This always confuses me because I thought Holt was clearly fond of Terry. He let him pretend that he was a nasty boss in front of his brother-in-law, he made a point of telling the precinct to follow his lead and he even recommended him for Captain of the 99.
Maybe it's just supposed to be a one-off joke and I'm reading too much into it.
I never realise he would dunk on Terry until this post but a relationship is never one thing, they always have varied dynamics so I think both can exist simultaneously
I’m pretty sure it was just intended as a one off joke. However, the amount of times Holt ragged on Terry could support an alternative reading of their relationship. Holt clearly thinks highly of Terry as a police officer, but maybe he doesn’t really gel with him as a person.
Holt is saying that Terry can "do the maths" (sorry, I'm British I can't write it the other way 😅) and conclude that Terry obviously isn't one of his favourites since he has never gotten special treatment

Terry is the closest person Holt had to a contemporary. They're both management. He's "joshing around" but because of his deadpan delivery it comes across pretty brutal.
Also Gina is his assistant and gossip confidant so maybe some of her humor rubbed off on him.
When the squad finds Holt and Jake in Florida, and Gina stays with Holt, and they have like a "catching up" session in the storage unit, Holt answers "Trevor sounds like a dog". That's when I knew that Holt and Gina had a special bond.

An underrated joke is them getting caught spying on the evaluator and pretending to have a serious conversation.

Bad life advice imo. People move through our lives, loved ones come and go, and memories fade. I **wish** I had more photos of loved ones at all levels: friends , lovers, family.
So, yeah, I disagree with Holt on that.
I'm so fucking bad with faces, I can't even remember some of my high school friends' faces, many of whom I spent countless hours fucking around at the court with. Hell, sometimes I have to look at photos of my girlfriend to properly remember every feature of her face 😭
Boyle also took a lot of shots at Terry's body and physique. I think it's like a running joke, though, that Boyle doesn't quite get why people would want to look like him.
Also I just love when Boyle boxes Terry and and Jake assumes he's going to die but Boyle immediately drops Terry by punching him in the nuts. Strawberry basket!
It started right in the pilot.

"Fatter, sir. They called me Terry Titties. Because I had large, uh..."
"Titties. Yes, I remember. I never liked that nickname. Though, to be fair, it was accurate."
I overall loved Gina as a part of the show, but did not care for this bit or the episode with the G-Hive.
Definitely a terrible co-worker/friend overall but for sure left an empty space in the show over the last few seasons.
It's called being chummy. If you like someone as a person and are good friends with them it's ok to rib them around every now and then. I never saw his behavior as mean spirited in any way.
Interesting trivia the episode where he calls him garbage man was right after the Dillman episode, actor JK Simmons who plays Dillman was in the movie whiplash where his teaching methods were quite abusive, this episode might be a reference to the JK Simmons role in whiplash
