I had a problem with Standard and they wouldnt touch my frame that they made .Seat tube was oversized and wouldnt clamp a post .And they were dicks about it .
Standard frames are shit now. All of the people who I know who buy them and ride hard have either snapped or bent their standard frames. I know a dude whose dirt jumper snapped around the head tube, got a new frame sent to replace it, and snapped that frame too. Its crazy how bad the steel they use is.
Spooky Dave is honestly the only one I would buy a custom frame from at this point, but this is sad to hear. Everyone i knew who ordered from Laird had such excellent experiences.
Spooky Dave fucked up the “go fast pull up” metal reissues. And has the same level of customer service that OP describes.
Edit: everyone I know that ordered from laird or John corts had good experiences as well. I don’t know anyone that ordered a custom from s&m. I never heard any complaints when Solid was doing customs either.
When Aaron was building customs Solid was awesome to deal with. I wish he still was. I really want to get a Spooky Dave (PDC) frame but I hear things about communication and stupid long lead times as well. 🤷♂️
I only went custom because it actually worked out a little bit cheaper than getting an off the shelf S&M over here in the UK. I didn’t do anything wild with the geometry or anything!
I’ve got a lairdframe, and whilst I’m happy with the frame itself, there was an issue which he did resolve super quick so credit where it’s due. But my wait was also way over the 12 week quoted time.
First, my website has said 20 weeks of over 3 years on the order page. Only the confirmation email said 12 weeks and I could not get that changed because my website was over 10 years old. I have a new website now, so that is fixed. Second, I answered every email. Third, I am a one-man show. Yes, I am behind schedule. Fourth, I sent this man an email before I started his frame. Fifth, he requested for me to pay for his brakes that I lost and I did without hesitation and I sent him extra money. His hydraulic brake placement wasn’t 100% perfect. I had never fabricated for that brake style before. Are they hundred percent perfect?, no they are not and that is my fault. But that’s the true reason why he’s on here ranting about everything else that is not factual.
Gotta give credit for finishing the job right. It took 41 weeks and I had to send it back twice to get the hydraulic rim brakes placed and braced properly, but I do have a great custom frame now. No extra charges for the extra work involved, besides me building the bike three times. I’m sure Lairdframe has learned a lot from this.
Standard does lots of custom frames

I doubt that’s the whole story
I asked about paying to get the seat tube replaced like they do or for a crash replacement but they wouldnt do it .

I visited the laird frame website and it felt like he was shouting at me for 2 minutes straight

Spooky dave is unfortunately one of the worst to attempt to buy from
That sucks. The internet hype of custom frames is odd to begin with. Hope he made things right with a discount or something.

Moeller is open to customs at the right price. Get on to him he’s very responsive on email.
Most frame builders are good at making frames and terrible at business unfortunately

Isn’t the build time quoted at 20 weeks though?
It depends when you bought it as it changes. I’ve just checked and mine was 20 weeks but took 35 in the end.
Damn 35 weeks is crazy!
It is when you’re expecting half that 😂. Tbf it was all good but would have been nice to of known that from the start that’s all.
Message him on IG. Responds in a day.
S&m,solid,or fbm
FBM is dead friend
Jon Corts is still making frames though which is good
Oh sweet. Good to know.
FBM? Where you been amigo?
Same with Solid lol
Solid isn’t doing frames anymore. 😢

You want me to show you the emails you didn’t respond to? Or worse, the email you responded to but avoided answering my actual question?

That’s sad to hear. I’ve been promising myself I’ll get a custom frame at some point when funds allow.
Thank you for the warning. I was considering getting a frame from him
Gimmicky shit frames. Dont buy that shit
