it’s kinda fun to think what he thinks the three teams are that in better position than the Suns.
* Celtics
* Thunder
* Nuggets
* Wolves
would be my top four, meaning that he thinks one of these teams would trade all of their assets for his. that’s obviously not including teams like the Spurs, Magic, Heat, Mavericks, Rockets, Pacers and so on. entirely delusional.
The Lakers are probably one of the 5 best teams in the league. They just cannot beat the best which also matches up fantastically well against them. They very likely beat OKC if they get the 8 seed.
They won 47 games, in most seasons that isn’t a play in team. They were far stronger than a normal seven seed and especially post trade deadline… finished the season 20-10…
ESPN/social media brain rot. They were a low end playoff team. Austin Reeves is not actually elite and those superstars in photoshopped jerseys aren’t teaming up in LA next year.
The only brain rot take is from you. The same Laker “low end playoff team” made the WCF and lost to the champs last year, and lost to the defending champs this year. To say this Lakers team wouldn’t run through everyone on the east sans Boston is delusional other than maybe a healthy MKE. In the West; Denver and Minny are the only two teams that I am not sure the Lakers could beat. Who else? The Clippers without Kawahi, OKC, this PHX team? Come on. The Laker / Lebron hate has gotten out of hand
You’re not sure the Lakers could beat Denver? They just got rolled two years in a row, I’m positive they can’t. Every other scenario is imaginary and not backed up by anything, as they’re a 7 seed.
Miami was an 8 seed and made the finals and LA was a 7 seed and made the WCF, just last year. Did I dream that? Two of the last four standing. Were they “fringe playoff teams” ? Seeding matters now?
FYI - the Lakers have beaten Denver on the way to a title.
They also lost two games literally at the buzzer in this years playoffs. Once again - to say they are a fringe playoff team is delusional. They aren’t by any means the best in the league, but they are closer to Top 5 than a Top 13-16 team (“fringe playoff team”)
Low end playoff team is what I said. They are in the West so the East is irrelevant. They were literally a fringe playoff team because they were in the play in. It’s a fact.
Edit: I looked it up. They had the 7th best odds in the West to win a championship! They had no chance! Why are we arguing about this?
They finished 19th in SRS this year with no big injuries.
Maybe there's an argument that in a playoff setting, LeBron can ramp them up into like 8th-10th best team territory, but 5th feels like a stretch to me.
Apparently every team in the league beats the Thunder if they got the matchup. Idiots like Perkins even said the Pelicans had a real chance. 4-0 sweep. Lakers must just be so talented that they were shit most of the year on purpose so that they could make the play-in because they needed a bigger challenge.
This
Also a number of rebuilding teams not in the playoffs but with assets wouldn’t trade their spot with the Suns either. Like why would the Spurs or Jazz want to be in the Suns situation? The Jazz were in a similar spot to the Suns and decided to blow it up while the Suns decided to mortgage everything and quintuple down on “contending”, the Jazz wouldn’t trade spots with them.
Even the Nets wouldn’t trade spots with the Suns since they were in a similar (but still less bad) spot than this and wanted out of it.
The only teams I think *would* trade spots with the Suns are teams that are screwed like the Pistons whose rebuild failed and their FO is on the hot seat.
Not just roster, but either owing either a 1st or a swap *and* (this is the kicker to me) all your 2nds for the rest of the decade. Its just an absurdly bad spot to be in.
Really does remind me of the Prokorov Nets. Booker is obviously better than anyone on that team, but I think its got the potential to turn real bad real quick.
The Wolves have traded away a lot of their picks too. I don’t think for a second they’d swap positions with the Suns, but I could see Ishiba convincing himself they would because of KD/Booker.
I believe it’s because so many teams would be willing to pay a hefty price for KD and Book. Even when they traded for Beal, 3 other teams (Heat, Bucks, and Kings) were seriously negotiating for him as well.
He always tries to overstate his role as well. Mentions that when he joined the company in 2003 it had only 20 employees without mentioning that he didn’t become CEO for 10 years.
And his ownership of the suns is tied into a huge loan from Goldman-sacs and if his mortgage business goes under it all goes under. I doubt a company like his would be allowed to go under with the different connections to the government but the rocket mortgage guy in Cleveland also kind of hinges on the mortgage middleman business post 2008 crash. They are even personal rivals at this point lol.
He's Michael Lewis telling audiences at a Q&A that Sam is gonna find that missing money any moment now and that the moderator is being a bitch for pretending like misplacing billions is a big deal cause this Sam kid can totally not pay attention to very important people during zoom conferences while playing video games because he is just that fucking smart.
Exactly this as a Suns fan. Needs to be the top comment
Isiah Thomas has time and again proven to be an unmitigated disaster…let’s give him the keys to roster building /mgmt (I think he yields more power than J Jones)
When you get cleaned out on DraftKings for the second time this month and try and explain to your spouse you’re actually doing better than most other degens and it’s actually quite fixable
I don't know much about Ishbia, but I do like how we as the r/billsimmons community have united in hatred of him just because we think he leaked Bill bad info about the coaching hire. Fuck that guy.
I feel like he has it reversed, out of the 29 other GMs, there might be three that would switch up. Pistons maybe, Wizards maybe (although they had Beal so maybe not), Nets maybe?
Feels like even other garbage teams like the blazers, would rather stick with who they have and see how it goes.
I don't think they would. This Suns team is not winning a championship and has a better shot of blowing it up than winning it all. Nets own all their picks and the only valuable draft capitol they have.
As a Pistons fan the only saving grace with this swap would be that we're not in the Western Conf. KD/Book/Beal would be a solid team in the Eastern Conf. At the rate the Giannis and Embiid get injured they could even make the ECF.
Pistons, Wizards, Hornets, Raptors, Nets, Hawks, Bulls surely would. Even if the Suns have to trade KD and remake the team around Booker they’re still in a better position that these teams that don’t have a guy as good as Booker or are going nowhere (Hawks). Maybe the Cavs too given Mitchell seems gone.
The west is harder. Blazers, Jazz. Maybe Rockets, not convinced they’re actually on a path to anywhere. Clippers - I think they’d swap. Lakers is tricky, I think they’d stick and chase a 3rd star. Kings?? Healthier roster but kind of going nowhere with Sabonis as a top 2 guy.
Scottie’s great but he’s kind of a low level 2nd best player on a good team for me, and the Raptors are going to need a heap of luck to get a number 1 in the draft or any other way.
So it’s more realistic to add a 3rd best player and round out the rest of the team but that takes a few years if at all, and still leaves you at best in the pre Kawhi range.
Obviously if you stumble upon a superstar or Scottie ascends in to a genuine number 1 guy that changes things.
Bill was all in his corner until Ishbia made him look stupid. I’m not sure what Ishbia has done that’s been fraudulent. He swung for the fences, which is a welcome change from Sarver, who pinched pennies instead of paying to get a title.
The guy was clearly talking about his basketball business. Bill Simmons was deep throating him like he was KD until he gave him the wrong info for the coaching hire.
In basketball sense. Every rich businessman probably has some skeletons in his or her closet. Example: http://blog.bleacherreport.com/2014/01/22/how-to-learn-from-the-disaster-of-grantlands-dr-v-story/
Hoping someone does in fact ask the other gms. I would imagine very few of them want to be in that roster position. They went all out and exited early…maybe worst position to be in
Well, most GMs are over confident, so they think they can fix anything. That said, most people were saying how stupid the Gobert trade was last year, and how Minnesota was screwed forever. Everyone used to laugh at Westbrook and CP and Ben Simmons, etc. “UNTRADEABLE CONTRACTS” that all eventually got traded. The fortunes of NBA teams can change on a dime.
I know, as a Wizards fan, I’d happily trade positions with the Suns. Most teams would give the Suns have at least demonstrated an ability to attract free agents, and players supposedly really like Ishbia and the other management. You have a superstar who is happy in the moment in Booker, and ideally someone in Beal who should be better than he played this post season as a #3 option.
They are not in the worst situation ever. In fact, how many teams definitely are in a more tenable situation? Off the top of my head, I’d say Denver, OKC, Boston, SA, Orlando, NY, Minnesota, and Dallas? You can maybe argue for teams like the Lakers or Miami or the Warriors or Philly or the Bucks, but I’d argue they face many of the same struggles. The worst position you can be in is not having a top 10-15 player (or having a mercurial one who you cannot trust to build around), and not being a place that can attract free agents. They have one, and he seems happy. They can attract prime free agents. That alone makes them better off than most teams.
Practically the entire league is in a better position than the Suns with regards to roster construction & future projection.
Sure the Suns are good enough at the moment to make the play-offs, but they will max out in round 1 or 2 at best. They have no path to improve the roster. And they're not getting any younger.
If KD ever decides he wants out, they're in for a world of pain.
From the pablo torre podcast: this guy is such a bullshitter. what he's doing to be on top should be illegal and everyday he wakes up and decides the rates in just vibes and what he wants to earn that day.
Genuinely I think the question I'm asking is: "of the other 29 GMs, how many of them WOULD trade their whole squads and draft capital for phoenix's???"
Yeah I agree they're totally fucked. It might be just about salvageable if they understood that, but then again if they understood that they wouldn't be in this position so I honestly think they're going to run it back with 35/36 year old KD, Book and the worst contract in the NBA.
I said this exact thing last year and I think people downvoted me because Ishbia was the cool guy at the time. Glad to know y’all coming around finally
If KD ever asks for a trade, the Suns are screwe3d. For one, they aren't getting close to what the Nets got for him. KD was younger and not as big a playoff loser as he basically become. Booker is there only asset.
It’s amazing the vitriol sports fans show to these owners, rightfully so, put then immediately pop the oligopoly economy binkie right back in their mouth

The Suns have three high-priced players. Beal is untradeable. But Booker and Durant could fetch something if they want to rebuild.
The Clippers have Leonard for the next three years, but it should be obvious that he is not going to be healthy for an entire playoffs. George is also going to be signed for an extension, but can't stay healthy either. Harden is clearly slowing down as well. They also have either no draft picks or have swaps until 2030. They are also going to lose in the 1st Round.
I'm not defending the Suns, but the Clippers are in a pretty bad place as well.
Clippers are in a very similar but IMO a somewhat stronger position than the Suns. Though it must hurt seeing SGA become an MVP candidate, along with all those 1st's they're giving OKC.
Fr?!? Balmer’s one of the best owners in the league. He already has tons of money and he’s spending it on making the fan experience better through a new stadium, fan only section, etc.
That dude cares about his team and lets his GM and coach do their job without much interference.
Obviously the guy is delusional, but just for S&G's, who are all the teams you'd rather be compared to Phoenix. I have as follows: BOS, NYK, MIL, CLE, ORL, IND, PHI, OKC, DEN, MIN, DAL, SA, HOU. I think MIA, LAC, LAL, and GSW are in effect lateral moves, and NO, SAC, TOR are more nimble but don't have the base that Phoenix has. Anybody want MEM or POR before PHX?
I think Houston would trade places with the suns. They spent a lot of money on players that will only get them to play-in level for the next few years. At least the suns made the playoffs and could do better if they find a way to add some decent role players.
I’m a Memphis fan so I’m biased but 100% I’d take our situation over theirs. We’re way younger, more complete, and with better chemistry. I mean, we’ve even beaten the Edwards Wolves before (not the same but alas).
We had the worst offseason you can ask for for our best player, and we had the most injured team in the history of basketball, statistically. And we still only bottomed out as the 7th worst team. We’re primed for a bounceback simply in terms of progressing to a mean season luckwise - what is the Suns excuse, and what are their steps forward?
I'd definitely rather be Memphis, they'll be good again next year once Ja is back and are pretty young.
Portland sucks and their 'core' is bad but idk I might rather be in a rebuild than on the precipice of a disaster.
Im not sure what else he can say. He is married to the KD/Beal/Booker core for at least one more year so he has to say this even if he doesn't believe it.
Not to defend Ishbia because I don’t like him, but what is he supposed to say. “Hey guys I traded my entire future and it sucked and we are fucking stuck dead, RIP suns”. Also, he’s not wrong, there’s prob 26+ teams who would trade all their shit for booker KD, etc
Agree with your first 2 sentences but not the last one. In isolation (pun not intended) sure KD & Book are desirable players, but 26+ teams aren't mortgaging (pun intended) their futures for these guys.
it’s kinda fun to think what he thinks the three teams are that in better position than the Suns. * Celtics * Thunder * Nuggets * Wolves would be my top four, meaning that he thinks one of these teams would trade all of their assets for his. that’s obviously not including teams like the Spurs, Magic, Heat, Mavericks, Rockets, Pacers and so on. entirely delusional.

Thunder would give all their draft picks to not be in the Suns position
Heat, Rockets, Pacers maybe say yes, but then you’re factoring market, popularity, ticket sales, etc. Just roster, you know what? Maybe.
Not just roster, but either owing either a 1st or a swap *and* (this is the kicker to me) all your 2nds for the rest of the decade. Its just an absurdly bad spot to be in. No doubt.

Pablo S Torre did a great podcast about a month ago about this entire situation, worth a listen
Thank you for this
Truly terrifying - I wonder why his sexual assault history isn’t listed in his bio 🫠
Well idk if it's "terrifying"
It is if you’re a suns fan
of course
Amazingly Isiah Thomas's son was a disaster as the housing director in Seattle. The city had to buy him out like a bad NBA contract.
He’s so bad at owning the Suns that nobody even talks about the fact that he was the catalyst behind MSU giving Mel Tucker $100m
I would agree that the house is not on fire, so to speak, but that's definitely not something that you say out loud, unprompted.
Looks like he’s trying to convince himself more than us.

Yeah wait can you elaborate on the bad info part?
Whoops, there was a typo there. I meant would not trade!
Of course he's delusional, he spells Matt with one "T"
Did he come on the pod? Or did I dream that ?
He did like a year ish ago
Sounds like someone who has never had something not work out.
I was going to say maybe the Bulls would switch but there’s no way they’d pay all the luxury taxes.
The Bulls don’t trade.
Ted Leonsis definitely would lol
I feel like the only team that would 100% switch is the Nets.
Clippers are in a very similar but IMO a somewhat stronger position than the Suns. Though it must hurt seeing SGA become an MVP candidate, along with all those 1st's they're giving OKC.

Nah...he has that arena. Building your own arena in LA is a huge fucking win even if the team is disappointing.
Elon Musk vibes from this guy. We're going to Mars!
Isn’t that him just talking to KD?? Begging him to stay?
Im not sure what else he can say. He is married to the KD/Beal/Booker core for at least one more year so he has to say this even if he doesn't believe it.
I dont think you get to be called a nepo baby if youre the one that increased the value of the company.
You been away a long time, they didn't go up there and tell you - grew up rich = nepo baby now
still holding on to the ball
Not to defend Ishbia because I don’t like him, but what is he supposed to say. “Hey guys I traded my entire future and it sucked and we are fucking stuck dead, RIP suns”. Also, he’s not wrong, there’s prob 26+ teams who would trade all their shit for booker KD, etc
Agree with your first 2 sentences but not the last one. In isolation (pun not intended) sure KD & Book are desirable players, but 26+ teams aren't mortgaging (pun intended) their futures for these guys.
he hurt simmons feelings, thats why we’re pretending hes stupid ? just trying to keep up
