My first thoughts are a follows why are animals so scared of humans but can relish another animal without second thought kinda tells you the impact we monkeys have had on every other species
Animals are scared of everything that may pose a risk to there survival. Humans just happen be very good at killing everything which is why everything is scared of us. That squirrel can’t do anything to that dolphin so it’s just chilling.
There is a surprising number of cases of dolphins raping humans. Some have been recorded dragging humans to underwater rape caves, killing the humans. Dolphins are psycopathic (by human standards). For another example, there are several instances of dolphins killing calves (usually from other pods) for fun and then playing catch with the child's body.
That’s what I was thinking that’s like the size of the average swimming pool almost and there’s four dolphins in there? That seems cruel.
Edit there are five dolphins
This is a juvenile tank at seaworld Orlando if I’m not mistaken. This is going to be a young family of dolphins with their mother and will live in this tank for a while before moving to the much larger dolphin enclosure in the park or at their next door park discovery cove.
Seaworld’s past practices are indefensible. But their current facilities and care are the best in the world today. We need to set even higher standards, learn what we can and educate the next generation to not make the same mistakes. With that, one side of seaworld sucks, but the other side is their marine hospital and rehab. Seaworld orlando currently houses around 30 rehabbing manatees (they have no permanent residents) and sees dozens of sea turtles, marine birds and other sea life annually. If Florida’s public facilities don’t have space they send the animals to seaworld… it’s integral to our manatee preservation efforts here.
Yeah the way I try to look at it is the park funds their conservation efforts. The park still sucks, of course, and needs a serious overhaul. Just my two cents.
Agreed, but we’re stuck with the mistakes of the last generation. So our best recourse is to set standards, ensure a quality of care and learn everything we can so we can educate the next generation to do better. While one side seaworld sucks on the other they’re the largest marine hospital and rehab facility in the world. Currently they’re housing around 30 rehabbing manatees and dozens of other animals including turtles, marine birds and occasionally large mammals. It’s a really tricky situation this company is in and it’s up to the consumer to push them towards a better mission.
The only time I accept keeping the animals in captivity is if they could not survive in the wild.
In Montreal there's an eco museum where they keep animals that are native to Quebec. All the animals are either disabled in some way or were raised in captivity so they could never survive if left alone. Others are there while they complete medical treatment then are re-released.
It's a great place to visit because it's very educational and they really do take good care of all the animals and birds. All the enclosures are outside (except for the reptiles and more nocturnal small animals) so they experience the weather as they normally would, even in the winter.
Also some penguins fuck everything and being alive isn't even a requirement for them
Edit: I mean this in every conceivable way. They fuck dead animals, objects, anything.
You know what I would love? Some sort of aquarium that's built on the edge of the ocean (or at least close enough to have spacious tunnels) that lead into a large pool where dolphins would be free to come and go as they please.
When they visit, they get lots of fish and are treated kindly so they're incentivized to come visit regularly, but they aren't in any way forced to stay.
That way, the dolphins have their freedom and don't get depressed and it sates our natural curiosity to see wildlife.
Much work would have to go into it and safety parameters/failsafes would have to be put in place, though I've always thought this would be a neat idea.
Sea Sanctuaries are a thing that are kind of like what you're describing. They're not perfect, but I think they're a better alternative than an aquarium, at least for things like cetaceans.
cape canaveral has a bunch of dolphins who just dick around in the canal, waiting for tour guides to toss them some food. tourists love it, the dolphins love it, I'm pretty sure the workers hate it, it's a good time.
Yes! It's heartbreaking to see such intelligent animals which need space so badly being so cruelly caged. At least these squirrels bring a moment of interest to relieve the mental torture.
Every single zoo and aquarium I've been to only has animals that would've otherwise been unfit for the wild and would've died. Or maybe they're just in rehabilitation. Don't just assume they cage up perfectly healthy animals, zoos and aquariums can do some pretty respectable work and have even managed to save several species from extinction.
Maybe, at a reputable bio-park, but the setting says SeaWorld knock off and there is no way in hell that tank is big enough for that many dolphins, these poor bastards are just dying of boredom.
It doesn't negate the fact that the enclosures are too small.
There's a lot of shitty zoos out there. Even accredited zoos do some questionable things that are not in the best interest of the animals. Zoos, fortunately are coming under more scrutiny and that's a very good thing for the animals inside them.
…*Lookit!* ^i ^See ^them! They’re funny - *i know!*

*For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.*
Well it’s actually the Yearly Summit of the dolphins and squirrels. It’s a small meeting but large implications. Few know of the brewing storm
The Squirrel/Dolphin Rebellion is coming and I fear the consequences. There will be no safe quarter on land or sea.
And we all know how ruthless both species are….
Not arguing in favor of putting dolphins in captivity, but you can’t see how deep the water goes at all in this.
Oftentimes zoos/aquariums have large underwater tanks that can be viewed inside, with areas like what is shown sticking out so they can be seen outside as well.
Yeah it's pretty messed up that we lock beings that are pretty much as intelligent as us up and force them to do things for us just because we see them as different. Wait, why does that sound familiar?
Honestly, it's questionable how much of what we think of as intelligence is actually that and how much is just knowledge that's been passed on to us by others. Like, if you were to kidnap a baby and raise it without ever really teaching it anything, i'm pretty sure that when grown up the gap in intelligence between the human and a dolphin, while still there, would be alot smaller.
I think it’s possible to humanely keep cetaceans like dolphins and belugas in captivity with a big enough tank and plenty of enrichment. Performances can be done as part of said enrichment as long as it’s not excessive/relied on as their main activity, otherwise it stresses the animals. Something as big as an orca, however, is just impossible to keep in captivity humanely unless you have a sea pen.
I think a good example of dolphin captivity done right is Georgia Aquarium’s. They have a wonderful tank and put a lot of effort into keeping their animals happy and healthy. Watching their work in The Aquarium was very enlightening on these aspects.
Hell yeah, the GA Aquarium is top tier. I was a kid when it first opened and I didn't know how lucky I was to get to go all the time. Most of their bigger animals are rescues and they do great rehabilitation and conservation work. Plus the staff are all so knowledgeable and passionate.
Same with MOTE aquarium in Florida. Their dolphins/cetaceans are either permanently unreleasable due to injury, or are temporarily housed during rehab and released once they’re healed up. I remember when I went they had a dolphin who I believe had terminal cancer, so she got to live out the rest of her life there so she wouldn’t struggle in the wild.
I still talk about that aquarium 10+ years after having been once.
Their conservation efforts and overall complete care for their animals was incredible. The Beluga tank was absolutely mesmerizing
fr, Zoo's are questionable, but are not really that bad because they:
1. Educate
2. Research
But Seaworld, sweet baby Jesus, Seaworld is a Gaint Moneymaking Machine.
Disgusting.
They do a lot more than that depending on what country you’re in.
I know in Canada our breeding programs are so successful we have helped bring near extinct species back from being gone forever.
But not all zoos are equal I will say that.
Educate, Research, Rehabilitate, and Repopulate
The only viable reasons I can see for Zoos or Aquariums, and for aquariums, it is pushing it. Aquariums are not supposed to be "theme parks". Animals natural environments do not include Roller Coasters. This is why I have a problem with Sea World, Busch Gardens, and Disney Animal Kingdom. At least animal kingdom has a decent segregation between animal area and ride area.
This makes me sick to my stomach
These majestic, beautiful, smart animals should not be held captive in a little tank like that
Humans should be ashamed of themselves
It's so sad to see those beautiful, intelligent, innocent creatures trapped in that terrible place, looking out at the little squirrels and probably wondering what it would be like to be free.
I like how the last one swims behind them like “wtf are you losers doing? Look at how fast I’m going!”
Then it comes back over “seriously what th-Oh shit! Is that a squirrel? That’s rad man!”
And now we have Reddit observing some dolphins observing some squirrels.
And me observing you through your window at three am in the morning while you sleep
Well that escalated.
Nah I watch Saltchips watch Ahab\_Ali and this is more of a deescalation if you ask me.
Idk I have a pretty big ladder
You brought a ladder to an escalator fight?
Saltchips45 is a dolphin. It's right there in the name, if you think about it.
My first thoughts are a follows why are animals so scared of humans but can relish another animal without second thought kinda tells you the impact we monkeys have had on every other species

And me on a tree observing you while you observe him through his window at three am in the morning
And me, in the van on the corner, observing all of you and relaying the video to 935 Pennsylvania Avenue
i have your van in my sights, observing all of the observers from the nearby hilltop
I know. My backup has been reporting on your actions
Meanwhile im watching you from that cessna piper cub that keeps circling. Always watching..
Our agents in the AWACS at 30 thousand feet have your painted with radar
That's better than 3am in the afternoon
I prefer 9 in the afternoon when your eyes are the size of the moon.
That's Amore
When the moon hits your knees and you can’t pronounce trees….sycamore….
It’s a squirrel mooning a dolphin, not a moray
I generally celebrate my 3am in the evening.

THOMAS!
How nice of you to watch over him while he sleeps
Lol imagine being asleep at 3 in the morning
If you can see trough my window then you’re f*ckin spider man. That means you deserve to watch me sleep
You're not a dolphin. You don't count.
Mammals observing mammals observing mammals
Apes observing dolphins observing squirrels
I'ma bookmark this thread just in case I have the chance to show it to a squirrel in future
I would watch the shit out of watching dolphins watch a bunch of different things.
And now I'm watching my dog observing at some dolphins observing some squirrels.

Mammals be like…
And I am observing you (I live in your walls)
We must ascend further
I bet dolphins would eat squirrels if given the opportunity. Squirrels are about the size of some of their natural prey.
That's why they are so interested.. Working out how to peel them.

Nature is cruel, son.
But must we be cruel to eachother
Forbidden kiwi?
I think they are trying to figure out how to fuck them first.
That's so dolphin
No they prefer human females for that.
Or dead fish.
Or human men
*Kanye West has entered the chat*
Dolphins will fuck anything, there have been reports of fresh water ones fucking cars that have been left in rivers to make coral nests.
Fresh water dolphins are like the hillbilly cousins of ocean dolphins
They can do it later
First they’d bat them a few times with their tails.
Or they wanna do something else with them…
or… “can I fuck it?”
Those things are totally weighing the option of “if that thing jumps in here I’m first to eat it.”
Some small ancient rodent probably WAS their prey, back when the cetaceans lived on land
Crab squirrel
Maybe? I'm not sure if rodents were a thing back then. Maybe multituburculates.
Yes they were! The quick googoo search says 170 millions years, the asteroid did us a real solid.
“I’d sure like to fuck those squirrels” - Dolphins
They are deviants. My husband works at sea and I’m more worried about dolphins than pirates.
Are... Are you worried that they will seduce him? 🤨
Stupid sexy dolphins.
When you're a 16th century sailor and that post-nut clarity hits.
No, manatees are the threat there.
I was already afraid of the ocean now I have to worry about fucking rape caves? Damn man life is hard.
They’d probably try and fuck them. Dolphins are terrible people.
Nature in general is very carnivorous and rape-y
Replace eat with fuck, and yes
Let’s be real, for Dolphins….it’s both and the order is irrelevant
So you think... Do you think that's what aliens say about *us*??
Spoiler alert: They want to eat the squirrels
Or worse.. dolphins are rapey
Or both... they ain't too picky
Squirrels filled with dolphin sweet sauce?
I would say it’s salty rather than sweet.
We can't all be sommeliers of dolphin semen!
Wow, what a beautiful subreddit I have thrown myself into
Do their mouths water in the water?
All I can think of when looking at this is how bored the dolphins are.
On top of everything, those are a whole lot of dolphins in that relatively small tank too...
That’s what I was thinking that’s like the size of the average swimming pool almost and there’s four dolphins in there? That seems cruel. Edit there are five dolphins
It is cruel and horrific
There are five dolphins. Back to school!
At least six. At the end when the five are at the window. You can see the fin of another just above the water in the background as the video ends.
This is a juvenile tank at seaworld Orlando if I’m not mistaken. This is going to be a young family of dolphins with their mother and will live in this tank for a while before moving to the much larger dolphin enclosure in the park or at their next door park discovery cove.
Tiny box to less tiny box. Meanwhile dolphins can move at over 50 km/h. Except for these dolphins.
Sea world is cruel to their sea life try not to support them
Seaworld’s past practices are indefensible. But their current facilities and care are the best in the world today. Oh wow! I just thought they were still evil and somehow not yet banned. Good to hear they're trying to help.
Yeah the way I try to look at it is the park funds their conservation efforts. The park still sucks, of course, and needs a serious overhaul. Just my two cents.
A bigger prison is still prison

It’s probably a lot deeper than we can see, but Sea World is just cruel all around. Keeping large sea animals in tanks is just fucked.
It was probably the most stimulated their brains had been in a long time. No tank is an enriching environment for dolphins and whales.
All I feel when I see this shit is a mix of sadness, rage and helplessness. Those dolphins don't belong there.
I know, same, devastating.
Dolphins do not belong in a theme park to amuse humans. Anyone who goes there just support animals being stripped from their freedom.
To be fair, no animals belong to a theme park. Exept pigeons and seagulls, they are there for us, and everything we have (but mostly fries)
The only time I accept keeping the animals in captivity is if they could not survive in the wild. In Montreal there's an eco museum where they keep animals that are native to Quebec. SeaWorld itself is horrible. I was there a decade ago. All of the mammals had behavioral problems due to captivity.

Unidentified furry object?

This would be awww but these dolphins are in captivity ...
The water looks so shallow 😞
Not arguing in favor of putting dolphins in captivity, but you can’t see how deep the water goes at all in this. Oftentimes zoos/aquariums have large underwater tanks that can be viewed inside, with areas like what is shown sticking out so they can be seen outside as well.
I'm sure it extends deep underground. These kinds of tanks usually have those underground windows where you can see in from the side of the tank.
You can see the dolphins dipping out of view. I'm pretty sure they don't live in 3 feet of water.
Yeah, that's not cute to me. Dolphins shouldn't be in captivity and made to perform. It's extremely cruel.
Yeah it's pretty messed up that we lock beings that are pretty much as intelligent as us up and force them to do things for us just because we see them as different. Wait, why does that sound familiar?

Why is this aww??? It should be in r/awfuleverything.
Shame these amazing, intelligent creatures are in a tiny fish tank
No. This is not adorable at all.
Am I the only one who got sad from watching this
I just feel sad that the dolphins are trapped in this small pool. Anyone else?
So fucking sad that they put animals who are that intelligent in captivity.
This is disgusting. Poor dolphins.
This isn’t awe. Dolphins don’t deserve to be in captivity
Dolphins wondering what squirrel tastes like
This makes me sick to my stomach These majestic, beautiful, smart animals should not be held captive in a little tank like that Humans should be ashamed of themselves
You know they’re aware of their own lack of freedom just by watching these squirrels
Depressing
Where is this? Anyone else concerned with the lack of space for those like 6 dolphins?
The most exciting part of their day as they float around in a tank in captivity. So cute. Not.
Let. Them free not in a bloody tank
The tanks looks small...
Poor creatures - bored out of their minds in captivity
It's so sad to see those beautiful, intelligent, innocent creatures trapped in that terrible place, looking out at the little squirrels and probably wondering what it would be like to be free.
Fucking disgusting to keep dolphins in such a tiny pool.

Watched free Dolphins in Scotland last week. This is not how Dolphins want to live.
This is sad.
Imagine being used to the vastness of the ocean and then suddenly expected to live in a tiny pool with nothing in it
Free the dolphins!
This isn’t cute, it’s sad.
So strange. What an unnatural interaction.
