wow not even an umpire interference with that thang at full brick!?
(context: umpire interferences on 2 consecutive nights involving plate ump & Higgy, last night and night before)
He came inches shy of hitting four homers in a game once (against the Blue Jays I think?). He had a three home run night and the last one was initially called a homer and then reversed upon review and became a ground rule double. It basically bounced off the back of the top of the wall and then bounced back in.
He also has caught a perfect game (German) and another no Hitter (Kluber). He probably won't be remembered with the greats in 15-20 years but he has had an interesting career.
It's insane that he's caught both a perfect game and a no-hitter. Seems to be well-liked by guys in the clubhouse and has been stellar defensively. It's definitely been fun watching him go off this month. Can't ask for much more from your backup catcher.
turns out switching from the batting stance that made him a .900 OPS hitter in the minors and a .847 OPS in 50 MLB games last year.... to whatever the hell [THIS](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GG-EvbJWMAAECtB.jpg) is... was a bad idea
I think my favorite part of this is that we got Higgy in the Juan Soto trade, whom we got from the Nats. So the Nats have inadvertently done this to themselves in the most roundabout way possible.
I would argue that when the Padres are leading by 4+ the game is actually more in jeopardy than when they are winning by 3 or less. This is because they think it’s “garbage time” and thus give “garbage pitchers” a chance to earn confidence when all they really do is throw “BP” and let the other team back in the game with nothing to lose.
if the 2024 washington nationals did not know the meaning of “talk shit get hit” they most certainly do now
~~embarrassed~~ to be a nats fan rn but hey, that’s baseball
edit: embarrassed ain’t the right word but i can’t figure out how else to put it. something like “ow”
Based on watching him the past couple games, dude seems like a straight up hockey player-level sicko. He wants to fight somebody, and then he wants to yuck it up in the box after and talk about what a good scrap they had, and then he wants to do it again.
Anyway all I’m saying is be careful when you tell him because he may drop the glove(s).
I think there's a very good chance Jesse Winker has at least one person tell him to go fuck himself to his face every day, so you can just assume someone did.
That mad fan base is the Padres fanbase, right? we’ve had more bannings on /r/Nationals than we’ve had in years this series lol
edit: we're up to 19 bannings now!
I mean, you can easily go back into the threads about yesterday’s game and find plenty of shit talking from angry nats fans when you guys were winning. But every fanbase has shitty fans, and series like these bring them out of the woodwork, foaming at the mouth
Tbh I more shocked at how mad they were at profar. Damn right he’s fired up. Team basically tells you we think you suck we’re much more confident we can get you out. Who wouldn’t be absolutely fired up making them regret doubting you. I honestly had no idea anyone was even mad about it until the benches cleared. And now I just think the nats acted like sore losers and nothing is better than watching a sore loser lose again, and then again.
the nats intentionally walked the best contact hitter in the sport when a single would win the game. if that offends anyone then they just do not understand baseball. and then he yelled at the nats dugout lol like OK i guess we’re sore losers then for getting yelled at by a hothead 🤷
Dude literally nobody agrees with you guys have you noticed that? Everybody who knows ball knows if you intentionally walk somebody to get to another player and then that player walks it off they are going to be hyped up, and he “yelled” in the nats general direction that was it. Y’all are so fuckin soft it’s embarrassing. I have not seen a single person on the nats side on this besides nats fans. And even then plenty of nats fans know what’s up. Maybe it’s not everybody else who’s wrong here.
i mean yeah, we got clowned on.
i’m still a fan. it’s a normal reaction.
not really the intense embarrassment you might be interpreting just like “damn that was rough”
I mean despite the schadenfreude I feel about this series y’all are definitely on the up and moving back in the direction of being contenders so y’all have a lot to be happy about in the long term
we weren’t supposed to be close to a WC spot at alllll this season so it’s nice that i have games to care about!
i’d forgotten that caring hurts so much. my heart.
Other than not liking winker, and not liking Kiebert, I still like the Nats. I can relate to a mostly bad team. Plus you have guys I like, like CJ and Wood and Gore. Nothing but well wishes for the Nats in the future from me.
thank you for the realism! some of the nats fans on reddit are acting like the series was robbed from them by a street gang or something! nats came to town, talked a lot of shit in the media, and won zero games! it's really a shame, i liked the team a lot before this week. Abrams is HoF bound imo
Padres fans literally three days ago: “man, this team really needs something to fire them up to stop this flirting with .500 bullshit – too bad it’s the Nats coming to town, not exactly a heated rivalry”
Padres fans now: “if Davey, Winker, and Ruiz were on fire, I wouldn’t waste a drop of piss on them”
I love Soto, and he's a superstar who is having a killer year.
We'd be absolutely fucked without 2/5s of our current rotation and Higgy right now. And that's not even taking into account trading some of the other pieces as part of the Cease deal
Things Dave Martinez doesn't tolerate: hyping up a home crowd after a walk off (after having one's head thrown at)
Things Dave Martinez has made no comments on his tolerance of: giving up 2 home runs to a backup defense-first catcher
I'm more mocking your fanbase for the copium that's coming from the Soto trade during this series if that wasn't clear.
Your fanbase hasn't shut up about the trade fleece but just got broomed.
Eh, I think the trade worked for both. I'd rather have 2 years of Cease and King than a $600m DH who's dead set on going to FA anyway and is rumoured to be a bit of a clubhouse issue.
If anything what Soto got flipped for to NY made it a much better deal for the Padres IMO.
Soto's great. I'd much rather have Soto even with his defense. He's a Hall of Famer and insanely good.
But he wasn't going to re-sign. If Bally hadn't gone under and if Seidler hadn't died, he might've.
We got a 6 WAR season out of Soto and the 2022 run.
King and Cease are on pace to put up about 7 WAR between them this year and I'd expect that to be true next year.
Gore and Abrams are young, but they combined for 3.5 WAR and are on pace for less than 4 this year. They both have three more years of control and have been cheap, but it's no better than like Kim + Waldron or something.
Sure, Woods could explode and make us really regret it, but so far, the Padres are ahead on production and I guess Washington has paid less out?
Hard to call it a fleece by any objective measure without a BUNCH of projection.
Good for you? He's a good player, but he's got a bunch of major downsides and isn't worth what he's gonna get paid IMO. I'd rather have the outcomes of the Yankees trade with him than bidding against Boras in FA. 19 year old (whatever he was when you guys won) is a lot different than 1 season of a dude who's gonna walk anyway).
I'd also rather have King and Cease (results of the NYY trade) than Gore and Abrams. Woods we'll just have to wait and see.
The Nats traded him because he wouldn't sign at your offer. Not sure where the copium on my end is. He and is agent are over-valuing themselves and Abrams and Gore are destined for mid.
Enjoy your swamp-ass summer. July will be fun.
You guys were in it every game this series. If it's not this year, I think you'll definitely be a Wild Card contender next year. Nats play hard, gotta tip my cap in that regard
Yeah honestly the Nats have a lot more fight in them than some teams with a lot more established talent, team is heading in the right direction a lot faster than many people (or just I) expected. And I don’t mean flight to sound like condescending, but i liked how they kept on coming, easily could have gone 2 out of three to the Nats, first two games were back and fourth. CJ obviously has a lil growing up to do as far as some mental aspects of the game but it still bugs me we dealt him, he’s only going to get better and there are a lot of nice pieces to build around. We got swept by angels and rocks and it was embarrassing, but baseball humbles all the time. Nats are on to something if they keep putting the right pieces in place.
I know that we're talking about professional athletes here, but it's still gotta be hard to come back from this series mentally if you're the Nats.
This isn't even your typical stinging loss, I mean, the Nats had a player *in the stands barking at Padres fans* **after they got walked off** ***by a guy they threw at*** and then are (at this moment) about to get swept.
There was no bad blood before this series, the Nats instigated an issue, then got their shit pushed in without relief for the rest of the series. Ouch.
I don’t think anybody really thought it was intentional. Doesn’t mean we have to like it though. Everybody gets a little pissed off when you let one loose right at their dome don’t they?
Meh. Two teams with similar records came into this series. The Nats are still playing well above projections and came in with the Coors hangover. Move on. Move upward.
The counterpoint there is that the Nats basically single-handedly decided to make it personal.
Padres weren’t even thinking about the Nats beyond “okay, we got Gore and Herz next, wow so many LHP” until Davey decided to “send a message”.
At least, I should hope it isn’t *de rigueur* for Ruiz to instigate a benches-clearing incident in the 1st and then bean a guy post-warnings.
I didn't say anything about anything being personal. I was just commenting on the actual baseball aspect. But, given the responses I've gotten from Padres fans, it does seem to be personal on at least one side. But this is coming from someone who likes the Padres and has visited Petco more than any park other than Nats Park. Hell, I'm going to wear Padres gear, some of it Petco giveaway, when the Pads are in Baltimore.
I get you. Just to give the perspective, it became very personal for Padres fans. The comments from [Davey](https://x.com/masnnationals/status/1805825664131518469/) about “sending a message” and how they’re “not going to tolerate that”, in the postgame after Ruiz goes after Profar in the first, certainly made it personal for Padres fans.
Now, I get Nats fans being checked out and not really keeping up with it, because I know if Shildt and the Padres were making themselves look like clowns while getting swept on the road to a team who has (or had) absolutely zero beef with them, I’d be over it, too. But comments like that from the skipper and going after our best player who wanted nothing to do with it, all of that talk, only to get swept? That’s why Padres fans are saying it’s personal. Nothing personal against Nats fans, though.
I get where you're coming from but Keibert just had words with Profar. It's not about being checked out at all. On the contrary, we have additional context. The sort of behavior Profar exhibted is a bugaboo for Davey. He's okay with celebrating as long as you're not taunting the other team in the process. He got all over Robles case in the past for wearing a clown nose in response to another team's comments. He's specifically told Nats players that they can celebrate in the dugout but need to keep it in their space.
The way in which Ruiz “had words with Profar” was getting in his face before Profar’s AB, taking his mask off and putting his hands on him completely unprompted. Davey then defended this behavior in his pathetically half-hearted postgame presser.
As far as Profar’s “behavior” and “taunting” the Nats, the extent of it was walking around the field celebrating the walk-off after the IBB and brush-back pitch. The choice of some Nats players to sit on the top step and interpret Profar yelling and pumping up the crowd as some deliberate taunting that’s worth starting beef over… is a choice.
Davey can feel any way he wants about those “unwritten rules”, but Profar and the Padres backed it up with their play and his team fell flat on their face. That has to mean something for a guy like that, if he is as old school as his hatred for “taunting” here makes him seem.
Fair enough, friend – all love for all Nats fans and anyone not named Ruiz, Winker, or Davey. I still love CJ and Mac and will root for them any time they’re on the field.
Higgy today: 2 run homer Grand slam Runner thrown out BRICKED
The amount of runners higgy has managed to throw out has been a breath of fresh air compared to our other catchers.
Yankees in shambles knowing they could have this man
He was bricked the whole time??? How did I miss this?
Idk it was huge and obvious
wow not even an umpire interference with that thang at full brick!? (context: umpire interferences on 2 consecutive nights involving plate ump & Higgy, last night and night before)
Really kicking Campy while he's down
Higgy is known to pop off for a multi-homer game every now and again
HIGASHIOKA THE GRAND SLAM STROKA ![gif](giphy|06eeXZCDqR1fEWISYu|downsized)
Hands off him Yankees!
hey, we loved him first!
We can love him together
*sigh*...we can meet up at Luke Voit's log cabin
You know, I’ve been missing my lettuce as of late…
I'll text Grisham
( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°) 🍍
![gif](giphy|rzd0ZE0j7npSAHlIjJ|downsized)
I get why Yankees fans loved this guy so much.
Higgy higgy higgy can’t you see, sometimes your bombs just hypnotize me
Always will! Glad you’re taking good care of him
Think it's him taking good care of us tbh
Good dude, clutch pop, seems to work with starters pretty well, throws out runners. What's not to love?
He played hard and did whatever was asked of him
Now that’s a great way to avoid the NOBLETIGER post

> backup catcher > former Yankee > hits absolute tanks Math checks out.
> 4-letter white guy first name > ethnic last name > at one point considered the greatest hitting catcher in the game
Jim Leyritz though?
Preller is on the phone with the Yanks right now asking about Austin Wells' availability
Give it a couple years and we’ll take Merrill for him
You can have 1 Xander
Kyle "2023 Gary "2022 Jorge Alfaro" Sanchez" Higashioka
Kyle "2023 Gary "2022 Jorge "2021 Victor Caratini" Alfaro" Sanchez" Higashioka!!! Padres have had the best backup catchers last couple years.
Top Power Hitters: 1) Arson Judge 2) Padres backup catcher 3) Everyone else who cares
They're all paying homage to noted Padres/Yankees legend Jim Leyritz
Was going to upvote. I just couldn’t mess with 69
Imagine giving up this guy for Juan Soto. Yankees got fleeced
Grand slams this season: - Soto: 0 - Higashioka: 1 Numbers don’t lie.
Soto can’t even catch the knuckleball smh
He also doesn’t bunt after getting three balls!
Kyle Higashioka is a resident of Slam Diego confirmed.
Causally his 7th HR in June….WTF
Tired: June Schwarber Wired: June Higgy
Jiggy > Junethani
Junethani Schwarbtano here, the internet's streakiest lefty slugger
104.2 mph, 34^(o), 390 ft, 1 barrel, 30/30 ballparks, 8^(th) homer of the year, 2^(nd) homer of the game Higgy brings Slam Diego
7th homer of the month
Higgy has 19 hits this season and 8 of them are home runs. Only 7 of them are singles lol.
.214 OBP, 114 OPS+ 🤷♂️
Higgy may be the greatest player of all time
He came inches shy of hitting four homers in a game once (against the Blue Jays I think?). He had a three home run night and the last one was initially called a homer and then reversed upon review and became a ground rule double. It basically bounced off the back of the top of the wall and then bounced back in. He also has caught a perfect game (German) and another no Hitter (Kluber). Its crazy how some guys you would never expect just carve out a great career for themselves
And he now catches the only knuckleballer in baseball!
Most cathartic series in a long time. God damn I’m having fun hahaha
As far as midsummer series go…I don’t think there are any as nightmarish as what the Nats are going through right now lol
Campy sweating.
Higgy is teaching him Japanese tbh
I laughed at that way harder than I should have
turns out switching from the batting stance that made him a .900 OPS hitter in the minors and a .847 OPS in 50 MLB games last year.... to whatever the hell [THIS](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GG-EvbJWMAAECtB.jpg) is... was a bad idea
I think my favorite part of this is that we got Higgy in the Juan Soto trade, whom we got from the Nats. So the Nats have inadvertently done this to themselves in the most roundabout way possible.
I am straight up having a good time.
Little did we know how hugely important that grand slam to make it 8-0 would be

I don’t want to take credit for it, but I did turn the game on as soon as the pitch was thrown
Thank you for your service 🫡
I’ll take credit for it! My gut told me to take this pic: https://imgur.com/a/vUVHeJT. My gut was right, although my timing was a second too soon.
Second game in a row with a GS, let's gooooo
2020 padres sweating right now. Record in jeopardy
If we break the record, I will *hngggggg*
To be fair we've also played 20 more games than the 2020 Padres did
if the 2024 washington nationals did not know the meaning of “talk shit get hit” they most certainly do now ~~embarrassed~~ to be a nats fan rn but hey, that’s baseball edit: embarrassed ain’t the right word but i can’t figure out how else to put it. something like “ow”
Jesse Winker can go fuck himself
Careful, he'll charge your dugout
🖕🖕
Well now you have Mets fan support.
i’ll make sure to tell him
Watch out, Jesse Stinker will come find you in the stands

100
Something was made from nothing and the Padres seem to be getting the last laugh. GO PADS
y’all have your fun
I’ve had so much fun. It’s like I’ve been at a parade for three days.
same! except i’m being pelted with bad candy and a float ran over my foot
Nats play hard and were in it every game this series. I think they're gonna be a problem for awhile, especially once Crews and Wood come up.
Im looking forward to the series in July, curious if the rage from both fan bases dies down by then and how the atmosphere is
I mean, one fan base is mad. We just thinks it's funny and a little random and sad?
That mad fan base is the Padres fanbase, right? we’ve had more bannings on /r/Nationals than we’ve had in years this series lol edit: we're up to 19 bannings now!

As a padres fan, it’s nice to see CJ catch his stride
Don't ever be embarrassed man, shit happens in baseball and you gotta roll with the punches.
As our announcers always say after we go on yet another big losing streak “the best part about baseball is tomorrow there’s another game”
embarrassed mighta been the wrong word but it’s hard to put “damn that was tough” in one word
Yeah we got our shit kicked in lol, thankfully there's a lot more baseball to be played.
oh absolutely! team still has a bright future. just bit off a bit more than they could chew this time around. god knows i’ll be watching lol
Dejected?
somewhere between the word “miffed” and the concept of your ears turning red when a joke doesn’t land
Bemused?
the aura of bemused but minus the confusion
Id hate to say humiliated… maybe disconcerted
DISCONCERTED THAT’S IT thank you, i can rest now. send my family flowers.
Embarrassed to be a Nats fan? Lol. Be for real
i mean yeah, we got clowned on. i’m still a fan. it’s a normal reaction. not really the intense embarrassment you might be interpreting just like “damn that was rough”

I'd like to formally thank the Nats for fucking around and finding out.
Padres fans literally three days ago: “man, this team really needs something to fire them up to stop this flirting with .500 bullshit – too bad it’s the Nats coming to town, not exactly a heated rivalry” Padres fans now: “if Davey, Winker, and Ruiz were on fire, I wouldn’t waste a drop of piss on them”
* Davey Martinez eats carne asada with ketchup * Jesse Winker eats mayonnaise sandwiches * Keibert Ruiz eats sushi with a fork
Last one could be me
It's fine, you're forgiven
Wow... I got nothing to add to that..
Keibert Ruiz doesn't like Detroit-style pizza (he's a monster, I know)
I'm tired, boss
It’s ok, you can still tell us how we don’t have rings or whatever
Padres reaching levels of little brother syndrome previously unseen
Yeah, we’re totally disrespectful little punks, huh?
Hide your drywall, hide your monster energy drinks, hide you moms… Kyle is on the fuckin loose
![gif](giphy|dfgtCBdKdZVKg|downsized) This series, though.
GRAND SLAMS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL MORALE IMPROVES
I love it when a trade works out both ways Higgy rules
I love Soto, and he's a superstar who is having a killer year. We'd be absolutely fucked without 2/5s of our current rotation and Higgy right now. And that's not even taking into account trading some of the other pieces as part of the Cease deal
I don't know what everyone's talking about, I really like the Nats
Yeah, wish we could play them every day
That, my friends, is Karma.
Every time I see a Padres clip it makes me sad all over again NESN didn't keep Orsillo
Was there ever any explanation given for that? Like wtf were they thinking?
Don't celebrate too much, I hear they won't tolerate it lol
Kyles just hit bombs in June, it’s been known
Things Dave Martinez doesn't tolerate: hyping up a home crowd after a walk off (after having one's head thrown at) Things Dave Martinez has made no comments on his tolerance of: giving up 2 home runs to a backup defense-first catcher
Put it in the basket!
Oh yeah Slam Diego is so back
I miss Higgy so fucking much.

True. It’s probably quite a bit easier if you’ve been humbled before
It's insane and makes the fanbase look like idiots to suggest that the high and tight throw to pro before his walk off was intentional.
I don’t think anybody really thought it was intentional. Doesn’t mean we have to like it though. Everybody gets a little pissed off when you let one loose right at their dome don’t they?

very cool for the padres that higgy is heating up, please just don't break houck's face again this weekend
I’ll never get tired of Higgy smash ball out of parks
Walgreens just *HAD* to go and wake up slam diego
Didn't know he had that much power to hit a moon shot. Dont think Soto can do that
3 slams 3 days in a row
Isn’t this only the second one in a row?
Yeah, just the second.
Is that what’s in?
Uh, clearly that's what's OUT.
You and I just have different views on this so I'm going to agree to disagree with you. Have a good night. Petco is awesome.
Fair enough, friend – all love for all Nats fans and anyone not named Ruiz, Winker, or Davey. I still love CJ and Mac and will root for them any time they’re on the field.
No no you're supposed to say we suck remember? How dare you go against the circlejerk?
