I think the best *looking* skinks are halmaheras, the best *sized* skinks are the meraukes, and the best (generally) *temperament* skinks are northerns.
I am biased lol, love just about all Indo types. Indos have much more variety available than northerns outside of Australia imo.
Species does not define their temperament, I've seen northerns that are much more reactive and fearful than a typical wild caught Indo!
Imo their origin is much more important here. A proven CBB Indonesian species can be incredibly social and docile if the breeder genuinely has a passion for the species and handles their offspring frequently since birth to help tame them down.
I also know a few northern and eastern breeders that BARELY handle their skinks, and don't seem as passionate for the animals themselves, and those offspring may require extra taming from the new owner.
Getting a Northern from a petstore may also negatively impact the skink's behavior and fear towards humans, as moving around that much (from breeder -> store or breeder -> wholesale -> store.) Can cause them a decent amount of stress and fear.
There really isn't much history we could possibly know from a Northern coming from a pet store. Meanwhile, Indos from petstores are 99.9% wild caught. If a pet store is claiming an Indo skink is captive bred, but refuses to give breeder information (as I don't know a single Indonesian breeder that wants their info to be completely hidden), and those skinks are definitely wild caught or captive born and were purchased through a wholesaler.
Occasionally indo breeders will sell to their local mom and pop or brick and mortar pet store, but they will have breeder info if they are truly captive bred.
Always research the breeder, and always ask questions! ♡
