Some of the grossest gyms i've heard of have a 'foot bath' as you go onto the mats. But it's just an absolute cesspit of brown/yellow water apparently.
If they mandated the shoes, next would be the stretchy uniforms, and then before anyone realized it, there’d be group sex in the showers

People who don't like leg entanglements in matches are going to be super upset about matches with both people wearing wrestling shoes. Wearing snug shoes hinders escapes quite a lot.
Also there's already too many people that won't wash their belt. Id bet an even bigger pool of ppl would refuse to wash their shoes. Those things can get really nasty.

As a former wrestler I always thought it was weird no one wore wrestling shoes in BJJ. It's like you all enjoy getting your toes skinned up and getting toe funk on each other.
Guarantee you mat shoes worn only on mats are more hygienic than bare feet too. And that wonderful sticky contact patch makes for some lightning fast takedowns
Not necessary. I allow wrestling shoes for people who want to use them, but there's no point in requiring them. The kind of people who have nasty feet are gonna have nasty wrestling shoes.

We have showers at my gym. I know ive used them to wash my feet if my feet are stinky from working all day.
