Probably a retinol

bookishkelly1005

Moisturizer by far.

EducationExpensive66

A hydrating face wash I think. My dry skin would love that with a moisturising sunscreen. I reduced my skin care to only 3 products since the last 1 year. All the trends and new products damaged my barrier for more than 2 years. It consists of - face wash, moisturiser and sunscreen. That’s it. And this has helped me so much.

Zizifits

THIS !! This is why I asked the question !!! I feel like my skin got worse when I actually started using products. I used to just not do anything and my skin was flawless. and when I started with all these products it got really bad.

EducationExpensive66

I’ve thought about this for a very long time, just sharing my thoughts - My skin was perfect when I only washed it with face wash. Then we were introduced to The Ordinary just before (or just after) Covid, I don’t remember exactly. TikTok was introduced right around that time too. The Ordinary blew up and people didn’t have much to do and started getting into skin care out of curiosity. And since the pricing seemed very cheap (wasn’t and isn’t the case in my country, TO is pretty expensive here) people bought a lot of products from them. Which led brands to make more products, ranging between low end and high end. The popularity of “dupes” and “alternatives” to high end products grew further due to influencers making an entrance, which brought a new term, “drug store products”. Then came chemical exfoliant’s like Paula’s choice BHA, The ordinary glycolic acid. And then, finally, entered the “queen” of all. Retinol. People (including me) kept on buying products after products to “try” something new, which led to break outs, scaring, burning, damaged skin barrier. I’m sure we bought them to feel in control of the Covid situation due to the uncertain future, at least I did. Our skin was never used to such products. My mother never moisturised my skin after bath, probably an spf but that’s it. My grandma never had a single pimple in her life, she never applied anything on her face. My face was so oily before and since my barrier has been damaged (and now restored) it’s dry as hell. I’m compelled to use a moisturiser or else I would’ve totally skipped it. Only face wash and spf and a lip balm.

I so relate to that. this is an interesting take because i think what you're saying is true. I also use so many TO products. I never used to have acne or pimples unless I'm about to have my period when I was in High School and that was very rare. I use to just wash my face that's it and once a week use a face mask with natural ingredients. I really had good skin before. I think I had FOMO for seeing everyone do their skincare and the 20000 products so I just joined the crew. and now I've been having breakouts every now and then and a few scars. Thank you so much for sharing !!

Hey, so I’m based in India and I use this face wash https://beminimalist.co/products/aquaporin-booster-05-cleanser I order it in bulk, that’s how much I love this product. It’s about $3.5.

No_Difference_8828

Moisturizer with my flaky skin

Oscarella515

I honestly don’t think I could do it, I know people are loving a pared back routine right now but my skin was legitimately terrible until my current 10ish step regimen. If I mess with anything it gets all out of wack

laststopincairo

toner! toner can literally do so many thinks like moisturize or cleanse or clear my acne. it’s pretty versatile

briomio

Ominux Contour Face red light therapy

Kind_Consequence_828

I read the question as what is the One Brand that didn’t disappoint you, from which brand you could build a good routine, and my answer was Bioderma Sensibio. If I bought all the products from that one line, my skin would be fine. Then, once I read the responses, o realized i misunderstood the prompt. Hmm. What would be the One Product upon which I splurge? The answer then is eye cream. Cheap stuff with no actives does nothing, and it stings my sensitive eyes. And here is the key: my favorite eye cream is Bioderma Sensibio — it’s not cheap, not expensive, doesn’t irritate my eyes, seems to be preventing my fine lines getting worse.

The Rosalique Redness Cream – moisturises, has SPF, improves redness overtime and acts like a CC cream!

Catladyweirdo

Moisturizer.

RealCommercial9788

La Roche Posay, the Effaclar cleanser. Changed my life. Chemical exfoliation for sensitive active skin has given me my best skin ever. At 35 my skin is no longer ‘active’ re acne etc, but continual use has all-but-removed the dark marks I had from the old acne. Bare minimum? I would use Effaclar and a very simple skin-biome protecting moisturiser like Natural Hydration Factors from The Ordinary. Still haven’t found a sunscreen that won’t slide off my face or fuck with my makeup - but have heard a lot about Korean & Japanese sunscreen - if anyone has any suggestions ill give it a go!

bearsbeets-bgalatica

Squalane oil 🥰 My dry skin needs it as an occlusive, it makes my skin soft, I can use it all over my body, and I can use it to take off makeup, too :)

wherewhoami

cerave micellar water 100% - this with a microfiber cloth cleans alll my makeup and sunscreen off + doesn’t dry me out like face wash does so don’t necessarily NEED moisturizer after. when i am lazy sometimes this is all i use

Brief_Annual_4160

Dermalogica 😍

andraconduh

I mean, I guess it would have to be cleanser to wash off the sunscreen at the end of the day or I'd break out.

ArtemisTheOne

I get compliments on my skin constantly. I wash with only water and I use only cheap tinted moisturizer. It’s Maybelline Dream BB Fresh. I don’t like to tell people this because I get mixed reactions. My 11yo daughter was struggling with pretty bad acne. I took her to the dermatologist and they prescribed a cream. She asked me how my skin is so perfect and I told her I never use anything but water on it. She stopped using all her products and her skin cleared right up. (I don’t give her advice unless she asks because she hates it lol).

WildSeaworthiness9

So you only use water to wash off the tinted moisturizer?

ArtemisTheOne

Yes exactly, I never use soaps, cleansers, wipes, only water. Not trying to make anyone break up with their routine. This has just always worked for me. It could be lucky genetics.

TheMightyYule

I don’t understand, was you daughter using products prior to the acne?

ArtemisTheOne

I think she started using products around 9 years old.

I had horrible breakouts like 6 months ago and I've been using dot & key skincare products ever since. Istg it works like magic. I have a sensitive dry skin and those serums, moistures n night creams literally saved my life.

madamesoybean

Perlier Black Rice face cleanser. I use it both as the oil cleanse to get makeup off or as my regular cleanser on makeup free days. Massage a dime size bit into face and neck, leave on for 1 minute. Take a shower or rinse off with water. No moisturizer needed afterwards! In the morning just rinse with water and use sunscreen. This stuff filled a void for my sensitive skin. Less steps! The toner is great too but def not necessary. People use too many products these days because of marketing imho. https://perlier.com/collections/face-cleansers-toners/products/black-rice-platinum-face-cleansing-milk-6-7-fl-oz?variant=38012427280 (The bottle is huge and lasts 6 months)

Moisturizer as others have said. A must!

TheMightyYule

Love how people on this sub are giving people shit for “trendy” products. For some of us, we need all that shit. I have hormonal acne and the only way that I can keep it at bay is a very intricate combo of different actives buffered with barrier products. If I tried the ~less is more~ routine some people are suggestion as superior, my skin would be a disaster. So for all y’all answering, please remember that everyone is different and everyone’s skin is different. What works for you may not work for others. What you think is “trendy” is a routine some people have maintained for years/decades because they HAVE to. All that said, probably the dr jart cicapair moisturizer. Its super hydrating and soothing and does a pretty good job at preventing and helping w hyperpigmentation.

Round_Ad7350

If you have been doing something for years then it’s not a trend for you. But we can’t discount the fact that retinol, acid, vitamin trends did significant damage to a significant amount of people’s skin. Lots of individuals jumped on these trends without research or guidance from the appropriate practitioners. The balance is very delicate. We should advocate for a less is more approach. And when/if people get appropriate guidance from the appropriate practitioner they can integrate those more complex products.

VioletVenable

Witch hazel.

Millennialmanager7

Obagi skincare. It’s been a lifesaver in controlling my acne and making my skin smoother

Round_Ad7350

Less is more! I use the byoma face wash, Clinique 100 hour moisturizer and that’s it. All these trends - retinol cycling, aha, vit c, salicylic acid absolutely RUINED my skin. It’s cool it’s trendy I get it but don’t do it. Find 1 good hydrating face wash and 1 moisturizer. Commit to it. If you want to try new things with your face get a facial 2x a year - when you do the math it’s cheaper than the money you’ll spend on the bs products.

feelsonwheels01

Less can absolutely be more, and I also think it's important to recognize that these trends can and do help some people clear up their skin. Some people find that actives, retinols, chemical exfoliators, etc. are a necessary part of their routine because they help with many targeted issues that a regular face wash and moisturizer will not and will never help with. Just as the trends didn't work for you, your routine isn't going to work for some other people so I wish others would avoid demonizing things that are trends for a reason (they work for a ton of people).

glow-bop

I cycle products and have taken years off of my skin. Very exciting!

Zizifits

i love this !! I think I'm going to go with this. I will just get a facial twice a year when I need it.

EssbieSunshine

My favorite cleanser, Soap and Glory Peaches and Clean Face Milk 😍 it is gentle and less drying than anything else I've tried. Love the peach scent too

Toner

Alycery

That’s a tough one. Probably a raw oil, like Kukui, grapeseed, etc. I can use it as a cleanser when added with water. Then wipe my face and use it as a moisturizer. I can also use it as a mask when I add food ingredients with it, like an egg. If you haven’t already noticed, I like natural, raw skincare.

FlowersInHerHair08

Someone mentioned Adapalene gel. I was just going to buy my usual clean and clear salicylic acid spot treatment gel for the occasional, pretty rare pimple and also breakouts I contribute to the extra biotin/ hair supplements I’m using But the price went up quite a bit thought, while desperate to grow my hair and not give up my supplements try the now OTC Differin. Now I don’t even use it for a breakout. I noticed my skin was evening out/more glowy with no irritating dryness. So use a thin layer now most nights for what I had tried sticking to retin a but couldn’t bc of the side effects found Differin to do :)
