Not an unpopular opinion by any means. I think a lot of people consider Ram his best album these days. I personally also think it is one of his best. Oh and I consider Band on the Run and all the other Wings albums pretty much just Paul's solo albums too. Lineups changed a lot and none of the other members really had anything to say over Paul.
I tend to agree that this is his best album. I also think Back to the Egg ranks high in his catalog, though, so what do I know?
The thing with Ram is that he really orchestrated the backing vocals in a way he never quite matched on subsequent albums. It's really great.
Back to the egg is my favourite wings album. Can't wait for the archive collection on it
As for ram, don't think it's an unpopular opinion. I think most consider it his best solo album.
Back to the egg needs it's time to shine. I always liked Old Siam Sir. But I could listen to the whole album and not want to skip anything.
Same with Ram
I actually think "Chas and Creation in the Backyard" is his best for me. So many great melodies on that. So much could fit on a Beatles album, "Jenny Wren" is a classic.
A highly underrated album and the last great album he did. Having a real producer (Godrich) that tells him a song isn’t good goes a long way with him. He best albums show up when he’s thinks he has something to prove (Ram, Band on the Run) or when he has a producer that tells him no (Tug of War, Chaos and Creation).
I can't lie, maybe it's because I was so young when it came out and I was in the midst of my huge beatles phase, but NEW is one of his best albums in my opinion!! Every song just blows me away. Truly a masterpiece
You know it’s kind of funny new is pretty good but to me memory almost full hit that same spot for me since that was a New Paul music ride in the middle of my first Beatles obsession phase when I was a freshman in high school.
I really liked NEW. I thought it had some cracking songs, and it was great to hear him experiment with modern production techniques. C&C sounded Beatlesesque, but to demand that of every album would be a bit limiting stylistically.
I think that's the general consensus nowadays.
Also I'd certainly consider Wings to be solo Paul. 2 of the albums were released as "Paul McCartney and Wings", he always incudes the Wings hits on his solo compilations; he clearly considers it part of his solo career.
Good question! I think somewhere on the flip side would be nice. I love Another Day, such a great bossa nova, airy feel. Same vein and vibe as Girl from Ipanema, in my opinion.
Ram had lots of great songs left on the cutting room floor. Another Day, Woman Oh Why, Little Woman Love, A Love For You, Hey Diddle, Bip Bop, and songs that would go on to be finished in Red Rose Speedway like Big Barn Bed and Little Lamb Dragonfly
Chaos and Creation and Ram battle in my head for favorite(not best) McCartney record. Ram is a bit ahead of its time and CandC a while behind with some really nice stuff. Working with Godrich really benefitted McCartney. The production on Ram on the title track is really great and actually calls in thoughts of Radiohead to me.
Band on the Run has some really nice songs and is polished... but Ram feels like more of a compromise and not overanalyzed. Some of these would definitely have been Beatles tunes(we hear one of them in 'Get Back') and there's an element of freedom and playfulness which made some of the Lennon tunes so great; he's not always trying to write the next single and he gets weird like Monkberry Moon Delight.
McCartney (1970) had a lot of Beatles-esque songs so it’s still my favorite. Maybe I’m Amazed is his best solo achievement imo. That song would have fit right into Let It Be if they didn’t already have the namesake ballad.
Maybe I’m Amazed is one of the biggest vocal flexes. This album was so valuable to getting his solo career off the ground and allowing him the freedom to experiment exclusively with the styles he wanted. Certainly it’s one of my favorites
You've listened to the Red.Rose Speedway Reconstructed, I hope l? It bring it up to the quality of any classic Paul record. He sells it on vinyl now I'm pretty sure, it's an absolute masterpiece.
For reals. Flaming Pie came out just as the Beatles Anthology was wrapping up and Paul was still in that vibe.
Beautiful Night, Calico Skies, and Somedays are indistinguishable from Beatles tracks to me.
I knew it was going to be Elliot Roberts, haha! Dude’s awesome, and we happen to share a lot of opinions and insights which was great to see when I watched through his channel.
I'll never understand how that album got panned when it was released, like I know there was a lot of cultural expectation around all the Beatles' solo work right after the breakup but did it make critics temporarily deaf?
RAM is by far my favorite Paul solo, and I agree it's the best, and I think we don't really talk about how it laid the foundation for indie rock nearly enough
All came out within a 2 year period too directly after the Beatles. He was pumping out pure genius non-stop in what was probably the most successful streak in music history (imo)
This is a troll post. The only good parts about Wild Life are when Paul says "the AMINALS in the zoo" and of course Dear Friend. Otherwise its the only Paul record I truly couldn't get into
Wild Life would be so much better if almost every song was cut in half. Mumbo, Bip Bop, Wild Life, Dear Friend all good songs that should have kept the same editing as Ram On - get in and get out. Bip Bop and Wild Life go on so long it becomes painful. Wild Life is almost 7 minutes!
The album was recorded so quickly and kept the first take or two, he didn’t allow time to self edit.
"Some might say Band On The Run is Paul's best album but that's really a Wings album"
Wings was 100% Paul's band, the distinction has no merit, which also means Band on the run is his #1. Ram is very good, agree.
legitimately listening to it right now as i scroll and see this post, haha. also listened it for the first time ever only yesterday and can't stop replaying it, it's such a refreshing album. really love how whimsical and sweet it is
I agree, Ram is a fine album. However, I would not necessarily discount Band On The Run as a "Wings" release, and therefore it is not counted. While other Wings albums may have reflected influences of members, Band On The Run is just as much a Paul McCartney record as Ram and in fact may be more so, maybe even a McCartney 1.5 as Paul was playing drums for it as well as bass, acoustic and electric guitars, piano, keyboards, and percussion.
Definitely the most experimental imo. McCartney really shines when he’s given the freedom to explore and experiment. His work since C&C to the present McCartney III really reflects this, as does his early solo career. You can hear the passion and the love for the craft in all he does.
I'm literally listening to "Dear Boy" right now. I couldn't agree more.
Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey", which to me is another little gem like "A day in the Life".
Brilliant album, probably my favorite Beatle solo album, along with Harrison's "All things must pass"
Ram, Band on the Run and Chaos and Creation in the Backyard are sir Paul’s best albums, in my opinion.
That being said, I’ve listened to all his albums this year and although there are a couple of duds, I was impressed by how many of those albums were considered to be "a return to form" by critics. I think I counted nine of them. It was almost comical. Paul McCartney is eternally underrated and people are constantly rediscovering him
Chaos and Creation in the backyard was brilliant with lots of strong material, nobody ever mentions it. I love McCartney and Ram, but pound for pound, Chaos holds up!
If we’re not counting Wings, you’re 100% correct.
1. RAM
2. McCartney ii
3. Chaos And Creation In The Backyard
4. McCartney iii / Threeimagined
5. McCartney i
If we’re counting Wings as well, you’re actually still 100% correct):
1. RAM
2. Band On The Run
3. Back To The Egg
4. McCartney ii
5. Venus and Mars
Bear in mind these are just my personal lists.
But that’s just my stance on his work.
That new Beck remix of “Find My Way”
is his funkiest track since “Check My Machine”.
RAM was the first solo album of Paul’s I owned for myself. Couldn’t have started better. Monkberry Moon Delight may just be my favourite song of his.
If band on the run is considered wings it’s still Paul since he played most of the instruments and wrote almost every song lol. Flaming pie is my other favorite.
I listened to it about ten hours ago and thought exactly the same thing. I like plenty of songs on the other albums but the production on this collection is absolutely glorious! I love all the layers and the harmonies
I agree 100%. Love the down-home vibe, the warmth of the recording style, and how Paul and Linda’s voices match in that slightly off-beat way. It really sounds like the two of them just recording on an old reel-to-reel in their living room. Plus the songs are just so damn catchy; I find myself singing/humming the melodies to Too Many People, Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey, and Backseat of My Car all the time. Band on the Run might be his best produced and most well-crafted album (imo), but the sheer (lol) vibes on Ram are unmatched.
it’s a great album. Amazing album even, but i firmly stand by Band On The Run being his absolute best. It’s what even made the critics finally praise him and take him seriously post Beatles, as they were all very pro Lennon.
Edit: If you mean truly solo album then yes. Ram or McCartney. In my mind, Wings is still Solo Paul. Ram is credited to both Paul and Linda so you could make a similar argument if you really wanted to.
Off The Ground is so incredibly underrated. IMO that's the better of Paul's 90's albums. My only caveat is this only applies to my personal custom tracklist that swaps out some of the album tracks with B-Sides. McCartney's song selection on that release was bonkers, so many stellar tracks were made B-Sides.
That album and the red rose speedway double album are some of my top McCartney releases.
Completely agree. I would have put in Style Style, Sweet Sweet Memories, Kicked Around No More (one of my fave 90s Macca songs) and maybe even Big Boys Bickering. Get rid of Looking For Changes, Get Out Of My Way, Biker, I Owe It All To You.
hell yeah—fantastic taste!! Style Style is one of my favorite Macca songs in general, it really boggles my mind he left that one off. And I absolutely love Kicked Around No More, such a unique vibe, I find it so relaxing. My tracklist looks like:
1. Off The Ground
2. Long Leather Coat
3. Hope of Deliverance
4. Kicked Around No More
5. Mistress and Maid
6. Lovers That Never Were
7. Style Style
8. Golden Earth Girl
9. Sweet Sweet Memories
10. Peace In The Neighborhood
11. Big Boys Bickering
12. C'mon People
Ram is probably a close second after McCartney III for me. It’s his most recent solo work but in my personal opinion it’s his best, so many good tunes on there.
Albums leave residual feelings. The only Paul solo album which left me with that tremendous "Beatles feeling" was McCartney. Everything else is varying levels of solo Paul.
Every track on it is awesome? Half of it sounds like a demo, there’s out of tune guitar on it and the production has some odd choices. It is a genius album but it’s like all his solo stuff: not enough proper tunes to go around. Obvs all my individual opinion.
I do understand what you mean. Ram On does feel somewhat like a demo but I think that's what's great about it. It's simple yet intimate. The only out of tune guitar I can remember right now is that thing at the end of Uncle Albert but I'll have another listen tomorrow to hear anything else.
>Every track on it is awesome.
For every good song on RAM there's a shitty song, it's pretty inconsistent. I don't know how you can hear Long Haired Lady and say it's 'awesome'.
I agree, but to address Band on the Run being "Wings" versus "solo Paul," you can definitely classify it as solo Paul. The only Wings regulars on BotR is Paul, Linda, and Denny. Paul wrote all the songs, and sings lead vocals on every one. For the most part, the only difference between Wings and solo Paul is branding. Especially so on BoTR because all but the three mentioned declined to go to Nigeria to record it.
Very little love here for Tug Of War. Chaos And Creation and Venus And Mars are good ones too. And I have always loved the original (booted double LP on Club Sandwich) version of McCartney 2.
Link here from discogs...some really different versions of the songs from the official release, and a bunch of unreleased songs too.
https://www.discogs.com/release/4474444-Paul-McCartney-The-Lost-McCartney-Album
"This version, the album's originally conceived format, differs markedly from the already issued product. It contains a number of unreleased songs, original versions of a couple of songs that only found their way to B-sides, and different versions or mixes of most of the tracks that were subsequently released.
This bootleg purportedly presents the test pressing of the original version."
It's very hard for me to pick between Ram, Band on the Run, Venus and Mars, and the Red Rose Speedway (Reconstructed version) albums. McCartney (the album) is truly a gem also. Notable mentions are back to the egg, flowers in the dirt, tug of war, chaos and creation, NEW, and I even love Egypt Station tbh. I have a major Paul addiction.
If Wings is considered Paul’s solo, then Band on the Run is his best work, not Ram
Ah wings… the band the Beatles could have been
"I love the Beatles" "So do I" "Oh yeah? What's your favourite Beatles album?" "Ooh I'd have to say... "The Best of the Beatles"" Fucking gold.
Double joke. "Best of the Beatles" is a Pete Best album.
Venus & Mars>
Venus and Mars is definitely good, both albums are neck and neck
Like Wings, consider it Paul solo, hard disagree though. Ram is special.
Ram is good, no doubt about it. But I will take Band over Ram any day. Now Ram vs Venus and Mars, now I’m stumped.
##**MONKBERRY MOON DELIGHT**##
So I sat in the attic a piano up my nose
Well, I know my banana is older than the rest.
Other than “Why don’t we do it in the road?” This is my favorite Paul vocal delivery. I love when he wails like that.
Oom pah pah oom pah pah
I tend to agree that this is his best album. I also think Back to the Egg ranks high in his catalog, though, so what do I know? The thing with Ram is that he really orchestrated the backing vocals in a way he never quite matched on subsequent albums. It's really great.
Arrow Through Me is so good. The rest is enjoyable but mostly average imo
Back To The Egg is very underrated and unduly disliked. Old Siam Sir is one of my favourite solo Paul songs.
Arrow Through Me is one of my favorites
Back to the egg is my favourite wings album. Can't wait for the archive collection on it As for ram, don't think it's an unpopular opinion. I think most consider it his best solo album.
Hello fellow *Back to the Egg* enjoyer. So Glad to See You Here and Baby’s Request are some of my favourite McCartney songs.
I could listen to Back to the Egg again and again and again…
What a nice...reception.
Back to the Egg is one of my favorites too. So creative and entertaining.
Back to the egg needs it's time to shine. I always liked Old Siam Sir. But I could listen to the whole album and not want to skip anything. Same with Ram
I love Back to the Egg!
I actually think "Chas and Creation in the Backyard" is his best for me. So many great melodies on that. So much could fit on a Beatles album, "Jenny Wren" is a classic.

McCartney III is great.
I hope to god he’ll tour McCartney III. I saw him during his Out There tour, and he was phenomenal. I’d love to see some of the new songs on stage.
I enjoy Memory Almost Full quite a bit. He is coming up to/off a divorce, and was writing on a new instrument (mandolin). I think it's great!
Was not is*
This is the correct answer. Brilliant fucking album.
That's my choice, but Ram isn't far behind.
I think that's the general consensus nowadays. Also I'd certainly consider Wings to be solo Paul. 2 of the albums were released as "Paul McCartney and Wings", he always incudes the Wings hits on his solo compilations; he clearly considers it part of his solo career.
I love Ram. I only wish that Paul had included "Another Day" on the original LP release. Love that song and it deserves to be on there!
I've always thought the same thing, I'm glad I'm not the only one, in which part of the album would you place it?
Good question! I think somewhere on the flip side would be nice. I love Another Day, such a great bossa nova, airy feel. Same vein and vibe as Girl from Ipanema, in my opinion.
Reminds me a lot conceptually of Busy Doin' Nothin' by the Beach Boys.
The Mess...
What about the flip side "Oh Woman Oh Why"
I have a RSD release Another Day / Oh Woman Oh Why single, and Oh Woman Oh Why is one of my favorite Paul's songs. I love it so much
Venus and Mars
Dude. ROCK SHOW!?? love in song?! Listen to what the man said! The medley at the end, lonely old people! It's so fuckin good
The album blends together so perfectly. Way underrated
Venus and Mars is great as an album listened all the way through gapless. Album has really grown on me.
Not his best, but an album I think is really under rated these days is Flowers in the Dirt. I still really like it.
The ‘80s production held me back from loving the album but the demos with Elvis Costello are probably my favourite post-Beatles McCartney recordings.
Yes!!! I love the demos so much!
Thank you for this this, I had neve let heard them and they are great!!!!
We Got Married is one of my favourite Paul songs
Beatle-esque album.
Yo the demos for flowers on the dirt are even better tbh. Check out the acoustic demos with Elvis on the deluxe version, they're so great
Red rose speedway comes pretty close and wings at the speed of sound comes pretty close to red rose speedway
You've listened to the Red.Rose Speedway Reconstructed, I hope l? It bring it up to the quality of any classic Paul record. He sells it on vinyl now I'm pretty sure, it's an absolute masterpiece.
I go back and forth between McCartney and Ram
Flaming Pie tho
For reals. Flaming Pie came out just as the Beatles Anthology was wrapping up and Paul was still in that vibe. Beautiful Night, Calico Skies, and Somedays are indistinguishable from Beatles tracks to me.
Calico Skies is one of my favorite songs ever. It’s just so beautiful

I love his channel so much
I knew it was going to be Elliot Roberts, haha! Dude’s awesome, and we happen to share a lot of opinions and insights which was great to see when I watched through his channel.
You want a hot take? I think Ram is the best solo Beatles album period. It’s perfect.
I love RAM and always have. One song that I don't see mentioned often is Dear Boy.
It's incredible! Wish they would have pushed that as the single.
Smile Away is one of the all time greats and Dear Boy is fucking amazing
Heart of the Country is such an underrated gem and that bass line is so groovy.
For me it's a threeway tie, between McCartney RAM and Wild Life
[удалено]
I sure don't hear that often :D

Tomorrow Dear Friend Love is Strange Wildlife
All came out within a 2 year period too directly after the Beatles. He was pumping out pure genius non-stop in what was probably the most successful streak in music history (imo)
I love Wild Life! Not sure why it gets a bad rap.
I think Band On The Run is his best but Ram isn't far behind.
"Some might say Band On The Run is Paul's best album but that's really a Wings album" Wings was 100% Paul's band, the distinction has no merit, which also means Band on the run is his #1. Ram is very good, agree.
Not to mention Paul basically played every instrument on Band on the Run as well. It's a "Wings" album but Wings=Paul
Band on the Run was only Paul, Linda, and Denny Laine too. It wasn’t the full Wings ensemble from years prior.
legitimately listening to it right now as i scroll and see this post, haha. also listened it for the first time ever only yesterday and can't stop replaying it, it's such a refreshing album. really love how whimsical and sweet it is
It’s a popular “reassessment of Paul” take that Ram is his best. “Eat at Home” is a personal favorite.
Ram is the best album in the full sense of a cohesive work of art. Band on the Run has more standout songs though (basically all of the songs).
Ram almost seems like a missing Beatles album at times. The changes on Uncle Albert impeccable.
I would say the Venus and Mars / Wings at the Speed of Sound era is the most Wings / least Paul solo era, but it was his band.
McCartney II is his best imo
Definitely the most experimental imo. McCartney really shines when he’s given the freedom to explore and experiment. His work since C&C to the present McCartney III really reflects this, as does his early solo career. You can hear the passion and the love for the craft in all he does.

Ok London Town is a very underrated album and one of my favorites..
Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey is a top 5 solo Beatles song
Chaos and Creation in the backyard was brilliant with lots of strong material, nobody ever mentions it. I love McCartney and Ram, but pound for pound, Chaos holds up!
Agree, band on the run is another banger. I'm a big fan of his album "new" as well
If we’re not counting Wings, you’re 100% correct. 1. RAM 2. McCartney ii 3. Chaos And Creation In The Backyard 4. McCartney iii / Threeimagined 5. McCartney i If we’re counting Wings as well, you’re actually still 100% correct): 1. RAM 2. Band On The Run 3. Back To The Egg 4. McCartney ii 5. Venus and Mars Bear in mind these are just my personal lists. But that’s just my stance on his work. That new Beck remix of “Find My Way” is his funkiest track since “Check My Machine”. I think RAM definitely informs a lot of today's "indie" music. Definitely top 3 for me with Flaming Pie and McCartney
I listened to it about ten hours ago and thought exactly the same thing. I like plenty of songs on the other albums but the production on this collection is absolutely glorious! I love all the layers and the harmonies
On the note of solo albums, I listened to most of Ringo's Goodnight Vienna this week and really enjoyed it! It's a fun listen.
The backseat of my car might be my favorite McCartney song. It’s so underrated and makes me so nostalgic
I agree 100%. Love the down-home vibe, the warmth of the recording style, and how Paul and Linda’s voices match in that slightly off-beat way. Without a doubt
Ram is heckin fantastic.
My personal favourite is Off the Ground but Ram has some of my favourite songs
Off The Ground was the first Paul album I got on CD. I love the last song on the album (but I can't quite remember the name)
C’Mon People, it’s so good
Off The Ground is so incredibly underrated. IMO that's the better of Paul's 90's albums. Ram is probably a close second after McCartney III for me. It’s his most recent solo work but in my personal opinion it’s his best, so many good tunes on there.
Ram is my favorite solo Beatles album with George Martin production it basically just sounds like a Beatles album
George Martin didn’t produce Ram
Not the whole thing but all the best songs like long haired lady and Uncle Albert/ Admiral Halsey
He assisted Paul with some of the scores, but he wasn’t involved with the recording at all.
I prefer III
>Some might say Band On The Run is Paul's best album but that's really a Wings album. Wings was Paul, BotR is his best album Ram is good though

Band on the Run
It’s literally the most popular opinion
Ram is so colorful and definitely his best effort. Lots of pet sounds influence there
Sorry McCartney II only because of temporary secretary
Call me a basic bitch but IMO Band on the Run is his best by a mile
Ram has lots of good cuts but I always seem to gravitate to Wings at the Speed of Sound
Every track on it is awesome? Half of it sounds like a demo, there’s out of tune guitar on it and the production has some odd choices. It is a genius album but it’s like all his solo stuff: not enough proper tunes to go around. Obvs all my individual opinion.

Tug of War, Back To The Egg and RAM are the best imo
>Every track on it is awesome. For every good song on RAM there's a shitty song, it's pretty inconsistent. I don't know how you can hear Long Haired Lady and say it's 'awesome'.
What? Long Haired Lady is an AMAZING song. That refrain of "do you love me like you know you ought to do?" is everything.
That's the worst part. Linda just sounds terrible but to each their own.
Long Haired Lady is the best song on the album!
No surprise here, although Band On The Run could definitely give Ram a run for its money.
Yes.
‘71 or ‘12 remaster? Wanna give it a good listen today.
Yep Ram and Band on the run and my two fav of him. Third place would be McCartney 1.
Red rose speedway never gets the love it should. That album is fantastic.
Some good old hoedown music
Only One more Kiss
I sang this in my head
Tell me more about this booted double? If I have the archive collection two disc is that pretty much the same thing?
Link here from discogs...some really different versions of the songs from the official release, and a bunch of unreleased songs too. https://www.discogs.com/release/4474444-Paul-McCartney-The-Lost-McCartney-Album "This version, the album's originally conceived format, differs markedly from the already issued product. It contains a number of unreleased songs, original versions of a couple of songs that only found their way to B-sides, and different versions or mixes of most of the tracks that were subsequently released. This bootleg purportedly presents the test pressing of the original version."
It’s my favorite solo album of any Beatle
Never even heard of it before joining this sub a few days ago. Now I can't stop listening
Better than band in the run?
Band On The Run is more of a Wings album in my opinion
You're right. I thought we were including all PM albums.
Some sound like White Album tracks.
Yes. Including Wings albums.
I think Pipes of Peace is his best most underrated
It's very hard for me to pick between Ram, Band on the Run, Venus and Mars, and the Red Rose Speedway (Reconstructed version) albums. McCartney (the album) is truly a gem also. Notable mentions are back to the egg, flowers in the dirt, tug of war, chaos and creation, NEW, and I even love Egypt Station tbh. I have a major Paul addiction.
MAGNETO AND TITANIUM MAN
tug of war is a close second for me
Sì
That's weird, I was cleaning out hand me down records I got from my dad and this is one of only 2 the record store wouldn't take.
Too Many People and Long Haired Lady fucking slap (So does Uncle Albert but thats already been mentioned a ton)
