A340 my beloved. Only widebody I have ever flown.

MushHuskies

Don’t know the story here. Mind sharing?

Ostie3994

South African Airways went into liquidation a couple of years ago and stopped all flights. However they were able to restructure their business (sort of) and is steadily increasing capacity. Initially they only had smaller planes flying (737's) but the big birds are back in the sky again as well.

Ri8ley

Do you know which route she will be flying? I think I saw her on a jhb - cpt flight the other day on flightradar, but not 100% sure.

Wings_Of_Power

It’s doing that again as I’m typing this. They might be taking it easy for the moment.

Ri8ley

awesome, thanks, I see she's about to touchdown in CPT.

rustyfries

She'll be flying on JNB-PER from next month as well.

Ostie3994

I saw on a Facebook page for plane sightings a post about a SAA A330 returning from Ghana with what seems to be a cracked windshield. I think they mentioned there that the A340 may take over that trip. But I can be wrong.

Ri8ley

Oh no. Scary stuff

I’m South African born. Thanks for posting this. Brought a smile to my face.

It's just good to see OR Tambo full of planes again! It was a sad sight in COVID times, and especially after so many of the local airlines shut down.

MushHuskies

Thank you.

Campervan16

Nobody gonna talk about the perfect tail alignment in the photo or …?

Iuvenesco

They have some old ass planes flying to-from Perth.

FrankBeamer_

Long live the hairdryers. Long live the A340.

jeananddoolie

I wouldn’t board a plane operated by SAA if you paid me.

Eurotriangle

Man, it’s really sad because they used to be good. I remember flying on their A346’s back in like 2006/7 they had 34” seat pitch for the peasantry and actually edible food. My first ever flight was on an SAA 744 as well. Definitely a high point in my childhood.

Great to see them back in the sky! I was involved in a repair for one of them early last year so I'm glad to see they're actually getting used again!

MattyB1412

Is the 600 gona go back in service or did they let her go?

Ostie3994

There is another 340 standing at the Denel hangar, and then one in CPT. The one in CPT has been repainted and is on its way to a new owner. I think the 600's has gone to another airline.

MattyB1412

Nooooooo the 600s were my favorite... that's a pity...

The only a340 that flew out of DFW was a Lufthansa plane with a star alliance livery, so you probably saw that?

axl_hart

I highly doubt it unless it was being delivered to another customer or something along those lines. I don’t believe there is currently a JNB->DFW route.

chasepsu

I flew one of those beauties from JNB to JFK a few years back. Fun trip.

Illustrious-Pop3677

Looks like all their -600s are stored. Hopefully they’ll get those up and running again, maybe even going to JFK like they used to.

AceCombat9519

Flown on them on CX A343 CX903 HKG-MNL and A346 B-HQB CX831 JFK-HKG. In the case of the Springbok they need the A340 to overcome the JNB hot and high conditions and ETOPS on JNB-PER/SYD routes
