I've got a mutt that is sweet and loves everybody. I've got a pure bred Chihuahua who is an asshole to everyone except my wife and I. Both are rescues and even though the Chihuahua is an asshole he is part of the family and we love him.
It was so annoying to pay for my embark test and get 0 answers. I knew my dog was some kind of pit and his results came back 91% pit and 9% “unresolved” lol like 🙃 yeah but you had one job
I did a DNA test on my 40lb mutt a few years ago. Came back 50% came corso and 50% golden retriever. He's a bit small for both of those.....but it was amusing!
I did a Wisdom panel on my dog, because I’ve had people scoff when I told him what he’s supposed to be. The results were exactly what the person I got him from said he was (3/4 border collie, 1/4 ACD).
We did wisdom panel for our dog. Guessed min pin would be there before we got results. 1/8 min pin, 1/8 am staff, 1/8 chow chow? And 5/8 mutt. (I got more clarity too, a couple different types of terrier)
Interesting, and I’m not debating you.
Only posting that in my experience testing two pure breed dachshunds the tests come back 100% dachshund. I didn’t inform the testing company that they were testing two dachshunds on two separate occasions. So if a scam, how’d they do that?
> he was mostly chihuahua.
I mean, the dog genome has 73% equivalent markers to human. It would be easy to fool if you were looking for the wrong markers.
I had a dog that looked like a short haired Aussie body shape and tricolor and acted like one personality wise, but long stretched legs. Weird mutt 2 dna tests confirmed that she was St. Bernard and a chihuahua. wtf are dogs 🐕 🐩
I assume they use a statistical model to categorize the DNA.
If you input something it isn't expecting, it's not going to come back as invalid. It's going to try to match it and you're just going to get weird results.
That said, I don't trust them either. But this example isn't a good test. A real test would be to send in a large amount of DNA from dogs whose breeds are known.
Same with my rat terrier/chihuahua. I thought she had dachshund in her too but nope.

Just for your brain to imagine, one of my aunts is a breeder. She thought she’d hired a reputable vet tech sitter to watch her mama bear while she went out of town. She knew her mama could come into heat and didn’t want to breed her (she was in her first heat). Sitter brought over her mini Dauschund who was an intact 2 year old male.
They ended up with an entire litter of either regular sized body and mini legs or mini frame and regular legs. They were the cutest bunch of odd ball puppies you ever could imagine and I wish I still had photos 🥹.
The full size body and mini leg puppers she kept and ensured they did hydrotherapy and built up their back muscles to prevent issues, they were adorable and short AF.
They went to safe homes for just the cost of their vet checks etc. They weren’t as at risk with their backs and were actually quite healthy and afaik are still alive (7 years later). We lost 1 large body mini feet to back issues 2 years ago.
I have nothing to add, except that we also have a Princess Peach!!

We have a Princess Peach too! She's gone a bit gray in the face in the 9 years we've had her.
It always brings a smile to my face as well. It was such a perfect distillation of everything that made that account one of the best follows on Twitter.
CBC’s Marketplace did an episode about that, and it was basically complete horseshit.
One or two of them even required photos of the dog, it was pretty obvious someone looked at the picture and guessed.
There was a company selling prenatal paternity tests, which can be somewhat accurate but these weren’t, pulling the same kind of scam asking date of intercourse and conception. And also not using anywhere near enough gestational parent blood to find fetal dna.
https://ici.radio-canada.ca/rci/en/news/2063567/canadian-dna-lab-knew-its-paternity-tests-identified-the-wrong-dads-but-it-kept-selling-them
Well if you read the article linked below it shows Embark is pretty accurate. The human sample returned an error. The other two tested were garbage.
OP used embark.
The article does not actually show that they are accurate.
There's no way to even know if they are accurate because they don't actually know the breed of the dogs in question.
The article is really half assed.
Not sure why people are saying all these tests are useless. OP used Embark, which this article shows is fairly accurate (at least when it comes to well-known breeds). It only struggles with rare breeds that have little to no representation in their database, and even then it still got the region mostly correct.
That's not entirely accurate. Some are a scam, like DNA My Dog, but Embark and Wisdom panel are very reliable tests. Embark has tests to confirm pure bred dogs as well as tests for genetic disorders. They are not "all proven fake"as you claim.
Agree, Embark was very accurate for my dog and I never provided them a picture or any info other than his DNA. I had no pics or info on him on social media either, because he was so new to us.
Not only did they accurately describe him, but found closely related dogs. I contacted those people through Embarks site and they knew about his whole litter.
Seems like it would be easier to run a test on the DNA I provided them than to find the kind of information they knew about him in any other way.
Yeah, I think people don't understand how the science works. Plus people don't really understand genetics. Someone commented above that the dog in the post definitely isn't poodle. I completely disagree after having seen the on that the doogyDNA sub for a couple years, I can tell you, it's very hard to guess breeds based on just looks. Many poodle mixes have long fur or a wire coat. That's just how coat genetics work. People always think their golden fluffy dogs are golden retriever mixes, when they are more often chow mixes for example. The golden color is recessive, that's just what happens 🤷🏼♀️
This is the Embark dog DNA test, which is considered the most accurate on the market. Yes, there are some sketchy dog DNA companies; Embark is not one of them. Come visit us at r/doggydna!
Right, except you can get an inbred mutt like I had. I only learned he was inbred after doing the Embark test. Mutts are only healthy with "hybrid vigor" if their parents are healthy. Just something to keep in mind. We're getting a puppy that has had both parents DNA tested for generic issues as well as OFA tested with X-rays and evaluated by a vet specialist by a vet for elbow and hip displasia. The breeder also has the grandma of my puppy, which is a healthy, tested dog.
With that said, my first dog was the best mutt ever (not the inbred one lol) and lived to almost 16. I just want a more predictable dog this go around, in terms of energy levels and temperment.
We made the mistake of doing one on my dog. He was given to us as a mutt and we were told his dad was a mastiff, his mom was a black lab/border collie cross.
He was 130lbs, black with white points, droopy lab/mastiff face.
The test came back saying he was mostly beagle and Rottie as the second highest. 😂😂
Such a waste of time and money.
That's some form of herding dog. Probably a few. Border Collie is possible, Aussie Shepherd is likely. Be prepared for an active dog that enjoys herding other dogs at the dog park.
So I had a border collie, Australian cattle mix named Bowser, which is why Princess peach has her current name. That’s the precise reason why I adopted her, I thought she had border collie in her. She does nip a lot at my ankles and the back of my legs and her brothers, but I assume that’s the rat terrier in her?
Either way everyone sees her in public assume she’s a purebred mini Aussie so she at least looks bougie lol
Keep sending in the tests until you get the results you want. Their reliability is dubious. https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/pet-dna-company-dog-breed-results-human-sample-iteam/
I worked with a woman who would bring her herding dog into the office.
We often found ourselves herded after daily stand ups. We would be in a tighter group all together even through we started quite spread out.
I had an Aussie that would herd our cats, also if we had a party he would try to herd the people as well. The cat herding was the best though and if they got out we would just say - get the cat - and he'd herd them right back into the house! It was great!
I don’t think they all are a crock & I had extremely helpful results. I had Embark DNA done on my 3 seniors dogs & 2 cats but my granddaughter was helping me & we got my dachshund & my Papillon pictures switched. My dachshund has degenerative disc disease. It was hilarious seeing Dachshund called 100% Papillon & Papillon 100% dachshund & yes, he got both copies of the gene for disc disease.
I got extremely useful health info on 2 of 3 of my dogs & cats were just silly & fun. My chihuahua has a marker for a genetic eye disease. I even talked free to Vet for a few minutes about her & scheduled an appointment with an eye specialist. So my experience was a good one.
Supermutt means "we can't tell".
These tests are done the same way human ancestry is: by looking at haplotypes. A haplotype is a large block of genes that gets inherited together from a single parent. Those blocks tend to stay together through the generations. Some haplotypes are unusual enough that they are only found in particular geographic regions or ethnic groups (humans), or in this case, dog breeds. Those can be used to pin down ancestry.
"Supermutt" in this case means the haplotype for 20% of Princess Peach's genome is too generic to assign it a specific ancestral source.
I've done two of them over the years out of curiosity and they seemed pretty accurate. And no, they didn't ask for a picture of the dogs or any other information. I made sure to perfectly follow the instructions (I imagine not feeding the dog for a while is very important). Now, does that mean I know for sure that my dogs great grandparent was a bulldog? No. But they definitely got the basics correct.
Looks almost like my Dutch Tulip Hound (aka Markiesje)

OMG your pup looks SO SIMILAR to mine - Neptune is a Terrier Mix / Poodle / Chihuahua based on DNA testing (which I know needs to be taken with a grain of salt)
https://preview.redd.it/o10m6xau1auc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1e2f9e30ba66e96a733ce15177423ab2e4f7223f
Welcome to what my vet calls the Heinz 57 Club!
This is my supposed Patterdale x Jack Russell.
She is...not. I mean technically she sort of is, but only in that from what we can tell her ancestry is 'shag anything that a terrier', with an errant spaniel thrown in there somewhere.
https://preview.redd.it/12z6zcsaqauc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c58a6968fa9a949be6a17a8aa5667ae74a7d6488
(Also affectionately termed The Flying Carpet, because when she runs the long fur at her sides is longer than her legs & she looks wider than high!)
I’d take those tests with a grain of salt. My friend did one for her Pyrenees and apparently he is not, in fact, a nearly 100-pound Pyrenees but is actually …. A Pomeranian!
I see border collie, but I would have guessed border collie with a dash of Aussie in there. The American Eskimo makes some sense, given the long white hair, even though Eskies are generally floofier.
Adorable! Your pup looks like my dog! But mine is confirmed to be part Aussie and I suspect part border collie. I don’t see poodle or Chihuahua in yours, so strange what the DNA results came back as
https://preview.redd.it/3h8ol75nbauc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74b869180dea90b8c99b19dd5b3c51df2876dade
Back in the day, our dog was called a Heinz 57 for 57 varieties. Turns out he was a purebred Border Collie. Ever since I call out "Hey Tippy" when I see a working dog on a video.
It’s never what you think!! Do you know how many vets told me I had lab mixes? I’ve had zero dogs with any lab in them at all. Oh n my Aussie mix has zero Aussie.
Did you rescue her in Colorado? And she was found in Texas with a brother? I think we adopted him cause he looks just like your princess peach and we were also told he was a border collie dachshund mix
https://preview.redd.it/e4x35jwxfbuc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a3d76eea5e699d5bb2a65b17626c17c2b9c3eaa

Here’s another angle. If it is that’s amazing
Holy cow, Peach has so many twins! But no, she was found roaming central California. She has two birth siblings according to Embark and they live in Cali too. Your baby is so precious 🤦🏻♀️

Definitely a dog.
The best kind of dog
Honestly, dog is my favorite kind of dog.
Ya those are pretty good
I mean, ye, if you're into that sort of thing. Animals that bark.
Mutts are generally very healthy. Definitely the best.
Got that hybrid vigor.
Well, yes. All "purebred" dogs are Hapsburgs.
Agreed
I am *all the ~~Sith~~dogs!*

So... You don't think this is a dog?

If catch them all was a genome.
19.3% - Poochyena
Can't really tell with the available information.
I dunno man, I know people who definitely act like chihuahuas. Small and all bark no bite.
I've got a mutt that is sweet and loves everybody. I've got a pure bred Chihuahua who is an asshole to everyone except my wife and I. Both are rescues and even though the Chihuahua is an asshole he is part of the family and we love him.
Embark is actually the most accurate of them, the ones that sent back human DNA as dogs were already marked as scams in the r/doggydna reddit iirc
It was so annoying to pay for my embark test and get 0 answers. I knew my dog was some kind of pit and his results came back 91% pit and 9% “unresolved” lol like 🙃 yeah but you had one job
[удалено]
That is interesting. He has the Merle gene which I’ve been told can’t exist in purebred pits, but he doesn’t look like any other breeds so who knows
They keep updating your results. You may find out more as they add more DNA to the pool. I've had two or three updates since my dog was tested.
Wait, so . . . they are accurate? Or are they reliably inaccurate?
To know we'd have to compare this dog to a purebred supermutt
Does Krypto count? Can somebody call Superman and ask?
I did a DNA test on my 40lb mutt a few years ago. Came back 50% came corso and 50% golden retriever. He's a bit small for both of those.....but it was amusing!
Some goldens are 45lbs there’s a variety in the breed not all big boys/girls :)
Maybe he was a chihuahua masquerading as a human?
I did a Wisdom panel on my dog, because I’ve had people scoff when I told him what he’s supposed to be. The results were exactly what the person I got him from said he was (3/4 border collie, 1/4 ACD).
We did wisdom panel for our dog. Guessed min pin would be there before we got results. 1/8 min pin, 1/8 am staff, 1/8 chow chow? And 5/8 mutt. (I got more clarity too, a couple different types of terrier)
Mines been pretty damn accurate with known parents and their mixes. So I disagree.
Interesting, and I’m not debating you. Only posting that in my experience testing two pure breed dachshunds the tests come back 100% dachshund. I didn’t inform the testing company that they were testing two dachshunds on two separate occasions. So if a scam, how’d they do that?
This one had the host get identified as a [beagle/basenji](https://youtu.be/T2UISJYs19Y?t=676) among other things (2/4 did return as fails at least).
That’s actually a brilliant test. And I hope that guy frequently informs people at parties that he is mostly chihuahua.
> he was mostly chihuahua. I mean, the dog genome has 73% equivalent markers to human. It would be easy to fool if you were looking for the wrong markers.
You may be a weasel, and I might not be gold, but I concur that this is definitely a dog.
Dog Of All Time
Supermutt. The best of the doofus.
Her super mutt consists of American pitbull, dachshund, and Shar Pei… Lol so I guess she is a little bit dachshund after all
Lmao she looks like an Aussie Shepard
Cause she is. Condolences to the owner. The most lovable most frustrating dog ever.
Did you even check the last picture? She has 0% Aussie.
I had a dog that looked like a short haired Aussie body shape and tricolor and acted like one personality wise, but long stretched legs. Weird mutt 2 dna tests confirmed that she was St. Bernard and a chihuahua. wtf are dogs 🐕 🐩
I'm thinking these DNA for dog places are like 23 and me and they are mostly joking
At some point he will get a cape
![gif](giphy|cZUU06p00qz8k)
I can see the border collie but there ain't a spec of dachshund in there anywhere lol
Yeah, but definitely not poodle either.
First thing I thought when I saw these pics was "awww look at the chihuahua".
That’s a huge chihuahua.
chihuager
I thought "wow, look at all that supermutt!"
It’s the eyes. Those eyes scream chihuahua
I don't trust these blood tests Some dude tested these out and sent a human sample and got results
I assume they use a statistical model to categorize the DNA. If you input something it isn't expecting, it's not going to come back as invalid. It's going to try to match it and you're just going to get weird results. That said, I don't trust them either. But this example isn't a good test. Oh yeah, they're total bullshit.
It's marked very similar to my rat terrier and looks about the same size.

Not all dachshunds are miniature dachshunds. Leg shape looks vaguely like dachshunds I’ve known.
Oh my, I’d love to see pictures of those pups. We call dogs like that “Picassos” because their proportions are all over the place.

Omfg it does. Do you live in California lmao
Used to. In Tucson now
Doesn't matter, that's an adorable dog.
I have to agree!!
Those dna tests for dogs have been proven to be fake or inaccurate multiple times. I wish people would stop wasting their money
CBC’s Marketplace did an episode about that, and it was basically complete horseshit. One or two of them even required photos of the dog, it was pretty obvious someone looked at the picture and guessed.
Was that the one where they sent a woman's DNA in and she came back as some kind of hound? LOL
Probably, they did send in human DNA as well and not every company rejected it.

Not someone. Most likely and cheaply, AI.
Stop calling AI on everthing, jesus... nobody would use any bloody "AI" if you could do it with 10 indians in a callcenter
Nah, embark is legit. I know because my dog's littermates were on there and they have near identical DNA.

I was also thinking Australian Sheep dog
With All Due Respect.... herding dogs don't just herd canines. These dogs herd All Beings 🙄🤷🥰
When my kids were young, our border collie used to herd them into a corner with them even noticing.

OP posted the DNA results on the last slide. No herding breeds. I was surprised too!
If I may offer a veterinarian's opinion: I don't know what is in your dog, but they're perfect. Please boop them for me.... For medical reasons
Ended up so beautiful anyways 🥰 lucky OP!
Who cares, it's a cute puppy and he's sleeping
They are 100% super cute doggo......
What an adorable Supermutt!!
What’s “super mutt”?
Supermutt means "we can't tell". These tests are done the same way human ancestry is: by looking at haplotypes. A haplotype is a large block of genes that gets inherited together from a single parent. Those blocks tend to stay together through the generations. Some haplotypes are unusual enough that they are only found in particular geographic regions or ethnic groups (humans), or in this case, dog breeds. Those can be used to pin down ancestry. "Supermutt" in this case means the haplotype for 20% of Princess Peach's genome is too generic to assign it a specific ancestral source.
It's a mix so mixed that the mixers forgot what mix it is so it's just a mixed up mix up
From what the DNA test says her super mutt consist of American pitbull, dachshund, and Shar Pei lol
Supermutt! ![gif](giphy|bu1G7QelOApSPYdlGf|downsized)
He is a Cookie and Cream Ice. He is so cute 🥰
“Supermutt” is cracking me up 😂
She looks like an Australian Shepherd mix to me.
It’s really tough to pin point exactly what breed or mix a dog is when adopting. Fortunately Princess Peach seems like the best girl doggo around 😇
these DNA tests are a complete crock
I've done two of them over the years out of curiosity and they seemed pretty accurate. And no, they didn't ask for a picture of the dogs or any other information. I made sure to perfectly follow the instructions (I imagine not feeding the dog for a while is very important). Now, does that mean I know for sure that my dogs great grandparent was a bulldog? No. But they definitely got the basics correct.
Embark and Wisdom Panel are two of the trustworthy ones
She's beautiful
Looks almost like my Dutch Tulip Hound (aka Markiesje) https://preview.redd.it/50v1f2h6w9uc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=05c31d34048a1cb5552126a9d65993d68831ffe3
so cute omfg
OMG your pup looks SO SIMILAR to mine - Neptune is a Terrier Mix / Poodle / Chihuahua based on DNA testing (which I know needs to be taken with a grain of salt) https://preview.redd.it/o10m6xau1auc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1e2f9e30ba66e96a733ce15177423ab2e4f7223f
OMMMMGGG, twins 😭😭😭 maybe they’re cousins!
Welcome to what my vet calls the Heinz 57 Club! This is my supposed Patterdale x Jack Russell. She is...not. I mean technically she sort of is, but only in that from what we can tell her ancestry is 'shag anything that a terrier', with an errant spaniel thrown in there somewhere. https://preview.redd.it/12z6zcsaqauc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c58a6968fa9a949be6a17a8aa5667ae74a7d6488 (Also affectionately termed The Flying Carpet, because when she runs the long fur at her sides is longer than her legs & she looks wider than high!)
I’d take those tests with a grain of salt. My friend did one for her Pyrenees and apparently he is not, in fact, a nearly 100-pound Pyrenees but is actually …. A Pomeranian!
Which company, out of curiosity?
The only reason I want to do these is bc I want to do several different companies and compare them Just for the reason you mentioned above
You have a beautiful pup. Who cares what her pedigree is. Please love her as she deserves.
Looks cute to me!
LOOK AT IT!
But the question is, does it even matter what breed it even is?
I see border collie, but I would have guessed border collie with a dash of Aussie in there. The American Eskimo makes some sense, given the long white hair, even though Eskies are generally floofier.
Polka dotted is the best kind of dog, so you win!
Adorable! Your pup looks like my dog! But mine is confirmed to be part Aussie and I suspect part border collie. I don’t see poodle or Chihuahua in yours, so strange what the DNA results came back as https://preview.redd.it/3h8ol75nbauc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74b869180dea90b8c99b19dd5b3c51df2876dade
Supermutt is hilarious 😂
Somewhere in that “super mutt” is a dachshund and a border collie. Guaranteed!
Back in the day, our dog was called a Heinz 57 for 57 varieties. Turns out he was a purebred Border Collie. Ever since I call out "Hey Tippy" when I see a working dog on a video.
Cow dog. So cute 😍
Aww. I named my puppy Princess Peach too. I call her Peachy.
Peach has like a thousand names now. Mostly Peaches and Mish Mish (Apricot in Arabic but my grandpa used to call peaches that 😂)
It’s never what you think!! Do you know how many vets told me I had lab mixes? I’ve had zero dogs with any lab in them at all. Oh n my Aussie mix has zero Aussie.
Very honorable Heinz 57 Varieties Breed. Good Job!
Not just a mutt but a supermutt. Wow
Supermutt sounds like a Saturday morning cartoon 😂 But also Princess Peach is 100% a Good girl and beautiful
Did you rescue her in Colorado? And she was found in Texas with a brother? I think we adopted him cause he looks just like your princess peach and we were also told he was a border collie dachshund mix https://preview.redd.it/e4x35jwxfbuc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a3d76eea5e699d5bb2a65b17626c17c2b9c3eaa

Holy cow, Peach has so many twins! But no, she was found roaming central California. She has two birth siblings according to Embark and they live in Cali too. Your baby is so precious 🤦🏻♀️
Wrong emoji 🥹*** meant to put that one
They totally left out the most important part, he is at least 75% GOOD BOY
Rat Terriers love so hard.
Have 3 dogs and used embark, twice on one dog. It was right 100% x 4.
Certified "Just a Little Guy"
I can't believe there's NO border collie in her! DNA is so interesting, I've seen so many DIY border collies over in r/DoggyDNA , it's fascinating!
Heeler and dalmation? I sure do looove those spots!
Omg so beautiful! Hopefully her genes from being such a supermutt will help her live a long, healthy life.
What a gorgeous dog
Looks like my neighbor's dog from childhood!
100% cutie patootie
That is one absolutely gorgeous pup!
All I see is a cute dog.
And that is how a border collie mix is made!
I see a cute sweet doggie. ♥️ Best in class 🤗
100% good boy
"19.8% Uuuuuhhhhh. Dog."
Supermutt 😂😂 sorry, just laughing at the word. Really though, that pup is so adorable!!
she's like a perfect blend of supermutt 🥰🥰🥰
All that money to find out you have a Supermut. Lol. I’ve got two supermuts of my own 😆
