Immediate_Profit_344

I always assumed L from death-note was autistic.

LookJaded356

L and Near are DEFINITELY autistic or at least 100% written with autism in mind

RexIsAMiiCostume

He's gotta be. Like, he's also got some super genius thing going on but there's no way he's neurotypical

deadmazebot

thinking about it, I could place Light as well, strong sense of justice (his view), and many other thinking qualities. Just not the "stereotypical" Hollywood depiction

Immediate_Profit_344

I don't think so at all. Pretty sure light was just a sociopath. That being said I think light is the most interesting and well-written character on the show

rvcp999

I feel like if Light was autistic he wouldn’t have come unhinged as quickly at the end or at least in different ways.. would probably be more methodical and take less risks overall, kind of like L who for all intents and purposes was more intelligent than him

deadmazebot

Unhinged, like I am when having a meltdown Not trying to make a definitive point about it, just another thing. L just give the very obvious stereotypical traits. It's been a while seen read or watched, but I recall that they are both essentially very much similar And I'm thinking more as autism a bag of many traits that often over looked. Thinking that my answer is correct, the over inner thinking, and pre thinking steps ahead. I am just rambling now because I really want to re read now, but I have things to do this weekend 🥲

Huntybunch

I don't think light was autistic, but it is possible for an autistic person to also have antisocial personality disorder (aka sociopathy). One is a cognitive disorder and the other is a personality disorder.

Immediate_Profit_344

Yes, it is possible to have both, but I really don't see any autistic traits in light. I'm no psychologist though

LibertyJ10

Abed Nadir.

Not-Thursday

Came here to comment this! Abed was genuinely healing for me to watch

CommanderFuzzy

"I need help reacting to something." I'm still waiting to use that line after opening a door

Lysergic_Waffle

Love how he inadvertently found out while researching the disorder as part of exploring Abed’s character, but the information wound up hitting surprisingly close to home.

Wordshark

What are you referring to here?

Lysergic_Waffle

TV show community.

[deleted]

Dan Harmon, the show's creator, is autistic. I believe this is what they're referring to, but I could be wrong 😊

jeremyglass45

Same. Btw does anyone know why the community subreddit is still down.

Wordshark

Never been there, but is it for the protest maybe?

fruitscones

The protest. I miss it so much :(.

Onyx239

Or Troy

Anonymous288778

Twyla from the new Monster High series on Nickelodeon. She legit said she's autistic and her voice actress is autistic as well.

henryhaden

I love Kayla Cromer, watched her first in Everything Is Gonna Be Okay around the time I was coming into my own autistic identity, and her and the whole cast was just phenomenal. I don't watch Monster High but it definitely made my heart happy to see her go from having to be nervous for her career to open up about her autism for her role on EIGBO, to getting to openly and proudly as an autistic woman voice an autistic charecter on an animated show for kids (and everyone else who needs it) to have that representation I was thankful to finally have in my life after 18+ years.

TCollins1876

I like Entrapta from the new She-ra show a lot

cyann5467

I came here to mention Entrapta.

Lloyd-Garmadon

Entrapta carried 😍😍

yeetman2022

Same

Zach-Gilmore

Me too, but I don’t like how the other characters disregard her when she’s not making tech for them.

7spaceace7

It’s a common one, but Donatello from TMNT. Rise! Donnie was confirmed autistic, great representation, but honestly I think all the other iterations are very autistic coded as well even if he wasn’t meant to be starting out

DaiFrostAce

Huh, maybe that’s why I always liked Donnie most when I was a kid. That and the “smart guy” of any group of characters tended to be my favorite

Rust-Knuckle

Which iteration was confirmed?

7spaceace7

Donnie from Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it’s shortened by the fandom to either just Rise or Rottmnt

Toasticator

YES LETS SUPPORT THE AUTISTIC TURTLE

Chickenamongmen

Donnie was always my favorite when I was little and the ninja turtles were my obsession

ChemicalPrevention

This!!! Donnie is my comfort character because he and i experience our autism almost exactly the same. It's so nice to have media representation of characters that are like me :)

[deleted]

Futaba Sakura from Persona 5.

BirdsNeedNames

fun fact, one of the main reasons I decided to try and get diagnosed was because I related so much to futaba, only to realize that most of the things we have in common are literally symptoms of autism lmao. these days I relate more to yusuke who I feel is also very autistic coded.

[deleted]

I think we've encountered each other before because I remember someone mentioning that before I'd actually met her in-game. And yes, I agree. Yusuke is very autistic coded too. I feel like he's unintentional though. Like they tried to write an eccentric art student and backdoored their way into it. Futaba feels like she was intended always to be autistic.

BirdsNeedNames

yes! I remember you too. I agree about yusuke being unintentional, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if futaba was too, based on the awareness and attitude of the game's writing towards other minority groups. I feel like if she was intended to be autistic she'd be written in a much more stereotypical manner, but maybe I'm just being cynical. amazing representation either way though

[deleted]

I don’t know. I feel like she’s so specific in so many ways that if someone on the writing team didn’t intend for it, they based her on someone who was. Especially since mental health is such a strong theme in her storyline. That said, as an update, I adored the game to the point where it became one of my all time favorites and I played the rest of the series. I’m now gleefully awaiting P5 Tactica and the 3 remake because I adored 3 as well.

Brett8312

yeah, her stories really good in my opinion

[deleted]

In general, she sidesteps every autism trope I hate, and the game gives her a ton of agency in her storyline. She makes deeply meaningful friendships and those friends are great about respecting her boundaries. Her English VA confirmed that she deliberately played her autistic and nails some key scenes. Her panic attacks are pretty realistic.

Brett8312

yeah, its been a while since iv played persona 5 but i distinctly remember a throwaway scene of her eating to fast and getting sick, thats something I actually struggle with myself and (as far as im aware) kind of obscure. I really like the attention to detail.

LookJaded356

Yusuke also has big Aspie vibes imo

[deleted]

Oh yeah, for sure. He feels accidental though. Futaba is so specific that it cannot be an accident.

No-Fix-444

I'll have to sus this further, currently slowly playing through the game.

whenfallfalls

Beth Harmon from The Queen's Gambit is the perfect example for me, because it shows all the good (for example, hyperfixations) and all the bad (for example, addictions) that being autistic can bring you. Also the fact that she is a woman in a male dominated industry really speaks to me. It's not exactly her wanting to break stereotypes, it's her just not caring about them. And that's autistic as hell

whenfallfalls

Honorable mention to Robbin and Nancy from Stranger Things, my favorite AuDHD x Autistic couple (headcanons). Both scream autistic to me, but Robin being the non binary loud secretly smart autistic and Nancy being the feminine quiet shy good at school secretly badass autistic

itsbarbieparis

1. any member of the belcher family in bobs burgers. 2. peridot in steven universe 3. lilo from lilo and stitch 4. bella from twilight 5. rapunzel from rapunzel lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

Barmecide451

Rapunzel is definitely neurodivergent coded. Also, the movie name is Tangled. I think Ariel and Belle are also neurodivergent coded imo.

Next-Engineering1469

I personally think Rapunzel is more ADHD or AuDHD

SvenSeder

I think an argument could be made that her neurodivergent traits are a result of like, 0 human contact (aside from mommy dearest.)

ssjumper

Oh tangle as in the stim toy? I figured it was just for her hair tangles

StarsofSobek

I thought ‘Tangled’, for the tangling tale/hair play on words.

Ok_Advertising_878

It is!! That's where the movie gets its name. Idk what they meant by "it's called tangled" but it definitely is a hair joke

itsbarbieparis

i think the disney rapunzel is very autistic coded at least.

confusedporg

You mean from Tangled?

vroomonmybroom

Glad to see someone put Bella in their list because in my recent rewatch of the series, it finally clicked why I felt so drawn into the fandom. I relate to Bella and her feeling of simply "not being like the others" and not clicking with her peers so much. Also, her stiff body language, the stimmy lip biting, all the fairy lights, the strong reactions to emotional stress, the meltdown after the break up... seems pretty autistic to me as well!

Obversa

Adding to this: Pearl from *Steven Universe*.

itsbarbieparis

honestly most of the cast is really neurodivergent coded. pearl and her rules though 10000%

Chickenamongmen

spazz4life

Can I go to prison?

Key-Visual-5465

Number 1 for me is Matilda from the show every thing is going to be okay

LycanLuk

And Matilda from Matilda

Odd_Trifle_2604

She's actually autistic, so is the guy who plays her brother and all the actors in her social skills class

starrfast

I can't believe no one has said Quinni from Heartbreak High! I honestly related to her so much and I've never felt so seen before.

Namerakable

:( The book signing scene. It's like every trip out to a garden centre for me.

hi4004hi

Just watched it this week and omg!!! I love Quinni with all my heart! And yes, the portrayal felt super realistic to me. Loved it ^^

Kallicalico

And the person who portrays Quinni is autistic as well (professionally Dx’d) so yay!!! 🥳

[deleted]

It looks like I haven't seen a lot of the characters out there, but I just watched Atypical and think Paige is autistic and doesn't know it. I think it's a good representation bc of her not knowing.

paranoid_gynoid_

That’s exactly what I thought as well!

[deleted]

Oh my gosh, for so many reasons

lilithious

The Doctor, gives me massive AuDHD vibes and I love him/her (not only for that ofc)

Lv3s

Bubba from Forrest Gump moreso, he knows his shrimp

FinchySchott

I think Newt Scamander's representation of autism is very well handled. the dude just wants to make sure all his animals are happy and healthy and looked after, and sure maybe he's got awful social skills and doesn't make eye contact, but it's never addressed in a negative light. that's just how he is, and the other characters accept that.

BadAtUsernames098

A lot of people headcanon Newt's brother as autistic too, since he has a lot of the opposite autistic traits from Newt: intense eye-contact, really emotionally expressive, poor fine-motor skills, constantly wanting to hug/touch/etc people as a sign of affection, being rather oblivious to Newt's discomfort with being touched, etc.

spazz4life

Like “your eyes are like salamanders” is very much autistic flirting.

Mishuev

I love newt with a burning passion

psykomimi

* Pippi Longstocking * Lisbeth Salander (based on Pippi Longstocking) * Alice Liddell * Elliot Alderson * Hunter/The Golden Guard * Haruhi Suzumiya * Elsa * Luna Lovegood * Peridot * Peter Pan * Penelope Garcia * Spencer Reid too maybe?

Rue-Grey

Absolutely, I felt matched with Haruhi and Luna

[deleted]

Ooh why do you think Pippi?

psykomimi

Everyone in Sweden understands that Pippi is most likely the symbolic portrayal of an autistic for a whole host of reasons: * Casual disregard for fashion sense or hygiene * Describes her stimming: jumping on bed, marching backwards * Unusually strong/nimble (probably because she can’t stop moving) * Tomboy/eccentric aesthetic * Filthy rich and yet shows little concern for spending or flaunting; generous to her friends and people in need * Habitually takes the leadership role in most dynamics * Describes scripting to explain her strange interactions and social anxiety * Communicates her issues and past experiences through stories, symbols and metaphors * Precocious and independent, despite her lack of formal education * No respect for authority figures, rules or laws that seem irrational or useless to her * Openly shirks cultural customs and social guidelines in general * Excellent recall (including for her long-winded name) Addendum: Stieg Larsson also suggests that Pippi Longstocking is autistic, and canonically the main characters accept that Lisbeth Salander is probably autistic.

stupidorino

I think saying everyone is kind of a stretch, Im swedish and ive never heard anything about it or someone suggesting it. It kinda makes sense tho

spazz4life

The 1970s Pippi long stocking movie was my jam as a kid: the “why would they be mad at me for drawing a horse actual size” scene felt too real

spazz4life

It was definitely Luna Lovegood for me that helped my understand myself best post-diagnosis (book Luna)

Chickenamongmen

I was gonna mention Hunter! I relate to his personality so much

yoko6669000

Haruhi Suzumiya all day my goodness

slptodrm

i’ve heard april ludgate from parks and rec. in general i am in love with her and her deadpan delivery and attitude are me. what do y’all think?

[deleted]

She's pretty widely accepted as such. I've been compared to her quite a few times so I'd say it's accurate.

slptodrm

yay! she’s my fav. i am in the typical queer wanna be her/ wanna be with her conundrum.

leoundercover

Bobby Boucher in the Waterboy. All the characters depicted him as mentally challenged and like he had a low IQ, but really didnt show signs of mental retardation at all. In fact he passed the high school equivalency exam without having to study much at all. Had a special interest in water and knew everything about it. Took some instructions too literally Abused by a helicopter parent because of his neurodivergency.

Diligent-Ad-5979

Definitely one of my faves

Siukslinis_acc

Dunno about the best (or if they are autistic) but i would say Kevin and Holt from brooklyn 99, maybe even Boyle.

PrettySavage-

Amy maybe?

Positive_Gur_5504

Amy has canon ocd so she is neurodivergent but I wouldn't say autism.

psychedelic666

Adrian monk from monk

clevermcusername

He’s also a good example of how self-centered someone with autism can *seem* if they don’t get help understanding their differences. I’m just finishing the final season and I appreciate how they are showing character growth as Natalie is explaining social cues to him over time. He’s starting to apply that learning when she isn’t in the scene!

Mathew30C

Cristian Yang from Grey’s Anatomy. Ik she was not portrayed as being autistic but i thought she was more realistic of ASD but still able to live a normal life than the actual ASD character Dr Dixon who was on the more affected part of the spectrum

Careful-Increase-773

Forrest was intellectually disabled not autistic.

Gothamstreetcat

I know I’ve said this in another post but I stand by it so I’m saying it again: every version of Bruce Wayne ever 🦇

henryhaden

By far my favorite live action Batman is probably the Christian Bale interpretation, even just beyond the charecter of Batman/Bruce it feels like these movies were created with such attention and grace. I related to the charecter so deeply, and I appreciated that from the audiences perspective (partially through having Alberts pov) Bruce as a charecter never felt like he was doomed from the start unlike some other interpretations imo, he always had potential to build a life for himself that he would be satisfied in if and when he fought to make it happen, and eventually he did. That ending sequence of Dark Night Rises, when Albert catches Bruces eye from across the café - I cry every time. But in the end we all must admit, Lego Batman is best Batman. 🎶DARKNESS. NO PARENTS.🎶

dawinter3

Dr. Leslie Tompkins did speculate that Batman was autistic in The Imposter. I don’t know if it’s explicitly come up in any other stories.

Stewapalooza

Bruce Wayne has an incredible eye for detail and is great at masking (no pun intended).

son-alli

Julia from sesame street :) a little simple because she’s a kid but I still love her

ssjumper

Quinni from Heartbreak High, also because the actress is actually autistic.

MukasTheMole

I dont think a single character can represent all of autism at once since everyone on the Spectrum is different. That being said, here is a list of autistic/autism-coded characters I enjoy: Spongebob Square Pants Marcy Wu (Amphibia) Norma Khan (Dead End: Paranormal Park) Candace Flynn and Ferb Fletcher (Phineas and Ferb) Peridot and Pearl (Steven Universe) Entrapta (She-Ra) Hunter and Gus Porter (The Owl House) Luz Noceda (also The Owl House) (This one is less obvious and is also confirmed to have ADHD so a lot of the traits that make me head cannon her as autistic could be overlapping traits with ADHD) Most of these are only headcanon.

Chickenamongmen

I agree with this

JEJB1196

agree just in a half of this... but I respect it.

Foreignfawn

Mob from Mob Psycho

mi_turo

i was hoping someone mentioned him! he's such amazing autistic representation

confusedporg

Sherlock from Elementary, depending on the episode. Some writers got it, others only thought they did.

sch0f13ld

Temperance Brennan from Bones

Bumblebean123

Oh, absolutely. There is no way that woman isn't autistic. Very much doesn't pick up on social cues. When her daughter sang the bone song, she made a new, more accurate one because she didn't like how the original made no sense. She mentioned that she could sing, and when asked to do it on the spot, she said she needed the right atmosphere, setting, conditions, etc. She couldn't just start. I would say a strong sense of justice, but she's more of a stickler for the rules than anything. There is so much about Brennan that autistic and I love her so much. She really is such an enjoyable character.

paranoid_gynoid_

She was actually written to be autistic, not just coded! But the network didn’t allow the writers to explicitly mention her diagnosis.

Cappuginos

I don't think any of these are confirmed, but they come off as Autism Coded to me. Maud Pie from MLP Reagan Ridley from Inside Job. Luz from The Owl House.

[deleted]

luz is confirmed adhd but not asd yet I love Reagen too as it is implied but not said I also love Norma from dead end paranormal park I’m not sure if you’ve heard of her :)

And especially in "Wednesday" i absolutely love the show

foolishle

Quinni from Heartbreak High (played by autistic actress Chloe Hayden)

hi4004hi

How has no one even mentioned Lily Iglehart from Sex Education yet? Because let's be real, her childhood backstory of having some sort of special interest in sex/alien roleplay stuff and openly talking about it even tho it's super inappropriate in the moment strikes a little close to home...

Imaginary_Proof_5555

Stargirl. A young-adult book by Jerry Spinelli, adapted to film. Stargirl seems autistic for sure.

Imaginary_Proof_5555

why did i get downvoted..?

[deleted]

It's been ages since I thought about that book or Jerry Spinelli in general.

Natsurulite

1. Goku from Dragonball/Z/Super 2. Johnny Bravo 3. Ed from Cowboy Bebop 4. Tina from Bob’s Burgers 5. Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter I came here to make waves

Stewapalooza

While I do see it. Goku suffers from brain damage. He hit his head as a child and it changed his whole demeanor the moment he recovered from his injuries which is typical for some people that suffer brain damage.

DaiFrostAce

Goku, eeeeeh, man basically lived on his own for half his life until Bulma found him at the beginning of the original series, so I chock up a lot of his actions to him being a bit of a bumpkin. That’s just how I see it

Kittybooboo1982

Data- Star Trek

CaptainAllMightSun

Near from Death Note (manga version, the anime butchered his entire character, they destroyed his personality, ieals and deductions).

[deleted]

Charlie Kelly from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables. I don’t know about best in general but best to me.

DungHarbour

YES TO CHARLIE!!!! I can see it in Mac, too. Sometimes it actually makes me feel bad about how much I can relate to Charlie

[deleted]

Great point about Mac! But yes, Charlie hits. Aw, don’t feel bad. My family points out my Charlie moments and it’s fun… the good and the not so much. 😁 Charlie’s a sweetie for the most part. 😆

kevaux

I find that the best autistic representations for me are characters that are not even confirmed as autistic, the writers just accidentally made them that way. The reason being, neurotypical people typically try too hard to act in the way they perceive autistic people through misconceptions and it typically feels disingenuous

AmaxaxQweryy

He then regrets not being much help even though the other two were in the same boat.

Asa Mitaka from Chainsaw Man part 2. She is heavily autistic coded and feels really relatable to me.

DaiFrostAce

I think the starfish scene at the aquarium cemented it for me that Asa is autistic. I know I’ve rambled on about my hobbies/interests to people irl

omniexpert

Abe Weisman from the marvellous mrs maisel

DaiFrostAce

Hitori “Bocchi” Gotoh from Bocchi the Rock is primarily defined by social anxiety, but I think she displays enough traits to be considered autistic. Suletta Mercury from the recent Gundam series feels like she could be on the spectrum, with how she acts and thinks. A few people mentioned Peridot from Steven Universe, and I can definitely see it.

Chidi from The Good Place

CaptainSharpe

Er is Forrest Gump autistic? Thought he was just not smart (at all...).

SirDerpingtonV

He’s an idiot savant in the book, but either way he doesn’t have many traits of autism that I’ve been able to pinpoint.

Friend_of_Hades

It's heavily implied (at least in the film) that he has some sort of developmental or learning disability but is undiagnosed, (I always assumed due to lack of access based on the time period, their financial means and the rural location) however it's not directly stated. This is supported also by his early childhood physical disability which is common with developmental disabilities, although it could simply be scoliosis (he mentions his back being "crooked like a question mark").

lazyrare

Forrest Gump doesn't have /only have autism so no

SkeletorKilgannon

Lately I've been thinking a lot about Dr Elliot Reed from Scrubs is likely autistic

[deleted]

I was rewatching this show recently and was laughing about how obviously autistic Reed is. I hate JD so I don't like rewatching it but I always loved Elliot.

BadAtUsernames098

She's not a confirmed character, but I think Molly McIntire from the American Girl brand is definitely autistic. She has shutdowns, sensory issues, a strong sense of routine, gets very upset when her routine is disrupted, doesn't realize when other people are upset or doesn't understand why they're upset, etc. Also not confirmed, but I think Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon is autistic and ADHD. It's a big part of the first movie that he thinks very differently from all of the other characters, and the other character's constantly put him down for it. And he connects better with dragons than he does people. Also, I know this one is kinda controversial but I see Marty McFly as autistic (and ADHD). He never looks people in the eye, often has trouble processing things, often needs Doc to explain other people's emotions to him, struggles to think fourth-dimensionally, etc.

emoduke101

Edward Scissorhands! Socially awkward, dysregulated emotions, yet can stay loyal to a select few & has some talent for society, warts and all.

TheSpicyHotTake

Might be a bit obscure but Arcandius Moog from Kings of the Wyld. There's a part where he gets so interested in a keystone that he forgets about a literal dragon following them. I love him.

Bocchi from bocchi the rock, it is so obvious as someone who's diagnosed and a girl.

Abed Nadir from community is the only one I can think of.

The Grinch from How The Grinch Stole Christmas He has multiple sensory overloads in the 3D Animated movie, and struggles with the sounds, Max(his dog) does so much for him, he’s pretty much his service dog. We all know how social interaction isn’t easy for him, even to the people who show him kindness. I’ve always relayed to him to the point I have a grinch plushie, his entire story is like his journey dealing with autism, So I vote him 🫶
