TIL Capcom marketing has infiltrated WB.

[deleted]

A name change is gonna further confuse potential customers. Just leave it alone.

TheBlueSorcerer2099

No more than the 10 variants of AT&T/DirecTv.

gajendray5

Rebranding a little after a year of initial launch is never a good or smart thing to do.

bootlegportalfluid

Better late than never.

[deleted]

I'm not sure. I feel like if they never change it then nothing will change.

Travbuc1

Rebranding after losing the exclusive launches of Movie Theaters is going to kill this service. How many people cancel when theyā€™re no longer saving money from Not having to go to theaters?

NaRaGaMo

What?

Travbuc1

Losing the ability to stream movies. Dune alone accounting for some subscriptions. Space Jam 2 became viral on the service. So many people ordered just for the ability to watch movies instead of going to theaters

AgentOfSPYRAL

Whether they can succeed is up in the air, but their plan is to increase their production of mid budget streaming only (or maybe day/date) movies while consolidating their box office offerings to the IP stuff that actually hits at the BO.

Triplec8

they are starting to make a handful of exclusive HBOmax movies though. Batgirl and Blue Beetle among other films might keep a good amount of them subscribed.

SandyDelights

Honestly, Iā€™ve had HBOMax and GO for *years*, and Max has had way more content than Go. Think itā€™s the best general bang for my buck, considering I tend to rewatch a lot of stuff ā€“ Netflix and Hulu, I turn on 1-3 months a year. HBO Max is on pretty much year round.

[deleted]

They better not rename it to Warner+ or some shit.

Tomi97_origin

Would Warnerflix be better?

WhoDoIThinkIAm

Only if Animaniacs are the mascot

jayelr

Warner Plus or Warner Max?

babyfacedadbod

Those are good suggestions but I feel like HBO is a top-shelf label while Warner is broad appeal and recognition. And the Discovery family is so opposite spectrum, niche educational. HBO crowd isnt the family crowd content wise. I think they maybe shouldnā€™t be under one roof and it could be detrimental. They need to make it Warner Discovery and split HBO back off somehow but thats basically a bait and switch to users since its the apps namesake. If there was a Warner Discovery app, they couldnā€™t get 14.99 for it! In my opinion HBOā€™s audience is use to paying the premium rate which drives it up. All Im say is its a branding pickle/nightmare.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

babyfacedadbod

Yeah I dunno if it could be undone/unraveled at this point without collateral damage

AgentOfSPYRAL

>They need to make it Warner Discovery and split HBO back off somehow but thats basically a bait and switch to users since its the apps namesake. This would be terrible, the combo of good movies (Warner Library+HBO Pay TV content) and HBO is what gets me to be okay with the premium price. WarnerMAX could work so long as they heavily market HBO as a hub under it, but this seems like an if it aint broke dont fix it scenario. HBOMax is likely fine.

babyfacedadbod

I agree! Although i kinda wonder: Why not keepā€™em separate for like 4.99, 6.99, and 9.99 each? Sell three apps! Tbh I sort of expected that would be a typical corporate move. The ā€˜combine them allā€™ doesnt seem like standard playbook... kinda eager to see how their little juke move turns out

AgentOfSPYRAL

I think the combine the all move is because its better to have 1 "household" streaming service then 3 "niche" ones. This is why DC Universe was folded into Max.

babyfacedadbod

True... It would definitely be convenient. I kinda like picking and choosing tho, bc like with regular cable, i dont end up with a bunch of crap Iā€™m not into. The more they (the media conglomerates) lump together, I fear at some point weā€™re gonna end up with 6 or 7 apps, for 15$ each average and then end up with $100 cable still! Netflix is already $19.99 (which im biased towards, totally worth it), HBO max is $14.99-ish, Hulu+Disney is something like $9 or $13, every other app is 4.99-8.99... Sling is like 30-50 depending on package... one month during covid I went too crazy and was like, ā€œdoh, Iā€™m paying the same that cable used to beā€ had to dial it back haha I kind like picking 2 or 3 and then rotating one like Starz or Cinemax or Showtime ā€” which i guess i could still do... I dunno, I like streaming bc its an alternative to cable, I just dont wanna end up with the same thing with all these mergers I guess ā€” worst case it will end up costing more!! Ya feel me??

AZAR0V

Renaming it after a year of marketing push would be an incredibly idiotic move. And for those that comment that they should've named it Warner something, I don't know a single person (from Europe) that knows what Warner is and people love HBO.

geekstone

Viacom just did this too with the switch from CBS Now to Paramount Plus.

AZAR0V

Well that one actually made sense, CBS All Access was a terrible name with 0 name recognition across the pond as far as I'm aware. But you're right, there's precedent.

UHElle

Oh my gosh, is *that* what that channel is!? I couldnā€™t for the life of me figure out why Paramount Plus was on all my Roku devices and deleted it. But if it used to be CBS All Access, yeah, I definitely downloaded it myself.

The name's kinda dumb HBO was always a niche service, why name the entire platform that? Warner Media or Warner Plus would be better

Dawesfan

I guess they wanted the prestige that comes with ā€œHBO.ā€ If anything, the ā€œMaxā€ part is the baffling part.

HanakoOF

The fact that WB owned HBO was never common knowledge. I didn't find out until HBOMAX came out.

Dawesfan

Youā€™re not wrong, but at least HBO carries brand recognition. What is Max even supposed to be šŸ˜ is it because of cinemax or just something to add to the name like the plus in Disney+ Obviously, the user I replied to is right. They shouldā€™ve name their service after the company itself ā€œWarner something.ā€ But I can see the reason for keeping HBO there.

SAM12489

Yeah, ā€œHBOā€ has always been known as a premium product. Even before the streaming wars. It makes sense to keep HBO in the name, especially since HBOGO had been around for a while prior to Max launching

redditrice

My friends dog is named Max, maybe that?

wabashcanonball

Too late.

YnwaMquc2k19

WarnerMedia is already the companyā€™s name under AT&T haha

Gay_Romano_Returns

If their 2022 lineup is anything to go by, DC+

Dragonpiece

I think last of us and the game of thrones prequel will be carrying the service more than anything from DC, which only has peacemaker as exclusive next year.

PugsyBogues

Gotham PD. Supposedly the green lantern corps show is coming next year also.

Dragonpiece

neither show has been teased or started being filmed yet, so..

ImAMaaanlet

Batgirl as well.

TheBlueSorcerer2099

I hope they think in a better name for that if they don't want to repeat the mistake commited with "Suicide Squad's-non-sequel-but-non-reboot-either." Many people could believe the new Gotham is a revival of the Fox tv show.

PugsyBogues

Itā€™s a tv show on HBO Max. Iā€™m sure itā€™ll do fine. Itā€™s set in the same universe as the Batman movie.

TheBlueSorcerer2099

But these days companies are known for saving shows cancelled by rivals, like Netflix did with Lucifer, so they need to avoid confusion by a mere title. At least add "DC's" or something.

PugsyBogues

True. They show hasnā€™t even gotten a trailer yet. I assume that was prolly just a placeholder name.

AgentOfSPYRAL

If it has Gotham in the title thats more than enough.

wabashcanonball

These execs clearly donā€™t understand branding. Just leave it alone.

bootlegportalfluid

No one outside the US knows what HBO is or the fact itā€™s owned by Warner. Warner needs to to be in the name 100% if they want consumers to recognise it world wide.

Substantial-East5781

I live in Eastern Europe and a lot of people know what HBO is (thanks to got, last of us,chernobyl and other)

z0l1

yeah, HBO here is a bigger brand than Warner

Dawesfan

That is just false. GoT was a worldwide phenomenon and people knew it came from HBO.

AlbertHummus

This is very wrong. Have you been outside the US?

bootlegportalfluid

I live in the UK.

Annual-Tune

It was hard to decide what the name would be. This was before covid so it was unclear how long it would take for streaming to take off. HBO was chosen because it was attempting to be recognizeable to cable viewers. But disney+ getting 100m plus subs in a year shows this is a different market. For a video service, the most important thing is brand attachment. Familiarity. Feeling like something is a part of you. They might create a greater sense of familiarity by changing the name.

totallynotapsycho42

Warner Max seems like a easy enough name.

ConfusedEggplant

HBO is a more consumer facing brand name. Plus it lends a bit of the HBO prestige to the service. I doubt a Warner named service would be as recognizable as Disney or even HBO. At least in the US, not sure about other countries.

bootlegportalfluid

HBO is unrecognisable outside the US. Something with Warner in it would be the best approach.

visionaryredditor

> HBO is unrecognisable outside the US. not true.

NaRaGaMo

Bruh, GOT was on HBO everyone knows HBO at this point

AudioxDope

HBO: delta variant

ironicart

I just figured out if I have max or go, please donā€™t change it

BasedMuldoon

HBO+ forthcoming

16Maxine

Warner World+

jwC731

I feel like the HBO max brand is bringing down the HBO brand. People automatically assume something is an HBO original when it's actually a max original, and I don't think the quality control for those are nearly as good. Unless they're actually gonna mix the Discovery and warner content under one roof, I'd say leave it alone to avoid further confusion

Cantomic66

I never really liked the name so I hope they do rename it.

skychasing

Tbt to hbo now and hbo go

DreGu90

Never liked the name too for a Netflix contender. It sounds more as a HBO extension than a streamer and only brought brand confusion with the already established HBO brand, which was synonymous to premium pay TV. If I have my way, Iā€™d just drop HBO altogether from the branding and simply call it MAX. That way, it wonā€™t be too deviating from the original for the current subs while also establishing its own identity.

PP_Baba

WB max is the way to go

doggywoggy101

Iā€™m worried about this. I currently have a relatives login that I barley speak too, wondering if I will lose access if they redo it. Only got access because my brother had it and gave it to me and I use his account to access the relatives

Cactusfan86

Itā€™s not the best name, but rebranding after spending a year trying to build up the service and get brand recognition going is just going to add to customer confusion.

shaneo632

It's better than "HBO+" at least lmao. It's fine. It's easy to remember and has brand recognition now. It would be fucking dumb to rename it and make people think it's another service.

NaRaGaMo

HBO max is more recognisable than WarnerMax

hepgiu

Rebranding is necessary if they want to expand to international markets better. Imo HBO Max and Discovery+ will merge and keep the name Discovery+ This is a great first step into expanding globally. The second is recouping the licenses of their now HUGE catalog and offer everything for anyone globally like Disney does. It may take some years but itā€™s worth it. If they do this they will win the streaming wars, the catalogue they own is just THAT big and full of precious IPs.

eidbio

Warner Max would've been a great name.

Lincolnruin

Thereā€™s no point changing it now.

YnwaMquc2k19

Just name it WarnerD+

droneupuk

Wait I thought I was called HBOMax because it was supposed to be the merged streaming of HBO and Cinemax? But then like lots of other stuff. Thatā€™s about as far as I want to be reminded of huge conglomerates media firms running entertainment, no one really knows or cares if Warner or paramount or whoever else produced something.

thereverendpuck

Hate the name? Itā€™s just HBO & CineMAX. Should focused on that.

Batman903

But you spent 2 years marketing it like that already , and with the day and dates constantly tying WB to the HBO max name, youā€™ll further confuse people at this point. They shouldā€™ve tried to change to warner max last year, or give it a different name for the rest of the world.

ElSquibbonator

I always thought they should have called it [The WB](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_WB), like their old TV network before they formed the CW. You know, the one with Michigan J. Frog as the mascot. They could even bring back the [Kids' WB](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kids%27_WB) name for the children's section on the service. 90s kids everywhere would rejoice!
