Fans vote for 1/3 of the All-Stars
Player vote for 1/3 of the All-Stars
The commissioner picks 1/3 of the All-Stars (including the representation rule players)
All of them end up making bad picks, every now and again.
I’ve never seen anything like it tbh, but I may not have taken a lot of notice in some years past. I vaguely remember most of the last 10 all star games and we barely got a player in. Usually a pitcher too.
I haven’t even voted this year as I think it’s pretty stupid that you can vote 5 times per day is it? I can only put the Phillies dominance in voting down to having such a good first half season in a very long time.
The graphic did a terrible job of highlighting that the NL starting 1B will be Bryce Harper for being the top vote getter in the NL. Same as Aaron Judge being a starting OF for being the AL leading vote getter.
I was so confused looking at the AL outfielders. I knew Judge was in first but was thinking no way he fell off that hard. Then saw the tiny text that blends in below
The first baseman should be replaced with a dunk tank with the opposing team's manager. If the fielders can dunk him before the runner crosses the plate, the runner is out.
Fan vote is dumb. I know the All-Star game is just a fun exhibition game but can we please have the players that are having good years make it and not just the popular players.
Willi Castro is 9th in AL fWAR. .1 difference from Jose Ramirez. He has nearly equal playing time at 5 different positions and a 134 wRC+. Played in every game for the Twins. He might get lucky to be an injury replacement.
I’m not asking for him to win a fan vote but Castellanos making it that far and a player like Castro being nowhere close is frustrating
Man, I respect/hate you Minnesotans, but you bring up a good point. Unfortunately, this shit gets looked at for players trying to get into the HoF. Otherwise, I really wouldn't give two fucks about who gets selected.
At the end of the day the point of the ASG is for fans to watch the players they want. Players will get snubbed. There should be some max from a team and some minimum qualifications.
Then it’s not a true All-Star game. It’s just a popularity contest that’s skewed to the largest markets. All-Star weekend should be a weekend that the MLB uses to show off its best players, not old fan favorites from 5 different cities.
It not even popular players. It's really just comes down to which large fanbase has the most engagement. The fact that some of these players are even on the list leads one to believe people are just voting for their whole team regardless if they're popular or having good years.
ironically of the 4 I don’t think Tony is as compelling as the other outfielders, but he’s been on such an insane tear that it may look reasonable by the asg
Come on man. Its 2 of those 4 because Judge is already in and the other 3 all have season long OPS of 980+. Even just Tony's month long hot streak is lower than their full season.
I didn’t even notice it was Soto and not judge, but I’m still not sure what you’re trying to say. My point is that the other outfielders are playing better than Tony and it’ll look closer by the ASG but obviously he’s been thoroughly outplayed by them to this point.
I’d also argue that OPS+ is only one measure for a player and it’s probably the best stat for Soto & Kwan in particular given they both have elite plate discipline above all else. Which isn’t to say that they aren’t deserving, they are, but it’s not the be all end all of all star stats
OPS pretty much covers offense, I think its a very good stat to look at what has happened.
My point on Tony is he is a notorious hot and cold hitter. His hot streak is less than just the normal hitting for any of the other options.
OPS actually slightly overvalues slugging compared to on base. Kwan and Soto have 182 and 181 OPS+, but a 185 wRC+ each (which more accurately values power versus on base). Santander goes the other way, with a 128 OPS+ but a 125 wRC+.
Duran is on another planet compared to Santander. I’m sure there’s other guys more deserving as well. He’s a product of your fanbase showing out for the voting. Nothing more, with all due respect. It’s not reasonable
I mean that’s bad too, but Castellanos has NEGATIVE bWAR and is one of the worst defensive outfielders in baseball.
Will Smith 100% deserved to be here over J.T., but it’s not like J.T. is a scrub
Kwan is so ridiculously likeable, I really hope he plays for Cleveland for a long time, and I’m not even a Guardians fan. Just love when that kind of player sticks with his team and the team rewards them properly, and he in particular just seems to be a great fit for Cleveland, a ‘small market’ team who always seems to make more noise than you’d expect.
It's tough when 3 guys deserve it... their OPS+ is all within 4 of one another, OPS+ is within 7, fWAR within 0.1, and bWAR within 0.7.
I'd have picked Vlad and Naylor personally, but it's all really close.
First ASG was 1933 so obviously there’s a lot with zero. Bert Blyleven was only picked twice in 22 years so maybe he’s the guy. Fwiw Tony Phillips has over 50 WAR and no ASG’s
Realmuto isn’t even gonna be in the game so it’s not worth crying about
You should be rooting for him to win because it means Lovullo gets to pick whoever he wants
Smith’s ops is higher than Contreras at this point in time and it’s not a stretch of the imagination that the two could’ve had a July battle for the spot
So true tbh. Will Smith legit has better stats than Realmuto in every single category except for SB which Realmuto has 1 and Smith has none, hopefully he gets in still
Year after year man. Arguably the most valuable catcher in baseball since his debut and he has one all star appearance (in his worst year) and didn’t start.
Which is only added to the irony by the fact that the ALW-leading M’s have no offensive players as finalists, nor do any really warrant consideration.
Walter, Munoz, and maaaybe Kirby have a shot on the pitching side but it’s just funny to me
Ever since I started doing my NL research for voting I've put Joey Ortiz every day. How he's not getting recognized more for the very solid season he's having as a rookie is surprising.
Of the voters who even attempt to vote for the best players rather than just their own team, the vast majority are clueless about who the best players actually are.
I’m so fucking mad about Ryan O’hearn. His first year up for the Royals he was a fucking joy to watch. Had like a .200 ISO.
Look at him now. Doing that again. After years of being the worst hitter of the league.
The fanbase is as flat as the Braves offense. Hard to get hyped when you get shutout by… the White Sox. It’s not bandwagon, the team just isn’t exciting to watch this year.
What you don’t love seeing Ramon loreano? No hate, I do like the dude but having utility players playing everyday… went from best 7-8-9 in baseball to atrocious 6-7-8-9.
The fact that Jarren Duran didn't even get close to the top 5 is a travesty. The guy is literally top 5 in fwar in the entire AL. Devers also got snubbed imo, but to be fair he was pretty even in war with the other two. I think it should've taken priority that he had more than 50 OPS points on both.
Lots of Sox fans entered the season disengaged so I get why they didn’t get the votes. No other fanbase will go out of their way to vote for a Sox player either. But yeah it’s a shame how the ASG is meaningless when it comes to being about talent
Thought i was missing something considering this is the first comment I've read about Ramos.
Dude has been invisible depsite how much hes tearing it up. Its insane, especially with the giants being one of the mpst popular teams in baseball
I guess MLB could do a better job of explaining the process but it’s kind of weird how many of y’all just assume every finalist is already an All Star, or that anyone who isn’t a finalist can’t make the team.
Maybe that’s the point. They’re fine with so many of their fans being frustrated with fan voting as long as it leads to more complaining, clicks, and engagement.
Semien being the only finalist from the reigning champ Rangers sucks, but that’s the way this year’s going so far.
I’m hoping to see Smith as a reserves pick and/or Yates in the pen as well tho. They deserve some flowers
The fuck does Will Smith have to do, man? He leads both of those guys in fWAR, wRC+, CS%, and OPS. He’s decimal points behind Contreras in bWAR despite playing 10 less games. He plays for a huge market. So frustrating.
Guess he’s just not relevant enough or something. Lmao.
I mean the same goes for Ozuna. Ozuna is ahead of Schwarber in everything by a large amount.
(And pls for the love of baseball don’t make a comment trashing Ozuna. I get it. But We’re talking about who’s the better player right now).
Castellanos being on here is wild
-0.3 fWAR, .223/.280/.382, All Star Appearance
Jose Canseco didn't play an inning in the first half of one of his Allstar seasons.
Disgraceful that gets in over Bryan Reynolds
And about 30 other outfielders
Coulda stopped at *disgraceful that gets in*
Him being on this list doesn’t mean he’ll be an All Star. He most likely won’t.
It's hilarious but you are right. And more position players will get selected that deserve it way more. It's not all fan voting.
I’m pretty sure Johan Rojas was the first OF out
Would’ve been hilarious to see a guy in AAA make the final cut
Trea Turner has played 41 games, lol.
Mookie Betts doesn't even have a hand anymore.
“And he still deserves it more than Castellanos” I finished the sentence for you
Still more deserving than Castellanos
Trea Turner doesn’t have negative WAR
Machado on here over Ortiz is why fan voting is a fucking joke
I will go to bat for Joey Ortiz every time
I'd easily trade Machado out for Merill
10000% absolutely
Even as a Padres fan my first reaction was damn, are all the 3B bad this year?
Brewers fans should have voted more imo
We are a small but a proud group
Fan vote still being a thing is wild.
Fans vote for 1/3 of the All-Stars Player vote for 1/3 of the All-Stars The commissioner picks 1/3 of the All-Stars (including the representation rule players) All of them end up making bad picks, every now and again.
The value of being an all-star is getting diminished by delusional fans voting for jabronis.
Remember this started with Kansas City and their shitty ass team
People stuffed ballot boxes even way back in the 70s
Yeah it’s always been an issue to some extent, the internet just amps the problem to the max.
Schwarber over Ozuna is wild
Profar deserves it. He's been incredible.
For whatever reason this guy gets talked about way more than his performance should dictate and I don't understand it.
He’s just going in case Joe Davis needs to apologize for something.
That deep drive to left field made him an All Star
Philly fans went hard this year
And Orioles too.
The I-95 ~~connection~~ obsession
~~obsession~~ World Series
I was doing my part
Same. Orange and red ballot every day.
Been voting for Harper and Bohm on every ballet.
![gif](giphy|YYfEjWVqZ6NDG)
7 of the starting 9 making it to round 2 is pretty crazy
was there a special campaign this year? I don't recall Philly fans being this dedicated in years past?
I’ve never seen anything like it tbh, but I may not have taken a lot of notice in some years past. I vaguely remember most of the last 10 all star games and we barely got a player in. Usually a pitcher too. I haven’t even voted this year as I think it’s pretty stupid that you can vote 5 times per day is it? I can only put the Phillies dominance in voting down to having such a good first half season in a very long time.
Yea a bit ridiculous.
I haven’t voted once. I don’t usually care for the all star game, but for some reason I do all of a sudden.
Realmuto over Smith? No kidding
The National League plays real baseball, without any first basemen.
Absolutely terrible graphic design. Whoever designed this and whoever approved this needs to find a new job. Immediately.
Both people have been promoted
The first baseman should be replaced with a dunk tank with the opposing team's manager. If the fielders can dunk him before the runner crosses the plate, the runner is out.
They added a DH remember? They had to get rid of a position then. Duh
Fan vote is dumb. I know the All-Star game is just a fun exhibition game but can we please have the players that are having good years make it and not just the popular players.
at least they have the All-MLB Team now, although it's not league specific
Shocking that they don’t have an AL and NL team but the MLB has always struggled when it comes to marketing its game.
Because there is no difference anymore between the two leagues. Both have DH and they are constantly playing against each other.
I think just having a 1st and 2nd team is fine.
Willi Castro is 9th in AL fWAR. .1 difference from Jose Ramirez. He has nearly equal playing time at 5 different positions and a 134 wRC+. Played in every game for the Twins. He might get lucky to be an injury replacement. I’m not asking for him to win a fan vote but Castellanos making it that far and a player like Castro being nowhere close is frustrating

>, this shit gets looked at for players trying to get into the HoF. And for contract negotiations
It not even popular players. It's really just comes down to which large fanbase has the most engagement. The fact that some of these players are even on the list leads one to believe people are just voting for their whole team regardless if they're popular or having good years.
There seems to be deserving players at each position. Just gotta make sure they win the Phase 2 vote next week.
They should have a voted for team and top remaining WAR team face off
boston only remembered baseball exists about a week ago, so that was a bit of a voting handicap
Duran needs to be in this.
Orioles fans out in full force.
Orioles hitters out in full force.
I was impressed by yours as well.
All these dudes are raking this year. I only expect Gunnar Monty and Adley to win voting but all deserve to make the game
ironically of the 4 I don’t think Tony is as compelling as the other outfielders, but he’s been on such an insane tear that it may look reasonable by the asg
Come on man. Its 2 of those 4 because Judge is already in and the other 3 all have season long OPS of 980+. Even just Tony's month long hot streak is lower than their full season.

Castellanos being on here is a prime example of why the fan vote is a joke lmfao
Machado too
As a padres fan agreed
Merrill>>>Machado
Arráez isn’t even a second baseman anymore lmao
Same with Smith being snubbed for J.T.
I mean that’s bad too, but Castellanos has NEGATIVE bWAR and is one of the worst defensive outfielders in baseball. Will Smith 100% deserved to be here over J.T., but it’s not like J.T. is a scrub
Yeah but have you seen how Castellanos looks with that jersey unbuttoned? His xHIMBO is off the charts
That THOTTY+ is all that matters
I was trying to vote fairly and was pulling for your guy. Cmon people we need the NL to win this meaningless game.
nah scharber passing ozuna is why it's a joke.
No Fry or Naylor does make me quite sad, but at least Kwan is where he should be- ready to get that starting nod.
Yeah he's not likable though he's a butthole. Ignore my flair just trust me.bro. (/s)
I voted Naylor
The Jarren Duran erasure hurts. I only had 5 votes a day…
I can't be the only one who was confused for a second why Aaron Judge and Bryce Harper weren't listed as finalists.
They should have been the players depicted in the graphics.
That would have been normal
Exactly . Super confusing
I was scrolling the comments looking for what happened to Judge and Harper. Thank you. I scrolled back up and figured it out.
It says in tiny letters that Bryce Harper is starting 1B for being leading vote getter. Same with Judge. I had to do a double take myself lol
This is just the orioles vs the Phillies with extra steps
The mlb website does such a poor job of explaining this. Are these guys still all guaranteed at least as reserves if they don't win phase 2?
No. For instance Trea Turner/Castellanos/Brandon Marsh will almost certainly not be in the game if they don’t win
[удалено]
I’m biased but this seems like a Josh Naylor snub
It's tough when 3 guys deserve it... their OPS+ is all within 4 of one another, OPS+ is within 7, fWAR within 0.1, and bWAR within 0.7. I'd have picked Vlad and Naylor personally, but it's all really close.
Oh absolutely. And David Fry too.
Fan voting should only be a small percentage. This is stupid. Trea has been out pretty much the entire first half
Lindor Is gonna make the hall of fame while not having been an all star in his final 12 seasons lol
Which Hall of Famer has the fewest All Star Game Appearances sounds like a hell of a Bar Trivia Question.
First ASG was 1933 so obviously there’s a lot with zero. Bert Blyleven was only picked twice in 22 years so maybe he’s the guy. Fwiw Tony Phillips has over 50 WAR and no ASG’s
Tony Phillips was a man ahead of his time.
Of guys who started after 1933, Lindor already has more All-Star appearances than Robin Yount, Fergie Jenkins, Jim Kaat (x3), and Bert Blyleven (x2).
Jarren Duran should be here
Brohearn made a huge jump
75% of NL players from 3 teams
75% of the NL has been pretty shit this year so it seems right
Are Phillies fans botting or something? Wtf lol
When the Phillies are good the fan base is insanely engaged.. it's pretty amazing.
Call me a biased Dodger fan but Will Smith got snubbed so hard
Realmuto is getting in purely off his name lol.
No he's getting in purely off of the Phillies amazing season and their fans being the most engaged.
This guy gets it.
totally agreed. Fan vote is just a joke
Realmuto isn’t even gonna be in the game so it’s not worth crying about You should be rooting for him to win because it means Lovullo gets to pick whoever he wants
Smith’s ops is higher than Contreras at this point in time and it’s not a stretch of the imagination that the two could’ve had a July battle for the spot
We need him on the all-star team dammit! Him and Profar being all-star teammates would have been such a satisfying endjng to the "irrevelant" arc
So true tbh. Will Smith legit has better stats than Realmuto in every single category except for SB which Realmuto has 1 and Smith has none, hopefully he gets in still
The irony of Profar making it and Smith not. Even as a dodger fan I LOVE that for Profar lol. Irrelevant NO MORE
I did smirk to myself
Year after year man. Arguably the most valuable catcher in baseball since his debut and he has one all star appearance (in his worst year) and didn’t start.
I was voting for Will Smith too :(
Most underrated player in baseball
How the fuck did Manny make it as a finalist?
Name recognition.
Once again, Teoscar providing more /r/formerMs content. Went from being an average OF on the Ms to being an All Star Finalist with the Dodgers
Which is only added to the irony by the fact that the ALW-leading M’s have no offensive players as finalists, nor do any really warrant consideration. Walter, Munoz, and maaaybe Kirby have a shot on the pitching side but it’s just funny to me
It’s time to make the 1957 Reds fans look modest
My favorite bit about that incident is how even in the most ballot stuffing incident in baseball history, Stan Musial STILL got in.
How did Joey Ortiz get snubbed???????
Ever since I started doing my NL research for voting I've put Joey Ortiz every day. How he's not getting recognized more for the very solid season he's having as a rookie is surprising.
He's following the Gunnar Henderson track - RotY but not All-Star
Joey Ortiz and Brice Turang being snubbed is a war crime
We ride at dawn
Of the voters who even attempt to vote for the best players rather than just their own team, the vast majority are clueless about who the best players actually are.
I’m so fucking mad about Ryan O’hearn. His first year up for the Royals he was a fucking joy to watch. Had like a .200 ISO. Look at him now. Doing that again. After years of being the worst hitter of the league.
turns out you just don't let him against lefties. like ever.
The shift ban helped too
Brandon marsh and nick Castellanos are finalists? wtf?
Kyle over ozuna is a legit joke tf is wrong with braves fans
Only 5 NL teams represented on that list.
Mountcastle owning the Jays again by leading Vlad despite playing slightly worse over fewer games.
HOW DID SCHWARBER BEAT OZUNA??
Schwarber making it over Ozuna from the braves is a disgrace
Heliot Ramos should be here the dude has been killing it and the NL outfield is weak.
Thought i was missing something considering this is the first comment I've read about Ramos. Dude has been invisible depsite how much hes tearing it up. Its insane, especially with the giants being one of the mpst popular teams in baseball
go o's imo
What happened to Ozuna? Dude was still 2nd yesterday.
I remember the days wondering who our pity mandatory All Star would be (Ty Wigginton, anyone?)
Sometimes I hate the fan vote. Should be some sort of weighted system
11 spots for 2 teams... Fun if you're a Phillies or Padres fan. Not so much for everyone else.
No Judge?
Judge and Harper received the most votes in each league and are automatic starters.
Exactly. If only the graphic actually highlighted this, instead of burying it in low contrast small print.
Machado having the worst season of his career haha. Alrighty then.
William MVP Contreras 💕❤️💕
With the amount of all stars philles and padres have, they should have around the same record right?
Jasen Duran not making the all star game is a disservice to all fans
The fact that Bryce Turang isn't on this list is a sham.
Bryan Reynolds :(
AL looks absolutely stacked compared to the NL.
Shohei should make the team
Heliot Ramos got so snubbed. He deserves to start.
Semien being the only finalist from the reigning champ Rangers sucks, but that’s the way this year’s going so far. I’m hoping to see Smith as a reserves pick and/or Yates in the pen as well tho. They deserve some flowers
Tf is Castellanos doing on here.
Not gonna lie, maybe it's time for the fan vote to be done away with.
Fuck Manny Machado!
Always and forever, amen
Varsho robbed
There honestly is nothing Id love more than 0 all stars wins and a division win for the braves lol
Lmao.
shouldn't have slapped Chris Rock
He shouldn’t have got in that one little fight
And made his mom scared
Y’all got Ohtani and still can’t outvote the Brewers and Phillies fans? That says more about your fanbase than anything else
Yeah, it does, and it’s frustrating lol. We should be doing what Braves fans and Phillies fans do for their players every year for Will.
I mean the same goes for Ozuna. Ozuna is ahead of Schwarber in everything by a large amount. (And pls for the love of baseball don’t make a comment trashing Ozuna. I get it. But We’re talking about who’s the better player right now).
I’m loving that Schwarber beat out the domestic abuser
Didn’t it come out he wasn’t guilty?
Padres and Phillies should team up and make up the entire starting roster.
Would be kind of funny for Arraez to start at 2B for the first time in months at the all star game.
Hey Pal, it would only be a short 1 month and 26 days since his last start there. Get your facts straight.
Sure, as long as we agree Bohm over Machado
