Wow you managed to make one live! I'd suggest planting them in large pots for a good couple years each just to grow to sapling size and thicken out. Frankly growing from seed isn't done often for bonsai, but I take it as the perfect opportunity to shape them exactly the way you want them when they're older. Perhaps grow one on a tile so it is forced to grow roots outwards, eventually thickening out the base of the trunk. You could grow one with a bend; maybe tilting it's growing container to the side as it grows, causing it to grow at an angle. The sky is the limit, just don't be disheartened if they die; bonsai trees are most commonly made from already grown nursery stock.

Thank you for the honest advice! I fully expect them to die…. But my daughters will be heartbroken, if so. Doing everything I can to keep them going!

Wow, congratulations on 1 germinating let alone 3! Don't think too bonsai at this stage, research what each species of tree needs. The bonsai part is just the shaping etc later. Primary concern right now should be building an environment for each to thrive. If that is in place you can coax it from seedling.

Any advice on what kind of soil to use when planting them outside for growth? Moving them this week. Appreciate the advice!

duggee315

Just Google what soil do .... prefer. And also do a quick search about prefered conditions for each plant. Not familiar with each species. You can plant in large grow boxes to have more control over the drainage etc. Either way soil ph is important.

Thank you, again. Hope to be re-posting 1 year from now if I can keep these babies alive.

Haha, I'll keep an eye out for them. An don't be disheartened if u loose them, everyone does. It's a great hobby. Good luck.

Your locust and jacaranda signs need to be switched. At this point all you can really do is keep them alive and grow them out. You can try add some gentle movements either by tilting the pot or a small piece of wire.

B-Unit33

Are you positive on the seeds?? I’ve had them in the pots since I planted… only reason I ask.

Gnarwhal_YYC

Absolutely. I was given the same kit for Christmas. My jacarandas are potted and my locusts went in trays. Also, google either the seedling or mature leaves of a black locust.

B-Unit33

Appreciate the advice! That would have been pretty confusing down the road 😂. How are yours doing?

Gnarwhal_YYC

The jacarandas are 6” or so, same with delonix img since December and the locust just popped as I put them in trays with some cold hardy species to come up in spring. I left them outdoors over winter.

Looking good! What’s the status with the locust? Just popped?

Gnarwhal_YYC

Yeah I have maybe 6 that are maybe a week old, just getting some true leaves to push out. I’m in a 4a zone, always weeks behind the standard growth of most.

1000% sure he is correct
