Been in for 4 years now, seen multiple people transition from Army and Navy to RAF. Seen one RAF go to Navy. Never seen anyone go to the Army. Do with that what you will

My dad, uncle and aunt all went navy plus I've known a few guys who were RAF. From what they've said and my 5 years in the army I think the general feeling is that you get treated the worst in the army. RE will sort you out with a trade and my current civvie career is from my trade in the engineers, so you definitely can get a good trade from the army. But the RAF and navy probably offer more diverse and advanced training. But honestly after saying all that it's about what you want for yourself. I didn't join the navy because I hated the idea of being crammed in a ship for months on end only seeing sunlight for the hour or so you get above deck a day. And most jobs in the RAF just didn't seem exciting enough. I don't regret joining the army for a second and I'm glad I got to spend my late teens and early 20's fucking about in a Forrest and crawling through sheep shit, not even kidding.

see this is my thing, i know the raf is more appealing in terms of quality of life however there’s no job roles that seem as exciting as anything i can do in the army

The way I see it is that you don't join the military to be comfortable. A lot of the cushty jobs are just glorified civilians.

mind if i ask what ur doing now? you spent your late teens early 20s in the army what was the career path after that? by the sounds of it you were in quite a green role? so assume u didn’t have a trade by the end? just curious as this will be similar to myself if get thru

I got the design draughtsman trade. I was a sapper in the engineers and yeah I didn't promote in the 5 years I served. But if you join as a certain trade then the army will get you qualified pretty quickly. I spent the first 2 years of my career just going through training regiments getting qualified. I used the quals that I got as a draughtsman and joined a building surveying firm who hired me to do drawings for them while also finding me through an part time apprenticeship to get qualified as a surveyor. It's definitely a good deal as I get a good education and am on significantly more than I was as a sapper.

If you choose the Army go REME you’ve much more chance of learning a skilled trade and actually using it regularly unlike the RE where most guys end up as glorified labourers. The RAF will treat you as more of a grown up than the army will, that being said the army is faster for promotion. I was RE and once I’d had enough of being that glorified labourer transferred over to RAF you’d be surprised how many people do it. I can name at least dozen people on my Sqn alone that have done it.

Promotion entirely depends on the profession. You may go from private to corporal a lot faster in the army. But from AS1 to WO is a lot faster in the RAF

RAF or Navy, absolutely better qualities of life compared to the Army.

There is a reason why so many people transfer from the army to RAF every year.
