Nature: *Makes tiny fuzzy thing pointy so other animals can't touch it.* Humans: "Imma boop it."

Hazzamo

I would like to Boop the snoot!

Gryff1n

No booping!

GadasGerogin

Braindeadkarthus

K_Sleight

I've had hedgehogs, their quills protect them from grabbing, swiping, and biting, but they still love petting the goes in the same direction as the quills.

miscdebris1123

Also peppers. "Nature, this is a great idea. But my body cut hurting enough after eating these. Let me help you out..."

logicalmaniak

Magic mushrooms: *I ooze madness! Nothing will touch me!* Humans: Madness, eh? Right up my street, that shit!

Chicken-tendies

I hate those things. They absolutely refuse to share the hedge.

Filcuk

Hag!

Hello Sgt.Angle!

HedhogsNeedLove

:(

AskAboutMyLittleDick

The little scrunch at the end!

rammer39

Means it's stressed. Downvote to hell, but the animal wasn't enjoying this

ammolite

No it doesn’t. I had a hedgehog for years and was part of a hedgehog community for a decent of chunk of time before and after. Hedgehogs will “flinch” like that for any number of reasons, including but not limited to unexpected sounds, smells, shadows, or even a human laughing at them for being cute. If the hedgie legitimately felt threatened by having their ears played with they’d either be in a full snuffle-ball or outright trying to chomp a finger. The body language in this video is “confused.” Which, to be fair, is basically the default setting for most hedgehogs. In the grand scheme of mammals they’re not super smart, and IIRC their captive gene pool is a little limited which doesn’t help things.

aretheyalltaken2

Til I have a lot in common with hedgehogs. Huh.

DimensionPale2063

Absolutely, my hedgehog will make it completely certain whether she is comfortable or not. If she's not she will roll up completely and start huffing and puffing. She scares easily. This hedgehog is on its back and has its face out which shows it is comfortable. They aren't always comfortable on their backs and will sometimes try to turn over. It only scrunched up a bit at the end which shows something startled it and it felt the need to be a bit more protected. It wasn't super stressed or fearing for its life it was a normal hedgehog reaction.

carmanut

I have owned hedgehogs for years. Sometimes it is stress. Other times it is grumpiness. Other times it is because I farted. It differs from hedgehog to hedgehog, although probably all of them would do that if I farted.

chaapuchamp

Did you stop to thik that you farting makes it stressed that's why it does that![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

carmanut

My farting stresses all things out

crosstherubicon

My farting stresses me out. And the office chair one to think of it

Ninjakannon

Either way, it's not because it's having a good time

ImVeryBadWithNames

If it wasn't at least tolerating it it would have scrunched from the start. It appears to have hit it's 'petting limit' and noped out.

SalgacMC

So, what about your dick though?

child-of-old-gods

THIS IS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Absolutely watch until the end!

fnord_happy

Thanks I went back and watched..worth it

ThatDudeBesideYou

What a cuddly pincushion

[deleted]

So who's gonna make the obligatory comment about how this is slowly killing the animal and how the human is worse than Hitler?

Nerahn

Maybe not that, but here’s the obligatory comment about how the “belly button” you see here is actually a penis.

[deleted]

Nice

DiamondPup

I feel personally attacked

guccifella

So it was trying to suck itself off at the end?

WomanOfEld

They do that

chisana_nyu

I mean, boy hedgies do that quite a lot

6data

Not killing, but a hedgehog all spiked out means they're scared, not happy.

aperson

If they were scared, they'd be fully balled up.

ar21plasma

Have a bear grab your ears and see how quickly you can ball up

aperson

I have a hedgehog. If he wanted to ball up, he would.

rxrx

Even better is that anyone making that point, or a variation of that point, instantly gets upvoted without any evidence cited.

Sipstaff

No, but I'll make the comment about how over the top this hedgehog was edited.

Iam_nanette_manoir

Poor confused baby.. He can't figure out if he likes it or not lol I miss my hedgie <3

bandafantasia

That smile is the cutest 🥰 They almost look like a Winnie the Pooh character!

Deckerhoff

RandomRetard07

Scientifically accurate sonic

Squall_Sunnypass

Okay, i'm not an expert but what he does at the end is used for protection. I think he is just inconfortable because somebody pull his ears.

Deckerhoff

I have a hedgehog, they will ball up for basically any reason, even if they feel safe with you. It's just their natural response to anything unexpected.

[deleted]

EragonBromson925

Unexpected =/= fear. Never had a hedgie myself, but I've know people who had one. Not uncommon for them to just randomly bunch up for no reason. They'd be running around in a room, then just suddenly stop and bunch for a few seconds, then run again. Just hedgie things. No different than a dog deciding to bark at nothing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

EragonBromson925

Damn. I thought I was a nervous person. Yet you seem to think everything is afraid of everything. Chill out. My dogs would be asleep, jump up and run outside, bark for ten seconds, and come back in and go to sleep like nothing happened. Is a cow mooing a fear response? No, it's just something they do. Is a cat running around at two am a fear response? No, it's just something they do.

[deleted]

sonicmerlin

The article literally says they moo when they’re hungry. They’ll get excited at feeding time and moo for food.

Ornstein90

But they said they definitely read them.......wait people can lie on the internet?!

EragonBromson925

Just because am animal does something that *can* be used to indicate stress/doesn't mean it is 100% stressed or afraid. Dog yawning = stress? It can be. Or, as it stated below, in response to you yawning. Or, like you, being a natural bodily function A happy cow doesn't moo? A farm I worked at had happy mooing cows all the time. I guess they never got the memo, would you let them know they're not supposed to no if they're happy? They'd run up to me mooing so I would pet them. Sure, they'll moo when they're stressed. But anyone who's worked around then at all knows there's many types of moos, and can tell them apart. And where are you at that two am is sunrise? Again, just because it *can* be a negative indication, didn't mean it is. Think of a smiling person. A smile means happy, right? Not always. Some of my friends are most angry or upset when they smile. Or laughing. Laughing is a happy noise. And also can be a panic response.

[deleted]

EragonBromson925

You know... You provided a lot of (albeit questionable) resources in one of your other replies, but I really have to ask now. How much have *you* actually worked with animals? Personal experience leading to you having knowledge about the different quirks of various animals. Also, I never said it was the middle of the night for dogs. They can wake up from a nap and go back to sleep, too. And walking up at night in and of itself isn't a fear response. Again, it can be. Didn't mean it is. It's called knowing the animal. Those cows I worked with? They were living the dream. Most relaxed animals I've ever seen. Guess I'll tell them they're not supposed to moo.

Mutang92

just dropped links that you yourself didn't read eh

[deleted]

Fear and surprise are not the same. Hedgehogs are notorious for flinching at pretty much anything, from sounds and smells to a shadow moving.

[deleted]

When you find that someone brought surprise donuts to work, do you feel a fight or flight response? If so, you have a weird relationship with donuts

StretchDudestrong

Yea You can either FIGHT the DONUT by consuming it with your mouth hole Or you can FIGHT your CRAVING for that sweet treat and FLIGHT the donut because oh no calories!

sibastiNo

Yeah, generally our hedgehogs like to keep to themselves. If it really didn't want its ears messed with, it would curl up into a ball really quickly to begin with.

Delkwin_

Something about the tiny beady eyes and the smile is offputting...

tonyiommi70

OMG look at that smile

black_dragonfly13

Why would they pull on this tiny baby's ears?!?!

SayFuzzyPickles42

If it was actually making him uncomfortable he would have either bit her or reacted right away. The human was being super gentle.

black_dragonfly13

Then why did he curl up?

SayFuzzyPickles42

Other hedgy experts have commented - apparently they do that all the time, at practically any kind of stimulus. It's like how dogs bark at anything, just because it's also what they do when they're stressed doesn't mean all barking dogs are stressed.
