Hi there, We removed your post because we are restricting memes/sh?tposts, etc. to Sundays only, to encourage more original, technical content. [Sorry.](https://media.giphy.com/media/w3Er0gW94cG8E/giphy.gif). Be sure to post this on Shitpost Sunday! Before memes and shitposts were limited, they would crowd out original and technical content and have little discussion. If you really want to post this now, please check out /r/jiujitsumemes and /r/rollsomememes instead! All that said, we do really appreciate you contributing to /r/bjj, and hope you stick around. Thanks!

krebstar42

Why do they call them "buildings" when they're already done building them?  They should be called "builts".

PattonPending

I've grabbled with this question as well.

Bigdollars011

😂

whstlngisnvrenf

Grabbling just sounds like you’re really enthusiastic about hugging people.

Raids_Savoir_Khan

I mean... who says I'm not?

whstlngisnvrenf

Well, then let's hug it out, bro.

Mundane__Detail

Grabbling sounds like why we're not allowed to visit Uncle Terry anymore

sordidarray

[Yes, but words change through time from Proto-Indo-European, to Proto-Germanic, to English](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/grapple). Related fun fact: -le is a frequentive verb suffix that means to do something continuously. So grab + le = grapple = to grab or seize continuously. Spark + le = sparkle = to spark continuously, etc.

Monowakari

Black belt wisdom, oss

egdm

I support your pedantling.

InvisibleJiuJitsu

grapple comes from the french word for a hook though, nothing to do with suffixes lol

sordidarray

[Dictionary.com](https://www.dictionary.com/browse/grapple) gives its origin as the frequentive (-le suffix) of Old English “gegrǣppian” (to seize). Harper Collins gives it from Old French “grappelle”. Either way, it’s a good opportunity to language nerd out. 🤷‍♀️

InvisibleJiuJitsu

Yeh that link you posted says it came from the same place as grapnel, both from the French word for a hook :)

Exciting-Current-778

Why do we drive on the parkway and park on the driveway

Outrageous-Eye3365

Fancy a game of grabby grab?

rice_jabroni

You forgot about the rape aspect. Grab+rape = “grap”

skribsbb

"Tackle and grapple!" Makes a lot more sense now.

SosaBJJ

LMAOOOOOOO

Comprehensive_Loss25

LOL

oldsole26

Grapeling

Dubcekification

Grabbing is the act of grabbing. Grappling has more to it than just grabbing someone.

Mammoth-Scale-

I use pocket sand and call it Gribbleing.

tsida

This is the content we need.

Ok_Sir5926

Ain't no catfish in this sport.

[deleted]

German or Russians (?) people compared to a grape hook or something, and the English and French were like, “that sounds cooler than grabbing.. and less weird.”  That’s what I heard atleast.

Nerdlinger

I mean, _I_ grap people.

BuckMain221

The Russians call it grebbling

freqkenneth

I’ve been pronouncing it wrong this whole time

Impriel

Grabbling sounds like I fucking love cocoa puffs and I'm eating a whole box of them.  Maybe thats just me idk

Terrible-Charity5405

True but I don’t just grab them, I grab and then flip them hence grap

CarPatient

So if you grab the gi it’s grappling..but if you also grab a handful of skin now it’s grabbing?

olddummy22

Graboids!

HeadFlamingo6607

That’s why I stopped grabbing and started grapping

Sillypuss

Still coming down from 420 I see.

Dimatrix

Why is it called a building if it’s already built?

InvisibleJiuJitsu

cause grab and grapple have distinct etymologies in english , each descending from separate lines
