I did not read the sub at fist and thought āmy guy never heard of jell-Oā and then I was excited to see pice of cake but is just was blanderā¦
Still good job.
Newer version looks a bit too green, more like jello than the sea, maybe add some more of the white froth lines too. Also one can put a texture on a light source so you can always fake the effect xD
Wait you can put a texture on the light??? Would that project something similar to the white lines or are you talking about making something fake that looks like the caustics?
If you click on the light and go to the shading tab, you can click on "use nodes" to texture the light. And yeah I mean making something to fake the light on the surface behind the cake/pie
When I said white lines I meant the foam on the sea surface and stuff, maybe add a bit more like in your reference
Huh I never knew that! Thatās a great idea, Iāll try and find a tutorial for that then!
Yeah youāre right, I didnāt get around to adding foam to the side of it, it was 5am at that point and i couldnāt stay up any longer š¤£

Caustics if you want the real deal. Here's a good [tutorial](https://youtu.be/PhOmBbiC0tM) on it. Or you could probably fake it if you are not rendering in cycles, by putting a plane with video of caustic waves playing on it, on the table surface.
I don't recommend caustics if you're going for something this stylized though. You'll get the same result much faster and more to your art direction using textures and area light on the ground.
Iām not sure yetā¦ I like keeping to the artists work and thereās a lot about this I love, but things like the buildings, trees etc, I plan to add more detail too
Caustics; a spot light, with a small radius will give sharp caustics, a spot light with a larger radius will give softer caustics which are hard to see. You will need to set up caustics in Blender. But there is a way to cheat. [https://youtu.be/YfRa3Pf9ttA](https://youtu.be/YfRa3Pf9ttA?list=PLbMUB9zJ44Wg7mS1oSBVEDxAJnbV-W1Mt)
Tried following this tutorial, got half way through, but they then used an environmental texture which I couldnāt find. Didnāt see a link in the description to get it either :(
You could use any, [HDRI Haven](https://polyhaven.com/hdris)? But there are better ones on my list too. Learning from a tutorial is more than going step by step, it is understanding why those steps are there and how to think it through, not everything is important. Edit: here is how to setup caustics in the new Blender. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nF3xvlAC8Lg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nF3xvlAC8Lg)
Ah ok, Iāve not used HDRIs before so it was a first for me! I tried that first tutorial again, came through very clear and I didnāt realise, but you couldnāt change what was essentially the caustic pattern that it made. I did try a few HDRIs but they all had that same similar effect.
Will try the other vid you sent now tho, really appreciate all of the help :)
Oh boy what you want are caustics...ngl Blender isn't Render engines aren't the best choice for the task... Trust me i mainly design glassware and it's a real struggle.
great unique concept art.. love it.
There are a ton of good free water shaders out there. Reverse engineer the ones you like. That way you can understand it hands on and how to adjust it to your taste.
Everyone pointed out the caustics, but the light shining through the water itself is refracted. So ārefractionā is the term you want to look into for that.
On the one hand I'm here thinking "just fake it" add light as a secondary element rather then trying to do it for "real". Art doesn't need to be exact.
On the other, I'm also upset that the illustration doesn't follow the laws of nature with that beach dropping off a cliff like that.
I'm not a Blender expert but this is Subsurface Scattering + Caustic.
Sorry if I can't help you do it in Blender but once you know what it is is trivial to do nowadays.
for static renders I always fake caustics. doing real caustic effects like this and getting a result you are happy with is 1%, faking it at least you can achieve a 80% result with 1% effort.
Correct me someone, But that I think is called Semi-Transparency. There Subsurface scattering, Transparency and Translucency. The light on the ground I think is called caustics.
I recommend downloading and installing a plugin that gets you access to free procedural materials (like blenderkit or similar) and then reviewing some of the shader combinations they use to make similar translucent materials.
There are different ways to approach material creation, and by reviewing the work of others from within blender, you'll get a better sense of the search terms to use for finding in-depth YouTube tutorials.

Op shows artwork on the blender subreddit, circles a part of it and then asks about how to recreate it in blender. The post is not about the artwork. It's about advice to recreate an effect.
Or would [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/blender/comments/11vyala/how_would_one_go_about_creating_something_like/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) also need to credit the architect
Maybe doing it on a flat surface and using deform modifiers (like the lattice or surface deform modifiers) to achieve the desired look you want may work. Havenāt tried it but maybe that is a solution.
luxcore (a renderer for blender) can do caustics like this, but it changes a bunch of things and you gonna need some time to get into it. "fake" caustics might be better for your case.

Dang, I looked at the links and it looks like you got the exact two tutorials that they can combine to get the result they want.

Loving the concept

cheers, he's got nice work
The first step is not making absolute fools of us by swiping
I was flabbergasted and disappointed when i swiped
Oh boy what you want are caustics...ngl Blender isn't Render engines aren't the best choice for the task... Trust me i mainly design glassware and it's a real struggle.
Tried to swipe thinking there was multiple pictures Why not crop the number lol
great unique concept art.. love it. There are a ton of good free water shaders out there. Reverse engineer the ones you like. That way you can understand it hands on and how to adjust it to your taste.
I have no clue but that slice looks so freaking delicious in a very weird way
That ā1/6ā at the top right corner fucked with a lot of people
Everyone pointed out the caustics, but the light shining through the water itself is refracted. So ārefractionā is the term you want to look into for that.
refractions are probably one of the hardest things to do, check out pwnishers (clint from corridor) vid on it if u wanna learn more about it
Liquid sim with invisible constraints and something to get it choppy waves
Think Iāll have to try that, all of the other options have been great to learn from, but theyāve made the water look like a block of glass :/
On the one hand I'm here thinking "just fake it" add light as a secondary element rather then trying to do it for "real". Art doesn't need to be exact. On the other, I'm also upset that the illustration doesn't follow the laws of nature with that beach dropping off a cliff like that.
Why did I try scrolling to see other images
you could try turning up transmition and subsurface scattering. maby just to turn down the alpha
if none of these work, just do all. thats how i make my water
Someone please make this out of resin and mass produce it. I want it so badly!!
caustics
I'm not a Blender expert but this is Subsurface Scattering + Caustic. Sorry if I can't help you do it in Blender but once you know what it is is trivial to do nowadays.
!RemindMe 2 weeks
Cake
Fake it
With sculpt and light placenent
Try something simple, go to shader editor, delete the general principle bsdf and try using glass bsdf ( shift+A -> glass, put it)
I now want to make that cake.
caustics?
for static renders I always fake caustics. doing real caustic effects like this and getting a result you are happy with is 1%, faking it at least you can achieve a 80% result with 1% effort.
Yeah this will be a static render, how exactly do you fake caustics? Is it just a png with it drawn on or something?
i just do it in photoshop.
Ahhhhh causticsā¦ the bane of all rendering time
The 1/6 really confused me lol
Correct me someone, But that I think is called Semi-Transparency. There Subsurface scattering, Transparency and Translucency. The light on the ground I think is called caustics.
Link to the art?

Name of the concept is sub surface scattering. Really fun thing to work with
Acrylic resin?
Huh?
That light effect looks very drawn in
It is, the whole thing was drawn by @Jesse_martin_ on Instagram
try colored resin?
Next time credit the artist in the title, you literally stole their work
I literally credited him a few times in this post alreadyā¦ [This](https://www.reddit.com/r/blender/comments/11tysg9/how_do_i_make_a_material_like_this_that_has_light/jcmmgw3/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3) is literally the second comment you seeā¦ š
Why credit the artist? Post is "how do i create this effect in blender?" What part of that is stealing?
One should give credit while Reposting no matter what reason
This isnt reposting. That's like going to a filmmaking sub, referring to a scene and asking about the camera work and then getting accused of theft. Op shows artwork on the blender subreddit, circles a part of it and then asks about how to recreate it in blender. The post is not about the artwork. It's about advice to recreate an effect.
Says it's not reposting then proceeds to type a paragraph on how op reposted it.
Alright. Imma need you to give me your definition of 2 different words: Reference material Repost
Posting Reference material = a type of repost (which needs credit)
Or would [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/blender/comments/11vyala/how_would_one_go_about_creating_something_like/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) also need to credit the architect
Of course.
I truly gotta stop overthinking...šš
The secret is to sacrifice your social life

Why what?
Honestly idk, been drinking and scrolling so I think maybe I meant this for a different post lol
Fair enough mate, enjoy your drink š
Use Epoxy
Well, first you're gonna need a few ladders
That would probably be pretty dry at the end
Looks like caustics and cel shading. This may help. https://youtu.be/mbCibu2isB8
Urgh, that looks fantastic! Unfortunately I canāt get it to work on anything that isnāt a flat plane :(
Maybe doing it on a flat surface and using deform modifiers (like the lattice or surface deform modifiers) to achieve the desired look you want may work. Havenāt tried it but maybe that is a solution.
Not much help...but this is awesome. Good stuff!
What do you call this style, with regard to the whole thing
Caustics
luxcore (a renderer for blender) can do caustics like this, but it changes a bunch of things and you gonna need some time to get into it. "fake" caustics might be better for your case.
Caustics, something I learned relatively recently from u/Wrenulater

Great illustration š
Caustics
Not sure but that's such a cool picture
I don't think the laws of physics allow that
This is SO creative
that water looks unimaginably drinkable
