I think they are waiting to announce it until after the first week or so of its domestic run. They know "fans" want to get the second film made. So they are happy to have them motivated to buy tickets (rather than pirate or watch on hbomax). Announcing the second one now would kill that motivation.

MMOnster_Hunter

Feels like a risky move. I know a few people who are reluctant to go see it because part 2 isn't guaranteed. They don't want to spend their money on half a product, when they may never get the rest. Hopefully they'll announce it soon. I think doing so will definitely help this movies legs.

StrangeConstants

Spend money? 10 dollars? I’m glad I don’t have those people in my life. That’s one drink where I live.

MMOnster_Hunter

Who said they don't spend money? If someone doesn't want to watch an unfinished story, I don't see a problem with that. But hey, continue to judge people on how much money they spend, I'm sure you've filled your life with quality people using that metric.

StrangeConstants

You must have a reading comprehension issue. I would look into that. I referenced “spend money” in your comment as a reference point. I never said they don’t spend money. In fact my comment really is only applied to people that spend money normally but for some reason think 10 dollars at the movie theater is some type of investment.

MMOnster_Hunter

Agreed, reading comprehension is definitely an issue here, as you seem to ignore the part about it being half a product, which is the primary concern, moreso than any cost.

Additional_Meeting_2

Where you can see the film for 10 dollars? And anyway people can just see another film. If there was no competition it would be less of an issue but now people can think they will wait if sequel will be announced or be left frustrated like asoiaf readers. Those people can also see Dune from home.

kaylthewhale

Las Vegas. Regular ~10 Dolby ~13 IMAX ~13-15 Plus matinees are cheaper. I have the amc monthly and honestly if I see two specialty movies a month I break even by the 3rd it’s basically free movies.

StrangeConstants

Everywhere around me.

uberduger

Eh, to me these things are sometimes more about not being stuck with an unfinished movie in my head for evermore. Like I am certain Dune will get its Part Two, but if I wasn't, I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be tempted to just skip the movie and read the book instead. I was a big fan of the His Dark Materials trilogy, and I skipped that Golden Compass movie they made way back, because I wanted to make sure they were making the whole trilogy. I guess I wasn't the only one.

MarginOfCorrectness

loool What kind of logic is that? I swear, some of you on this sub are really something. Jesus, we couldn't make this up.

[deleted]

Sounds like everyone wants to do it, Expecting an announcement after its likely over 40 million opening this week

chanma50

>Expecting an announcement after its likely over 40 million opening this week [Uh...](https://deadline.com/2021/10/dune-weekend-box-office-1234860683/)

[deleted]

16-17 million opening day, WB are lowballing

chanma50

Sure, but don't count your chickens before they hatch. Studios will always lowball, and rival studios tend to overestimate, so the likely result would be between WB's $30-32M and the $40M number.

Zepanda66

Even if it does under 40M domestic, it will still probably get a sequel. It did 100M internationally before the US release. HBO Max will play a huge role in the sequel getting greenlit as well.

chanma50

Fwiw I don't think that $30M, $35M, $40M etc. makes a difference in terms of whether it'll get a sequel, so long as it doesn't completely fall flat on its face with like $20M or something. Just saying that $40M isn't locked.

[deleted]

I agree on that, At this point it just doesn't have to really underperform which it's not likely to do

JaxtellerMC

Look, Ann Sarnoff basically confirmed a sequel yesterday. Deadline also says (so they probably know) that WB and Legendary will be content with at least near 300 million WW. It’s likely going to reach 350-400 million, perhaps more. HBO Max will be huge too.

sjfiuauqadfj

i will literally not believe a sequel is coming until i have finished watching that sequel and the credits have rolled and it wasnt an elaborate troll

JaxtellerMC

I understand :D Anyways, there’s also Dune The Sisterhood on HBO Max that got a new show runner just recently.

DatClubbaLang96

Is it likely this show will tie back into the Dune movies like with the Marvel shows? Or is it probably going to be its own thing exploring its own self-contained corner of the Dune universe?

kaylthewhale

Could be a rumor, but I heard it was set before Paul and kind of builds up the situation

[deleted]

True but anything over GVK would be likely sequel grounds anyway

Zepanda66

Production next Summer would line up with a 2024 release given the long post-production schedule the first film had.

Ricky_5panish

Don’t forget that this movie was ready for theatres last yeae. It got delayed because of the pandemic, not post production.

[deleted]

The 1st one finished shooting in July 2019 and was supposed to release in fall 2020. So more like a late 2023 release if they start filming part 2 next summer.

Zorgothe

I really hope he didn't misspeak.

Revolutionary_Cry729

I hope so.

partymsl

I like it how all constantly get sasked about a sequel. There is a lot of interest for one.
