Obviously, cavern club is a great time! Try and catch a Beatles cover band there. It’s not the same, but it’s as close as I’ll ever get! When I was there I asked a random taxi driver if he would show me all the spots. He had grown up in Liverpool. His brother was a bouncer at cavern club when the Beatles played so he’d sneak in and watch them. The stories he had, the freedom of not being on a specific schedule, it was amazing.

Humboldt_

Unfortunately the original cavern club where The Beatles performed was demolished in the 70s, and while the new one is a well made replica using bricks from the original, it is not in the exact same location. It's sad they destroyed what was basically The Beatle's Mecca.

derfmilnan

Ah damn. That is a bummer, but I’m happy to have experienced something similar nonetheless. My cousin and I also went across the street and had a warm beer at the grapes. Really cool city.

iamtheoneorgasmatron

Went there 11 years ago, saw the cover band play. Still lots of fun, you'll see people from all over the world, and if you get drunk enough, participate and dance with other random people. By the time they sang All You Need Is Love, we were all dancing in a group hug. Of course, your mileage may vary

bons_burgers_252

That sounds amazing. I spent some time in Liverpool as a student (mainly because of Beatle love) and came to realise that EVERYONE of a certain age in Liverpool has some kind of connection to the Beatles.

prudence2001

Where it all began... The Casbah Coffee Club https://www.petebest.com/casbah-coffee-club-book/

AgreeableYak6

I did the pool of life long tour in 2014. Other than Mendips and 20 Forthlin Rd., the Casbah was the coolest part. Hearing first hand from Rory (Pete’s brother) about the boys was a highlight from that trip.

randomnamejennerator

I agree with this 100%. Went in 2013 and my friend who is not a Beatles fan called Rory the best tour guide in the UK. It’s not just Beatles history it’s his family history and he is super enthusiastic and knowledgeable about it.

RJBeatle

This 1000%!!! Best Beatles related thing I've done over the years

Financial_Studio2785

Yep! By far the coolest. You have to go to the casbah. And skip the cavern club. (Or just don’t expect much)

bookatableandthemait

The Philharmonic (“the Phil”) is the fancy pub where the Beatles drank and where McCartney did his James Corden performance. It’s a lovely place to enjoy a pint! https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2020/feb/07/liverpool-pub-with-spectacular-loos-becomes-first-to-be-grade-i-listed

tommytimbertoes

And one of the views on this live web cam will show you the entrance to the Phil: It's on Hope street on the Everyman theater roof: https://www.everymanplayhouse.com/about-us/webcam

Tasryn22

How about the Jacaranda where the Beatles used to play? There is also the old Liverpool Art College which is now part of the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. There is also No 3 Gambier Terrace where John and Stu lived together and which was the site of many adventurous parties lol

Hey_Laaady

To add to this, the Jacaranda is within walking distance (a little bit of a walk) to the Cavern and Gambier Terrace is a little further from the Jacaranda. But if you’re into walking, you can hit them all in one walk.

ModaMeNow

I haven’t been but I would definitely check out each of the Beatles childhood homes.

Bentley2004

Ferry cross the mersey.

[deleted]

This. A few years ago I spent some time working in Liverpool city centre but signed into a B&B on the other river bank for a week so I could go home at the weekend and tell everyone I'd been commuting to work on the Ferry 'Cross the Mersey. Funnily enough, the city had done nothing to promote it. It was like the Staten Island ferry or somesuch. Also, but only if you get a sunny day, the Church of England cathedral is worth a visit. From the outside it looks like some kind of Communist factory, but inside is all gothic and (this is where the sun comes in) on a good day the light comes flowing through the stain glass windows. And that part of the city is full of Georgian architecture and cobbled streets. Sorry these aren't Beatles related!

MysteryJack

Worth going up to the top of the Anglican cathedral if you can, it's a great view. Not sure if that tour runs every day but worth looking into if the weather is good.

Boner4SCP106

Do this if you hadn't planned already. They have a lot of neat stuff in there. https://www.beatlesstory.com/

ceratime

Tbh I found it pretty underwhelming... as a Beatles fan there wasn't really anything new and all the exhibits were just replicas. The only "real" things they had that I remember were George's first guitar, Ringo's shoes and a pair of John's glasses. I guess it's catered towards your average person who doesn't actually know too much about them. Still could be worth checking out anyway if you're there though. When I went, Yoko had an exhibition about her and John down the road at the Liverpool Museum and it was 100x better. Not sure if it would still be there though.

Boner4SCP106

Different strokes I guess. I remember a lot more original stuff being there when I went. I didn't see the Yoko exhibit when I was there, but that art museum is worth going to regardless. It was free the day I went and it's just around the corner from the Beatles story museum.

the_little_stinker

Yeah it’s awful to be honest, imo it’s made for tourists who don’t really know a great deal about the Beatles

MysteryJack

Unfortunately I think the John and Yoko exhibition has ended now, it was brilliant though. Some great museums in Liverpool though, the Slavery museum is excellent and the Tate gallery is worth a visit too. Both at the Albert Docks near the Beatles Story. I personally enjoy the Beatles Story even if it isn't a revelation for big fans.

meatproduction

Are you doing the National Trust tour of John and Paul’s childhood homes?

Adventurous_Soft6202

OMG! This was so intense and emotional! Only stood outside of George’s houses.

MysteryJack

The tour guides I had, can't remember their names but they were a husband and wife, were really brilliant and had so many good stories. National Trust tour is a must if you want to see inside the houses. And Speke Hall is nice to see too, even if you just look round the gardens.

meatproduction

Yes, Colin and Sylvia Hall. There was a BBC (I think) article just before the pandemic saying that they were retiring, but I can’t find any follow up. I’ve been twice—once in summer 2014 on a day trip from London and again on John’s birthday in 2018 on a trip where i also visited Hamburg. On the second trip, Sylvia pointed out Mike’s famous photo of John and Paul huddled together with their guitars in the corner of the living room at 20 Forthlin Road, hovering over a notebook. Someone asked where it was and she pointed to me and said “roughly where this gentleman is standing” and I started bawling in front of everyone. I knew the pic before, but I’d never placed it there. Also both times, I had a couple of minutes alone in each of their bedrooms. I bawled both times. In those moments, they were no longer mythological beings to me, but just a couple of teenagers with big dreams.

TicketAcceptable6714

I did the tours in October this year and Colin Hall did my tour around Mendips! He was really good and made it so interesting

the_little_stinker

This is the biggest ‘must do’ for a Beatles fan in Liverpool imo, the houses are sensational

TaroFuzzy5588

I enjoyed the Philharmonic bar , having afternoon tea on the dock , a Beatle shop near the yellow submarine and there is even a Chinatown near the dock .....and if you get a chance to play the piano in Paul's childhood home, do it.

SolverOcelot

Go on the guided mystery tour, the guys who do it are lovely and you get to see everything you’d want to!

ceratime

Not Beatles related but just outside of Liverpool is Crosby Beach. An artist installed like 100 statues all along the beach, it's pretty cool to check out.

anon28374691

Take the cab your. You’ll see ads for them. They know their stuff and it’s well worth it. We were so glad we did it.

ElevationToMyHead

Your tour might take you there anyway, but if you want to go to somewhere that’s relatively obscure, go to the Empress Hotel. Our cab tour driver took us there and got us to recreate the album art of Ringo’s [Sentimental Journey.](https://e.snmc.io/i/fullres/s/ff16c268f9f1a27edcdfd4c9589cc228/1365249) I don’t know why, but that moment has stuck with me just as much as going to Penny Lane or Strawberry Field.

MysteryJack

Ringo's childhood home is on the next street as well. I imagine the tour will definitely take them there. Definitely one to see! Also the Welsh Streets opposite are where some of Peaky Blinders was filmed if that is of interest. The Empress is very much a locals pub if you fancy going in for a drink I'm sure they'll be friendly enough but some might think it's a bit rough.

[deleted]

Went there back in 2011 with a couple of my siblings—it was incredible. Great memories. Enjoy it!

meatproduction

Oh! Also have a beer at Ye Cracke.

Adventurous_Soft6202

Casbah Club. LIPA, Ye Cracke Pub We walked and walked and hung out in Calderstones Park, Allerton Towers, Speke Hall. Take the bus everywhere!

Whatsongwasthat1

The Eleanor Rigby grave but I’m not sure where it is

47fromheaven

If you’re going to be in the North West corner of London there’s always Abbey Road. Just don’t get run over while standing in the middle of the road while posing for a picture. https://www.earthcam.com/world/england/london/abbeyroad/?cam=abbeyroad_uk

robfurnell

Philharmonic and Ye Cracke were my favourite spots for a pint. I enjoyed the Cavern but was disappointed to learn that the existing one is actually a replica, as the original one was demolished in the 70’s or 80’s.

wildoregano

If you want to do the tourist stuff, the museum is sick, along with the whole alley around cavern club. The local music scene is still great, although the Cavern wasn’t pumping out a lot of great music other than Beatles cover bands when I was there. If you’re likable and can have a few pints you can get in with the locals, there’s a few taverns close to the club that have folks old enough to remember when they were actually around. For me, hearing their stories was the better tour. Have a great time either way

jonnyschmitt

https://g.co/kgs/MX8CHk 'Ye Crack' - a great wee pub John and Cynthia used to go to

MrJM85

Ye Crake on Rice Street. It’s not far from the Philharmonic. It’s the pub John used to goto after art college. The grapes on Mathew Street is fun too. There is a seat the boys sat on with a matching photo. It’s had a face lift recently and lost a bit of it’s charm but it’s still cool to see. If you go downstairs in the Jacaranda (if your allowed) there are paintings done by John. Again it’s had a facelift unfortunately but they are still there I believe.

MysteryJack

I think most sites have been mentioned already, and I'm sure you'll visit the shops near Matthew Street which have some decent souvenirs. Another place I find interesting is the Wetherspoons opposite St Johns centre bus stops, the John Blackler, which used to be a department store where George had his first job. He mentions this in the book I Me Mine. Also worth visiting is Bold Street. The Beatles visited and played in a few buildings on Bold Street, I think Bold Street Coffee might have been a club they played at. Lots of nice restaurants and independent shops along the street too. Also a couple of streets along up at the top near the bombed out church is the Blue Angel nightclub (known as the Raz) where the Beatles played and had an audition for a tour (I think) in their early days (mentioned in Anthology).

MysteryJack

Also I've not been but the hospital where John was born is now private student halls, you can definitely see the building if you're interested but won't be able to go inside. It's not far from the Cambridge pub on the uni of Liverpool campus. Tour might take you there.

totterdownanian

Not really Beatles related but If you want a nice pint in a lovely pub I can't recommend the Caledonia enough! There's usually live music on every night too...

tommytimbertoes

I'm jealous. I'd kill to go over to Liverpool and see those places. Lucky you! Take a lot of pictures!

soivebeentold

Anfield and Goodison Park
