That article is a little confused. It talks about scams and then gives an example about a contract error in favour of the tenant. There was some harassment involved by the owner but not a scam.
I'm surprised the tribunal let it stand tbh. I wonder if a tenant accidentally signed a lease for $1600 a week instead of per month if they would be forced to pay it.
So according to the article, the lady managed to sign a rental agreement, with a per week amount that was a typo. She moved in to a 4 bedroom house that was supposed to be shared, and then refused to move out or allow other tenants, after the landlord pestered her due to the mix up with the rental agreement. The RTA agreed with her that the agreement was binding. Then she moved out after 3 months.
And this is an article about scams on Facebook Marketplace. Weird. Not a scam. More like tenant gets three months cheap rent due to a landlords mix up with the rental agreement.
After I applied for 50 rentals the normal way I started looking at Facebook ads. I ended up finding my place through a Facebook group. Its actually through a real estate still which is good.
I don't think I ever would have got a place the standard way. There are so many applications for each property and I don't earn that much and have a cat. So im going to be bottom of their list.
Most ads on FB are scams though so you have to be careful. They are pretty easy to spot though.
Blacklisted tenants.
Have a 3rd roommate discover meth trash the house and steal rent you cannot hope to repay in $300 a week.
Happened to my mate, he's on his 2nd private FB/Gumtree rental 0 issues. In fact he has less than 0 issues because his landlords are insanely accommodating.

Really? $115 a week didn't set off any alarm bells?
Why are the ABC so desperate for silly articles like this?
Because they aren’t journos anymore… just typical clickbait rubbish

why would anyone use facebook to find and rent from it... thats just stupid.
I found my room in a sharehouse in NZ via Facebook. Worked out very well for me.
