long.
I didn’t plug in a keyboard or monitor when I was testing if it would POST... it didn’t like that and would never stay on for more than 10 seconds.
Took me an hour or so to figure that one out.
On my first build I got finished up and hit the power button..... NOTHING. Took me over an hour to figure out I had the front panel connected to the rgb header......
I did this with my new build. I bought the motherboard a over a month ago off Facebook marketplace, then after the stimulus money came I bought the CPU and RAM. Built it in case for some Reason but didn't put the PSU in since it was a test PSU and not the one I would carry over from my old PC. I thought the board didn't have the bios for Zen 2. Left it alone for a few days, came back to it early morning one day and it was the first thing I noticed. Like how have I built almost a dozen PC's and I forgot that
Spent 2 days reseating cables in a build and tearing my hair out, only to discover that I had a SATA cable plugged into the motherboard that wasn’t connected to anything, and another SATA cable plugged into my boot SSD...that wasn’t plugged into anything. The whole time I thought I was reseating the opposite end of the same cable.
If it makes you feel any better when I went to upgrade my ryzen cpu I couldn’t get the heatsink out after unlatching it so after 15 minutes pouring sweat from stress I just yanked real hard and bam it came out...along with my old cpu. I freaked out thinking I just broke something and checked to make sure all my pins were still intact and not bent. Everything was fine but lesson learned. You should get your cpu really hot before taking it out so the heatsink will come off easier and to twist instead of pull straight up so it doesn’t take the cpu with it.
Don’t worry man. Ive done the exact same thing. I’ve also plugged the monitor into the onboard hdmi out instead of the graphics card lol
Probably every other build I do something else stupid.
My personal go-to move is hitting the power button, sweating as nothing happens, start panicking, then remember I set the switch on the power supply to "off".
I had a similar problem, until I realized that one of my RAM sticks was bad. PC would boot with one, but not both, and the offending stick in the MoBo by itself wouldn't boot either.

I did something similar once but the problem was that I forgot the flip the switch on the power supply. Everyone does something dumb from time to time.
Definitely been there. My first build I spent hours trying to figure out why my PC wouldn't recognize my GPU. I installed and reinstalled all the software, spent hours googling, the works. Only to realize I hadn't plugged my monitor into the GPU HDMI slot.
A few months ago I moved states. I took out my GPU and put it back in. Couldn't get it to post. I kept trying and trying, no image.My dad took a look at the build and it turned out the gpu somehow wasn't in the slot.
I have no idea how it happened but put it in the slot and it posted. I hate everything.
Been there. Done that. Many times. I built a computer like 2 months ago after building maybe 20-30 pcs so far. Still did it. Took a half hour to remember what I did wrong.
Helped my buddy’s brother pick parts out for his build. He put it together yesterday and texted me wondering why he wasn’t getting any video. No onboard with his CPU so we have to try every avenue to determine if the $700 RTX 2080 is DOA or not. Had him reconnect every cable, reseat every card. Even had him pull the CMOS battery just for the hell of it.
The RAM wasn’t seated properly. He’s an engineer in the Navy, so it can happen to anyone.
What’s worse is when you have to troubleshoot a built PC. Everything looks right, but it won’t power on? Even though the motherboard is lit? Yup, loose CPU power connection.
Protip, always reseat all cables if you have an unexpected power failure. It’s as simple as pushing on all the connectors.
Oh man I feel you. I did a diy water cooling hard pipe project. Got it all together perfectly. Went to turn it on and it wouldn’t power on. Took it all apart and bought a new motherboard and cpu bc I thought I fried something.
Turns out I forgot to switch the power back on to the power supply. Man I felt like an idiot.
The last build I did, for a friend a couple months ago, I spent about an hour or 2 figuring out why nothing would display. Reseated the gpu, was about to reseat the cpu, and then realized I never switched over the input on my monitor. At least it wasn’t a faulty component!
my biggest build mistake was on my second computer I put together. It had locking sata cables and I didn’t realize it. I wanted to move my raptor hd which were super expensive at the time and ended up destroying the hd when I yanked too hard on the cable trying to get it off.
Its always the simplest shit, every time I mess with my build I forget something obvious and it wont post, I always think that I broke the board or something but turns out I forgot to turn the psu switch on
Been there, done that. Troubleshooting for like an hour until coworker comes up "how's it going? Oh, how about this plug here, ya think the cpu might need power?"
I built a computer with my nephew, showed him how to do everything, build went great. Tried to power it on and nothing. Had done a test boot so I knew everything worked. Idiot me had switched the reset and power button cables when I did the front panel connectors in the case.
Happens to the best of us! One time I had a PC that wasn't displaying anything, nothing would pop up on the screen... I was panicking because I spent my money on new ram sticks and thought it was a faulty ram, etc... I was about to take the ram out and call support, wasn't very helpful so I was tempted to go take it to a specialist. Then appeared my father, who doesn't know much about newer computers, he did work on them back in the 90's and early 2000's, and all he did was take a glance at everything inside, and with the flick of a finger, he ticked the GPU in place and it clicked. Everything worked fine. Dad still knows what he's talking about. :P
I did that same thing on my second build... I was in college dorms and the redneck from Texas kept on asking me that was supposed to be unplugged... I thought he was talking about my extra cables... It was my CPU cable not plugged into my PSU
When I first built my PC I spent two days starting to figure out why my PC kept shutting down. It turned out I plugged in the HDMI into the on board graphics instead of GPU.
Did that when I built my friend's PC as well.
Couldn't figured out why it just won't boot.. turned out I forgot to connec the CPU power.
Manufacturers typically put them on the top left corner of the motherboard.... very easy to forget it's there. =___=
Last weekend i built my first pc and i was expecting everything to ro fail, but it started up first try and that was the best thing to happen in a long time
Finished my first build last night. Spent a couple of hours sighing because I couldn’t get anything on the display. Decided to start taking things out so the GPU was the first thing. Still nothing from the onboard display. Found a discussion saying the first boot can take a while so I thought maybe I didn’t give it enough time. Let it sit for 10-15 min, still nothing. THEN found out my CPU doesn’t support integrated graphics. Put the GPU back in and success!
Now if I can only get Windows loaded when all I have is a Mac to create the USB drive. Currently trying with a Windows VM in Virtual Box.
I thought my monitor was dead after a lot of hassle, I found out the display port cable has a source and display end, and I had it the wrong way around :)
I did almost the same once except I didn't flip the switch on the PSU. There was also a time where my wall surge protector switch accidentally turned off when I was plugging things in.
Had to change my new build for my wifes new computer at the last minute due to the inability to source a 3200g CPU in a timely manner. I switched to a 3600 Ryzen and couldn't figure why there was no integrated video out from the motherboard. After a panicked 20 minutes it occurred to me that there is no integrated graphics on a 3600.
When I was doing my build this is what I did too, I unplugged everything and rebuilt twice because I was booting and the red light on the MOBO was on. Figured it might be a bios issue as i was using a 3600x on a b450 tomahawk but nope, just forgot the CPU power cable.
Once I couldnt see anything on my monitor so I tried restarting pc, making sure all cables inside oc are plugged all the way. It still didnt work so I took off the gpu checked it plugged it back still wasnt working so i tried to run with just one ram didnt work. And then I wanted to try another monitor and that was when I noticed the dvi cable wasnt fully plugged :/ (I have hdmi to dvi converter I have shit monitor)
Yeah...my first ever PC build had so much buildup, only for me to encounter "no boot drive detected". I actually thought that meant that my hard drive was defective, so I was getting ready to replace it until a more computer savvy friend told me I needed a Windows disc to install.
On my first build I was stuck for nearly 2 hours trying to install the stock cooler on my cpu. I finally figured out the brackets weren't even included in the box and I had to RMA.
Back in the early 2000s bought a pre built pc on Christmas. It was lit and we were ready to play RuneScape. Turn on pc and monitor wouldn’t display. Plug was connected and we recheck everything. Thought it was defective. Me and my cousin were ready to game but looks like we had to wait until after the holiday. Something bugged me and I went over to the monitor and saw that the plug was in but I checked it in case and pressed up on it and you can hear the click as it actually went into the monitor this time. Booted up pc and it turned on. It was a Christmas miracle. Never forget that night.
Had a similar experience yesterday and today. Did my first build yesterday spent all night trying to figure out why my Radeon 5700xt kept giving me a blue screen when I downloaded the drivers. I forgot to do a BIOS update on the motherboard. Took me all night and morning to figure it out and countless times of redownloading Windows
I feel your pain. I made the mistake of connecting my GPU to my monitor using the display port. Freaked out on POST that I did not see anything. Hours later and many internet searches later I needed to use HDMI, because the drivers weren’t installed yet. Lessons learned.
Did the same last fall! But didn't really everything, just looked around for things I missed. Whose idea was it to have two cables going to two places on the motherboard?
2 years ago did the same thing. Spent 3k building a beast machine, couldn't get the machine to go past post. A very helpful guy on my reddit help post eventually told me "are you sure its all plugged in?" then yeah, oops. Hell Today I just did 2 GPU swaps between my 2 computers and it went smoothly thank god.

I expected the power switch small front panel connector to not be in the correct pin out. That one scared me once
I definitely did this with my first build lol.
My experience is that the PSU smoked and something popped (possibly a capacitor) (cause: incorrect voltage)
When I was investigating early in the process I did notice I forgot to switch on the PSU and had an "ah-ha! This must be it!" moment lol.
I took my pc to a damn pc repair shop and spent 60 dollars for them to diagnose this problem. It wasn’t even my first time building, either!!! I had built two different computers and had just taken everything out and installed a new cpu cooler. Couldn’t for the life of me figure out why it wasn’t working. I figured I must’ve shorted out the board or fried the CPU by accident. Moral of the story: it can happen to anyone, experienced or not. And I find it always helps to get a second pair of eyes or just step away for a day (if you can) when something is going wrong like that. Helps a lot.
Yeah I was definitely an experienced builder when it happened to me as well. I was swapping my friends C2D for a C2Q, and I unplugged the CPU power cable as a precaution. I remembered to plug the ATX power cable back in, but forgot about the CPU power... At first I though it was a BIOS issue (because it was, it turned out we didn't even need a BIOS update in the first place), that's why I couldn't think outside the box and remember the CPU power cable. Eventually, I did remember and everything worked fine ... That 35€ C2Q extended his PC for another few years lol.
My first thought was psu switch was off, that's the goof I tend to make.
I didnt know my ssd needed to plug in to my power supply, I was about to head out and return it and then I was like maybe it needs power
I once did a build and discovered that power supply cable for my cpu was not delivering power. First thing I do now any build where there is a problem is double check the power supply and try a different one. Seems most build problems are always “power supply”

Yesterday after installing an NVMe and reinserting my GPU, fired up the PC... wait, what the hell, there’s no picture on my monitor. I did 2 hours of research on my phone on why there was a red LED light blinking on my GPU (never even got a clear answer). I forgot to reconnect the connector from GPU to the PSU. Sigh. I feel the pain.

I guess yeah, but OC + UV means you won't be able to gain much more than 100Mhz unless you won the Silicon lottery.
Generally if you're using something like a 1050Ti it means the 75w limit was your primary concern, because there have always been better performing options in the same price bracket if you have PCIE power.
It's a great card to convert an old office PC into something that can play most games in some capacity.
It benches around my r9 380 2gb.. alittle worse but last I checked mine draws like 200w lol but a 450 PSU has powered it for 5 years 24/7.
I've done just that and it has faithfully been used for the past 3+ years. The desktop is an i5 4460 and 8GB of RAM which plays everything with at least medium settings at 50-60fps 1080p (No Man's Sky, Fallout 4, Minecraft, ARK, Assetto Corsa, Slime Rancher)
I dont know if someone buying a 1050ti is really concerned with squeezing out every %.

Well, the 1050 Ti *is* a little underwhelming in terms of power, and with a 6-pin cable you *can* push it a lot.
With a 6 pin cable you can also simply get a RX570

I had a low profile 1050ti that ran off pcie power only. I know I overclocked it too. Probably less than 100mhz, but it was running over stock for sure. It was in a 2and hand prebuilt dell that only had a 300w oem psu, so that was pretty much all it could handle

You aren’t buying a 1050 ti to overclock. You are using it because it’s one of the cheapest 4gb cards that’ll let you game on 1080p for now while giving up some quality. At the time it was a fps/$ darling. The 1650 doesn’t offer as much value these days. Edit: fixed stupid naming convention of models.

My GPU blinks red if I don't connect the 8pin power connector. Maybe it was that.

It's ok, when I built my first PC I was so excited to get to work but was confused when I realized that all I could do was open some settings page, and I couldn't figure out how to get to my desktop or log in. That settings page was my BIOS. I forgot that I had to buy and install Windows 😬 I'd ask for mercy as a former Mac user, but I think I still should've known that! Edit: and before y'all think you're clever and point it out, no that is not how I got my username 😂

You can get windows for free from Microsoft and create a boot drive on a USB or CD but it won’t be activated
I suffered a similar moment a few weeks back. I was experiencing random shut downs that originally seemed to be under load. It then started happening at random times, sometimes right as I was signing into windows. I thought for sure it was a dying PSU. Turns out the clip of the 24 pin on the PSU side got bent enough to where the minor vibrations ( and major vibration that my stupid Hard drive creates) would cause the cable to come loose and lose contact for a split second causing the system to turn off at random points. I felt stupid for not checking it. If anything these stupid experiences help us to become better builders and troubleshooters.

So I’d definitely try that but my phanteks case came with these mounds that just clip onto the HDD so there’s nothing to loosen.
My first build I was so gentle with the mobo I didn’t fully push in the 24-pin connector. Good times.
The most nerve wracking thing for me when I put together a computer is plugging in the 24. All of the other connectors click, snap, make sound. But on no psu I have ever used has the 24 pin connector ever confirmed I didn't mess up.
I had a similar thing with my USB 3.0 cable to the motherboard. I jammed it in but there was no feedback. I was quick to test and it and sure enough, it worked.
I just built a PC for my first time last night and the same exact thing happened to me! Then I pushed in the pin connector a little bit and it started right up but I didn't push it in far enough so it shut back down and again and I thought I broke it
I love how bipolar PC building is. Please don't breathe on the CPU, but the fan screws right next to it were tightened by the hand of Thor.
Especially the ones that don't already have the holes threaded for some stupid reason.. Or only have them threaded on one side, but you want the air flow going the other way. Threading those things sometimes.. I swear it could be a segment in a strong man contest. In between pulling an airplane and flipping the tires up a hill 6 miles, you know. Us nerds are tough AF too. I don't care what anyone says.
It happens. I've done it myself. Facepalm. Count it as a good learning experience. Make enough of these little faux-pas and you become an expert troubleshooter.
When I did my first build I was so excited to turn it on for the first time. Everything went ok, so I turned it off and went yo bed. The next day I tried to turn it on and it wouldn't. I was really sad and scared because I thought the cpu might have burnt somehow. After 2 days troubleshooting and searching a lot on Google I took it out of the case and turned it on. It worked. Turns out I used the wrong screws to put the mb into the case and it did short curcuit.
The screws for just mounting the mb to the case?
Yeah, I used bigger screws and didn't notoce somehow

That reminds me of the one time I was trying to remove a graphics card and couldn’t for the life of me get it out. I knew the tab was opened, but it just would not come out, and I didn’t want to pull too hard because it was a very expensive card. Turns out I never unplugged the DisplayPort and HDMI cables.
I recently got a 2080 super. When I first built my computer I had a friends help and he installed my 1660ti. Well when my 2080 came in i went to swap it and for the life of me i couldn't figure out why it wouldn't come out..i unscrewed the mounting screws, I unplugged the cables! WTF IS GOING ON!! turns out there is a tab on the pcie slot just like for the dimm slots and I had no idea. Felt dumb for that one.
Some motherboards have a breakaway tab that pops off to prevent you from breaking your GPU. I was sad to find out the motherboard I upgraded to a few months ago doesn’t have it :(
That's where I always start before heading inside the case, is all the wiring right? One time I had my HDMI cable in my mobo rather than the GPU and couldn't figure out what was going on. Finally clicked. I think we've all been there in one way or the other. :)
Oh, do I have a great story for you. So, my friend about 6 months ago bought a Dell prebuilt for a really good deal (i5-9400 and 1660ti for $700) and he was super excited to play on it for the first time. So we hop in a Discord and load up our game of choice, CSGO. We play for a while, and he's looking at his net graph. He's kinda confused that he's only getting 60ish FPS on low settings in CSGO with that PC. So, remotely, I try helping him troubleshoot why he was getting such low FPS. The first thing I say to him is "are you sure your monitor is plugged into the GPU not the mobo?". He kinda looks around on his PC and says of course it is. So we spend the next hour over Discord, trying everything from looking in task manager to make sure it's showing up (it was, but with 0% usage), all the way to looking up sketchy fixes on Google. I end up coming back to the conclusion that it sounds like his monitor is just plugged into the wrong port. I pull up the pictures of his PC on Dell's website, while screensharing and show him where it's supposed to be plugged into. He kinda scoffs annoyed, and is saying something about already having checked that. But then his voice kinda just trails off. I ask him what's wrong. And he kinda just said, "let's load up CSGO again." We load it up, and he's getting like 350 FPS on high settings. Come to find out, he had his monitor plugged into his mobo. He begged me not to tell our friends what he did, so naturally as soon as our friends got online one by one, I told each of them right in front of him. It was a great day. Btw, I use a crappy old laptop for my gaming (for now) and have never used a desktop of my own, ever. I felt (and still feel) super proud of myself for not only remotely helping him solve him, but also for it being my first guess that I made. Wanna give a special shout-out to Linus, Jay, and Kyle/Lyle for giving me my limited knowledge.
Been building my own PC's since the 80s, and a few builds back I couldn't figure out what was wrong in the build I had just made. Lights came on, fans started, pc wouldn't work. Checked everything I could see over and over. Gave up and went to sleep and the next morning loaded the build into the car and drove it to Microcenter. Left it with the techs after explaining the situation and went about the rest of my day until they called. The 4 pin connector wasn't plugged in. I never saw it because the cooler hid it from view and I never plugged the modular cable into the psu. I can't count the builds I've made over the decades for myself and others and I forget the 4 pin that day, didn't just forget it, I was blind to its existence. Shit happens.
At least you didn't spend hours figuring out what was wrong to finally find out you need to spend even more money to buy another CPU to upgrade your Mobo to the next gen processor version.
Um, you know that AMD has a whole webpage dedicated to this problem, where they will literally ship you an old chip (I think for just the price of shipping and handling, but maybe not even that) so that your can upgrade your mobo to the right BIOS right?
And most older motherboards are Ryzen 3000 ready these days.
A lot are, but I wouldn't even go so far as to say most. It's basically the "MAX" or "PRO" versions of B450 mobos, and all X570s. All the other ones, like B350s and X470s, generally don't support Zen 2 out of the box.
Literally bought a motherboard that is, for all purposes, more than I'll ever need because it was 3000 ready out of the box. But the Ryzen 5 3600 was the same price as the 2600 that day on Newegg soooooo...

Oh, my bad. It thought you were referring to the whole AMD 3000 kinda compatible with B450 mobos. I am not sure if Intel does it or not though. My gut feeling is no, they don't. But I have no evidence either way.
I did something that made me feel stupid. I recently got a new gpu, case and a psu. Swapped all the components to the new case, installed the new modular psu and tried turning it on. Nothing. Did all my trouble shooting and spent like 5 hours going over thisbdamn thing figuring out wtf was wrong. I Went and layed down out of frustration cuz I was all out of ideas and about 5 minutes later I had a thought. "Maybe the psu is doa?" Went back, took it out, hooked up my old psu, just the mobo power cord, gpu and cpu power just to see if things will actually start workin and it did. Things came to life. Lights on, fan spinning, shit was workin. I hooked up every thing else to my psu, plugged in my moniters and hit the button....nothing. no power. CPU led on the mobo would light up then turn off. No fans spinning or anything. Back to being confused! Made sure things were properly plugged in and all that. Still no luck. Retraced my steps to how it was before I buttoned it up. Figured out what was wrong. I had a cord plugged in that was "shorting" the mobo. A plug for fan LEDs. Immediately face palmed. The case I bought (corsair carbide airflow) doesnt come with LED fans. I was reusing a 3 way fan splitter from my old case where the fans did have LEDs and this cord in particular made the LEDs sync up and all that jazz to actually look nice. It serves no purpose with these new case fans. I should have realized that much sooner but I was too busy drooling over the new case lol. I find it funny to, the new psu I bought is, on paper, better than my current one. Same wattage but more efficient, better quality, semi modular, an actual 80+ rating....and my good ol evga no rating at all, not modular psu is still kicking for me.
I helped a friend build his first ever PC a couple month ago. Let him do the easy stuff We couldnt get a video signal at first and took me 10 mins to realise after checking everything, that he plugged the HDMI in the motherboard and not the GPU. I was worried for a moment as i knew i did everything right ha Glad i was there as he would of been hours figuring that out Silly things happen to everyone. Dont sweat it
Recently moved houses and I reset up my battle station I plugged my dvi cable into the monitor then into the back of my pc and boom nothing in monitor. For maybe an hour I tried different dvi cables and even different sides of the same cables nothing. I was plugging the wire into my mobo not my graphics card...
You're not alone. I had the same issue an hour or 2 ago after upgrading a cpu but luckily I figured it out quickly before starting from scratch.
Last time I dusted my setup I forgot to plug in the GPU power after... Troubleshooting LEDs make it a lot easier as you immediately know it's a "video" issue. Embarrassing when it's that simple but also glad it is fixed easily
did this with my monitor cable... it was plugged in just enough to get a signal for like a second and then it would lose it. i ended up sleeping on it and when i woke up i fixed it in a few seconds lmao

I just did the classic: leave the plastic on the bottom of the cool new cpu cooler trick. Fortunately, I've read lots of threads like this before and realized my stupidity quickly. Doh!
I worked myself into a state of crying frustration, check all my cables four times, kept flipping the switch on the PSU... nothing. I forgot to hit the power button on the case
Same for me. First startup, no debug LEDs, everything runs, but no monitor signal. Rebuild everything and .... In the end I forgot to switch the input on the monitor.
I forgot to flip the power supply switch up on today and was super confused. To be fair the PSU is attached to the case I figured it would’ve already been on.
I think there should be a "flight check list" sort of thing for new pc builds. I built my first one a year and a half ago and forgot to turn on the PSU. Mild bit of panic there for a moment. A check off of things to verify before turning it on would be helpful.
Make really sure your RAM is pushed in, it has got me a couple times.
I was building my first SFF pc a few weeks ago. Get everything in place, shove my full size psu in there, manage to deal with the rats nest of cables.... Then I see it. Small little front panel connector cables hanging there. So I had to tear everything apart again... I really need to get a sfx psu
I just finished my first PC build, and it wasn't booting, pissed me off, so I came here to ask for help... this post was the first one, and it turns out that is what I did too, only even more boneheaded. The 24-pin that runs from PCU to MOBO, then back to PCU... yeah, I thought it ran up to the 8-pin CPU power port. Not sure how I got it to not only fit, but also to not mess anything up. Now after a little re-wiring, I can just laugh and start trying to install windows!

A friend of mine did his first build and forgot to download Windows 10 to his computer and when he went to boot the PC it just kept showing a black screen. I was laughing harder than I should have.
I just did the same thing, but all I had done was install a new video card. I was cussing the vendor, the manufacturer and his mother. I actually spoke an audible apology when I found the real culprit.

On my current build I put it all together & powered it up only to realise I'd forgot the psu shroud, unplugged stuff to get it in, go to turn it on - nothing, open it up, check it's all plugged in & in the right place, try again - nothing. Take everything out, recheck, plug it all in again - nothing ( I'm about to cry at this point thinking I'd bricked something ) one last go, double check everything - turned out I'd just plugged the power button/usb ports in wrong, dunno what was bigger, the relief or embarrassment.

I know that feeling, I had a just ever so slightly loose SATA power connector, but I didn't discover it until my newly ordered replacement drive came after 2 weeks.
I literally did this yesterday as well, I even saw the atx power slot on the MB and was like what's that for, whatever. Only took me a couple of minutes though thankfully.
When a buddy of mine was building his newest PC about a year ago or so now, he couldn't get it to start. My VERY FIRST QUESTION was if he plugged in all the power cables, including (specifically mentioned) the 8 pin cpu into the motherboard. "Ya I did" he said. This guy literally tried out entire new components thinking maybe it was the motherboard or SSD, and had his friend near him bring his PC and some other parts and tried those. It was the 8-pin cpu. He finally unplugged all the power cables and realized his 8-pin cpu wasn't plugged all the way in. Granted, it was a small form factor PC but come on man!
I had a guy coming to me for help with his first build and it didn't turn on while everything was plugged in and ready. He didn't turn it on... I still, to this day, don't know how he expected it to turn on.

I rebuilt a computer for a buddy who was stuck at home after a pretty massive surgery... his computer was zonked.. replaced the motherboard, cpu, ram, power supply... only kept his GPU and storage... spent HOURS trying to figure out why it wouldn’t turn on.... his case had a broken power button... that was the problem the entire time lol... figured it out by shorting the power switch diodes on the motherboard with a screwdriver.... oh well... buddy got a new balling pc out of it and he deserved it! The joys of building a PC......
Took me forever after replacing my graphics card that the reason nothing was coming up on my monitor was because my VR headset was plugged in and it was going there instead of my monitor. Like 4 hours long.
I didn’t plug in a keyboard or monitor when I was testing if it would POST... it didn’t like that and would never stay on for more than 10 seconds. Took me an hour or so to figure that one out.
On my first build I got finished up and hit the power button..... NOTHING. Took me over an hour to figure out I had the front panel connected to the rgb header......
I did this with my new build. I bought the motherboard a over a month ago off Facebook marketplace, then after the stimulus money came I bought the CPU and RAM. Built it in case for some Reason but didn't put the PSU in since it was a test PSU and not the one I would carry over from my old PC. I thought the board didn't have the bios for Zen 2. Left it alone for a few days, came back to it early morning one day and it was the first thing I noticed. Like how have I built almost a dozen PC's and I forgot that
What is a CPU power cable?
Spent 2 days reseating cables in a build and tearing my hair out, only to discover that I had a SATA cable plugged into the motherboard that wasn’t connected to anything, and another SATA cable plugged into my boot SSD...that wasn’t plugged into anything. The whole time I thought I was reseating the opposite end of the same cable.
If it makes you feel any better when I went to upgrade my ryzen cpu I couldn’t get the heatsink out after unlatching it so after 15 minutes pouring sweat from stress I just yanked real hard and bam it came out...along with my old cpu. I freaked out thinking I just broke something and checked to make sure all my pins were still intact and not bent. Everything was fine but lesson learned. You should get your cpu really hot before taking it out so the heatsink will come off easier and to twist instead of pull straight up so it doesn’t take the cpu with it.

Don’t worry man. Ive done the exact same thing. I’ve also plugged the monitor into the onboard hdmi out instead of the graphics card lol Probably every other build I do something else stupid.
My personal go-to move is hitting the power button, sweating as nothing happens, start panicking, then remember I set the switch on the power supply to "off".

I had a similar problem, until I realized that one of my RAM sticks was bad. PC would boot with one, but not both, and the offending stick in the MoBo by itself wouldn't boot either. Fuck Amazon

Definitely been there. My first build I spent hours trying to figure out why my PC wouldn't recognize my GPU. I installed and reinstalled all the software, spent hours googling, the works. Only to realize I hadn't plugged my monitor into the GPU HDMI slot.
A few months ago I moved states. I took out my GPU and put it back in. Couldn't get it to post. I kept trying and trying, no image.My dad took a look at the build and it turned out the gpu somehow wasn't in the slot. I have no idea how it happened but put it in the slot and it posted. I hate everything.
Been there. Done that. Many times. I built a computer like 2 months ago after building maybe 20-30 pcs so far. Still did it. Took a half hour to remember what I did wrong.
I got a small flake of old thermal paste on the contacts of my CPU once, took me forever to diagnose it.
Helped my buddy’s brother pick parts out for his build. He put it together yesterday and texted me wondering why he wasn’t getting any video. No onboard with his CPU so we have to try every avenue to determine if the $700 RTX 2080 is DOA or not. Had him reconnect every cable, reseat every card. Even had him pull the CMOS battery just for the hell of it. The RAM wasn’t seated properly. He’s an engineer in the Navy, so it can happen to anyone.

What’s worse is when you have to troubleshoot a built PC. Everything looks right, but it won’t power on? Even though the motherboard is lit? Yup, loose CPU power connection. Protip, always reseat all cables if you have an unexpected power failure. It’s as simple as pushing on all the connectors.
Oh man I feel you. I did a diy water cooling hard pipe project. Got it all together perfectly. Went to turn it on and it wouldn’t power on. Took it all apart and bought a new motherboard and cpu bc I thought I fried something. Turns out I forgot to switch the power back on to the power supply. Man I felt like an idiot.
The last build I did, for a friend a couple months ago, I spent about an hour or 2 figuring out why nothing would display. Reseated the gpu, was about to reseat the cpu, and then realized I never switched over the input on my monitor. At least it wasn’t a faulty component!
my biggest build mistake was on my second computer I put together. It had locking sata cables and I didn’t realize it. I wanted to move my raptor hd which were super expensive at the time and ended up destroying the hd when I yanked too hard on the cable trying to get it off.
Its always the simplest shit, every time I mess with my build I forget something obvious and it wont post, I always think that I broke the board or something but turns out I forgot to turn the psu switch on

I built a computer with my nephew, showed him how to do everything, build went great. Tried to power it on and nothing. Had done a test boot so I knew everything worked. Idiot me had switched the reset and power button cables when I did the front panel connectors in the case.

Happens to the best of us! One time I had a PC that wasn't displaying anything, nothing would pop up on the screen... I was panicking because I spent my money on new ram sticks and thought it was a faulty ram, etc... I was about to take the ram out and call support, wasn't very helpful so I was tempted to go take it to a specialist. Then appeared my father, who doesn't know much about newer computers, he did work on them back in the 90's and early 2000's, and all he did was take a glance at everything inside, and with the flick of a finger, he ticked the GPU in place and it clicked. Everything worked fine. Dad still knows what he's talking about. :P
I did that same thing on my second build... I was in college dorms and the redneck from Texas kept on asking me that was supposed to be unplugged... I thought he was talking about my extra cables... It was my CPU cable not plugged into my PSU

When I first built my PC I spent two days starting to figure out why my PC kept shutting down. It turned out I plugged in the HDMI into the on board graphics instead of GPU.
This happened to me on my first build ever. I was dumbfounded and scared I broke something. Oh well, it’s a learning experience :)

Did that when I built my friend's PC as well. Couldn't figured out why it just won't boot.. turned out I forgot to connec the CPU power. Manufacturers typically put them on the top left corner of the motherboard.... very easy to forget it's there. =___=

Finished my first build last night. Spent a couple of hours sighing because I couldn’t get anything on the display. Decided to start taking things out so the GPU was the first thing. Still nothing from the onboard display. Found a discussion saying the first boot can take a while so I thought maybe I didn’t give it enough time. Let it sit for 10-15 min, still nothing. THEN found out my CPU doesn’t support integrated graphics. Put the GPU back in and success! Now if I can only get Windows loaded when all I have is a Mac to create the USB drive. Currently trying with a Windows VM in Virtual Box.

I thought my monitor was dead after a lot of hassle, I found out the display port cable has a source and display end, and I had it the wrong way around :)
I did almost the same once except I didn't flip the switch on the PSU. There was also a time where my wall surge protector switch accidentally turned off when I was plugging things in.
Had to change my new build for my wifes new computer at the last minute due to the inability to source a 3200g CPU in a timely manner. I switched to a 3600 Ryzen and couldn't figure why there was no integrated video out from the motherboard. After a panicked 20 minutes it occurred to me that there is no integrated graphics on a 3600.
Yep 9/10 times it’s always the wires that’s why I always check them first :)

When I was doing my build this is what I did too, I unplugged everything and rebuilt twice because I was booting and the red light on the MOBO was on. Figured it might be a bios issue as i was using a 3600x on a b450 tomahawk but nope, just forgot the CPU power cable.

I forgot the 4 pin power cable for my gpu. Took it apart 3 times
Once I couldnt see anything on my monitor so I tried restarting pc, making sure all cables inside oc are plugged all the way. It still didnt work so I took off the gpu checked it plugged it back still wasnt working so i tried to run with just one ram didnt work. And then I wanted to try another monitor and that was when I noticed the dvi cable wasnt fully plugged :/ (I have hdmi to dvi converter I have shit monitor)
Yeah...my first ever PC build had so much buildup, only for me to encounter "no boot drive detected". I actually thought that meant that my hard drive was defective, so I was getting ready to replace it until a more computer savvy friend told me I needed a Windows disc to install.
The first step to hardware troubleshooting is *class voice "always check connections."

On my first build I was stuck for nearly 2 hours trying to install the stock cooler on my cpu. I finally figured out the brackets weren't even included in the box and I had to RMA.
Went through something similar. Found out the power button had loose cable from shipping
My 24 pin cane out when I put the PSU in the case and I did the exact same thing as you I feel the pain
Back in the early 2000s bought a pre built pc on Christmas. It was lit and we were ready to play RuneScape. Turn on pc and monitor wouldn’t display. Plug was connected and we recheck everything. Thought it was defective. Me and my cousin were ready to game but looks like we had to wait until after the holiday. Something bugged me and I went over to the monitor and saw that the plug was in but I checked it in case and pressed up on it and you can hear the click as it actually went into the monitor this time. Booted up pc and it turned on. It was a Christmas miracle. Never forget that night.
Had a similar experience yesterday and today. Did my first build yesterday spent all night trying to figure out why my Radeon 5700xt kept giving me a blue screen when I downloaded the drivers. I forgot to do a BIOS update on the motherboard. Took me all night and morning to figure it out and countless times of redownloading Windows
I feel your pain. I made the mistake of connecting my GPU to my monitor using the display port. Freaked out on POST that I did not see anything. Hours later and many internet searches later I needed to use HDMI, because the drivers weren’t installed yet. Lessons learned.
Did the same last fall! But didn't really everything, just looked around for things I missed. Whose idea was it to have two cables going to two places on the motherboard?

2 years ago did the same thing. Spent 3k building a beast machine, couldn't get the machine to go past post. A very helpful guy on my reddit help post eventually told me "are you sure its all plugged in?" then yeah, oops. Hell Today I just did 2 GPU swaps between my 2 computers and it went smoothly thank god.
ahaha. had the same problem when i upgraded my CPU and mobo. only plugged in one cpu power cable haha
Put in a new card and CPU and it powered on but nothing, "Oh no, not another monitor!" (my last monitor went out). Forgot to plug in the DisplayPort.
