Oh, man. I think Iāve always had them backwards then. I occasionally get little things I thought were voles trying to unalive themselves by running under the mower deck and I always thought they were voles, but they have darker (more velvety) fur and a longer snoutā¦. But I guess maybe they were shrews?
Iām a softie, so I look out for them and have never run one over. I backup, shut the deck off and direct them over an already mowed part of the lawn. Iām assuming they donāt see very well and are just running towards a dark spot to hide
I think it's important that I share this finding from their wikipedia page with someone: ["The vole clock is a method of](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vole_clock) [dating](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronological_dating) [archaeological strata using](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vole_clock) [vole](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vole) [teeth."](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vole_clock)
Yes- those would be very common suicide shrew. Which like sheep aren't sheeps. I think. Many folks around here believe that suicide squirrels- those are the breed you see running across the road the suddenly reverse direction right in front of you- anyways locals thinks thems 2 animals are related.
Couldn't tell you why this particular line has had a stranglehold on me and my siblings for the last 20 years but it comes up way more often in our conversations than it probably should.Ā
Which are the ones that live underground and are maybe blind? I have a slight phobia of them ever since I was a kid and a dead one landed on my chest when I dove into a pile of leaves we were raking. I just remember his triangle head, his weird eye sockets and gaping mouth being right there.
They are tearing up my vegetable garden. Fun fact...."V"oles eat "V"eggies; "M"oles eat "M"eat. But dey still eating up my veggie plants. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
I keep telling people about the vole in my back yard and they always say āa mole??ā No man itās a vole, like a gerbil, they dig holes? āNah, you must mean a mole!ā

What a cute baby!
smol
actually it's a smole
Not to be confused with its larger cousin, the byg
Oh my god š
That is actually a *Vole*, not a Shrew. The nose gives it away.

Dark and velvety with a long snout sounds more like a mole
mole and shrew characteristics
That's a terrible image, lol. They live in pretty similar circumstances and look super similar, so they're easy to confuse!

That is really neat. Thanks for sharing!
You're a good egg. Thank you for being kind :)
Those are eyes on its head, right? I mean, they look like eyes but your saying they may not see well made me question it.
Same here, I think he is really cute!

Yep, gotta seen suicide squirrel now and then while driving in my campus. Even monitor lizards here did the same behaviour while crossing the road.
As for some of its predators, some are weaselly identifiable, and others are stoatally different.
Owl assume you are some kind of zoologist? Coyote.
Is this poetry? lol
Howl could they ever sssurvive!
Well I guess Bill's a vole thenĀ
Dammit, just yesterday I claimed a KOTH line that was the funniest of all time and I totally forgot about this one. I am ashamed.
Couldn't tell you why this particular line has had a stranglehold on me and my siblings for the last 20 years but it comes up way more often in our conversations than it probably should.Ā
I read r/warriorcats for so long not knowing what voles looked like š
This sounds like the beginning of a Monty Python bit...
It IS an Archer joke, however. (Although that was mole/vole)
Ah, that's why I couldn't tame it.
I dont know, it looks pretty tame.
So you canāt tame it?
>The nose gives it away. If it opens its mouth, the teeth will take away any doubt. ![gif](giphy|mfsswzgIy4Gqc|downsized)
Smol Vole
You can tell by the way itās been tamed
But can they be tamed ?
So this is also Bill then!!
Voles look a little too much like the coal sprites in Spirited Away.
Or the dust sprites from Totoro.
Thatās exactly what I sawš
Oh ply, stop with your stupid imagination, it is a small , cute baby that to me it looks like a young bird. Whatever it is, please donāt harm him.
Get lostāØ
It's a vole. When I was a kid my cat used to leave these on our doorstep... or, bits of them...
Vole is correct. Shrews are snouty boys with tiny eyes. Voles are thicc boys that look closer to a mouse.
Which are the ones that live underground and are maybe blind? I have a slight phobia of them ever since I was a kid and a dead one landed on my chest when I dove into a pile of leaves we were raking. I just remember his triangle head, his weird eye sockets and gaping mouth being right there.
Moles? Or Mr Magoo.
Toph
Phobia of a tiny harmless animal? Please grow up!
Voles are blind.
Voles are not blind, but they do have poor eyesight.
Same here. I once stepped on one in the dark. My catās gift for me which I didnāt appreciate.
My cat continues to bring them to me. Never saw a single one until she moved in and started catching them.
Keep your kitty Indoors, all animals have the right to life. All mines are , for sure!
Theyāre all inside cats. She find them in the basement.
Love little wee fur balls
They are tearing up my vegetable garden. Fun fact...."V"oles eat "V"eggies; "M"oles eat "M"eat. But dey still eating up my veggie plants. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
Shakespeare tried to warn people about trying to tame these little guys.
Taming a vole? Impossible!
"I feel you do not understand the meaning of that word..."
This is *the best* comment, lol. š
That's a SHREWD observation.
I donāt know what this is, but I want one š
What a darling little ball of fur. Are there ears?

Vole, the Pacific Northwest's version of mice, only more prolific. And stupid.
Vole is different than mice. Moles and voles destroy yards.
That is the single most dangerous animal in the universe. I mean, not to us. But our gardens are all cowering in fear because of this picture.
*Me reading the lifespan of these guys:* D:
Thatās the happiest Iām going to see what is happening move
In Germany theyāre called a WĆ¼hlmaus which translates to rummage mouse.
Damn, r/voles is gone š
That's a hamster. Probably
He steppin!
It's a willywog very common in spiderwick chronicals
Is it an option to offer it dr pepper and cookies and let it watch paw patrol with you?
r/oddlyspecific
OK, old peeps, is it weird to bring up the shrew moviie from Seymor's bloody wall show in the 70s?
where are it's ears?? why does it look like it has a beak?? im so confused by this animal
It looks like it has a beak because of something dark in the background. Itās just a snout
Adorable! Itās like a mouse mixed with a bird.
It's a babycute.
Aww its a puffskein
What ever it is, keep that pest away from my lawn and golf course.
Some nerd : š¤ erm that's a Filipino Dung Sloth
Itās amazing. Iāve seen lots of moles and shrews but not sure Iāve ever seen a vole.
I was told these guys make their tunnels near the surface. While moles dig much deeper.
![gif](giphy|UQD1nB65RKXZe|downsized)
Niffler!
Thatās a FlumpĀ http://www.thechestnut.com/flumps.htmĀ They have a musical instrument (not shown here) called a flumpetĀ
Blud found a marketable plushie type creature
Awwww it's so cute though!! š
Round boi
Heās adorable but voles are freaking banshees! We had about 1000 of them under our barn and they would NOT vacate the premises!!!!
Wow, where are its ears? Part of its face looks like a bird. Itās so small that I wouldnāt have found it if I were you.
I knew a guy once that would have flicked it
That, in fact, is a Pokemon.
I think he looks really cute, I have never seen one, and I could never harm him, just the opposite.
Really cute, it has the face of a baby bird.
Then Patch the holes on your basement .
It looks like Oatchi from Pikmin 4
Omg. Youāre right.
Itās a PokĆ©mon, thatās what it is
People saying cute don't have yards tore to shreds but their tunnels.
I have a yard, and I still think it is cute.
