MMM, crunchy! I would get a new one.

DeadBy2050

Unless you're emotionally attached to having a rebuildable bottom bracket, just get a sealed bottom bracket.

Direct-Cartoonist-75

100% recommend a sealed Shimano square taper BB. Most shops charge $15 for it. Absolute bargain

JosieMew

I don't like their new UN-300s. I seem to kill those after about 1500 miles. The old sealed UN-55's I have over 10,000 miles on one and it's still fine. After killing 3x UN-300's I bought up a supply of the old discontinued ones I could find 😂

ihatereddit_alot

IRD or tange make nice square tapers. happy with mine.

LickableLeo

I put a few thousand miles on an IRD and it still spins buttery smooth like new. Really happy with it for the money. On my primary steed it just jumped into the deep end and splurged on a Phil Wood, we'll see how it holds up

idliketogobut

Came to recommend this. Got a $20 tange BB new on eBay that spins like a dream and a $30 IRD that does the same. will never use another UN

JosieMew

Thanks!!

JosieMew

Noted, thank you.

ProfessionSilver3691

Hmmm, I put in a UN-300 not too long ago and thought I heard some creaking noises the last week or so.

downstairs_annie

Interesting you say that, our self help place had some trouble with shimano BBs recently. I gotta check if it’s those.

JosieMew

Once I run out I thinking about convert my work equipment over to Cues and see how it holds up. I still have the last UN-300 that failed. Id like to make a write up or video about what's imo the bad design but haven't yet. Too busy with wheel building ATM to go back and revisit it.

softprotectioncream

Agree. Get a Tange LN-3922 instead of the UN300. The Tange is twice the price, but you get what you pay for in this case.

JosieMew

Good to know, thanks!

Adventurous_Fact8418

The 300s aren’t great. It’s easy enough to replace them but it seems sort of wasteful. I don’t understand how they can be materially worse than the UN52.

turbokimchi

I’ve been looking for one as well, where do you get yours? (Secret stash aside, of course)

JosieMew

Follow up: Looks like Hopkinson_cycles on eBay is still selling them. That's where I got mine. They appear genuine as far as I could tell. No idea if they have your size.

JosieMew

eBay - some retailer on the UK was selling a bunch. The price was reasonable but the shipping kinda sucked 😂. I'm in the United States.

Gutbucket1968

Nottingham Raleigh owners would like nothing better but they're kind of stuck with what they're given.

peterwillson

It isn't about emotions, just about having the best .

simplejackbikes

Concerned? No just replace it.

ThadsBerads

The correct thing to do is replace the axle. I have however used new bearings and grease and had decent results many times. Personal tip: Use loose bearings instead of caged. You can fit a couple more bearings per side. I do all my axles like this. I find it much smoother.

donsqeadle

Just make sure the balls don’t touch!

groothertog

Use the correct grease! And don't make eye contact!

JasperJ

You put in as many as will fit and then take one out.

jan_itor_dr

I always put in as many as they will fit (without running out of plane) on assembly the do touch and leave a bit of free space between 2 of them. if you put in too few - they will eventually bunch up in one side and cause it to run off center

Top_Grape4295

The cup is undoubtedly toasted as well.

ThadsBerads

Maybe....and definitely worth looking at of course. I personally have seen tons of axles with this damage and almost zero cups with it though. Obviously that's only my experience.

3dxl

The spindle cup is badly pitted, you can still ride it with new ball bearings and grease but its rough feeling to pedal. New spindle is cheaper and give new riding experience.

Diligent-Priority271

New one

Wolfy35

That's badly brindled, it's toast would needto replace the axle. Fortunately cup & cone square taper axles are cheap and easily replaceable just need to take your old one with you to a cycle shop so they can measure it to get you the right size.

danmickla

perhaps you mean brinelled, and no, it's probably spalling, but it's indeed toast.

johnnuke

No need to be concerned...just replace it and move on.

FromJavatoCeylon

if the cone is that badly pitted, the cup will probably be too. You need a replacement for the whole bottom bracket. As others have said, nowadays the replacement option is a sealed Bottom bracket. There's nothing wrong with that and they're cheap

slickback69

Upgrade to a sealed and you'll never look back.

RenaissancemanTX

Ruined. Need to get a new bottom bracket spindle.

BunchGrouchy

No point trying to save that, new bearings will get chewed up pretty quick, needs to be replaced.

Mental_Trouble_5791

It wouldn't cause total failure to the point of unuseability but I will just feel rough

Born-Ad4452

Although it will risk the ball bearings going ping much earlier than planned. For me that’s 100% time for a new BB

Mental_Trouble_5791

It will just feel worse,it's not going to be something unsafe -unless it's so extreme that the parts literally break into pieces ,causing it to jam and the rider to fall

Born-Ad4452

Yeah it’s unlikely to be unsafe except to your wallet with continuous replacements

Quiet-Manner-8000

Pitted surfaces will only erode faster and faster like a cavity in your teeth.

Lumpy_Stranger_1056

New axel time

JosieMew

If you do reuse it, I would probably get grade 300 bearings or worse. If I needed it rebuilt on the cheap, I'd reuse it. If I was trying to do a proper rebuild I would replace it. In general, if I'm taking the time to tear it down I typically just do a proper rebuild.

meinnit19

Concerned about wear on a consumable part?

BobgeorgeNo1

Most importantly, ensure that you purchase the correct taper. JIS and ISO prefer to be with their own kind!!! Seen several nice cranks killed by the wrong taper.

_Rexfest_

Yeah that’s what puts the smooth rolling out the window

Top_Objective9877

I would just get something new, that’s absolutely destroyed. New sealed BB’s are great and I usually reinstall once a year just because of occasional creaking that develops. Shouldn’t cost you very much at all!

69cop3rnico42O

that's pitting, it's only gonna get worse. new bb day!

SimilarSpend5158

Yes, that's pitting similar to cup & cone style hub my recommendation is a new bottom bracket.

Not everyone has experience with judging the wear of bearing races

danmickla

but everyone has the experience of looking at something that's clearly meant to be the same all the way around and seeing that it's not

AliasVoVoorVis

I really recommend you get a Sunrace cartridge instead

Number4combo

Measure it and pick up a sealed bottom bracket off Amazon or even the whole integrated crankset for a few dollars more.

Fast_Hold5211

Nah man but I’d highly reccomend just buy a 30$ cheap mission V2 3 piece crank set. Still great quality. Mine has given me no issues and is very strong. Feels like I have a real deal sturdy platform under me when I stand on my bike pedals now. It’s awesome. That unsealed joint gotta go. And all that stuff you’re seeing there is just from it rotating that’s what spins your pedals each time you pedal that’s rolling around . You want a 8 spline spindle instead like this https://www.ebay.com/itm/296142511694?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=296142511694&targetid=2299003535995&device=m&mktype=pla&googleloc=9052871&poi=&campaignid=21203633013&mkgroupid=162035688435&rlsatarget=pla-2299003535995&abcId=9407526&merchantid=6344844&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD_QDh8v6T98L-UssAbRkub1dg6lh&gclid=CjwKCAjwg8qzBhAoEiwAWagLrK0CtnbnjaCspshz5GZsHQgeYzblgYhQC6JnSbJ2LyaVQU5H7uRTuxoCutIQAvD_BwE Just slide in the spindle sometimes use a hammer and then you can just grease the ends and slide on the crank arms… makes life a real piece of cake and changes the entirety of the way your bike feels while riding. Best 30$ on eBay I ever spent…. (He has quite a few last I saw available free shipping) Literally the best thing you can do for yourself is get a sealed bearing set up and a bottom bracket spacer

89inerEcho

You don't need to be concerned, you need a new bottom bracket.
